    I am currently listening to the audiobook autobiography of Cassandra Peterson, AKA Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.

      Is it any good? I have it on my wish list to read.

    I want to hear more about the piano (my mother was a piano teacher and Church Organist). How many years did you take piano lessons? Did you enjoy playing the piano? Do you still play today? Do you still have a piano in your house. Do neighbors complain about noise when you have a piano in your apartment? Do you tune your own piano (my mother was had a blind piano tuner that came to our house)? How hard is it to get a piano up the steps in a Soviet Era building? So many questions need answered! I like your name and how you pronounce it. Elvira is pronounced differently here in the States and it was made kind of famous through a country music song and a woman who hosted a television show presenting late night campy movies… as you surely know. I enjoyed your story.

      LOL I'm listening to Cassandra Peterson's audiobook right now. Her story is also pretty interesting and she also had a dad who did things unconventionally. Incidentally, I also happen to be the offspring of a piano teacher/church organist.

      Thank you for watching and your in-depth questions! Lots of girls in Soviet Russia were taught how to play the piano. For some reason that instrument was considered prestigious in USSR.
      I will try to record another video detailing my piano adventures. The short version is: I took 6 years of piano, and I didn't enjoy it very much because I wanted to play cool, modern Western songs, like anything by ABBA, but instead was forced to play lots of Bach and other dead German composers, which to a child is not a lot of fun. :)
      I did get a piano eventually, which is an interesting story of it's own.

    Interesting story. I initially thought you were of Tatar origin. Elvira is a pretty common name among Tatar girls. Take the head of the Russian central bank Elvira Nabiullina for example .😅

    • @elvirabary
      @elvirabary  2 дня назад +5

      Yes, you're right. Elvira is a popular Tatar name, but because the connectivity between different regions of the country is very poor, I wasn't aware of that fact until the Internet came along.

    Indeed, it is unusual for a Russian girl not to be called 0ne of the "standard" names (Elena, Maria, Marina, Natalia, Olga, Svetlana.) Something I wonder is why there is so little variety when there are so many beautiful alternatives like Elvira. The same is true for boys, starting with Alexander, who always ends up being called Sasha. Russian names are a bit of a mystery for non-Russians.

    • @elvirabary
      @elvirabary  2 дня назад +1

      Before the revolution, names were usually picked from the Church calendar - such as if someone was born on a specific saint name. After the revolutions, the names were often chosen based on popular movies, books, etc. The lack of original and unusual names in Soviet culture translated into many girls named Elena, Olga, Natasha and so forth.

      @@elvirabary That is very interesting. I know personally multiple examples of people with the standard names. An exception to the rule is a Tatiana, of which I only ever met one. I never met an Elvira, and not even an Ekaterina. The same goes for the boys, who are all Sashas Sergeys, and Vladimirs.

    Only some women have a song about their name.
    You got one. By the Oak Ridge Boys.

      In Danish my name rhymes with 100s of infinitives, too many things and PIGS 😩 Which several "poets" obviously know 🙄
      My surname is the Danish name for a world famous rabbit called Thumper. So I got the skin of a rhino 🤣
      Happy New Year 😊

    I suspected that it had nothing to do with the song, 'Elvira', by the Oak Ridge Boys! What about your last name? Here in Ireland the name Barry is quite common but I assume that your 'Bary' has no connection?

    • @elvirabary
      @elvirabary  2 дня назад +1

      Bary is a shortened version of my very Russian sounding madden last name. :)

    The unanswered question in this video is about whether you play the piano. If so, maybe you could demonstrate with a short piece. I'm sure your grandmother would be proud.

    It's not that uncommon of a name. I have a grand neice named Elvira. Although it is pronounced el-VY-ra. We call her Ellie. She is a typical cute American girl. However, she is not as aristocratic nor as artistic as you. Happy New Year.

      My ex and I looked after a very sweet cat called Elvis for a few months. We really wanted to keep him but his real owner eventually came back from travelling. So naturally, when she got her own black cat some years later, she had to be called "Elvira".

      That's awesome! I remember the first time I met a girl with the same name as me, and it felt so strange! Weirdly enough it was another Russian girl, but we met here in US.
      Happy New Year!
