Another great video. On the topic of responsibility, I have never shown symptoms of HSV but I am considering getting tested anyway. In the US, hsv is not included in the"full" testing panel. Do you think it would be more responsible for the CDC to recommend testing for HSV in full panel sti screenings?

Hey Mike! Thanks for your kind words on this video :) Your question is a bit tough to answer. On the one hand it'd lead to more positive diagnosis which would perhaps help reduce the stigma since many more people would be aware of their diagnosis. On the other hand, it'd represent a huge cost for the medical industry for no return because those that would test positive are likely not to have symptoms and therefore won't need antivirals (also tests conducted on a asymptomatic person do not necessarily provide reliable results.)
I guess what would help is if medical providers would consistently tell people that HSV is not included in an average STI test panel because if it was, virtually everyone would test positive.

I know I have HSV, and I don’t recall ever having an outbreak, not even in the first infection. My diagnosis was on September 2023. And my previous very deep analysis was November 2021 and I hadn’t HSV back then.
I have been taking PrEP (almost) daily since July 2022, to add another layer of protection to my sexual health.
According to 8:55, regarding taking antivirals daily, is there any chance that PrEP is the reason why I have never experienced an outbreak? And cans this also reduce the chances for me transmitting HSV?

How are you so involved in your neighbour’s sex life? I do believe that grown adults can make informed and consensual decisions, given that communication is honest and transparent and upfront. Additionally, this video is about herpes, which has a lot less health implications as the example you gave of HIV even though they are not curable.
You can are herpes positive and don’t have an outbreak for months/ years and are living your life with otherwise so symptoms. That’s why so little people know they have it and people who do know they have it are actually able to handle it much more responsibility than people who never got tested. When did you last get tested?
As a peak of the baby boom guy, I'm concerned about the fact that folks in 1973 were only hearing about (and being taught about) syphilis and gonorrhea. No one was talking about oral herpes until the late 1970s, and then HIV in about 1980, and I was only hearing about genital herpes by later than that, and HPV even later than that. Is there any obvious likely way that one can go "Back to School" in the same mainstream way where you'd have to get a grade in it to make sure you can say: "Are you as smart as a 10th Grader?"

I recently had a responsible potential partner reveal that she had genital HSV1.
I have to say that I don't find this video helpful... and in general, I find the information available in the internet pointing in all sorts of directions from "everybody has it, just ignore" to "use barrier methods always".
She's really sweet and I need time to figure out out to deal with it, but I might already have hurt her by hesitating.
The thing is... I really like oral sex, and I can't see living without or using barrier methods for it.
I also already have my own skin problems (non-contagious rashes) which I struggle to manage. Adding cold sores would make an already frustrating situation worse.
... and I really would hate to reject her for something a majority of the population practically have... Heck... I might even have asymptomatic without knowing.

While I appreciate this video when it comes to making myself feel better, this is extremely self serving. Unless you are a complete sociopath, YES it should be your MORAL responsibility as the person with a contagious disease to protect others. I recently contracted HSV 2 from an ex and while I required condoms and antivirals and he complied, HE WAS UNAWARE ABOUT SHEDDING. You should do everything in your power not to be a risk to others. You sound like you’re trying to justify selfishly doing what you want as long as the other person knows. If you actually give a damn about your partner, you absolutely should do what makes them feel safe. If you don’t want to consider others, just never date. This just pissed me off 😂

I mean unless I’m having an outbreak I don’t have herpes. I only test positive for antibodies. I don’t get outbreaks ever and have never passed them to anyone. I don’t use condoms generally and no one has ever gotten them and my current gf doesn’t have them and we don’t use condoms

I have a couple of questions and I suppose they are all about the same topics: having hsv-1, being in a relationship and trying to prevent hsv-2.
- I have had hsv-1 since childhood. I am not sexually active yet, but how can I prevent getting hsv-2 as much as possible? I am terrified of getting hsv-2.
- Should I always use protection during all types of sex? What if my partner does not want to use condoms anymore (after getting tested)?
- How can I avoid getting hsv-2 in a committed relationship without condoms if I have hsv-1 and my partner does not know if he has herpes. He does not show any symptoms.
- 2/3 of the world population has hsv-1, but not all of those people have hsv-2 even though most people in committed relationships do not use condoms. How is that possible?
- they say that as long as a monogamous couple gets tested negative, it is safe to ditch the condom but I suppose this isn’t true when it comes to herpes?

This is awful and extremely selfish information. Coming from someone who has just met someone who has Hsv2, I’ve done my research however I am counting on this person to guide and educate me as we go along. A part of being in a relationship is looking out for each other. I don’t have it so I may more easily get carried away during sex. It will take time for me to keep my safety in mind so I believe that it’s a two way street. You are absolutely responsible for keeping the people around you safe.
