They are often trained to be due to their intelligence and build for it (you were correct in saying they aren't small) but they make excellent family pets due to their loyalty and protectiveness. 2 years late but part of the dog's training is learning to prioritize the arm holding something if the person is armed. If not then the right arm is usually preferred but it is up to the dog which do have their own preferences.

My best friend trained her German Shepherd to be a therapy dog. He is the sweetest most loveable dog ever. Very intelligent. But and he's definitely not small, even compared to a human. But he knows his commands and would only attack if his owner was threatened or if taught to attack on command.

I love how the pup was whining to attack the guy as it's fun for him. I like when work dogs enjoy their job. I hate that they're put into a lot of danger, but I know how well taken care of they are.
This training was interesting to analyze.
One issue I see: If the criminal is left-handed and armed, it's not gonna end well for the dog.

Yikes! I hope that's not the case
2 years late but part of the dog's training is learning to prioritize the arm holding something if the person is armed. If not then the right arm is usually preferred but it is up to the dog which do have their own preferences.
Dogs only work on people who are afraid, a dog is no match for a grown male human
