I also would have liked to see the box joint being cut, at least on one of the ends. That is the kind of thing most of us tune in to see. Please don't skip over so much of how you do things off camera. Off camera does me no good to see how it's done. I do enjoy your videos for the most part though. Thank you for doing them.

Thanks for the great question, and I know many people read these comments. To make the angle cuts was pretty easy. Once the box was glued and solid, I stood it on end and aligned the angle of the table saw blade to match the the angle, re-set the blade height to just trim the ends, and went ahead and ran it through the table saw, for the other end I had to flip the fence to the opposite side of the blade then run that side. Very quick and accurate ... and thanks again for posting this question.

Yup ... and that's the beauty of woodworking, often many different ways to accomplish the same thing. The reason I opted to do it after the gluing, is I didn't want to take the time to set up the start and stop points on the fence since I still would have had to square off the corners anyway.
Thanks for commenting, nice to hear other peoples approaches :)

Hi Mark .. thanks for telling me more what you want to see. This will help a lot in future vids. I always seem to be running a fine line between showing too much and wasting viewers times and not giving enough info ... so this helps me a lot when viewers offer good suggestions like this.

How long should this take the average person, at an intermediate level, to make?

I would have liked to see more details. You skip over alot of stuff but I think THATS what people are tuning in to see as most of us are probably learning. Like when you glue up. Show us one of the corners being glued up. You can skip the other three corners as they are the same. Also would have liked a closeup of the corners to see how you fit in the box joints .with the tapered box height. Great tip on the table saw angle jig, Could have also used tracksaw.

Okay, so how did you bevel the front and back pieces? Obviously they have to be the same angle as the sides.

I actually made 2 sets of these, the first set I used a hand plane for the front and back, the second set I marked it when I dry fit all the sides togehter and cut the front and back on the table saw. Honestly I forget which set I did the video on, but the hand planning I recalled was easiest.

great little box but one comment (constructive) would be to explain how you bevelled the front and back so that the lid sits squarely on all sides. this is not obvious for new woodworkers who want to try this. cheers great work

Wouldn't it have been easier to cut the rabbit on the saw table or router table before assembly?

Soften up your lighting and add more lights to get rid of your harsh shadows. Great video though!

Hi, Why the finger joints, wouldn't a rabet joint be easier? also why a guide bearing, wouldn't the fence give you more control over how deep the rabbet is?
Also was that a climb cut you did on the base of the cabinet?
Love to watch your vids, they always teach me a lot.
    regards bill.

    • @knecht105
      @knecht105  10 лет назад

Yes a rabbet joint would be easier but nearly as strong and for a box that is going to be carried around a lot from show to show I decided box joints would be best. You could use a fence, I just like to use the bearing as it is quicker and at least as accurate, then all I have to worry about is the depth of the cut which is controlled by the height of the router bit.
Sorry ... not following you on the climb cut ...
