"You're a disease. They're the cure." That line, is just so powerful. Venom was essentially, an addiction for Peter. His friends, even his bully knew something was up, and tried to help in their own way. But Peter ignored all of it. Up to a point. Up until he realizes what a jackass he's been under Venom's influence. The lesson Spectacular Spider-Man teaches with Venom is simple but powerful: You can't help people who don't want to be helped. And that's why this show is so incredible. It tackled real life issues in a way that was easy for a younger audience to understand, while still treating the older crowds with respect.

Flash Thompson's talk with Peter is, in my very informed opinion, the greatest moment in his character's history. Forget going to Vietnam. Giving Peter Parker a reality check at his lowest moment is a thing of beauty. He saved his hero that day. What could be more wonderful than that?
God, I know it's selfish as a Spider-Fan, but I truly wish that Disney had never bought Marvel, or at least waited another five years. Spectacular could have become the definitive version of Peter Parker if it wasn't for corporate bullshit.

Personally, I've always preferred the metaphor of a toxic relationship portrayed in the original 1980s "Black Suit Saga" - the reason the symbiote bonds to Peter in the original telling is that it loves the way it feels to ride around on his body, and I think there are a couple of explicit times in early comics appearances that Venom actually mentioned that his motivation for the hatred he shows towards Peter is that it _loved him,_ and felt betrayed when that love wasn't returned. It gave him all that extra power - organic webbing, increased strength and agility, changing its shape to form clothes for him so he didn't have to change out of his costume - because it wanted to stay with him as much as possible... it gave Peter so many reasons to never take it off, because it loved him and didn't want to leave him at all, ever. The increased aggression didn't come from the symbiote at first - the reason Peter initially became so short-tempered and aggressive was due to being constantly exhausted, because the symbiote would hijack his body while he slept to go out webslinging at night. It wanted to keep the thrill of using Peter's superhuman body because it enjoyed it, and didn't care about the impact on Peter's life.
The symbiote represented a possessive, self-entitled, narcissistic kind of love, showering Peter with gifts of increased power as long as it was allowed to stay and do what it wanted - Peter, in turn, was the codependent who spent a long time in denial about the damage the relationship was doing to him, only allowing himself to see the benefits of the suit despite everyone he cared about warning him about the effect it was having on him. And when he finally came to accept that the relationship was toxic, he broke away - only for the narcissistic symbiote to find someone else (Eddie Brock) whom it could use to get back at Peter, and take its spiteful revenge against the lover it felt had betrayed it. Venom's first act in the comics (after becoming a separate character rather than being known as just "the symbiote") was to get all "Single White Female" with Mary Jane, kidnapping her and threatening her life because Peter loved her more than he did the suit. Venom carried a burning hatred for Spidey for years - decades, even - because it was denied the continued use of Peter's body, the object of its selfish desire that it felt it had a _right_ to possess, without considering how _Peter_ felt about the situation.
While the substance-abuse subtext used in later adaptations is just as valid, it feels like there are plenty of other "power corrupts" addiction metaphors out there - but toxic relationships with a narcissist aren't really talked about as much in comics (and _especially_ weren't in the pre-GrimDark days of the 1980s). The only one which springs to mind is the Harley Quinn and Joker thing, but that has been twisted-up and misconstrued as romantic over the years to the point that it now almost glorifies those types of relationship more than it condemns them. Admittedly it's partly because I'm an old fogey who's ancient enough to have actually _read_ these comics when they were first released in the UK, so there's probably an element of nostalgia in my opinion, but I stand by the original telling from the origin on Battleworld in "Secret Wars" to the weird night-time possessions to the dark stalker-like obssession Venom had with Peter for years to come.
Gloop from a space-shuttle, my ass - to me, Venom's first appearance was as a black ball from an alien vending machine!

    • @fernandopacheco579
      @fernandopacheco579 2 года назад +85

Both metaphors are incredible, but the only flaw i think the "Substance abuse" route has is that Venom becomes just a Spider-Man Villain, instead of being an entire character on their own as an Anti-Hero who HAPPENS to have a grudge with Spider-Man. it wouldn't allow for the Symbiote to change with Eddie as it did in the comics, and it DEFINETLY wouldn't be a good metaphor to go by if they make him like his comic counterpart, because it'd be really weird if they show that the symbiote is an allegory for addiction to Peter and then show Eddie trying to do good using the same substance which, at first, was displayed as a drug. I definetly agree that the original "Toxic relationship" route is the best one because it allows the symbiote to be held accountable for this, as it is a living, sentient being with emotions and it kinda fucked Peter (and Eddie for a while) up, like it's a metaphor for people that used to be toxic, are aware that they fucked up and are trying to change. So it's up to Eddie AND the Symbiote to try and outgrow that hatred and toxic mindset as they try to work together and over time, become more and more like the Lethal Protector they claim they are.

In this show, Spider-man beats Venom by tricking him into saying he's willing to bond with symbiote again, and symbiote ditches Eddie but Peter's strong will (here represents as literal wall of his friends) prevents symbiote from bonding again. This is actually how Spider-man beat Venom first time around in comics.
I really miss when writers forget how exactly smart Peter actually is, he's like top five smartest characters in Marvel comics, yet writers frequently forget about that.

The thing about this is that the Symbiote only works when it affects both Peter and Spiderman’s lives. Peter has no life right now, so Venom would almost entirely be a plus aside from the more aggressive nature he’ll get. Peter would have no conflict because it only affects Spiderman.
Peter would need to either reintroduce himself to Ned and MJ naturally, or meet new characters and spend time with them over the course of the trilogy for the Symbiote arc to feel deserved. I hope that either he slowly reintroduces himself to Ned and MJ over the course of the trilogy to naturally become friends with them as just Peter, or that he meets Gwen and Harry and the story takes it from there. Hell even a new cast of characters would be cool. But without relationships, the Symbiote isn’t impactful and would be a waste of one of Spiderman’s greatest storylines

It always felt like to me that it was symbolic of the symbiote coming in and "beating" his red and blue suit, "beating" a reflection of his old self, becoming his main costume and (briefly) destroying who he used to be. The line that he says to Chameleon at the end of the episode where he's "the one and only, got it?" just adds on to all this, like the symbiote was telling the red and blue suit that IT will be the only costume that Peter will use from that point on.

I’ve loved Spider-Man all my life and have consumed so much Spider-Man media that I thought I understood all the subtext of the major iconic arcs. But the symbiote story being an allegory for substance abuse never registered with me fully until this video. Spider-Man really is the perfect fictional every man. Fantastic stuff Alex. Hope you’re doing okay.

    • @--CHARLIE--
      @--CHARLIE-- Год назад +3

While its an allegory for substance abuse in this show, in the original comics it was more like a toxic relationship. Really though both metaphors work really well for the concept of the symbiote, at least as it was depicted in the 80s before its mythology was continually expanded on exponentially, until it became its own thing entirely in the wider marvel universe. Not that I mind that because its still really cool now, but my point is that the metaphors work best pre-"lethal protector" era venom and in adaptations taking cues from that early part of the symbiotes history.

I like all the objects and characters being used as metaphors to reflect or foil Peter. Venom being the most obvious example, but my favorite example is the gene cleanser that reverted the lizard back to Dr Connors. It was also used as a metaphor for suicide, as peter using it to give up, dodge responsibilities, and avoid pain. Then later on Venom uses it as a weapon, almost like a gun, to "end" Spider-Man.
Also the Globulin Green is clearly a metaphor for drugs.
This show is so amazi- Spectacular

Arguably the greatest animated superhero show of all time. An absolute tragedy it only ran for 26 episodes. I know most people would probably have btas as the number one animated show ever and although I’m a huge dc fan and not much of a marvel fan, this show was probably my favorite. I still can’t believe it was cut short, and I’m still hoping it’ll be revived at some point and continue like the clone wars show was able to (obviously I would want there to be many more seasons made not just one). Although the Spider-Man animated series of the 90’s was good this was better and was nearly flawless. A true shame it didn’t have the same run time as shows like BTAS and STAS.

one thing about the venom symbiote i find interesting, is that while it was originally an 80's drug psa, it could also be interpreted as a metaphor for a toxic relationship.
hell, you could even interpret it that way in the spectacular cartoon, eddie straight up refers to venom as "the one i love" in one episode. and in the comics, peter strips off his costume and screams "you want me? then take me! im yours!" in his underwear, you can't get more homoerotic than that!
the tom hardy movies are the good ending, happy pride month everyone.

It's the single best version of the symbiote suit storyline in any Spider-Man adaptation outside the comics imo. Because it's the one that emphasizes the deeper allegories and themes that come with that arc about battling with inner demons and substance abuse to get away as quick, cheap way to get away from the pain of life the best.
I'm hoping the other best Spider-Man adaptation, Insomniac's Spider-Man, can give us as much of an emotionally poignant interpretation of the symbiote and Venom in Spider-Man 2.

Wow man I didn’t think this video would hit me so Damn hard. I’ve been in a dark world too much after losing so much again and again it’s like I’m never allowed to be happy it’s always a struggle. I don’t know why that hit me so damn deeply in my feelings like I felt it was so personal, this video honestly made me step back and look at myself. It feels corny but spider man is so inspirational, I know he’s a comic book character but I find inspiration in his never ending will to face his challenges and darkness. that’s something I can’t do so well. “You can’t bring those you lost back” “it’s easy to fuck , to snort, to smoke to drink your problems away” those words hit me so hard at work. this whole video is kind of what I needed at this point, especially the part when Peter faces his worst fears and fight his demons head on even though it’s hard and traumatic he gets up after every hit and doesn’t give up on life. Spider man always was my favourite hero and after the last few years losing family and friends he’s definitely my favourite character ever. I’ve felt like I’m at the end of my rope , like my story doesn’t go much farther than this, all it’s been the last few years was pain, suffering and loneliness & just when I thought I found myself again I lost it. she was the best I ever had , and it was my fault she left, I wasn’t enough just like always and I’ve been just in a rotting state since and meanwhile she is blooming like a flower doing so well. I don’t know what to do anymore, she brought me into the light after so many years seeing the world as cruel and unfair and thinking so pessimistic about everything. it’s pain to see how far I’ve fallen from only 2 months ago, this 10 minute video has made me seriously question myself and my thought’s recently. Death has been on my mind , the thought of taking my life ,but funnily enough a video essay on RUclips causes me to reconsider. Maybe it’s becos I feel empty and the thought of giving it all up seems peaceful even but seeing how Peter Parker doesn’t shy away from his fears and darkness is really really inspiring even if he’s just a character I’ve always wanted to have his admirable qualities. I’m writing this down becos I’m convinced I just might go forward with my thoughts and someone who’s at their end doesn’t have much to lose writing all this stuff. I wrote a whole lot , wow I didn’t expect myself to let so much out in a silly little comment section but here we are, the world is headed somewhere I’m not excited about and I’m all alone again like I was before I met her. And that’s the hardest thing to deal with, sometimes I wish I had Peter’s spider power and his willpower. After going through so much loss again and again it’s hard to keep holding onto life, I’ve tried and tried but god it’s a lonely existence even when I distracted myself with drugs, sex and alcohol i couldn’t heal from the pain it only pushed it down into the depths until it came back up again like wood in the water. I always think about how much harder life will be for my mother and sister and family members and friends across this province that I live in if I did go through with my thoughts, that’s the only thing stopping me from doing so. spider man will always be a character I can relate to on a personal level as nerdy as that sounds seeing him get thrown down and beaten up by the world like me countless times he still gets up, doesn’t ever quit and stands up with a smile, always making jokes in tough situations. my whole life has almost felt like an accident like the universe is punishing me for something I never did, every time I’ve found a glimmer of hope and happiness it’s taken away from me just as fast, while everyone else I know has support , people who want to hear their story but it’s different for me and plenty of other men, we’re supposed to “just deal with it” and our emotions are pushed to the sidelines I can’t even control how I feel about talking about it, I just feel shame and embarrassment most times becos it’s how people make you feel when you show just how fragile you actually are. it’s a cold world out there but people like Peter Parker and some of the people I’ve met make it seem almost like I can conquer my demons too and go out into the world as someone who I am proud of and can deal with things himself. I put too much meaning into words and actions and I know that becos in this day and age men like that are not seen as worthwhile by society, and people , we just have to go to work do the time and go home then restart day in day out. “This is just how it is” they say but I don’t want to live like this I want to be someone who changes things for the better who can adapt to anything. but maybe it’s okay that I feel like dying right now because just maybe I’ll find that light at the end of the tunnel again, but that’s hard to believe after all I just got lucky with her. she kept me grounded in reality and now she’s with someone else already, like we didn’t share memories and personal things. I gave up on love and gave it a second chance for her, I ended up being the one who feel deeply in love, it was her who was really into me at first and I was scared of getting with someone again after all my other relationships ended with me being cheated on but I opened up and started to see the world in colour again. the way this show portrays that dark bleak feeling of being so disconnected with the world you see only two colours is so beautiful just like how I only saw two choices before: death or prolonged suffering. And I think the colour is returning to my world slowly but surely I try each day but it’s incredibly difficult nowadays being an adult and all, my friends live in different places and I don’t talk to most of them anymore because they’re not interested. I always give advice to people like I’m some wise man who knows it all but I don’t, I don’t even know what I want anymore I’m lost in a world of black and white seeing only two sides, life and death. I want to live but this existence feels like too much sometimes, it’s hard to live on like this. I doubt this entire thing will be read by a single soul but I hope someone else can get the same kind of inspiration I did, a bittersweet feeling of knowing you can’t change the past , can’t change our mistakes but that we have the ability to be better than we were yesterday no matter how flawed we may be

Dude... thank you for this video. Sincerely. Thank you. I've been mired by depressive anxiety lately. Sure, I'm scaling the corporate ladder, and I just bought a house with my wife of 9 years, and I'm making music with a new band that's reaching people, but I just turned 30, and with that comes looking back with shame and regret over how I treated people when I was younger. I look back at how many people in my life have passed on, and how I hid the pain with drugs and sex, and that shame has made me isolate. In some instances, regression or suicide were viable options.
Last year, after coming out of my last episode, I got a tattoo in viking runes of the phrase "be better," as a reminder that the past is real, but I am a better man and will always strive to be better. And this video reminded me of that. To anyone who is struggling, don't give up and reach out. Friends and family truly are the cure.

Really wish we were able to get a good sequel to the show but at least the ending wasn't bad at all and left it at pretty good odds of staying complete or adding a future project to it. The Venom Arcs were my favorite because when Venom showed up, I always felt this sense of dread and fear for Pete, I love the episode where they fight in Peter's school and he damn near gets outted to the public, I love the episode where Venom ambushes Pete at his own home and abducts Gwen, etc etc etc I love every episode😂awesome vid, and thanks for talkin about an OG dope show💯💯💯

That thumbnail is amazing! Also so nice to see love for thi show's black suit arc. As a kid I was mesmerized by how dark & psychological the show got while still retaining the cool aspects. The Uncle Ben part is still in my memory.

Spectacular Spiderman and the 90s Animated series are the reason I dont have an urge to see Venom in every live action Spiderman adaptation and it's because those 2 shows did it right

Feels so good hearing you talk about a spider-man product you fully love :) dont mean that in a sarcastic way or anything it's genuinely great. Hopefully TAS or TNAS are up next some time

What I always loved about this show are thee villains. Seriously setting them up in each episode in detail just made them more fleshed out. Having Sandman and Rhino as lowly crooks 4 episodes before they get powers made their vendettas against Spider-Man very real. And all of them had amazing banter. Seriously maybe the best versions of the Spider-Man rogues

The Spectacular Spider-Man was exactly that, “Spectacular”. Giving nearly each character depth and having storylines build on each other really makes the story of Spectacular Spider-Man feel like one, consistent, real world. With things in one episode focused on one character, have effects on other characters. A story with multiple strands coming together to create a single, beautiful story. Forever one of the best animated superhero shows of all time.
My only problem with it is Peter’s frustrating inability to keep his eyes on a single girl, but I guess that makes sense cause he’s been a loser since forever and is only now getting attention but dammit petey focus on Gwennnn for f’s sakeeeeee.

My second favorite adaptation of the Web-Head (after Insomniac’s Spider-Man), and definitively the best animated one. Alex, awesome vídeo, as always!

Watching this after ATSP makes it that much more profound. Great insight, my friend.
