Northern must love you G. It seems that you been on Northern trains so many times in different counties in the North of England and with your incredible talent and humour. Most of Yorkshire does have wonderful scenery and amazing places to visit.
When I was at Uni back the late 90’s they used to use a 3 car pacer on the line which was often rammed on busy days. Great to see there are more services in the line these days and 4 car trains.
Shame you lost your phone but still managed to get through the day without it. Great video G and really look lovely that part of Yorkshire. Still need to ride the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and no blue paint on your clothes :p
Your composure when telling us your lost phone tale was brilliant: no panic; just pure calm and 'in control'. Your maturity came across most impressively. Really loving the Esk valley line G, the scenery and stations are exceptionally beautiful. Hope you have your phone back and that no one was too worried about your lack of communication or whereabouts. Looking forward to the next one, stay safe.
What a gorgeous line - thank you for taking us! Instead of doubling up the trains, it would be great if they could double the service on the line but I expect there’s not enough passing places / staff / signalling etc.
Brilliant video G, I'm sorry to hear you lost your phone but I did find from reading the comments that you did get it back which is good. Anyways Lealholm does look like a pretty village, one I've never even heard of infact. But I have heard about the North Yorkshire Moors railway and it's a line I'd love to visit sometime.
Great video, G! Nice to see a line where the stations are close to public toilets - especially with the longer waits between trains. I don't think I've seen a 156 connected to a 158 before either - up here you're more likely to see a 158 coupled up to a 170 instead (which always looks a bit odd)!
I read in one of the railway mags that the early train on the Whitby line has been withdrawn. It's only been around since about 2019, having been introduced yo provide an earlier service from Whitby, something that was cut when train stabling facilities at Whitby were closed around 1991.
Sorry to hear you lost your phone. However it didn't spoil your day nor your presentation. Excellent video yet again G!! Beautiful weather for walking. I love how you wander away from the station and show us what these beautiful places are like. At least you managed to judge the time and never missed a train. Does your camera not have a clock on it? Mine does for time stamping photos and videos I take. Cannot wait to see your next vlog of the rest of the line! Keep 'em coming, Ray xx
Lealholm has a nice sweet shop. That very early train may not run now but it use to skip a number of stops including Gt Ayton,Kildale,Commondale and probably some others east there off. There was a late night one too which skipped a load of stops .The worst shelter on the Esk Valley, excluding the Middlesbrough suburban bit,is Sleights!
Another great uploaded! Really enjoyed it yet again! I look forward to the third part on the Esk Valley line! Plus I hope you had a ride on the NYMR whilst you were up this way!
@@GLovesTrains It’s a great line to travel on behind some great traction! Glad you enjoyed the Esk Valley line whilst you were up here! And I’m glad you got your phone back too!
Great video as always G, some really lovely stations and places along that route. You had glorious weather for it too. I understand the anxiety of losing your phone, its more the anxiety of being out of touch and causing potential worry for others I think. I see from your comment later that you got it back. I can remember the days when we didn't all have them to a man or woman. I don't know how we managed! Thought I heard at Grosmont the characteristic snort of a Class 37 on the NYMR. Could be wrong though. Lealholm was gorgeous but then so were the other places. Thanks for a really super film.
During the winter, the Esk Valley line is usually single 2-car units, and during the summer they are usually doubled up because a single 2-car unit wouldn't cope with the passenger numbers they often get.
Oh wow, they just keep getting more and more beautiful, you know when they say that there is a beautiful area that is just untouched? Well that would be the Esk Valley
Check out Bargoed train station in the South Wales , 17 miles from Cardiff, 8 miles north of Caerphilly. You can get a train from Cardiff straight through to Bargoed, the journey takes 45 minutes. It used to be Bargoed junction but the third train that went from Newport to Brecon is gone, with a cycle track in its place. I much prefer trains.
You have traversed to the eastern side of me this week - sadly we lost our service as a result of the Beeching cuts I believe - the station platforms are still there all eerily overgrown. Until I moved here I had no idea how beautiful this part of the country is - though can be cold and wet lol Castleton is great - that bench you were on is in front of the public loo's and its the only one's I have seen that has sheep wandering around - I once drove past saw a guy open the door to the Gents and a sheep just walked out like it was perfectly normal ha ha ha
im loving every single station on this line so far and its def a line i would love to ride in the future if im ever in that area & the scenery looks lovely in the summer sunshine anyway i cant wait to see the rest of the line towards Whitby awesome vlog
As far as I am aware the early 5am service only worked Monday-Friday but this changed in May 2023. It did only stop at some stations though on the Esk Valley Line and operated more as a positioning route for the early Whitby-Middlesbrough routeing. On a Sunday the 3 North east routes (Newcastle-Carlisle / Hexham-Nunthorpe / Middlesbrough-Whitby) become connected also so services run Carlisle to Middlesbrough, Nunthorpe, Battersby and Whitby! The Whitby route being 6 hours long
Another in the classic series of "G" loves Trains, and it is good to see that the mention of weak bladders and the need for more toilet facilities remains prominent in this episode 👍 😎
Grosmont's s is silent, so it is pronounced Groumont. Also, I think Leaside is pronounced Leeside, same as the suburb Lea on the Blackpool Road in Preston.
Great video G, lovely part of the world and one of my favourite lines! I can get to it for the day from Lancaster with a North Country Rover and get more time in Whitby by travelling to Scarborough and getting there on the Coastliner bus. Surprised you didnt spend more time on the NYMR bit of Grosmont station, you can cross over to these platforms without restriction!
Nice video G, I'll add that line to my list to travel on as it looks sublime for its views. When you said the unlikely combo of 156 and 158, until not long ago EMR did that from Nottingham to Liverpool Lime Street until Northern acquired the 156s, a few are being prepared and reliveried for the move to, I believe, Newton Heath depot

Northern ticket machines have sold rovers and rangers since the end of March, although there was a trial at a handful of stations for a few weeks before then. No idea why they weren't available at the machine you looked at, they should be available on all Northern's TVMs now. There should have been a "Rovers and Rangers" button on the home screen.
You may well get a few comments regarding the pronunciation of Grow-Mont rather than Gross-Mont but to be honest I've heard Ewkston Bawlshaw Lane and Exton Bahlshaw Lane and any combination therein when travelling on that line.
Northern ticket machines are card payment only. The purpose of the "promise to pay" is that anyone who has only got cash with them obtains a "promise to pay" ticket from the ticket machine, which states the origin station and the destination. The promise to pay must be exchanged for a ticket at the first available opportunity, at which point the relevant fare for that journey must be paid (usually either a ticket check on the train or at the ticket barrier at the destination). Failure to obtain a promise to pay before boarding the train is classed as attempted fare evasion, which could result in a hefty fine or criminal record for anybody who is caught
