- [CC] Often when designing, you’ll want to superimpose an image onto a background. In Photoshop, we can do this by clipping an image onto the layer below. But what if we want the background image to define the shape and crop of the image that’s placed on top?
Our tutorial video will show you how a Clipping Mask can take a feature from your background layer to control the visibility of the layer you wish to clip on top. Once you’ve got the hang of how to use them, Clipping Masks will save you a lot of time when creating cool composite images.

Really curious about how do you create your intro mask animation
I had a green screen behind me and a green board in front of me that I leaned over and pretended to hit the switch. I then super imposed the the TV image in using after effects.
@@solopress Thank you for your reply! For the mask animation that done in after effect, do you use masking or track matte?
Thank you. 👍
very to the point... very helpful!!

Ugh, thank you I couldn't remember how to do this unless it involved erasing everything around it.
You're welcome
Love the video. How do I get the image behind the text. My images just lay on top of each other after I "place" them.
Thanks. You need to right click on the layer with the image and select.'create clipping mask'
Thank you sm my teacher doesn’t know how to teach
Happy to help!
Thank you sm ❤
You're so welcome!
Good job thank you
Welcome 😊
Does the pen tool have to be used to select a section for clipping?
The pen tool is probably best when you have to create an intricate or unusual shape, but you can use any of the selection/lasso/magic want tools to make your selection.
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
thank you!
You're welcome!
On my top layer image, "Create Clipping mask" is greyed out. Mine looks exactly like yours. Why can I not choose to create a clipping mask?
A few people have mentioned this. I'm using the latest version of photoshop and having no issues. I'll keep exploring to see if I can find the answer. Thanks for letting me know.
Solopress If the layer you are trying to turn into a clipping mask is a text layer, it won't work. You have to turn the layer into a smart layer or resterize the type first. Not ideal but that's the way round it. Hope that helps.
Thank You So Much...!!!
You're welcome!
Just a few words in and you solved why mask wasn't working. The image or text has be on the bottom or else it won't work. Thanks!!
Glad it helped
i'm following your steps but my Clipping Mask button isn't working (its grey and unclickable). why is this happening?? FYI, one of my images was a drag from my photo gallery and the other is a flattened image of the all the layers i was doing in photoshop (i want that to be inside the dragged image).
I suspect the image you dragged in has been converted to a smart layer. If you select the layer and right click, then go to 'rasterize layer'. You should be able to make the clipping mask after that. Hope that works
@@solopress i've rasterized it, and it's still not letting me click. do you think there could be another reason for that?
thankssss!
You're welcome!
When I use clipping mask for a image I am trying to use (and fit it into a panel on a shoe), it disappears and just shows the outline in pixels of the photo I am trying to fit in the panel. Please help
That's a tricky one. Try checking the blending mode for the layer is set to 'Normal'. Also, check you haven't selected the inverse of your selection too. All too often I inadvertently change a setting without realising it. Good luck
Why it disappeared after clipping mask?☹
Have you moved the order of your layers or added a new layer between the subject layer and the clipping mask layer. That can release the clipping mask, so you just have to reapply it. The only other thing I can think of is to check the opacity setting of your clipping mask layer. See if the transparency is set to 'Normal'. Hope that helps
Hi, what is the difference between photo masking, clipping path, and cut out in photoshop? Can you tell me, please?
Hi Annkur.
'Photo masking' is masking a photo to only show part of the image. This can be done with clipping masks and layer masks.
'Clipping path' or 'paths' are a line created using the pen tool to create bespoke shapes. Once you've created a path you can then convert it into a selection for making masks, etc.
'Cutting out' is a general term for using the above methods. For example, you could make a path around the shape of a flower, turn the path into a selection and then copy and paste the flower onto a new layer. That's one example of cutting out.
Hope that helps
Is there a way to do it in Photoshop Elements?
Sorry, I don't know.
why it doesnt work when i clip a layer with design.? only in image layer ?

No probs 👍
Masking like a reply to groups. but when you want to reply on someone indiviidualy it called as cliping mask.
I tried but the clipping mask doesn't work at all. So annoying.

@@solopress No it is not text, is basically an aeroplane window and I would like to put an image inside but doesn't work.
nothing happens for me
thx

Don't talk about the program you're not using.
thanks for the feeedback
Don't understand the point of clipping mask
You have to separate the pixels you wanna use from the rest of the image in order to make a clipping mask
So why not just delete those pixels and put the image you want to appear on the screen on a layer below that
It's a valid point, and like with most of these programmes, there are more than one way to skin a cat. I prefer using masks instead of deleting because they are less permanent; you can go back and make changes and make things reappear if you change your mind, etc.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
