I'm gonna be honest, you explained all this better in just a few minutes than my graphic design professors did in two hours. I learned more with these videos so for that I have to thank you wholeheartedly.
You do an incredible job of not only explaining things but to where they make sense. I love how you always use an example with how it would be used traditionally with art. Thank you, Nadiaxel for your commitment to your craft and sharing it with others!
Omg thank you so much i was wrecking my brain on how to not go out my lines when i paint so i spent so many times to rub off the color lmao, moreover i didn't know how to use clipping masks !!
Nadia, you introduced an idea to me that spread like wildfire in my mind several months ago. The idea that you don't have to go to art school to be good or even great at creating beautiful art! I almost couldn't believe my eyes at how you change mundane strokes of a brush into something that looks so lifelike I touch my monitor just to make sure sometimes :P Seriously, thank you so much. You inspire the hell out of me, please keep being you girl :) (p.s. I love your voice, it's so calming)
Jack Norvell wow, Jack, thank you so much for telling me all of this ☺️😊 It made my entire day!!! In my country we don’t have art schools per say, so it was never an option for me. I always had to rely on books, online materials and my own discipline to move forward. And today I work fulltime with my art - having an education that doesn’t even relate to my craft haha. So I was very happy to read your comment - it means thr world to be to know I can do a difference with my work. Thank you so much 🙏❤️
the whole mask of a mask thing just changed my life. being able to lasso the whole character and then lasso the separate parts without worrying about it being perfect has been a godsend
I can't believe how easy this actually is! An hour ago I was almost crying at how weird this whole PS Clipping Mask system works. I do a digital art course at the moment and the teacher uses the normal photoshop solid color, hue and saturation and also curve Clipping Masks, and it wouldn't work for me. She concealed the clipping masks, so it was filled with black color, then could add / do the things she wanted to, which wouldn't work for me. Only when it was white or inverted. I honestly did almost lose my mind. BUT THEN I FOUND YOUR VIDEO AND NOW EVERYTHING WORKS - WAYYYY EASIER. YOU are my hero, thank you from the bottom of my heart 💖💖💖
Finally I could apply my layering method in CSP into photoshop. In CSP you could just simply clip the layer group to layer base below, while in photoshop you could create selection from base layer first and then add the layer mask to your layer group. This is Gold! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I wanna cry :(
This, THIS is the best video to use when learning how to use clipping masks, layer masks and using layer blending effects. Thank you so much for making it.
I COULD KISS U RIGHT NOW ONE OF MY FAVORITE ARTISTS WAS USING A TECHNIQUE WITH MASKS AND I KNEW IT WAS SOMETHING WITH MASKS BUT BECAUSE IM A NOOB I COULDNT FIGURE OUT WHAT EXACTLY IT WAS SHE WAS DOING AND THIS VIDEO TAUGHT ME EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED I COULD HAPPY CRY RN LMAOO THANK U
i love this tutorial. artists are doing in when they stream of make vids, but none of them are showing how they do it and what process they go through step by step like this does, they just tell you they're "masking" but dont tell you how to do it. it took so long to find this vid for me which is exactly that i needed to learn and not just figure it out my self when artists tell you what tool theyre using.

Self-taught artist here, started traditionally and jumped to digital art. I mentally and literally upped my game watching your videos. Thank You Nadia, stay safe, healthy and keep making awesome arts and videos...
Thank you for this! My autism makes it difficult to process and understand things sometimes (it's frustrating as hell) and this helped explain things so easily
I am so amazed at how easy you make it look to work in photoshop! I remember when Adobe introduced so many abilities to layers! I thought the addition of layers could not be topped, good thing I was wrong! You are so generous and kind to show your expertise. I often wish RUclips had been around when I was learning photoshop! I remember paying an “expert” to come to the studio where several of us worked to be trained. I was so disappointed when I had to show her how to use the lasso tool with the option key for working with my selection! She was no expert in my mind, NOT like YOU ARE! Keep going just as you are, really enjoying watching your videos. Take care and be safe!
Hey!👋 New artist here, and yep your tutorial made a world of difference to me coloring digitally since I don’t have to constantly erase overlapping colors form my lines. Thank you so much!
thank you so much for this! this was very very helpful and revelatory! this is because many artists show how to color their work but not how to control the layers so whenever I watch tutorials I get confused as to how they used their layers so efficiently. now, I know why! thank you so much again
Spiritless Wolf that is also a really good method!! 🤟 I don’t entirely trust the selections made by the magic wand tool to go close enough to my lines though xD but then again I could’ve just expamded the selection afterwards C: thanks for sharing the pro tip 🤗
This is a great technique, but alternatively, if you are prone to not closing off all your lines (like I do, especially in hair), the wand is useless at this point. So laso is great for open lineart :)
Wow, thank you so much for this explanation! I've known of clipping masks and seen people use it, but usually they would do things so quickly, I wasn't sure exactly HOW they accomplished it! Thanks again!
When I paint I colour the illustration in one solod colour then add a bunch of clippong masks on top each other for the individual colouring, it works kind of the same way
Truly helpful. I am just starting to get into digital art and as someone who has been struggling to understand layers for a few weeks now, this really sheds a lot of light into the matter. THANK YOU!
I am. SO HAPPY. Thaat I found your channel AFTER you updated with part 2. I knew some basics about layers and adjustments (and I think about one specific way to use masks) because my father, as a photographer, taught me and my sister to mess around a little because we wanted to change our eyes' colors. Now that I actually need to use layers in a more practical manner, I was completely lost, so it's helped a bunch. Thanks.
WOW Thank you SO MUCH!! I have been scared of using layer masks and clipping masks because tutorials made them sound way more complicated than they really are. Your explanation was precise and simple, so thank you so much! This will DEFINITELY help with workflow!!
took me 3 times watching your video to muster up the courage to actually follow along during the fourth watch through. once I've done it my self, it doesn't seem so daunting. hahaha. thank you very much for this detailed and entertaining video!!!
Thanks for this video: you're a really great teacher. Everything you say is very and concise I've been using selections & clipping masks (along with locking transparent pixels) to achieve similar things, but this seems really interesting. I played around with this and it's super easy to expand or resize the clipping mask even after it's created. Seems very flexible
SUPERB! You explained that perfectly! Totally going to be using clipping masks in future. I used them a little bit such as the circle border but not to separate the areas of the character. That was great! ✨✨✨💖
I work on infinite painter and tried this method of layering. Wow it works beautifully. As long as the grey fill layer is clean, it works beautifully. Now all i can hope is that the program won’t crash due to having so many layers active😅
omg i just bought my very first tablet, decided to watch your videos, and am just in time for the Skillshare signup! I feel so lucky, thank you Nadiaxel, this will further help me figure out an entirely new medium I've never used before.
I love the last tip you showed, I always asked myself what that was for, and it's super cool. I tried it with Clip Studio and it worked great, thanks for this great tutorial, it helped me a lot to understand what those tools work for, which I never understood until now. Seriously, thank you very much.
Nadiaxel and thank you for making this such an easy process to understand! 💕 other videos tend to lose me, and I haven’t had that issue with any of your videos ☺️
Thanks for this, I just finished a lineart for a piece and was exploring new ways to shade/color. I looked up layer masks 100% randomly and turns out it has to do with coloring shading so that was convenient lol. I hope this works with vector layers as I may want to mess around with line width after the fact, I like this method best instead of creating a bunch of selection or reference layers
It took awhile to get the fill layer. Once I finally got it and then got the sub sections... then I drew in one and it worked! Omg, sqweeee 🤗🤩 Thanks, this was very helpful.
This really helps me understand more about the tools. I'm a newb in digital art and I was overwhelmed with the number of tools displayed the first time I opened PS, like WHAT IS THAT, WHAT ARE THOSE? HOW DOES DIGITAL ARTISTS EVEN WORK WITH THESE?
Yes yes yes that final organization at the end was exactly what I was looking for but didnt know!!!! Also great explanation. I was working with with multiple non-nested layer mask and at some point it was a mess.
I really loved the way you creatively presented the content, using animated characters. it was smooth to understand with your medium pace of instruction. looking forward to more such tutorials from you. Thank you, very much.
I'm sure this is in some way rewarding or at least nice to hear so I thought I would say thank you for this two-part series. I'm currently diving into digital art and this was very helpful. I have been wondering what to do with those masks but it will surely take a long time to get familiar with all the things layers and their settings are capable of. Still I'm glad to try this medium - most art supplies have always been too expensive for me so it's very pleasant to finaly learn how to color a sketch and I don't have to feel like I will ruin a piece or waste money by just experimenting. I know I have a long way ahead (the next step will probably be buying a PC and a tablet so I have a larger area to work with, drawing on my phone in my hand compared to paper on a desk might be easier on my back but I get the feeling that the missing shortcuts and small display space slow down everything significantly) - but now I think I'm at least a bit closer to understanding the capabilities of the tool I've been given.
This is like the third time i watched this video! again thank you so much for this amazing guide! I use a lot of layers with clipping masks and have to select everything one by one so this made my life so much easier! Keep up the amazing job!
I am sooooo grateful you made this, absolutely love it. Just tried the method myself and I love it. Im so glad I came across this video. This is a game changer. Thank you so much Nadiaxel.
I don't know what drawing program you use, but even though my program doesn't seem to have those functions, this video helped me get an idea to use the tools I do have as masks. Thank you!
So easy explanation Thank you so much I am a beginner and trying my best to surpass every other present artist. My dream is to become an animator and illustrator also programmer.

One of the best Masking Tutorials, Hands down!
