Here in Brasil we have the "Ipê Amarelo" that is a tree witch blooms at the dry weather of the winter. Before blooming the tree gets completely naked from its leaves, the flowers has a bright vivid yellow and last no longer them two or tree days. Cheers!!!
The idea that something is more beautiful the more temporary it is, reminds me of a travel documentary I saw on tv a long time ago. These religious monks spent several days working twelve hours a day building a multi colored piece of sand art slowly and carefully. After just two days, the sand art was destroyed. My first thought when I saw this was "It is such a shame that the sand art painting only stays intact for half the time it took to assemble. It is so sad that so much hard work is being destroyed."
Our obsession with permanence can be harmful, just look at how plastic lasts forever and now they are just floating in the ocean as endless garbage. Maybe it’s better to have more things that can be appreciated in the present moment and then goes back to nothingness, leaving only memory.

Where I used to live as a child, there were some small trees with dark purplish foliage, amidst a lawn in a garden in front of the apartments building. Every spring the gardener pruned the branches. After a while, new branches appeared, and new foliage. One year, that gardener left. The new one didn't prune the trees. Then, we realized those were ornamental plum trees (very alike to sakura trees), that they bloomed in pink and white, that their flowers were delicately scented, and that when the flowers withered, the petals fell like snow all over the garden. Those trees were never pruned again.
"They blossom beautifully but wither quickly", we have a similar concept here in Spain, we have a saying _lo bueno, si breve, dos veces bueno_ which roughly means "good things, if brief, are twice as good". Edit: we also have cherry trees in Spain in _El Valle del Jerte_ , a true treasure.
I had the pleasure of viewing the cherry blossoms in Washington D.C. several years ago. It really is quite pleasant (if you block out the tourist noises).

We have white cherry blossoms along a row of houses down a road where I live in Northern Ireland, they are about to bloom, everything is covered like confetti when it happens, and when you drive by on a breezy day it rains across the road, it's very nice.

They really are beautiful to see. I have many Jacaranda and Royal Poinciana trees planted on my property, it creates such a wonderful zen like atmosphere. Perfect to relax, practice Hema and enjoy tea when they are in bloom. So many blue and red flowers. Also enjoy the live oak trees as well, but the flowers are jsut amazing. I was a bit surprised though that people leaving trash behind is something that happens while people are enjoying Hanami. For the beauty they provide us, and the amazing peaceful environment, personally id see that as a show of great disrespect to the Sakura. Even on my own property, I couldn't imagine just leaving some trash out there amongst the trees.
I live in south Sweden and close to where I li4ve there is a small narrow valley the west wall of the valley is cliffy. The east valley is soft hills. In the bortom of the valley a creek flows merrily in spring. And all over the valle y grows very old cherry trees. It is stunning in may when the wild cherrys blossom. It is white bloom. Like a fairy tale. Ten years ago It was fairly uncommon and mostly locals came to walk there and have picknick during the bloom. Now pple come from the whole district. It is privately owned land, but the farmer waits to let his cows to pasture until after the bloom. The place is called körsbärsdalen and is close to the village of Veberöd if annons want too Google pictures.
We got trees here that bloom flowers shortly in the spring. Dunno what kinds they are. But there’s a few days every year when the sky just rains pedals. And I know weed is a bit of a taboo in Japan but being a stoner one of the most spiritual experiences I’ve had was eating an apple outside. Smoking a fat joint. Laying while being covered in pedals. It was breath taking

I visited in February, and stone fruit blossoms were just coming in at the time-mostly plum, I think. Very beautiful, and I loved seeing how many people flocked to see them. I liked how old men would stand very close to the branches and just smell the air. Not something you see in America. Can only imagine what it’s like when cherry blossoms hit their peak.

this might be a late comment but I want to say it anyway I love your videos and content, I have been intrested in Japanese culture,language and history for some years now and your videos are very intresting and fun to follow. Here in Sweden we actually have some cherry blossoms in Stockholm in a place called Kungsträdgården in Swedish and its a sight to see in the spring here its a tradition I have set by myself to go in there every spring to see them :D and have a little picnic :D

I love this tradition! Oohanami is one of the events that we are planning with the samurai reenactment group that I'm building from scratch, here in Antwerpen in Belgium. In the beginning, this will be without spectators, as we're not yet ready to go public. But on the long run, we should be aiming to organise this for an audience.
The only thing I do NOT like, is paper/plastic cutlery and dishes. That's an absolute no-go! Think of the environment! Don't bring any trash with you, so you won't leave any trash behind! This means also: don't bring pre-packed food. Only bring food you have wrapped in materials that you'll reuse, if needed: Tupperware-like boxes!

Around these parts, here in Ohio, the abundant spring trees which are seen everywhere in nature are the dogwood trees. There is a great legend about the dogwood that the wood for Christ's cross was taken from the dogwood. That is why its blossoms look the way they do & why its wood looks as it does.
Thank you! This is very interesting. I actually went to Japan in 2019 for 6 weeks and I chose the hanami season on purpose. I was lucky enough to see them in full bloom in Tokyo, Kyoto AND Osaka and the beauty of the view is hard to describe. The first time I went to view the sakura blossoms was in Kyoto and there was a park with blankets already laid out for the public. I bought fried noodles from a food stand and sat down to eat there. I was really struggling to eat with the chopsticks and while I think some people looked at me funny for it, there was a very kind woman who came to my rescue and showed me how to properly handle chopsticks (although, it took more than this one demonstration to get better at it during these 6 weeks). Really nice! In Osaka... well to be honest I don't even know if it was in Osaka. See, I met a girl via Tinder and she wanted to show me around and she took me to a huge park with countless different sakura trees with name plates. We went via various train stations, so it might as well not have been Osaka anymore? I don't even know. But yeah that was a fantastic evening. Strolling around together, viewing the sakura, then buying food from various stands and eating them together. I wouldn't have tasted half the foods I did if I didn't have a local there to point them out to me. And we ended it with karaoke. It was an amazing time. Such a shame I was only in Japan for 6 weeks and we all know how 2020 went... covid struck... It'll be a long time before I can visit again.

I miss my great mr and mothers cherry tree she had a big one she planted when she forayed moved and when the seeds would fall across the fence the nehbours used to get upset Wich I never understood like why deny a beauty of a plant without even trying but the kept the tree and the trees are growing great :I am Canada by the way

My wife and I went to a sakura festival in Aomori at Hirosaki Castle. It was like it was snowing pink snowflakes. It was amazing.
