From the celebrated Oscar®-nominated director Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu, creator of Mirai, Wolf Children, Summer Wars, and more, comes a fantastical, yet beautiful and contemporary thematic story of one girl’s growth in the age of social media.
Suzu is a 17-year-old high school student living in a rural village with her father. For years, she has only been a shadow of herself. One day, she enters “U,” a virtual world of 5 billion members on the Internet. There, she is not Suzu anymore but Belle, a world-famous singer. She soon meets with a mysterious creature. Together, they embark on a journey of adventures, challenges and love, in their quest to become who they truly are.
This is the first anime movie that I actually want to watch in English. Kylie McNeil’s voice is just beautiful, and the whole dub in general sounds good.
I think as far as animated musicals go, it is so much better to watch them in a language you can understand instead of reading everything, which can make you not appreciate the music and visuals enough. I think the same could apply to live-action, but generally their songs are never lyrically translated, so it doesn't matter anyway lol.
@@KnotPhound I grew up watching subtitled content, and I read fast, so I’m okay with it. Just personally speaking, sometimes English dub actors sound dead inside, some are expressive but it’s done horribly, so I rather watch content in their original language. I’m glad Belle isn’t the case tho.
@@tillie3545 The thing with English dubs that are translations from foreign media is that a lot of times, instead of using well prepared actors, the ones in charge are just unexperienced freelancers because they're much cheaper. On the contrary, Ghibli movies have very well known Hollywood actors since they used to be distributed by Disney for so long. Gkids actually makes really high quality English dubs too.
And of course you have a some of other shows such as Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Hellsing Ultimate, Black Lagoon, etc. where their English versions are even better than their Japanese counterparts.
You just missed the intended film.... :'(
I watched this in Japanese when it came out originally. This movie is absolutely stunning in soany ways.
I’m so glad that they dubbed the singing! Up until fairly recently, none of the companies that dub anime were willing or able to have someone dub over the songs
True. And most of the time when they do try to localize a song, something is off enough to make sound no where near as pleasing as the original. Be it the lyrics, the meaning, the tempo, or even the singer's voice will throw people off. But they seem to have put in TONS of effort to avoid the common pitfalls for this movie.
That's because quite often the Japanese company won't let them as they want to promote the Japanese singer using the anime.
Your Name did dub over the songs. The problem is the translated lyrics did not line up with the beats of the melody nor rhyme the same way as the original. They did a good job with it when compared to other translated or contrafactum songs. Problem is to a native English speaker the English translated songs sound bad when compared to the original.
For that movie the English dub with the Japanese songs is great. The problem is translating music is incredibly hard.
I hope Belle does do a good job with translating the songs. The song in this video sounds like they might have managed to avoid these pitfalls.
The song is hella good in both too
@@RyanCWilliams I think that's mostly because Radwimps lead singer, Yojiro Noda, did the translation himself because he knew English from living in the US at a young age. Milan Records, who released the English version of the soundtrack for Belle, said that the album was in collaboration with GKIDS and NYAV Post. They most likely had professional lyricists and translators on board to make these songs work.
I feel like the translators deserve a ton of credit here too. Not only is Kylie amazing but you can tell a lot of effort went in to crafting translations that fit the songs and lip flaps as best as possible.
I want to see this in a movie theater so badly...😭
Tomorrow and or Friday
SAMEEE BUT IM GOING TO BE GOING TO MAMMOTH THE DAY IT COMES OUT 😭😭😭
I wish it was showing in my country soooo much!!! 😭😭 but they don't show anime here at all
Thanks!! It was a real team effort. A lot of blood sweat and love went into this English language version. I hope people like it!
@@michaelsinterniklaas7764 I Loved it, Kudos to you and the entire cast, you all did a fantastic job.
I already watched this in Japanese with Eng sub but this will be the first movie I don't mind rewatching again in Eng dub. The translation quality here is top notch and it deserves recognition -- especially the lyrics.
As soon as I got into my car to drive home after I left the subbed showing, I tried to pull this song up on Spotify, and somehow I got the English version first, and was floored to find out that the lyrics to the English song were, as far as I can tell, identical to the subbed lyrics I'd read just 2 hours before.
I watched the movie twice, back to back, subbed then dubbed. There is nothing lost in translation imo. I was amazed at how close the two were. Even the songs matched almost word for word
@@flameball5373 where did you watch it pleaseeee
@@julessnake9318 it’s not in every theater, but there was one near me that played it. In the Midwest
@@flameball5373 don't mean to burst your bubble... but there were ALOT of lines changed and they just didn't have the same impact. Main example is when The Beast (Kei) says "I love you" to Belle in Japanese and he gets shut down by Belle whereas in English it's "You're my hero" to me that's really realllyyy not the same impact.
Also Belle's first song she sings when she gets into U, Gales of Song or Uta yo, most of the lyrics are different like I don't think a single word matches up except for maybe "song" however, like u said nothing was lost in translation for this song both do have the same feelings and meanings across the languages it's just that, unlike u said, the song is absolutely not word for word and none of the songs are even close to word for word.
Despite some of the flaws I had with the movie, this opening scene was so well done and sucked me into the world of U. The small screen of RUclips does not do it justice, it'll blow your mind when watching on a big theatre screen and sound system!
It is soooo true !!
Just watched it yesterday on theater, and during the song you can hear the claping and the claiming from the crowd. It was soo good. *.*
Music and animation were beautiful, but the story lacked any meaningful context.
@@faulty83logic wrong
Definitivamente, la experiencia de una pantalla de cine.
Bruh I watched the movie and my theater didn’t even bother turning off the lights I was pissed off
Belle blew me away. It moved me to tears. The anime is a gentle modern fairy tale of love and loss, and kindness. And the music weaves it together, it was like listening to a rainbow. Kylie McNeil’s sweet ethereal voice is so clear and powerful, uplifting with delicate strong notes resonating of Celine Dion. The music, the movie should win some awards.
She reminds me of Celine and Paige O'Hara, who voiced and sang for Belle in "Beauty and the Beast." ETA: I cried at points too. I understand Suzu's grief, and how she couldn't sing in the real world. The pain of losing her mother was enough to cause singing to be painful.
That lame and ridiculous movie moved you to tears ? DAMN.
@shizukagozen777: Excuse me, but if you didn’t like the movie, there’s no need to be rude to those of us who did? Didn’t the caregivers in your life teach you how to be polite?
@@PeachWookiee
Of course I didn't like it, it was a TERRIBLE movie.
How was I rude ?
@@shizukagozen777 I guess I was correct in my supposition. John Lava and I admitted to being moved by the movie, and your statement indicates that you think our doing so is somehow bad. Perhaps you need to take a remedial course in manners.
2:11 her little movements with the beat and lyrics she’s singing are so in sync it’s life like
The “lalalai when our heart beats collide” is so beautiful 😭
IMAX baby let's gooooooooo
By the way, I love how Belle is introduced by seeing her from quite a distance riding a whale with speakers on its back. Makes you really want to know who this person is and builds the mystique
It also makes me realize, having seen Hosoda's other films, that the guy must really like whales.
They're like pigs for Miyazaki: they're not in all his stuff, but they keep showing up.
Right? The speakers are like shells in real life
When they said “you may not be able to start over in the real world, but you can start over in the world of U.”
That made me kind of tear up, this honestly goes deep for a lot of people-
I heard this got a standing ovation at Cannes... for 14 minutes! I can see why. This sure tempts me to break quarantine to see it in a theater.
It's worth it to see it in a movie theater
It is spectacular, and absolutely deserving of that ovation (although 14 minutes makes me feel like after a while they just wanted to see how long they could keep it up).
Any ovation over 30 seconds is mass-hysteria. Long standing ovations are cringe
@@FlyingFocs it's good for like 4 tracks. Suzu is pretty basic, story n all. That in mind, it's an all time great intro.
Take some extra vitamin D and go for it.
Kylie McNeil does a better job than could be expected and comes close to singing as beautifully as Kaho Nakamura. The French dub doesn’t seem as good. Of course ‘U’ further demonstrates the genius of Daiki Tsuneta
Did the French dub redo the songs too?
@@SnowWolfAlpha Yes.
@@SnowWolfAlpha yes but even the singer that did Belle in french didn't understand why she were chosen for Belle bc she knows her voice doesn't really match x)
Even the German Dub sounds just like Kaho and Kylie
So beautiful this movie will get some kind of award... it has to!
No
As much as I'm a fan of Hosoda's movie, this movie let me down in the weak story and characters, which they used to be his strongest aspects in his past movies like Summer Wars and Wolf Children.
This year have a lot of good shit
@ShishigamiXVII My problem is that they are shallow and lack of proper development. It didn't give me enough to care about why Belle wanted to help the Beast in U, other than just the typical "Oh he's hurt and lonely, I need to help him" excuse, and there was barely any to no chemistry between them. And the twist reveal in the third act was like those twist villain from the recent Disney CG animated movies where they were showed up early in the movie but literally forgotten until the end, so I couldn't connect or get to know any of them for that twist to work.
@@ryantheanimator1156 I think she captivated by him, that why she want to know more about him...
Belle's design is STUNNING! I love how she is animated!
Summer Wars is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I've always wanted Hosoda to make a new movie with a similar feel. Looks like my wish was granted! 😁
Within 2 seconds of seeing the virtual reality I yelled "this is the sequel to Summer Wars"!
His digimon movie is the prequel to summer wars
This is like Summer Wars meets Beauty & The Beast
@@Peter32tjrksor which one?
@@djbneozen if it’s okay I can answer that! It’s Digimon: The movie from 2000. The Second act is basically like a smaller-scale version of summer wars.
I won’t stop praising this intro it’s so Powerful with that Percussion from that snare drum and the horns the marimba my god so many other sounds that they put together and those Vocals both from JP and EN delivered at 1000% the first and the last song Gave me Goosebumps but that last one was making my heart cry the Atmosphere they made for those Scenes Epic I was in total awe loved this movie , if it’s one thing I love about Anime when they get it Right is Atmosphere and they gave plenty of that with the beautiful Animation , Music and the Story haven’t seen an Anime movie quite like this one , It separates itself it’s in its own class.
I watched it last night in theaters and I'll be honest, it got me bawling my eyes out near the end. Very emotional. I even got my sister, who isn't an anime fan, to watch this, and she absolutely loved it.
I’m very emotional, so I know I’m definitely going to be crying lmao (already teared up a bit listening to a certain song in the soundtrack.. I think it was “lends me your voice”) sadly I don’t think I’m able to see it in theaters, even though there is one behind my house
The story wasn't very good, and I cried during the whole first movie of violet ever garden and at the tree scene of Mirai. I did cry with this movie during the song scenes they were crafted beautifully, but the story was pretty lame for myself.
I’ll be dropping everything just to watch the movie once it comes out for streaming. I literally can’t wait.
When I watched this scene in Japan, I was overwhelmed and got goosebumps immediately. It was Japanese sub, but English dub is so perfect too, and now I’m getting goosebumps again.
my head-cannon is that after the events of Summer Wars, people lost confidence in OZ. causing it to lose revenue quickly. at some point the company behind the body-sharing devices seen at the beginning of Belle acquires OZ. and re-launches it as a U incorporating biometric scanning technology to avoid another massive account theft like what love machine did in Summer Wars.
I relate to this movie in a way, because I am a vtuber and I don't like revealing my face in the internet world because I am really camera shy and can get nervous. Although not nervous when I talk or sing with my voice :)
Hahah wait til u see the movie
If I was the main character I’m this movie I never get nervous and show everyone who I am why because that’s who I am but I’m sure you’ll face your fears one day trust me
Let me tell something to you you don’t want to show your face that’s understoodable I don’t blame you when I was a kid I wanted to hide my face to but hey I became me because I rather show my face rather than hide it in a mask it’s like The Haunted Mask moral accept who you truly are don’t hide yourself in a mask trust me I hidden myself to but one day I became happy and who knows one day you’ll be like me too but you should do what you do cause that’s the David way you do it your way 👍
This being the opening scene, while also using it as the ending scene is remarkable, I'm so excited for this movie to come out.
I'm a HUGE fan of Hosoda, my favorite film by him is Summer wars and this felt like Summer Wars' successor in every form, right down to the digital world. I could honestly believe that this is years after the events of Summer Wars and that U is the updated form of OZ.
Just saw it in IMAX and damn, the opening scene really got my adrenaline running! Really felt like I was flying!
DUDE I WATCHED THIS MOVIE LAST NIGHT AND I HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY OBSESSED. THE MUSIC, THE PLOT, AND THE WHOLE IDEA OF THIS. ITS JUST AMAZING. I AM SUCH A NERD 😭
In all honesty the English dub is incredible both Japanese and English are phenomenal and the singers Kaho and Kylie sound identical that you think the Japanese singer is singing the English versions too, wish more English dubs were like Belle
This opening scene was so good, I went to see the movie a second time just to experience it in IMAX. What a ride. So breathtakingly beautiful I was in tears from the opening alone.
I saw this subbed (dubbed wasn't available) in a theater last night with my grandma and we were both moved to tears! It is a PHENOMENAL movie!! I've heard good things about the dub, too! We would've have minded seeing it dubbed but the subbed one was the only one at our theater. My grandma gives her congratulations and enjoyment to everyone who worked on it!
IM SO PISSED I ONLY DISCOVERED THIS MOVIE YESTERDAY
god i wish i could have seen this masterpiece in theatures
And who ever plays suzu/belle sounds like a fucking goddess
IK SAME
Kylie McNeil. Wanna know something wild? She was a Tik-Tok talent whom the director discovered, and immediately said "That's our Belle."
Ugh this movie was AMAZING, and the soundtrack?? outstandingly beautiful!!! I barely watched it today and I’m still listening to the music, I highly suggest everyone watches it, this movie made me and my niece so happy..and I may have cried a little..kinda made me wish we had a world like U
I wish this movie would stay in theaters - it deserves the big screen! The music is outstanding!
Belle is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Many people state flaws about it, but I find most of those just make it better for me. Suzu/Belle is such a likable and relatable character. I could go on forever about how great this movie is. And it all starts with this opening scene.
When I went to see this in theatres I went blind so I was blown away by this opening number! Truly a amazing start to a amazing beautiful movie!
This was such a beautiful movie, and same goes for the music. I also love how that whale has speakers surrounding it like barnacles, which is really creative.
Kylie McNeil is truly amazing 🤩👍
Bro this scene threw me back in my seat and it was only the beginning of the movie
I saw it today, and it's one of the most visually stunning films I've ever seen in my life. A true work of art.
This movie is an absolute masterpiece! My heart felt all of it. Truly special.
Very Strong Throwback to Summer Wars opening sequence but now with disney like Song Number.
The movie was so amazing! It made me almost cry twice! The way it switched from 2d to 3d was just awesome! And the fact that it's in the beauty and the beast category makes it even better! The ballroom scene was amazing and the way the roses turn into outfits is even better!
I saw the movie in theaters yesterday and it was Japanese dubbed.
Saw this movie yesterday with a friend and the movie was gorgeous, stunning, and just...AAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!!! The dub cast did an awsome job and I could tell they really put their heart and soul into this movie!!!! Will DEFINITELY buy if and when it comes out on blu-ray and DVD 😍😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰
When the opening brings you to tears, you know it's gonna be a goodass movie.
I just went and saw this movie and it was absolutely amazing. Kylie's voice for Belle's character fits perfectly.
This movie has been the only movie making me remotely close to crying, fucking love it, the author is so good at making the characters relateable.
This song is gonna be stuck in my head for a while. And I mean that in the BEST way! It is really catchy, colorful, and cool. Can't wait to see the movie!
I've got some Summer Wars vibes! Yessss!
there's theories that this is in the same universe as that movie!
To be honest my theories about this movie it takes place in the universe of Ready Player One and Ready Player Two considering the film gives me that vibe
A strong rumor about this movie was that there were going to be adaptations of stories within the world of U. It was said that the next one would be about Sleeping Beauty, and it would be about a girl in a coma who was connected (something like SAO)
In my opinion this is, without fear of saying it, one of the best introductions to animated films in history, the beginning of this film is simply spectacular, and I say this very independently of the rest (I clarify this because, subjectively, I really liked this film, but I also know that many people don't), regardless of whether it has narrative errors or not, the first 5 minutes of introduction (from the beginning of the song until the title of the movie comes out) is a masterpiece with all the lyrics and we have to recognize that
Can’t wait, loved it in sub. Hasoda makes wonderful movies, totally Ghibli quality.
I’ll be honest I love the concert whale mount she rides on while singing
He’s this generation’s Miyazaki imo, nothing can truly replace ghibli, but his movies make such an impact, it’s incredible
the best animation of the decade so far, next to Arcane of course..
I actually just went to see this movie with a new friend tonight. It was amazingly beautiful very relatable and just amazing and very very deep had a great message. I strongly recommend to whoever is reading this that you would definitely go see this movie it was incredibly awesome. It the best anime film I have ever seen in a long time.
Remarkably beautiful!!
I just saw this today in the theater and I really enjoyed it. Oh there's a few moments where the pacing is a little off, but it's also meant for a different audience than Americans. Overall it was really good and I recommend it.
The way I had no idea this movie was a beauty and the beast story, and I didn’t realize it until the very end of the movie.
Omg I literally never had such emotional attachment to a movie like this one did to me ❤ the art, the emotional investment in Suzu and hearing her sing, what a wonderfully beautiful movie! Rewatch worthy, I'd say!
This is the 2nd anime movie I’m watching in years. When I was little, my sis and my mom remember another one called Ponyo.
I saw that one too. It’s was colorful 😄
After almost a year. I’m going to see it in theaters! This is my first Mamoru Hosoda film
Even though I’ve watched this incredible film countless times this one scene is so mesmerising
been looking forward to this for a few months now. nice to finally see it.
Alright, they nailed one song. And if this is of any indication, we won't need to worry about the other three.
There's the English Medley on the official Belle channel, they've done a great job with the songs (the video shows later scenes in the movie, so if you're avoiding all spoilers keep that in mind)
Greetings from.... 7 days in the future.
She did it. Kylie f.cking NAILED EACH AND EVERY LAST ONE.
This is the first Anime that I didn’t hate the English voice acting/singing. Truly amazing.
Belle is the most underrated movie I’ve seen
I'm not all that into social media but if there's a social media website like u in existence I'd be all for it
Just saw this movie in the English dub, and it was wonderful! They did an excellent job on translating meaning, tone and emotion, and it is so captivating to be able to hear such beautiful songs and be able to understand than!
So beautiful.
2:20 uh oh back up quick before her singing hypnotizes me
I do liked this version of Millennium Parade song in English Dubbed now that understand the song properly .
I got to see this in theaters and woowwww I had to experience all of the details HD on a big screen and it was WORTH IT
Wow! I've already got the sub version on my phone. But this dub sounds amazing!!
OMG lucky!!!
I’m so glad for this video, I just saw it in theaters but I missed this scene because I assumed they would play movie trailers before the movie starts but they didn’t! Ah well, at least I got to see it here but be warned for those of you who plan to watch it: BE EARLY!!!!
CANT WAIT😩
Best anime movie I’ve seen in a while and this song became my favorite
I don't remember the last time a movie has made me both enjoy, and FEEL as much as I did with the many moments that occured in this movie......this truly was an incredible ride!
I just got the ad for this and I’m obsessed. I also really like that it’s musically oriented
I really can’t wait for the dvd to be released for this so then I can scream in excitement in my room
Wow this is the first time i actually liked the dub of an anime, i always watch sub so i don't know. I watched this movie in sub aswell but might watch it again in English
Going to see this in IMAX tonight. Can't wait!!!
Saw it Last Night In IMAX Theater and it was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Totally worth seeing it in Theater.
I can't be the only one to get deja vu to the opening scene of Summer Wars when looking at this intro
There's a visual parallel in this opening scene to Hosoda's previous 2009 film, Summer Wars. In Summer Wars, when the exposition is giving an example of an avatar, the first character in the film we see is a little chibi bunny wearing a teal cowboy hat. 13 years later, in Belle, the first avatar we see in U is a bunny girl wearing a cowboy hat and a teal dress. This may not have been the most well-written film in Hosoda's oeuvre, but the reference to his own work shows such careful attention to visual detail.
How does this opening keep me motivated and pumped up how does the song Belle sings keep me pumped up and motivated
This movie was so good. Definitely had a good twist on the beauty and the beast trope

I watched this movie in its english sub the other day and the music and vocals were amazing! I am so pleased that the english dub is just as stellar! Kylie McNeill’s vocals are otherworldly, I’ve never heard songs that truely feel like they’re LITERALLY touching my heart and soul… I am so excited to rewatch this film in its english dub, I don’t think I will ever get tired of this film! :)
Hi, can you please tell me where you watched this movie?
I thought Japanese voice would be more "authentic" and went to subtitle version for the theater but I regret missing watching the english version in big screen. Kyle really did amazing in English version! Whenever i go back to listening to the songs in the Belle I always coming back to Kylie's version.
I just saw yesterday and feel like all movies or stories are not the best but there are more things than being the best. It depicted it's story in rather interesting way .
I love it.

this was such a good movie. i loved the music, art and story. i recommend it to everyone. even if you dont watch anime
The song that Belle sings in this movie I was literally dancing to this song due to how good and beautiful the song is this song keeps me pumped up and motivated
I'm literally listening to all the languages I find of this (so far I've seen japanese, English, french) and they're all beautiful like wtf. They catch a feeling so well. At first I was sceptic, but this seems so amazing. I'm so excited to see the movie 👌🏾❤️
If you haven't seen this movie yet, DO IT NOW!!!! IT'S WORTH IT!!!
NYAV Post did really good work on adapting the music from what I've seen. While you can tell the CG/much more detailed mouth animation makes the dubbing over much more noticeable than with most anime dubs, I'd rather that be an issue than the song translations/performances be hindered to the film's detriment.
Omg this is torture!!! I need to watch this so badly 😢
