Well studios had enough failed practice at using cgi in the anime films that now after years of messing with it they finally perfected it. So now you'll be seeing more 3d anime films pop up. Beast stars and arcana are just the few of many more to come. Dbs is making a fully cgi film now. And if all goes well 2d animation in Japan will forever fall to 3d just like in America. Which is sad cause anime was the last stand for 2d art all these years. But it's to cheap to pass up. And at least there keeping the 2d style at least. Oh well guess it doesn't matter everything is done on the computer these days so guess it's all vanishing to a distant past.
If I heard correctly Mamoru Hosoda also worked with the Irish studio called “Cartoon Saloon” which were the creators of “Secret of Kells” “Song of the Sea” And “Wolfwalkers” in which they also used a technique of merging 2D animation with 3D animation.
I was so worried about them making an English dub for this, but Kylie McNeill is perfect for the lead role. I can't wait to see it in theaters and I'd totally be willing to buy the soundtrack.
I saw both and definitely felt the English was higher quality than most dubs. Though I do prefer the Japanese songs the English ones are faithful and enjoyable.
@@ZapDash I'd say it's the same. The singing doesn't look perfectly matched and since they did it in cgi the mouth movement has more expression to that now the way the mouth curves for different sounds is more obvious if you pay attention to the English dub and watch the mouth. But lol guess as someone who can do animation I notice weird things like that and stiff movement in some areas with the cgi but not sure if that was intentional to replicate a sort of video game vibe.
@@Aaron_Heininger I have indeed only seen horrible dubs, lol. I watch in Japanese 99% of the time. And I agree with your comments about the 3D mouth details and singing generally. I actually did CS animation in my undergrad, and notice good vs bad CGI like that often too. My comments were only directed to the quality of the delivery, not the lip-flap matching. That part was kinda jarring even. But I always like seeing how they have been improving CGI anime, and love films like this where the visuals are all sorts of crazy styles jammed together. I especially liked the Castle visuals. Though the VR world did feel a tad derivative from Summer Wars.
It's even more incredible when you realize Kylie hasn't had any other roles or singing experience besides this. And she still sounds absolutely amazing, and her voice is incredibly similar to the Japanese Voice actor. Belle's soundtrack is now out on spotify too.
At first I thought Kaho Nakamura rerecorded her vocals in English. But no, it’s all Kylie McNeill. Her voice and performance is a 1:1 match. This was the hardest role in English dub history and she made it look easy.
I'm not sure I'd call it the hardest role, but I certainly think that Kylie was a perfect match. Her speaking and singing remind me of a combination of Paige O'Hara (Belle in "Beauty and the Beast"--1991) and Celine Dion. I see her having an amazing career.
It's not just the talented cast they found with Kylie McNeill to act and sing so magically and so close to Kaho Nakamura's Suzu, but the lyrics adaptation is also so close to the Japanese. I am REALLY impressed. This movie puts Disney's latest flicks to shame.
And unlike Disney it will ACTUALLY be in theaters, not first to streaming service.(straight to streaming in my opinion is as bad as a direct-to-video releases they did back in the 90s.)
So I’m not going to lie, I saw this movie 3 times already, once in Japanese and twice in English and I’m about to see it again in Japanese tomorrow and English later. I mean I did watch it with different people but my God.. this movie blows me away every single tome
I can honestly see something very similar to U being real in around the mid 2030s like this would be something that would make VR goggles and glasses completely out of date. Instead you just plop on some regular looking headphones or earbuds and your in a completely different reality along with having the feeling like you are actually physically there.
there were some discussions about this online awhile back for something like this to be possible irl it would take a lot more technological and biological advancement there would need to be a server strong enough to keep all of this and we also would need a lot more advancement in how our brain and everything works in order to be able to connect theoretically speaking there's also a lot of dangers with the idea of actually feeling like you're in a different world over such technology, after all both your brain and your body would kinda need to be tricked into believing it even partly
I had major goosebumps when this played in theaters. it really captures the feeling of going into a virtual world. Reminds me of when I first got my Quest 2. I really love the shift in art style here. It is mesmerizing. This also seems to highlight that Suzu's inability to sing is psychological since she can in the world of U, but not in real life due what happened.
Fun fact: Belle’s design was created by Jin Kim, who’s done character design work for Disney on projects like Tangled, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Moana, and Encanto. One of his biggest influences? Animator Glen Keane, responsible for leading the animation teams that brought Ariel, Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, and Rapunzel to life. ❤️
I never saw the Japanese version of this movie, and I really want to see this. Emotional, musical, gorgeous art style (which is saying a lot for an anime). I’m very excited to see this. Maybe not in theaters in fear of covid, unfortunately, so I hope to see if from the comfort of my own home ASAP.
The concept of social media meeting virtual reality is so fascinating. I wouldn’t be surprised if the technology for something like U emerged sometime in the next twenty years or so.
Just saw it last night was magical. My friends and I were entranced. And we all couldn’t help but break into songs from the movie just stuck in our heads and our hearts
