- Dale Jr. spends quality time with the last great independent, Dave Marcis, and hears tales from his trip to Australia, why he wears his signature Goodyear hat and wingtip shoes.
I just love Dave Marcus! The epitome of an “Old School “ racer! Thanks Junior.........
Agreed, Dave is The Man
Dave is and always will be a class act!!
Dave Marcus is the man when it comes to loyalty. To bad people today don't get or understand what loyalty is all about.
Not only that, nowadays you get laughed at, for being Loyal.
Awesome show Dale love your show Dave Marcus car no 71 is a great number I rooted for a champ here in VT Bobby Dragon that was also his number good job love your show 💕🏁💕
@@crazykellywfo4240 sad but true
Dale jr could learn from Dave about loyalty, should have stayed with his dad's team
@@robertdahse4569 the biggest reason why junior left his dad's team is because of his stepmom running the team down to the ground. His stepmom has always been a dictator and they've never seen eye-to-eye even to this very day
Dave Marcis...deserves massive respect...
I have the most respect for Dave Marcis! What a man!
Dave Marcis should be in the HOF!
100%
Totally agree and Smokey Yunick
1000% agree. He has been an outstanding ambassador for the sport for 50+ years, was always there qualifying every week as a competitor for years, and did extensive tire testing during the week for Goodyear that benefitted ALL drivers.
If Randy LaJoie is a “Top 75 NASCAR Driver”😂😂😂, Dave Marcus should be that and a lot more.
Dave Marcis is a true testament to sheer grit and determination in auto racing. A real gentleman and honest and lotal to a T. He always did it his own way and had some success over the years all on a shoestring budget. He might not have won a lot but he was always able to hang right in there with the best of the best and you really have to be doing something right to be able to compete at the highest level of NASCAR or any sport for that matter for as long as Dave Marcis did. We could sure use a hell of a lot more men like Dave Marcis in the world today.
Thanks Junior for putting Dave Marcis on Dirty Mo, he is one cool dude !!!
Love these old dudes.
I was a lowly helper/ machinist on a team back in the mid 80s.
Met King Richard, Gant, Baker and a few others, those men had honor, respected a nobody like me and were generally all a class act.
Thx Dale for your channel and one trip after another down memory lane.
Pure awesome
I can still hear that WI youper accent in Dave’s voice. Made me smile, I spent a lot of my youth in Wausau, WI area. Thank you Jr. and crew at Dirty Mo for putting him on the show.
Dave Marcus is a class act!
Dave Marcis is a legend !!!
I've read through the comments and noted how many have referred to how humble Dave is...hard work will do that to a man.
If you go by talent, not success, but talent. This man is arguably one of the most talented drivers to ever set foot in a cup car. What he could do in very underfunded rides was truly unbelievable.
Thank you! I grew up in Wisconsin watching Dave Marcis and Dick Trickle race on short tracks. And later Alan Kulwicki and Matt Kenseth. Such a rich racing history up here.
The greatest asphalt short track era ever, from the 70's to 80's.
Wow...memories. As a friend of Jim Fiedler, Logansport,IN(the valve and suspension spring "guru" of the era), I love these stories. Jim and I spent hours with drivers like Dave Marcus, Terry Labonte, Richard Petty and Dale Sr. Remember sitting in the hauler with Dale and Richard Childress at Daytona. Team owner(I don't remember who) walked me through the gate with no credentials!!! Miss Jim!
I remember 1972 Nashville Fairgrounds (World's fastest 5/8 mile track? Super steep banking).
Dave Marcis was the only person that was able to run from the bottom to the top of turn one... in his Wingtip Shoes! Nobody else could make it to the top... even younger guys in their gym/running shoes could not make the "Super-steep incline! Dave Really impressed me that day!
I respect Marcis an awful lot because he was one of those guys that made what he had work. You didn't hear about him every week but he was definitely someone to admire. Underrated legend for sure
Old school DRIVER.
Love the way that Dale Jr, Mike and all the others respect and care about what these older drivers say and love the history of Nascar. Dale Jr. can't hide is admiration. Good interview.
See folks massive expansion and boat loads of money being injected into a sport doesn't always equal success. NASCAR has lost guys like Dave Marcis in its quest for mega expansion. Guys like Marcis are what made NASCAR interesting.
Kyle Busch is right expect to lose money being an owner for a long time.
Lake Speed, Dick Trickle....many good guys
Could not agree more - when they decided to go to Japan , close North Wilksboro , built seats in the "blanket " area at Bristol, built tracks in Chicago,
Las Vegas , california , texas , homestead - now Kentucky - when they built ky they closed the Louisville Motor Speedway - because of a stupid rule...
Dave Marcis was one of the hardest working drivers out there. Running his own team, putting his own cars together and buying parts. As smart as he is, he could of won a championship or two if he ran on a big race team he was more than talented enough.
Have always admired Marcis, and I think of "Wingtips" every time I hear the name. A true racer.
Mr.Dave as I knew him as a kid my dad knew him personally actually my dad built him a motor for one his show cars in late 80s thanks Dale for bringing back so many memories of my dad and Mr. Dave
A TRUE HERO NEED MORE LIKE HIM
Man, I know this is old but I've found myself coming back to it once in a while. I'm a Wisconsinite (not old enough to have seen Marcis race, lol) and he has The Wisconsin Grandpa Accent. Listening to this legit sounds like Christmas at my grandma's house. People I've never heard of, places I've never been, and that accent. Most of the folks in my family that had that accent are long gone. I know this is kind of a weird comment but I got more out of this than just the interview.
I hear that accent less and less, it really is a shame. that accent just screams central Wisconsin. Reminds me of summers up north in Juneau and Adams county.
@@TheMW2informer Whoa, someone actually read that! My family is all southern/southwestern Wisconsin and my grandma's native language is Norwegian, I'm not sure how they got it haha. I think it gets stronger the further you get from Madison/MKE. My siblings and I grew up in Dane County and we sound completely different than our relatives in Lafayette County.
It's sad that the days of the Dave Marcus type drivers are gone.
Dave Marcus is a truly small team driver/owner who made a living in the top series and was humble about it the whole time as well as being loyal to Goodyear even when he knew they were the lesser tire!......
Always loved Dave Marcis. I supported underdogs like him and J.D. McDuffie for years.
I pull for wood brothers and rcr more since jr left racing. Wood bros being from va I have to support
Wow, NASCAR will never have another guy like that. It’s just gotten too expensive.
As a fellow Wisconsinite, Thank You for having Dave on. Always interesting to hear the underdog story. Alan Kulwicki was another one.
A guy from my town, Sparta, Wi, named Larry Baumel raced NASCAR during '69 '70 and '71. The guy lived a half a block away from me and ran hobby stock in West Salem, but I didn't know about his NASCAR stint until recently. Those independents only had so much to work with. Guys like Dave and Larry were way better than their records might show.
gonna be a long time for more legends to hear their cool stories in the car sport world 🤷👍
Man o man.. Dave Marcis is so awesome!
The old guys have the best stories. They raced in a different world.
I don’t think you could be picking any better guests then you have been lately. Keep em comin 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Dave is a great person. Visit his bar/restaurant in Rib Lake, WI. NASCAR picture museum in the north country. Food is great too!
Bar’s name is Camp 28.
I honestly dont know how this podcast can get any better. The guests and the questions and stories are just amazing. I love it. Keep up the great work.
Great interview. I saw him at a truck stop one night, he was riding back from a race in the car hauler. He’s a class act.
Proud of "my" WI drivers, Dave Marcis, Dick Trickle, Alan Kulwicki, Matt Kenseth, ect...
Truly a great guy. A hero of all us underdogs!
Dave briefly touched on the Goodyear sponsorship covering the entire quarter panel of his Dodge Charger...I remember seeing that car in Greenville in, gosh I think it was 1968, and it was baby blue with the #30 in bright yellow. The next year, he drove a winged Daytona, also baby blue in color, numbered 30 but with Dodge on the quarters...
I was a youngster, but I remember those cars specifically because they stood out from the others in visibility. And damn, he was fast back then....
He might be the last independent owner/engine builder/driver that NASCAR ever has, and he’s one hell of a nice guy.
I actually have that car. University of Racing makes a pretty sweet Daytona Diecast of that :D
I just love to hear the old timers telling stories
I love how Jr. lets all the old school drivers come on his show
"We have done so much, with so little, for so long, we can do anything with almost nothing." I have lived by those words. Always rooted for Dave, Buddy Arrington, Alan Kulwicki, James Hylton, Cecil "Flash", JD McDuffie and the rest of the independents (along with, of course, The King). More of the these old school racer interviews, please, please, please.
I understand the loyalty. I still wear my sponsor's hat (Big G Automotive, a small, two bay garage in a small town in the middle of nowhere) from my racing days; the last race I ran was in 2003. And I have been a diehard fan of the 43 (and by extension, John Andretti, Bobby Hamilton, Wally Dallenbach, Aric Almirola, Bubba, et al) since 1970.
Where you from
Dave Marcus will always be the unspoken hero of NASCAR, sadly. The man just would show up to a race track, he always knew who his friends were and just raced! He was about as independent as they come, but his loyalty to Goodyear and to certain race teams got him lots of respect and help. But the man had integrity and that's what makes Dave Marcus a great man!
I have a great banner of Dave Marcus that I had made for the 88 Daytona 500. Because of health issues l didn't make the race, but l still have the banner. I had a lady that worked for a company that made these for souvenirs. It's been inside storage all these years. It's great looking showing Dave sitting in his car and his famous wingtips at the bottom of drivers side door.
Bless Dave Marcus.
What a great part of our racing history.
I had his pictures on my walls of my room growing up right beside Dale, Rusty, Davey, Alan, Bill and others.
Thks dale for sharing your pod cast and allowing your guest to express themselves unfiltered.
Dale Jr. Thank you for this podcast I'm a long time race fan and I've learned more in the last month about the behind the scenes than in the last 30 years. Thanks 👍
So fresh to see Dave Marcis up and around and looking good and healthy. We love and miss you Dave. Keep those wingtips on and racing. This is one of my heros right there. He and Dale see such great friends and Dave is such a nice guy too. First to earth, just a great guy all the way around. And a hell of a race car driver to!
Absolutely love Dave Marcis. I always pulled for him when he was on track.
I bought a 1987 Aero coupe from one of the sponsors of Dave Marcus, this Aero coupe was all stickered up as a track car and used as a advertisement for the sponsor. When came time to bid on this car,( I'm four states away) I actually convinced the seller to save me that car, (even though he had buyers standing right in his face with the cash) The seller, a friend of Dave's wanted me to have this car because I was the only buyer that knew about Dave Marcus and his history of wingtip shoes. What a wonderful humble man Dave Marcus always was/is. God bless him.
I know that this is 3 years old but i have to say that Dave Marcus is one of the greatest guys to talk to. I got to meet him at Robert Pressleys Hot Dog Place (Celebrity Hot Dog) the other day and he still has his since of humor.....for i asked him had anyone told him lately that he looked like Dave Marcus....his answer was every now and then smiling and wearing that GoodYear hat...great guy indeed....took me back to 1990 when i first met him!!!!😎😎
About 20 yrs ago I met Dave Marcus in Necedah,Wisconsin during the deer hunting season and he was wearing the Goodyear hat,a true gentleman
I hunt in Necedah as well(hwy 80 & 32nd st) , it’s the hometown of the Sauters that are in nascar too.
@@TheMW2informer my children are the same age as some of the Sauters, they use to play together when they were younger
Dave Marcus one of the legends of NASCAR!! Thank you sir!!
I don't know who made the call to have Dave Marcis on the show, but it is by far, the best call the program has made.
Dave represented so many during an era that crested two *very* different generations of NASCAR drivers, owners and fans. Buddy Arrington was another icon during Marcis' thick and thin seasons.
Thanks so much for having him on the show. Dave Marcis *is* NASCAR Goodyear.
End of discussion. The company should pay him for life. (rumor has it, Leo attempted to do just that, but was denied by the President of the company during the Hoosier Tire war.
Dave Marcis is an American legend.
Dave Marcis is a real likable guy. I like him. I wish he could still race today.
1985 Spring raced at Dover. After the race down the highway a ways ended up to the left of a 6 wheel dark blue chevrolet cargo van with Dave Marcis's race car on an open trailer.
I remember having a short conversation across the car asking Dave who was driving the van home (I think by himself) what happened for him to fall behind (finished 9th).
Nice guy, needed people like him to keep the sport going.
Bill Elliott won by 1 lap over Harry Gant. Geoff Bodine lost an Alternator,. Watched Harry Hyde crew replace the battery (our seats near start finish line) finished 11th.
Great respect for Dave Marcis
Dave is at the top of my list for most respected in my book.
If loyalty got a driver in to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Dave would have been a first year inductee!
Old. School. Racer. 👍
I second that!
I love the old drivers you should try to have more of them on Good show like allways
I'm not a politician, I believe in doing what's right! Classic
Miss all the timers that built this sport. Dave is all class ! Great interview Jr.
Wow that loyalty to goodyear! He is what you call a cowboy! Do it cause it's right! I never knew much of Dave marcis other than he was the old guy still racing.
On another note I still think Jr needs to get Kyle on his download and he needs to have coffee with kyle!
Mr Marcis...
The Last True Gentleman Racer 👊!
Love dave Marcus. A true racer
What an icon of the sport!!
Men like Dave Marcus Maye NASCAR worth watching always support the little guy. Was that a race many years ago Joe Nemechek qualified solidly for the race 32. Green flag come out he ran 34 laps pitted. Because he didn't have the tires to run the entire race. To Corus dropped out he come back out and ran just the right amount of laps to get those two positions and put it again. That would be horrible to go to a race to qualify for a race and know that you really can't race
Great folks and a super show!🇺🇸
Dave was my favorite for the years I really followed NASCAR in the 1990s. I always said Marcis was my overall favorite and Earnhardt was my favorite to have a chance to win. By far my two favorites. I got to meet and spend 20 or so minutes with him after he got knocked out of a race at Darlington. Great memory. Got a cap from his crew guy which I still have. Still have a VHS tape of his last top 10 in NASCAR - a race in the mid 90s at North Wilkesboro.
Totally cool interview with one of the nicest, hardworking guys that made Nascar!
Dave Marcis...LEGEND!
Damn Dave's gotten old but man what freaking raw talent. Put him in anything and he can get to the front.
I'm not a politician. I like to do what's right. Great quote.
How awesome to see the great Dave Marcis on your podcast!! These shows with the legends are always my favorites!!
Thank you, Mr. Marcis.
I really like Dave, he's always a Gentleman
I like Dave .I enjoyed this video and the storys
Legend. This makes me think of the old days great name and man.
Dave Marcis is the type of racer that used to be the norm. There were a lot of independents. We will likely not see their type again.
Jr. does his homework. Asks great questions to get the best stories.
Great interview...good old boy and good old racing ! Cool guy, I'm glad he's still around...and glad I've lived long enough to be around racing sense the 50s...! Thanks Dale, I sure enjoy your channel..keep it up man ! Good job !
This is outstanding
Love this! Thanks for making NASCAR relevant! Great insight!
Thanks Dale, been a Dave Marcus fan since the big apple Market days
Have heard story's about Dale Sr helping Dave Marcus with racing!....Dale liked Dave Marcus so he would give his team car parts and tires!....And Benny Parsons confirmed before he passed!...Love the loyalty between these old school cup drivers!
Many people don't know that Dave served in the Army. He and my father served in the reserves together.
I remember one race, can't remember the year or track but it was televised. Goodyear had problems with the tire wearing out and NASCAR was going down pit road confiscating tires from teams that were out of the race. They came to get Dave's tires and he told them that if anyone was going to get his tires it was Earnhardt because he had helped him make that race.
Wonder what TSA would do today if you brought 2 sacks of sandwiches through security. LoL
The NASCAR HOF needs a special wing for Wisconsin guys who did things the hard way. Dave Marcis, Dick Trickle, Alan Kulwicki, Matt Kenseth, and so forth.
I'm an IndyCar fan as well as a fan of Junior's & all of the Hendricks' guys. There was a driver/owner back in the 1980's names Dick Simon. He and Dave Marcus could have been brothers in the fact that they both were independent, loyal and true class gentleman. The likes of which we'll never see again.
One helluva of a wheelman
Great episode
In keeping with the old timers, I'd love to see an interview with Morgan Sheperd. He's still active in Nascar this year.
I met Dave in a BBQ place in my hometown of Macon Ga. Back in 2008. Very nice guy.
Dave Marcis is my HERO
Dave Marcis was one of Wisconsin's best..... What a guy!!! Is ol' Handsome Harry Gant still around??? I'd like to hear some of his stories too.
Harry Gant is our guest next week!
@@DirtyMoMedia And I bet he's still building houses or barns or something
Remember watching that Aussie Nascar race on TV here in the UK, Calder Park Thunderdome way back in 1988
dave is great im still a fan
Love these. So many people that I’d like you to have on..... #1 Schroeder!
