As many of you may or may not know I used to own a 2002 BMW M3. It taught me many things, chief among which that the BMW life is stupendously expensive and riddled with headaches. That is the primary reason I sold mine in favor of starting my Lexus project. While shopping around for parts I came to one conclusion, my 2002 Lexus IS300 is a much better PROJECT CAR than the M3.

The IS300 is the most underrated car platform period. IS300 > E46.
It's a giant killer modded and it looks damn good. Drives really damn good too I love my IS300 5 speed manual. I agree with you 100 percent bro great fucking video !!! Love the back story you gave about the IS300.

I bought my new IS 300 in 2001. Saw that cool looking car at the Washington International Auto Show -- it is now over 295,000 miles and still running like a champ. Gave it a tune-up yesterday -- took me an hour to get to the spark plugs/coils/wires/gasket, etc. I have to say the 2JZ engine is smooth as silk! Great driving car with nimble handling and an incredibly smooth engine and transmission. A great car for those who appreciate good handling and fun driving.
I fell in live with the Alteeza when I was stationed in Japan in 00. The stuff they did with them was crazy. Ive always wanted one since and bought a salvaged one for $2500 last year, just had to paint it. Only problem I've had was I replaced the entire cooling system which is simple and now I'm getting ready for a GTE swap. The 4 door is nice too so my kids can come out and play. Love this car!

No, the XE10 chassis (Altezza, is200 and is300) comes with 3 engines:
2JZ-GE (3 liter i6)
1G-FE (2 liter *petrol* i6)
3S-GE (2 liter *petrol* i4)

Great vid! I own a '02 Is300 myself, and installed a 28" light bar behind the bumper grill. You can't really see it in the day or when it is off, but in those dark back-roads, it looks like it is day time! Purchase and install costed me less than $200. It's not a performance upgrade, but it would make a great video if you were to do it! :)

Dude, I feel it. bmw/mini aftermarket parts are insane. I remember how jealous I was when I saw prices for Japanese car parts. You’ve won me over on this car with this video, can’t wait to see the three cars finished up and compared! Hope you guys have some plans for a comparison finale, like renting an air strip or track!

Love this car so much that I bought another, affordable and reliable. Even a 16 year old who just started working can afford this. 100% recommendation as a first car. Doesn’t even looks like the car ages one bit.
They did launch different variances for IS300 2002+ they had the L-tuned edition IS300 with upgraded suspension and 18" Rays Compionatos, l-tuned bumper, sideskirts and rear lip, I believe with that the "F" was born for the 2nd generation of IS. in 2003 + they launched the Sport Design edition which involves no performance upgrades but only aesthetics, it's the forefather of "F Sport". I'm currently still original owner of my 2004 Lexus IS300 Sport Design

I recently acquired a 2jzgte swapped IS300 with the R154 tranny... boy is it fun. I’m sitting at 430 WHP and the only thing keeping me from getting into the 500+ range is the fuel pump. It’s a fun little car and I get compliments constantly. Never was a BMW fan

Nice!!! Keep in mind these cars require a standalone/piggyback to make any significant power. Plus the W55 manual gearbox is only good for 300ish.

Just sold my SportDesign 5MT with LSD for super cheap. Totally regret it. Equipped with SSR wheels and Koni Eibachs. Drove perfect and was only at 200K.

However, how are you planning to do a NA build for a reasonable budget to rival an E46 M3? That's a pretty lofty goal to do on a reasonable budget. I do know that you can get up to near 300 rwhp on a 2JZ-GE but it costs a lot more than doing it with a 2JZ-GTE or 2JZ-GE(T). Best wishes to you bud!

Nice. I kicked around the idea of a 1JZ swap. Eventually, I decided on a path that gets me the fun factor on the street. Enough power to be noticed but not overpower the road. And things like response and sound and uniqueness played as well.

100%. If you can find a clean one with a good service history it is absolutely worth it. Super fun to drive and very little issues outside of the norm to worry about.

If ur watching bck bro .wrong the altezza came with a w.2.0 3sge r 3sgte .3sge 200hp 3sgte 210hp its a inline 4 not six.. but it can hold the same 3.0 ge 3gte .its the same cars .
On my 2nd IS, it's a great daily. Well built, functional, fun.

The problem with the IS, is the fact that they are so slow. Coming from someone who has owned 5 IS300's (one of them NA-T, one of them 5 speed) and it cost a lot of money to boost it. Which is the only way to make any real power. I'm not a track guy or anything. But it's a picky car.
Edit: You kind of address it later in the video. You say it's cheap to do those swaps.. but it's certainly not.

It took me a year to get my is300 and the one I got is literally a time capsule from 2001 it's a Canadian version which has the automated headlight sprayers/cleaners and altezza wing with only 80,000 kms it's 17 years old but looks like it's right off the showroom floor
There was a performance variant for the is300. It was nothing extraordinary but they had better performance.
Firstly you can option a manual transmission and an LSD from Lexus. This helps in accelerating and 0-60.
Then they had the is300 L-tuned.... this was the performance version with stiffer bushing and lowered racer suspension..

Unfortunately word is getting out how good and cheep IS-300's are. Prices are starting to climb. I paid 5,300 for my 03 with a few aftermarket goodies, super clean inside and out and 195,xxx miles. That was 2 years ago and I don't think I could find one as good as mine now for that price.

i went through a serious break up with my e46... ended up dating an is300 and damn shes so nice to me! almost 180k and still never had any problems. do yourself a favor and get one if you want a great reliable project/ girlfriend.
I had a e46 325ci with 60k miles. Showroom condition. First the spark plugs went. Ok no biggie. Then the front caliper went. Then the starter went $600 for the part alone. Then the car left me stranded at an intersection. Fuel pump. All within 2 years. Oh and the water pump started to leak to. Done like dinner after that. Got rid of it and bought an Evo X. Never looked back.
My dad just bought a super clean 2002 IS300 with 110k miles. Car drives like new. Awesome car. I told him I'm buying it if he ever decides to sell it.
I felt that on a never level. You have to respect the European IL 6 but that is300 is just amazing. Mine still feels like I got it off the lot lol
I have a is300 and a Acura integra gsr. Toyota should have don’t what Honda did to the integra. Have a regular model and a sporty model with a more powerful engine.

Please understand that to anyone seeking to buy an is300 and make power, it is most certainly not cheap. Bolt ons do nothing and boost will set you back at least 4k if you do all the work yourself, aiming for 300-400 hp. Anything more (especially with the manual) and you have to start replacing things.

Me and my buddy just picked up a 2002 is300 for 1800 with 18000mi in good condition and the only thing that needed replaced was the water pump and t-belt and let me tell you holy shit the crank bolt is really tight

There is an L-tuned version if you didn't know. Mostly cosmetic and handling upgrades though.

Have an 02 5 speed and no, they aren’t fast by any means but plenty of power to have fun and great handling along with timeless styling. I wouldn’t trade my IS for anything.

Swap a V8 into the IS300 from the SC400 (The car the Supra was based on also made by Nobuaki Katayama). BAM, you got a lighter car with better weight distribution and 300HP.
Only comes in auto though 🙄

Bought Rev9 coilover with 32 damp setting and its also ride height adjustable can be had on Ebay for $500. Installed a set on 2 model years 2001 & 2003 and both drive very well now I can take corners like a go kart am very pleased.
Pro Tip. Speed up this video by 1.25x to make it more bearable to watch. This guy speaks too slow for my attention span.

1:20 It’s not an in-line 6 in Altezza, it’s an in-line 4, it’s 3SGE, and it’s gasoline engine, not diesel.

Dominik Jesenič Agree but that’s Lexus IS200 with an I6, Toyota Altezza is almost identical to IS200 apart from engine as they have I4.
In japan you can choose between an altezza AS200 with the 2 litre beams 1G-FE and an altezza RS200 with the 2 litre Beams yamaha 3sge. Both has an automatic or 6 speed gearbox. The AS200 is almost identical to the lexus is200.
In Japan they got The 2L 4 cyl and The 3L 2JZ. In europe they got The is200 with 2L 6 cyl.
As an is owner I love it 10x over a BMW but they are more expensive to make power in over an e46 or e36, management for a na-t setup is easy 2500$ a 1j swap is 1500 motor only plus swap parts your at 3-5k 2j gte your another 1k on top of that and your still stock ecu. But I still love mine

The lexus is200 comes with the straight 6. And the Toyota altezza comes with the beams engine. Not the other way around. Also very rare to get is the altezza beams 6 cylinder but it's lazy compared the the 4 cylinder

The only reason they got the 3 litre 6 was the current bmw out gunned the 2 litre version.

I’ve owned both. When both are working obviously the M3 is the better drivers car. However, the M3 is a money pit when things start to go wrong. Just ask BMW ppl about Vanos and watch them get an angry twitch in their eye.
