- Welcome to Break an Egg, the series where our Senior Food Stylist, Anna Billingskog, cooks up a winning breakfast recipe. She’ll tackle cookbook hits, favorites from Food52 community members, and originals from our Test Kitchen. Follow along for breakfast (and breakfast for dinner) inspo. In this episode, we have a guest host - Founder of Food52 Amanda Hesser filling in as host and joined by the owner of Poppy's in Brooklyn, Jamie Erickson!
"My grandfather, whom I called Poppy, was a counterman at the famed B&H Dairy in the East Village for 40 years! By the 1980’s and during my early childhood on the Lower East Side, he went to the Grand Street Dairy and there became coined King of the Matzo Brei. For the 10 years of my childhood that my Poppy was alive for, I can remember the smell of matzo brei frying and loved eating it with a pile of sugar on my plate to dip it into. I started my business 12 years ago and decided dedicate it to him by calling the company Poppy’s. While I’m not the chef of my business, I love cooking at home and on this Passover I figured we could share this recipe for anyone to make." -Jamie Erickson

Please show the draining of the water from the matzo before adding the eggs, the way this is edited, some people may add eggs to water soup before they realize their mistake
Yup you have to get rid of the water. My mother soaked over the faucet with warm water and the broke up the matzo into the bowl. Salt and pepper and scrambled. I love the jam too!
About a week too late but will try it next year.
I am a simple man. I see matzo brei - i click "like".
Yay! This ep was a good stand-in for Amanda Messes Up in the Kitchen.
Start at 8:57
Alison Roman has a great vid on matzo brei
Don't be afraid to flip that badboy :)
2:52 she wanted more salt haha
I love no nonsense women. you two are great. also, is that June's husband? I miss June.
I don't soak the matzoh. I want it to soak up egg not water
The matzo is able to soak up more egg if it porous. Matzo Brie should not be hard.
Fun video and definitely made me want to try it.
As an aside, please start adding music back into your production. I'm not sure when or why it was taken out, but it definitely added a more polished quality.
A lovely fail. Thank you for that.
How would anyone think 4 tbsp of oil would work? Rookie mistake. But this is weird anyway. Half of my Dad's family were Ashkenazi, the other half Sephardic. We never ate this when I was a kid.
The guest doesnt seem like she wants to be there and the host is just a bit awkward and doesnt seem like she knows how to cook lol
I made this for breakfast yesterday. I use butter, not oil. Also, their matzoh pieces are way to big. You break them up into like inch square pieces. I think they broke them up more off camera. Oh, and NO sugar or jelly...that's just wrong...lol
We ALWAYS had jam with ours when I was growing up, eons ago! Probably strawberry!
Omgosh.. these 2 are such " yentas" stop talking and get to more with recipe.
😅 totally agree
Being a yenta is part of the culture. If it bothers you, seek out some ‘white bread’ dishes!!!!
This gave me agita to watch.
This is uncomfortable to watch ... please pay talent to be entertaining ... because these ladies aren't it.
