Brian Fletcher the greatest National jockey of them all. Don’t forget he would have won 3 Nationals on Red Rum if he hadn’t got disgracefully jocked off , 4 in all and don’t forget the fences were much more difficult in those days.
Thats a big shout about Fletcher. McCain thought the partnership had run its course and overall you would have to say he was proved just about correct. The irony was had Stack kicked for home earlier in the 76 race he probably would have won
How many people have listened to the Commentator say that a horse has fallen when actually the jockey just fell off!! The horses' Body never touched the ground.!!

@@gazowen7310 Hello sir, May I say you are not entirely correct. Brian was second on Red Rum in 1975 beaten by his old rival Lescargot. In 1976 Brian was third on Eyecatcher beaten by Rag Trade and Red Rum ' Tommy Stack on board. In 1975 Brian rode Eyecatcher in Topham Trophy but he fell when going well at the second last. Our Greenwood won with Tommy Carberry on board. Sadly Brian at to retire early 1977 due to head injuries and is no longer with us RIP. Tiger Bay is going for his third win in a row this year ,but the race cannot be compared to when Rummy won 3. Great spectacle ruined sadly. Just a normal race now.😥

Foinavon was going well until brought down at the water of all jumps. Never seen anything fall there before. Smaller and safer fences are making this race as dangerous as ever. The jockeys just go faster and run more risks. It should never have been changed.

A nine year old when he won this at 100/7. Trained by the great Denys Smith and ridden by teenager Brian Fletcher ( he would win it twice more in 73/74 aboard Red Rum) Red Alligator was just an average chaser. Carrying only 10 stone ( 63.63 kilograms) Red Alligator was probably unlucky in the 67 national that Foinavon won. Caught up in the melee that gifted Foinavon the spoils, he had to have three attempts to get over and try to play catch up. Rattling into third that year, many latched onto him for the 68 event and he duly obliged. In 69 he started off as favorite but ran no sort of race, falling at the 19th. Deny Smith believed he had been got at in the stabling overnight and drugged. That was never proven but considering he was a consistent sort who invariably gave his all, the nobbling claim has some credence
Underated horse, should have won the previous years too.....ended up in the slaughter house I believe. I s that realy befitting a great horse like this?
My first ever bet. One shilling on Red Alligator. I bet Highland Wedding the following year too; as a 6 year old. The National was the highlight of the year for me as a boy.
