The Pilgarlic and Greasepaint were two unlucky stayers, both horses were solid bets in the National. I think both were placed in four Nationals each in the late seventies and early eighties. Lovely memories of two great horses in their own right.

Will always remember the 1985 National . Was watching it with my brother , who stood to win about £300 pounds through multiple bets , he 'd backed Mr Snugfit , and I had put 50 pence on Last Suspect . I can see him standing up as Mr Snugfit jumped the last ; we were both shouting , " come on , come on ! " then my horse , which looked to be in a hopeless position , suddenly sprouted wings and won at 50-1
I would have preferred my brother to have won . I felt guilty, when I went to pick up my £25 . C'est la vie .

Great memories, I went into the bookies that morning, noticed a newspaper article on the wall which listed what they thought the actual odds should be (not who would win) Last Suspect was listed at 18 to 1, as the price available was 66 to 1, that got my attention, so £1 each way it was (took the 66/1) what a result! I was a 17 year old apprentice (YTS earning £35 a week) the happiest of days!

@davidmcmahon5234 I think his form before race was 21P. When he won he gave Corbierre a beating. 66/1 was madness and I took it gladly. I must admit Ive never seened Last Suspect looking happy or without his ears back. Must have been one hell of a ride. I think he kept him wide of all the other horses because he hated other horses he hated people it was only at the end he got a bit closer but was always prone to pull up if he didnt want to race.
