I used your video to do an observation for an assignment to go toward my masters to teach art and I had never seen a Socratic Seminar in action. This was amazing! Thank you for sharing this! It was very engaging and I hope to be able to make lessons as amazing and motivating as this was! Great work!
I watched your video as part of my observation hours towards my certification. You are the type of ELAR teacher that I want to be and also wished I would have had when I was in school. What a fabulous, well-defined class!!
Thank you! 😃I don't have the lesson plan with my annotations for it anymore, but it was an Activity from the SpringBoard ELA Curriculum. 8th grade Unit 2, The Challenge of Utopia. One of my absolute favorite units! :)
Hello. I absolutely love the transitions that you have implemented into your classroom. Can you tell me more about them? I would love to try some. Thanks in advance.
After countless decades of traveling the multiverse I have finally re discovered the Socratic seminar. Thank you ms shack and the students for this wonderful socratic seminar. Your welcome and thanks. Hope to find again next decade. xD xD
I've used SS before but it definitely wasn't so well-oiled. Your classroom management is tight and your focusing strategies are totally lit. Approximately how many times had this class done Socratic Smackdown prior to this recording?
In case you haven't found it yourself, here is the link to the material for Socratic Smackdown: katherinecadwell.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/socratic-seminar-smackdown-game.pdf. It used to be on a site called Institute of Play but it seems to be down at the moment.
Hello, Ms. Shackelford - Is it possible to get copies of the score cards, etc. from you? I'd like to see if I would use them as is or modify them... I always give credit, too! That's part of the fun - and it's great for students to see the teamwork!
I don't know if you found this already, but here is the link to see the score cards she uses. I'm currently going through this and am finding this incredibly useful. clalliance.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/SocraticSmackdown.pdf
Thank you. We had fun and although it was many years ago, students from this class (and all of my classes!) still keep in touch with me and have gone on to do wonderful things. I am so proud of them!
I know! They all are learning and it is all coming from our teachers who teach them or us. It takes a lot to become a teacher; you half to graduate high school and then go to college for three to four years and get a degree in Education....
CoopDAWG...my dawg, go ahead and look up some academic research that's been peer reviewed and read those before making such assumptions. I'll open a Socratic seminar on the topic if you so wish to join. Until then, happy reading! :)
Fantastic! Loved how you turned it into a competition. Genius.

Excellent facilitating teacher. I wish I could see your lesson plan and share your resources.

Hey thank you! I appreciate it! This was their second time doing a Socratic Seminar. They rocked it.
I would love to look at some of these student handouts up close. Are these available? Perhaps on teachers pay teachers?

Thank you for that time stamp!!!! Much appreciated.
Nice lesson. However, easy when you have what, 15-18 students? Try it with 38-42
you must be a fun teacher
We live in a society
Yes. Yes we do.
I wanna act and be like the Fanning girls.
Go for it!
You look different, but this is a great video! :D
Thank you! I am very proud of them!!!

Like, what if they wanted to become a doctor?
Ms Shacklefart 💀
OMG SO FUNNY VinSCENT!
Seminar is worthless and you’re playing yourself if you think it has the slightest value
