I like him as a good guy so far, kinda sad to watch him tip over the edge. Its going to be awesome though. My bet is at the end of this season or start of the next season
The Riddler is another darker reflection of Batman: Both are intelligent geniuses, but Riddler leaves clues whilst Batman solves them. He is what Batman could have become if he let his genius go all over his head.
Riddle me this: When he passes by you lose your hair. Well when you're in France even your head. He's the only one that certainly will drop you dead. His name ain't Tedd. He watches you and moves with every breath you make. He passes by and watches you to blow a cake. Whether you solve this or not I wouldn't give a dime. The answer to this riddle of course is.........
The problem with many portrayals of the Riddler is that the writers aren't as smart as they want the character to be. They can't layout a puzzle and think riddles are the things gradeschool children tell as jokes. If the Riddler is to be written well, his plans would span years of comic book issues, left unsolved and not connected with him easily because the have multiple wrong possibilities as they are only pieces to solve... like putting a puzzle together. The solution should be so well written that once you read it, you get it, but only in 20/20 and not with the need for inside knowledge like "Mcguffin Square is holding the Hitchcock dance in the Spade building of Maltese and Falcon, so it must be the answer is Bob the janitor (who nobody mentioned until now)". Now for my riddle: "In marble walls as white as milk, within a lining as soft as silk, sitting in a fountain crystal clear a golden apple doth appear. No doors there are to this stronghold, yet thieves break in and steal the gold."
Connor Stickels That's the trick with a good riddle. It has to be generic so that anybody can guess, vague enough so that it can have multiple answers, but be specific in one way that it rules out all but one possibility. If it weren't for the Hobbit and Tolkien having used a version of this, I'd say people would be guessing more. And this is why the Riddler, if written well, is the most difficult villain to fight... but he's not often written as well because riddles are much more complex than jokes.
Would it be too much to ask, that at least once in my lifetime, I would see a serious Batman film, where The Riddler would be the main villain - but not like Jim Carey's overacted Riddler - but menacing and dangerous maniac who is driven to test others by leaving clues and riddles to his crimes. Who is dedicated to creating a riddle the Dark Knight won't be able to solve in time - even if he has to kill someone to do it! That's the Riddler I remember from Arkham games!
Actually the Riddler is crazy. The definition of insanity is repeating the same process and expecting different results. Even though the riddler is one of batman's more sane foes if you look at the Joker or Victor Zsasz
You're contradicting yourself. That is exactly why he is insane. Over the years, Nigma has done nothing but attempt to make the perfect crime. Once he's stopped, he'll just make another game. He's insane because he believe one of the traps would actually be elaborate enough to outwit the Bat-Man.
That's one definition of insanity, but not the definition used to determine mental health. But yes, the Riddler is insane, & is a regular inmate of the Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane.
Yeh I agree he is amazing. I don't know if you have seen the new Gotham show but they have been setting the Riddler up very closely to Arkham Riddler. it's fsntastic.
I like the backstory in "The Batman" the animated series. Similar childhood...but...he was a scientist, and became betrayed by the person he loved the most, and all he wants is revenge on the person he thought did it..but became heartbroken knowing the person he loved sabatoged his invention.
I had almost completely erased Batman Forever from my memory. Thanks for reminding me of that nightmare,WatchMojo. Jim carey was pretty good in it though, I suppose.
Chronk yep, a lot of Batman villains have names that go with their persona's, Selina Kyle, Selina rhymes with Feline (sorta) aka Catwoman, Pamela Isley aka Poison Ivy, not only does Isley sound like Ivy, but her initials stay the same, P.I. not to mention her middle name Lillian comes from Lily which is a type of flower. Another I like, and not many realize is 1960's Robin, Burt Ward... kind of a trick name there as well because Robin aka Dick Grayson is known as Bruce Wayne's ward... I am sure there are many more, but yes, Riddler's has got to be one of the best.
lol, thanks, I think I actually intentionally forgot her because I was mentioning villains, and Harley is more of a sidekick/henchwoman/antihero, depending on the story and her mood.
I think one of the main reasons I enjoy the Batman stories and universe so much is because of the villians like Riddler. Without great villians, the heroes don't get to really show how great they are.
I seriously love the one in the arkham series, especially once you collect a riddler trophy, he will always say something like "That was the easy one." or something like that.

If I was Nolan, If I had wrote the script to the third and final installment to The Dark Knight trilogy, first off I would've chose a different title such as "Gotham City" or "The Caped Crusader" and second, I would chosen The Riddler, The Penguin, Harley Quinn, and the surprise/plot twist villain being Poison Ivy. The Riddler would be a criminal mastermind with a near Genius-level IQ who becomes the most intellectually and psychologically challenging enemy yet who joins forces with The Penguin, a disfigured, greatly-feared, and highly-intelligent crime-boss who wants to seize full control of Gotham's criminal underworld and was once trained by Ra's Al Ghul at some point in his life but had betrayed Al Ghul and disappeared with Al Ghul being unable to find him. The Riddler and Penguin's alliance is threaten when not only does Batman re-emerge after nearly a decade but when a face-painted female psychopath also comes to Gotham to continue The Joker's mission into unleashing utter chaos and destruction in Gotham and wants to wipe out all the other crime families of the city so she can rule of Gotham as "The Clown Princess of Crime". The Penguin manages to manipulate Harley into joining his organization but The Riddler has plans to betray and kill Penguin later down the road but towards the climax, Riddler's plan backfires and is outsmarted by both Penguin and Batman which leads to his demise. It turns out that Penguin suspected and was well aware of Riddler's plan to betray him and was tracking down his every move! He even had men in his (Riddler's) organization the whole time! What do you think about that as an alternative third-parter to Nolan's TDK trilogy? Any opinions? Open 4 Feedback!
I hope you see this as constructive criticism! Too many "main" characters to keep up with, tie together, pit against each other, etc. I wonder how/why Oswald would get in with the League of Shadows - and how he could avoid being found but not Bruce - and how he could outsmart Edward, and for so long, and reaching so far, and without Edward knowing. (In short, The Riddler loses all dramatic power when he's not the smartest villain.) Harlene wants chaos and anarchy, but also wants to be head of organizations? I'm sorry, but this *could* work in a campy universe - just not the realistic Nolanverse. Also, adding Pamela as yet another twist? :whew: EDIT: Ah, I didn't see the four-year timespan between our comments. Anyway! Cheers. $:^ J
Robin Lord Taylor's portrayal of The Penguin in Gotham for me is the epitome origin story for Penguin and stays so true to his comic origin whilst also humbly reinventing the character and his development for the modern age, into the criminal master mind we all know and love
Who would play a better darker version of the Riddler in a Dark knight movie Leonardo DiCaprio or Johnny Depp. Instead of being a Thief the Riddler would be a cereal killer who left a riddle at every one of his crime scenes. That left a riddle on were or who his next kill would be.

I think jim carrey would have been better as joker not riddler. Riddler is just a cry baby who believe himself as superior while denying the fact that he always cheats to win.
I think a different origin explains The Riddler's actions more clearly. You see, his father was abusive and beat Edward if he ever told a lie. This compelled him to instinctively tell the truth. Therefore, riddles have a single correct answer which he's attracted to.
I think Riddler would have been perfect in the Nolanverse
Am I crazy or did the Dark Knight Rises (I want to say the Dark Knight) end with the Bat signal being changed to a question mark? I swear I saw it.

+Jose Nunes silence that's what you are! the answer is silence.
Silence?
Yep silence XD
No kidding! Loved Riddler there! One of his finest moments ever.
He is one of my favorite Batman Villians and I love how he is on Gotham!!! OMG!!! That guy plays the hell out of that role!!! He is so good!!!
Please talk about Gotham's villains as The Penguin and The Riddler. Both are just amazing characters and actors
I think a different origin explains The Riddler's actions more clearly. You see, his father was abusive and beat Edward if he ever told a lie. This compelled him to instinctively tell the truth. Therefore, riddles have a single correct answer which he's attracted to.
the riddler definitely has the best "real name" E. Nigma...love it!
