- We had no idea what was in store for us. From insane views, epic water falls, venomous snakes, creepy campsites and Gnarly trails, this weekend would end up packed full of adventure.
This time we took on a new section of the SCAR to Lake Jocassee, Horse Pasture Rd and into the Sumter National Forest.
I’m Matt Brodie with Simply Must Go and this is Part 6 of our Overlanding South Carolina on the SCAR series.

I have really enjoyed watching the scar videos you put together. I have a Columbia guy and your videos make me want to get a jeep and do the scar . Please keep making the videos around our beautiful state . Thank you
Will do! Thank you!!
I love this video so much. Those views are gorgeous!!!!
I highly recommend picking up a couple of Exped Megamat 10’s; one for each of you. They’re pricey, but are like no other sleeping pad I’ve ever used. They’re pretty durable too.
Thanks!
Love this series man, keep it up!
Thank you so much!
Since no one else is going to say it, I’ll be that guy. Not having ANY recovery gear is not an option. For the cost of painting your top, or the solar panel, or the roof rack, you can have top notch recovery gear (unless all the items I mentioned were bartered for).
Think of it this way. You decide to not crawl over the downed tree for whatever reason, you turn around only to find a tree has fallen somewhere behind you on your way back out. It can happen.
This is a great point. I really do need one, and I don't like not having one. I also haven't figured out which front bumper I want and my factory one isn't winch compatible. So, that's also been my hold up.
@@SimplyMustGo a simple tow strap and soft shackles can aid in pulling trees out of the way. Your hooks out front can easily handle situations like downed trees. Be safe
@@Tail_Dragger Oh, I hadn't really thought of using the tow straps and the hooks. That's a good idea!
I'd start with at least a hi lift jack which can be crudely used as a hand winch, a battery chainsaw, tow straps and maybe a bucksaw.
Awesome video as always thanks for sharing
You may already know they exist but I have a Rock Hard winch plate on my Jlu that way I didn’t have to buy a steel bumper Able to mount winch on stock bumper with they plate
They make one for the jk as well
Should look at them , I love mine little over 200$ for it then have 450$ in winch and 13,000 lb model .
It’s not a warn but works well
Nice! Thank you! I’ll have to check it out.
I love the drone shots at Horsepasture. Practically in my backyard!
Thank you! Yeah one day when I have a little more time to plan we’ll have to meet up!
@@SimplyMustGo Sounds good!
So I’ve just started considering the overland thing.. my son is now 6 as I am 40.. yes he was a oops! As his sister is turning 16. I’ve found a 2010 xterra and have decided to build a overland rig since my son and I have started camping… I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. Hopefully I’ll see you on the trails sometime I’m located at nc sc line about 1 hr from pisgah.. keep making this great content!
Thank you so much! You should check out a channel called all things overland. He’s a big Nissan guy. You’ll probably get some great ideas from him.

Awesome drone footage!!! I want some of your merch!!
Thank you!! Deal.
I've only done a small portion of the SCAR near my home. It's around Hwy 5 and Hickory Grove that I picked it up. I was able to do it in my '19 GC but not go very far when the path got gnarly. I re-attempted it in my '24 Rubi and much easier. I need to see more of the SCAR now that I have a capable rig.
Yeah you’ll love it.
@SimplyMustGo after I do a few more trails and get my sea legs so to speak and get more prepared, I'd like to try a badge trail or two. Thinking Gulches is a good start. I don't want to travel too far. Do you have any recommendations for a stock Rubicon and novice offroader?
Thinking about checking this section out next weekend for a day trip. The 2wd friendly areas since my 4x4 isn’t ready yet.
Yeah you should. It’s a beautiful area and jumping off rock is great!
@ simply must go I tell u what when u saw that rattlesnake u were very brave to have yr door open and film the snake I wouldnt have done it but my 82 year old grandma would have had a heart attack if she saw it lol i love yr videos btw I've been watching different videos about over landing camping and I love yr vids
Thank you!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻. Yeah I was a little nervous, but the snake was going away from us and as long as it was going the other way I felt ok. Had it decided to look back at me I would have closed the door!
Love to see you guys Pray over your meals. God's Peace and Blessings be with you!
Thank you so much! God bless!
You've found the North Georgia sweet spot, Matt! I've been Jeeping/camping up in that corner of the state for a few years now. Miles and miles of old roads, many of which are only passable with dirt bikes, maybe not even ATV's. Mostly old logging roads and/or cemetery roads that the DNR is obligated to maintain (I use "maintain" loosely). I also was disappointed with that graffiti-laden site which I was told by a ranger they'll soon permanently close. The other sites on the western side of Burrell's Ford are nicer. I'd recommend some just south of the bridge over the Chatooga on the Georgia side of the river. Not crazy private but sandy beach-like right on the river's edge. Perfect for a hammock on a hot summer's evening. God bless from Atlanta!
PS, would love to see the GAIA map of your journey.
Thank you so much! Yeah it’s an awesome area and I can’t wait to get back up there and hit some of the trails / roads I marked to explore when I get back there! God bless!
I love this series and your story telling, did you build your trailer, if so where did the overland tent come from. Safe travels to you and yours.
Thank you! I bought the trailer from Tiny Camper Company out of Florida. The tent was a raptor Series Tent. You can find them on Amazon. I’ve since upgraded to a tent from Outland Motorworks that is a lot bigger and nicer.
You're such a better storyteller than I am in the videos haha.
Thank you, but I love your videos too. Guess we will need to hit the trails together and make a super video.
@@SimplyMustGo sounds like a plan. I want to make it to Tennessee soon that’s a good middle ground!
I don’t have a Miata but my old Plymouth handles these roads pretty well.
Haha nice!
Just discovered your SCAR series and am loving it. I’ve never done the SCAR, but I know of some cool sites and side detours on the section north of Camden that would be fun to ride the Jeep through if you’re interested.
Nice! I haven’t done those sections yet!
@@SimplyMustGo Just off the official route there’s an old dirt road called Beaver Creek Church Rd. There’s an old cemetery there with graves dating back to the 1700’s. That road dead ends at some private property at Beaver Creek, and you’d have to turn around, but it gets pretty technical going down hill towards the end of the road where it’s washed out so bad. Just a consideration if you have the trailer! May want to leave it up hill.
Paralleling Beaver Creek Church Rd (on the official route) is Hilton Rd, which takes you over some sweet granite outcroppings, and has some great views.
In Stoneboro there’s an old plantation house with giant granite columns.
Paralleling 97 in Liberty Hill is a great dirt road that takes you by Liberty Hill WMA. It’s a nice long ride with some tricky mud holes.
There’s some beautiful old houses from the 1800’s in Liberty Hill as well.
I’m new to your channel, noticed from Hurricane Creek to this video you have a different top?
Yes, sort of. It’s actually the same top, but I had it painted white. I have a video coming on some of those things I’ve done, but I’ve been slammed with work and just haven’t been able to get them finished up.
Hest mattress or individual pads might be in order.
Already on it! Haha. I’m not doing busted air mattresses again.
Still have the rtt on the other trailer?
Yep. It’s on the JP trailer.
Which part did you guys go by Congaree National Park?
There really isn’t a section that gets overly close to it.
Is the campsite that got destroyed on Burrells Ford Rd? I think I’ve passed that turnoff and haven’t ventured down it yet because I’ve been by myself with no winch each time.
Yep! Yeah it’s a little nerve racking by yourself with no winch especially if you’ve never done it.
yes it is, I walked down that turnoff for the same reason a couple months ago. The site is trashed and, per my conversation with a passing ranger, will most likely be gated off. That's what we get when idiots trash a campsite. FYI, there are nice smaller sites on the Georgia side of the river near the BF bridge.
Where did you get the Save the squares t-shirt I have a 90 YJ
I think I found it on Etsy.
Looks like a great time. I'm hoping you'll DM me some Google map pin locations of the couple FUN trails!! Hint hint.
Haha. I might be able to give you some hints.
You're killing me. I've had to go back and watch your old stuff. I'm talking your camera videos old.
Hahaha man, I'm not sure if I should feel sorry for you or honored you watched them.
very cool video, but I just don't understand why couldn't have removed that log with your bare hands? you could probably have got away with just chopping it off with an axe without even splitting it into smaller pieces.
It’s doesn’t look like it on camera but that tree was pretty big. No way I was lifting that. I could have spent time chopping it up with an ax, but I would have also had to stand in about 8 inches of water to do it and it didn’t seem worth it.
29 hours 😫
To get to that area?
@@SimplyMustGo till the premiere of the video Im down in the Grand Strand area
Oh haha. Yeah. I had to schedule it before I left to go out of town for the weekend. Wasn’t sure I’d have enough signal to publish it while I was out.
@@SimplyMustGo can’t wait to watch it brother ! Safe travels !
You never did come and visit me
Yeah, it was such a last minute thing and Jessica really needed some emotional resetting, so we just decided it was going to be a just us trip.
Do you every go out with other people, I want to clear and upfront as I am 70+ trans female. I wanted to let you know in advance. When I am out road there are trails I passed up because I was by my self. My Dodge pickup is pretty capable and is equipped with winch, I also carry traction boards and recovery stapes. It would benice to find people to travel with for safety and company.
At this point I’ve only gone out with family and close friends, but I’m hoping to be able to do some kind of subscriber / meetup trip. I just don’t know what would look like yet.
@@SimplyMustGo Thanks for the replay, I would like that if you felt my being trans wouldn't be a problem, I haven't had a problem yet in travels. I have just started checking my g-mail recently,
You should have a map for subscribers with some dispersed camp sites!
