1st Room: “I’m terrified at the prospect of moving that desk!” 2nd Room (empty): Wooow! This room is great! - *I hope he doesn’t know that the windows in here make this room the worst studio in the universe*
You are absolutely right Michael. The ideal listening setup is with the crossover point between the tweeter and bass driver facing directly at the ears. However, Studio Rescue is all about making the most of the space and equipment that you have available, when the ideal setup is not always immediately possible. The EVENT Opals have an advanced waveguide that helps to widen the sweet spot when listening at less than ideal positions, but some well placed speaker stands would help! Well spotted!
any type, please just change them I haven't been able to sleep properly since I saw those net curtains. Im having counselling to help me get over this. I will even send the money to you to change them, Please just change them the world would be a better place if you did.I know you are a good person so please find time to do this.If my offer is not enough please just tell me how much extra money you need to just take them down, fortunately I am well off so any reasonable amount should be ok.
@jobbitydun In such a small space reflections and standing waves are going to be an issue so good sound treatment is essential. The first place to treat is at the point along the wall of first reflection, (there's some great tips in Studio Rescue for finding this). The second thing to look at is sound de-fusion at the back wall, and finally I would want to look at bass traps in the corners. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Thanx for your knowledge patience and education in studio preparation. I had recently purchased pro home recording equipment and used a lot of tips from this show. Education in all areas are keys to life, thank you for helping me open a new door.
Francis uses velcro tape to stick foam acoustic panels to the walls, although you might have some trouble getting them off later on without damaging your paint. If you get in touch with Primacoustic, they should be able to tell you the best way to mount your particular panels without damaging your walls.
@AlexVictorEverett It is. Basically in any normal room you want to absorb as much bass frequencies as you can, because frequencies from, say 40 to 300 Hz is in the modal region where sound waves develop standing waves. This results in local reinforcement and cancellation of frequencies that can be as high as 20-30 db and the dips can be very, very low (in theory sound pressure at the cancellation points is zero) dips. Any amount of bass you can absorb makes the room acoustically bigger.
@JonChicagoDeepGarcia Thanks Jon. We're accepting applications for the second season now via the link in the video description, and are looking to premiere it later this year.
The Flexi Wall is made by a company call 'Vicoustic'. we can't post links in the comments section (youtube limitation) but if you search for Vicoustic on Google, their page should be one of the top results. You'll be able to view their list of USA dealers from there.
thanks for these very helpful videos. I watched them all and obeyed them, and I learned speaker placement really makes all the difference. My system sounds incredibly better now. thanks again!
Hi Mr. Buckley, I am setting up my own studio currently in a nice sized room I have in my basement! I have to say its really helped me watching your videos. As it turns out you are actually my second cousin if you can believe it. My mother is your cousin Susan "Susy" Carroll. Its really awesome seeing a relative doing somthing me and my older brother share a passion with. Please keep the videos coming they are swell. And my mom says "Hello".
No, it's not called an apex. It's called a vertex. And your head and ears are not at that point. The Stereo Vertex Point (the focused point where the speakers are aimed behind your head) should be 14" min. to 16" max. behind your Listening Position (ear line).
Actually glass works as a free reflector, so this room is kinda ideal to make a studio in. wood planks and rock wool will work better than those foam pads any day though!
@jobbitydun 8' X 6'6" whilst not being ideal is more than enough for a mixing space, it compares to the type of size room broadcast audio deals with on a day to day basis in their outside broadcasts trucks. The speaker placement should be along the 6'6" length at least 1" away from any wall. This would give a space between the speakers of 4'6" which should be a good distance to create an equilateral triangle between the listening spot (where you are sitting) and the two speakers.
Yeah I've heard the Opals were really great monitors. Hopefully David invests in a set of speaker stands. Thanks for the great videos and community support. -Michael
@Calcard94 Hey Calcard. We're looking at Atlanta USA for the next season, but being Aussie we'll certainly be bringing the studio rescue home in future, so definitely worth getting in now.
Isn't the ideal height for the speakers to be parallel tweeter-ears? Plus when we calculate height we neve take into account how much we coil forward and loose the sweetspot. Also, in my opinion, the equilateral angle of the listener to calculate the speaker position should be measured around 12-16 inches behind so the sides of this triangle cut perfectly your ear
Check out the link in the video description above. If you head to the Studio Rescue website and enter your details, you'll be in the running to have your studio rescued by Francis in the next season. Good luck!
You guys should show how professional studios are setup. That would be really interesting. Maybe some of the science behind acoustics also. Other ideas like, what materials go into making the panels and the types.. diffusion vs. absorption etc. I would love to see this in the second series.
it is nice, but there is one thing that goes for most of the home studios in this series that i don't like. i get that the sound monitors have to be at the height of your ears, but the computer screen doesn't need to be there. it is uncomfortable to look upwards all the time and bad for your neck and back. the natural position implies looking slightly downwards. tell me what do you think
If you skip to 4 mins and listen to the rooms sterile reverb and ping, and then skip to 10 mins.. you can hear an improvement already! and that's just a vocal recording from the lav mics.
Yeah noticed that too. Before they put it up you could clearly hear reflections, so I was really wondering what it would sound after they put up the panels. Although it helped a bit, it still wasn't that much better imo.
I like how they all act surprised when they get the mic. They probably saw one of these videos before. And all of them (except one I think) get a mic. They know theyre getting it.
I'm in this exact same spot Lol... All my equipment is almost here and I'm not sure if I use my huge walk in closet which is a bedroom in itself of the spare bedroom Lol... #StaySafe & #StayBlessed 😎👍
I'm having an issue believing the symmetry of the set up is going to do any good to the sound. As he said, it's about controlling not killing, but with symmetry you eventually KILL the sound. How does that work?
Would have liked to hear the clap test before and after also an opinion on the sound difference. I know this stuff works so not doubting anything just a few test would be great.
A question I have is i'm moving in 3 weeks and my setup is not centered in the room and I have a project that needs to be finished. Would hanging blankets from one wall, one from the ceiling to make a makeshift wall and one from the back wall help balance the sound to get a good mix so it doesn't sound bad when rendering it to disk to be distributed??
It's amazing...I bet the foam makes no actual difference....which is why they don't do any measurements. Just believe in the foam; the foam will make everything better!
Hello Mr. Francis. My reflective wall is the stairs that lead to my basement? What would be a good idea to fix this space. I thought of putting up some moving blankets to create a seperation. The basement is totally concrete. The sound is terrible.
Hi Francis, I am curious to know how these foam acoustic panels are supposed to be mounted to the walls most accurately. I am in the process of setting up my home studio and want to install a nice kit from Primacoustic but I don't want to damage the walls.
How can I get some of that foam you used for the rescue?? especially that flexi wall!, I've tried going to the Vicoustic site but I'm still coming up short to find a way to buy or even see a Price!! to have it shipped to Texas where I live?!?!?
how will the window/glass behind the desk affect the sound? Even with the dampening, what effect will the sliding glass door behind the mix position have?
+Dan Gore It will be very reflective and cause a problem if monitoring at a high volume (higher sound energies) reflections tend to be less of a problem when monitoring around 60dB SPL however ideal mixing volume is 85dB SPL due to how the human ear works. I would wager this room is less than Ideal for mixing
Does Francis have any tips for main desk placement in a small, 'L' shaped room/studio? I'm over here in North Wales and I guess Francis doesn't travel this far but I loved this series and look forward to the new ones. Thanks.
Why do people act surprised when the mic comes along, one episode Francis should come out with a signed photo of him at the beach. AW YEAH courtesy of the generous folks Rode Mics
what if there is only one big window in the room and there is the only place i can put the desk and everything else ? is the window a problem staying behind the desk ?
Hi Francis hope all is well, I have a question if you don't mind I have a pair of passive event 20/20s they are about 20 years old (just a guess) I was wondering if you still find them to be quality reference monitors thanks very much for your time, Mark
Hi Francis! I'm wondering, are you coming to do the show in Florida anytime soon? I have a home studio but its a mess and I don't know how to set it up! My studio is in the at the end of the living room, which I putted a curtain to be more private and made a room size 12 x 11 feet and at the end there is a big window that goes across 12 feet. The room is big but still I don't know what to do! I'm thinking maybe put my desk behind the window? Any suggestions? Thanks
You are absolutely right Michael. The ideal listening setup is with the crossover point between the tweeter and bass driver facing directly at the ears. I love the horrible acting in this lol
THE OTHER 11 ARE WORST!!!!!!! LOL
its not that bad come on
Ctfuu
you guys should bring this back
Best show about handshakes
Can u guys come rescue my studio? Please bring me a mic too and maybe a macbook pro and a desktop mac thnx lmao
Lmfao for reals
edit name hilarious -_- stupid.
yeh and i also need a tv
A good follow up episode would be to see if everyone who had a studio rescue, had improvement.
1st Room: “I’m terrified at the prospect of moving that desk!”
2nd Room (empty): Wooow! This room is great! - *I hope he doesn’t know that the windows in here make this room the worst studio in the universe*

Listen to that sound difference from about 2:00 compared to around 11:00 minutes. The echoey sound is pretty much gone.
I didn't realize that great catch!!!!
TeeDub wow, you're right. That is pretty awesome
CalicoShellz how did you not catch that lol that’s literally the point of the video
Please please please change those net curtains.
+Prawnchowmein How Thick Felt or Velvet Curtains.
any type, please just change them I haven't been able to sleep properly since I saw those net curtains. Im having counselling to help me get over this. LMAO!!!!
Hello ... I saw francis total 11 videos and I'm grateful for what shows them ... Greetings!
"Hey Francis, we gotta bring that desk in here."
*Francis rolls a new desk out of thin air*
This is probably the best one I've seen. Besides the charming corniness, these episodes are very very helpful

@Gerard2286 Yeah we do - just use the link in the description to apply for rescuing!
Thanx for your knowledge patience and education in studio preparation. I had recently purchased pro home recording equipment and used a lot of tips from this show. Education in all areas are keys to life, thank you for helping me open a new door.
This is my favorite of his studio rescues. He should make more videos like this
I watched all these a few years ago and I finally learned proper speaker placement. It changed my life! Anyway, my audio. THANKS!

You guys NEED to come to Canada !!!
@AlexVictorEverett

@JonChicagoDeepGarcia Thanks Jon. We're accepting applications for the second season now via the link in the video description, and are looking to premiere it later this year.
Would love a room that big as my studio

I wonder the cost of acoustic panels and bass traps needed for room size of 12' × 14' and shipping to Canada .
thanks for these very helpful videos. I watched them all and obeyed them, and I learned speaker placement really makes all the difference. My system sounds incredibly better now. thanks again!

you can hear the difference, start the video from when they go into the space, and then forward to after everything in installed.

I don't know what frequencies they exactly are for but the bass traps in the corners are there to control the low frequency range!
David has the personality of a rock
@Calcard94 Hey Calcard. We're looking at Atlanta USA for the next season, but being Aussie we'll certainly be bringing the studio rescue home in future, so definitely worth getting in now.
The guy keeps saying "I'm down", somebody please help him up!
The funny thing is that he is down, the monitors are a little high :-P
nice Speakers Event Opals ! I love them !
Yeah it's be neat to see more ground up studio jobs with these guys.
@nichampagne The site seems to be working on our end - feel free to PM your application to our RUclips account/channel
wow that's awesome! I recently purchased a RODE NT4 recently and i love it!
plz make more !
Yeah I agree Francis should incorporate a clap/shout test before and after in his studio upgrade videos.
We're planning to shoot a second series early next year. We'll be notifying everyone on the RODE news list, you can subscribe on our website.

The circus background music was perfect 😂😂😭😂
Small rooms can be useful sometimes - can help you hit lower frequencies.
What are or what are the panels with the wooden fence that appear at minute 6:47 ?
Studio rescue or the handshake show? :D
Its called stages
the acting is painful lol, but there are some good tips
how many hand shake did this guys is shaking .. whao
A very useful program and help us dream
francis, come to london and do a series
this is like extreme home makeover for studios lol I'm definitely signing up. Damn I hope he comes thru.
first reflection is comming from the surface of the desk, second one from the back wall third from the celing
Check out the link in the video description above. If you head to the Studio Rescue website and enter your details, you'll be in the running to have your studio rescued by Francis in the next season. Good luck!
Great episode man! You hooked David up like crazy! Lucky duck.

I just love this series.
just wondering if you are going to continue the series?
Thank you, thank you, and thank you for making these videos!

Wondering if you guys still do these?
Best episode I seen so far. It's nothing on a pro level, but still pretty cool. Good job!
Those little PreSonus Audioboxes are pretty cool.
If you skip to 4 mins and listen to the rooms sterile reverb and ping, and then skip to 10 mins.. you can hear an improvement already! and that's just a vocal recording from the lav mics.
I really want to do a series like this in Rio de Janeiro! Always thought of it!
Love it man.Job Great Guys! And Yous both have the same type Monitors :)
You can hear in the video, room acoustics still sound bad even after application of $500 worth of foam, sure looks neat though.
Yeah noticed that too. Before they put it up you could clearly hear reflections, so I was really wondering what it would sound after they put up the panels. Although it helped a bit, it still wasn't that much better imo.

love this show. learned so much from every episode!
where did u all find these bass traps and reflexion panels

only one problem i have with this setup. how would you access the iMac's disc drive with those speakers so close? probably need some speaker stands.

notice there is no echo after acoustic panels this is great
Great!
What's the name of those speakers?
They look awesome...
Hey there! They're EVENT Opals!
Just out of curiosity, is there any reason why you can't put acoustic panels on a window, other than the fact that it wouldn't look pretty?
what if there is only one big window in the room and there is the only place i can put the desk and everything else ? is the window a problem staying behind the desk ?
Those desks look really sweet. Any way to know where I could get them and how much would they cost? I'm based in the UK.
Hi Francis hope all is well, I have a question if you don't mind
I have a pair of passive event 20/20s they are about 20 years old (just a guess) I was wondering if you still find them to be quality reference monitors thanks very much for your time, Mark
By the way love you show!
My house is old and has wood flooring and doors plus wood panelling on the walls. what would you recommend?
Are there any more of these episodes in the works?
6 people need their studio rescued
WHAT desk is that in this video.
Hi Francis! I'm wondering, are you coming to do the show in Florida anytime soon? I have a home studio but its a mess and I don't know how to set it up! Can anyone tell me what those booth panels are called and where I can find them??
