Anderson .Paak is clearly committed to putting his band The Free Nationals on, and why wouldn’t he be? These are his boys and they are talented musicians. Getting Kali Uchis on the track with Mac Miller is no small feat, and a perfect fit here. Kali Uchis pretty much sounds good over everything, and this is the perfect backdrop for her sultry/boner-inducing voice. I wonder if Mac Miller’s recording was just tacked onto this beat or if it was recorded while he was still here. RIP Mac. The only artist I’ve seen who had a mainstream following and then flipped the switch on everyone and started making truly fringe/underground music.
The Free Nationals play for Anderson .Paak during his live shows since I’ve seen him and they are his hometown buddies. I didn’t know they had plans to produce, but if this track is any indication, they have the recipe. Kali Uchis has been labeled by Tyler the Creator as the Gwen Stefani to his Pharrell, which I think is totally appropriate. Kali is super talented and has branched off and become a household name. Mac Miller is a producer/rapper who was talented on both ends and far from his potential.
“Time” has a great sound and vibe to it that I find to be relaxing. It’s got this beachy west-coast sound that makes you feel like drinking a Pacifico with lime on the beach. I love the guitar riff and keys on here. Kali adds to the vibe in the perfect way and really sets the tone. Then Mac Miller comes in with a mellow, somewhat depressive first, which is nothing out of the ordinary for him. His voice fits so well on this beat. “Time” is really hard to dislike and I really can’t imagine anyone not enjoying it.
