("Deltron 3030" (2008) [Del cannot be beat, and Dan's tracks are sooooooo goooooood to where the instrumentals make superb sampling tracks] and "Event 2" (2013)). My music though is inspired mostly by Tangerine Dream, an entirely different genre (Komische electronic/ambient electronic) of an entirely different country.
I personally consider this the best hip hop song ever made. Some of these lines are borderline Morrissey lyrics, "I guess a twinkle in her eye is just a twinkle in her eye." It's simple, but deep and painful, and also profound. It tells a long story of heartbreak to arrive at that simple conclusion summed up in one line. The opening reverse sample and reverb on the vocals makes it sound like it takes place in the past, when things are bittersweet. The organ sample from Summer in the City makes it all nostalgic and melancholy. It's just a brilliant song.
I hear that. It’s up there with other cuts of hip hop perfection for me, too. Sometimes songs that sound melancholy but maybe aren’t completely (or at all) just do the best types of damage to our senses that other feel good song examples just can’t. A lot of my favorites from the genre are songs with thought out soulful, deep cutting beats and instrumental layers, but with the rapping on top of it being real, dirty, funky shit that makes the complete package an attack on all of my check boxes. Southern groups were the best with that shit and guys like DJ Screw took it a step further. Grab some headphones and check out these tracks if you’re up for it: Screw / UGK - Something Good Screw / Al-D - No Way Out Screw / Point Blank - Mind Went Blank Point Blank - After I Die Three-6 Mafia - Da Summa Three-6 Mafia - Fuckin Wit Dis Click Screw / Guerrilla Maab - Fondren 20-2-Life - Servin’ A Deuce Geto Boys - Mind Playin Tricks (obvious) Goodie Mob - Guess Who Scarface - Greed
These guys were so far ahead of their time! The production style, the music video, and even their clothes sound and look like they could be from recent times . I’m 20 and it’s easy to see how much they’ve influenced some of the better artists of this era .
They were not "ahead of their time". They were a reflection of the time. They also took a lot of inspiration from ATCQ and Primal Scream. Comments like these just go to show how new generations think the 90s were some obscure caveman days lmao. I’ve seen comments from kids on Apex Twin and Portishead videos saying the same shit about "so far ahead of their time". 🙄
@@okaysudo For sure. Different style to these two groups though. I love Wu-Tang and Black Moon. Their first albums were playing non-stop in our graduation limo during prom night in NYC 1994!

As a child growing up mid-90's this was one of the first hip-hop songs to go beyond catching my ear and really resonated with me. Decades later it still can take me back to a simpler, care-free time. Salute to thee P-H-ar-cyde! Hip-hop forever.
Hip hop. Yes. A few artist that know how to spit real bars. But not as common as before. Rappers now a days are just pure ass. Rare to find an artist with word play.
Coast Contra... if you like Pharcyde, Tribe, Wu Tang... those young guys emulate the 90s style VERY well while adding their own flair. They're lyrical af too. Don't sleep on them like I did before i finally checked em out. They're legit
it probably won't happen. Remember tho hip hop is always evolving and the same way you feel about this song theres a whole generation who feel the same way to say lil uzi or drakes songs ya know.
I’m a 16 y/o girl and i fell down a hip hop rabbit hole a while ago and happened to find this song. ive been nonstop listening to this for a few months and I’m literally obsessed with the pharcyde now.

@@childvspuddle5732 It means that his assumptions were wrong about her and he must come to terms with the fact that she does not have any special interests in him.
@@childvspuddle5732 "A twinkle in her eye" is a term that means someone is conveying some frisky intensions, by a little glimmer in the eye. It's an American idiom indicating sexual interest, seen in a subtle look. This guy is saying what he understood to be such a glimmer in the girl's eye towards him, turned out to be literally just a glimpse, and she was indeed expressing no interest at all. Dig?
This jam has everything. Vocals, tight rhyming, etheric beat, harmony, brass (a horn), theme (perfect girl ignoring you), differing flows and an artistic video.
Exactly my point ...the TRUE essence of hip hop is storytelling. ..anybody who can read can put a bunch of bragging rhyme words together. If you look at the best their biggest hits were storytelling rhymes ....meaning the mc's with long careers ...Jay-Z biggie, em, wu tang , nas, beenie, even the fugees ...real talk people really forgot what hip hop was about and how it started.
I never knew K'naan used that line in his song with Adam Levine!!!! Didn't catch it they said it first here! So fun how great hip hop artists pay homage!✌🏾🌞🥸💫👍🏿💫
Yup us 80's babies who grew up in the 90's to mid 2000's had the best hip hop music unlike today's generation they got the shit stain mumble rap that 95 to 98 percent is all shit.
Literal masterpiece, it’s a shame people don’t talk about it that much, especially since the song was clearly ahead of it’s time, production wise and vocally.

92 man....feel privileged to have been around when not only Hip Hop was good, bit the whole level of music was fantastic. Bands and musicians had something to say and weren't afraid of trying new ways of saying it. It's all manufactured now and I feel for the folks who never got to feel tracks like this when it first came out.
Critically Acclaimed: This was a different level of art. Forget hip hop for a second and focus on how good this record was, it was beyond hip hop.... this right here, this was one of the greatest records ever made. Of course its hip hop based off the rhymes but this had something special, it was different from what you heard at that time in 90's Westcoast Hip Hop... It was fresh, new, innovative, lyrically sound, sonically sound, it was a masterpiece. The video with them upside down? Then in black in white? Pure Vintage, Classic, classic, classic.. all their verses were good but the last one? That verse made the cypher complete ⭐3:10 That was the perfect verse
Yea, man. They had the formula down. A simple and catchy hook. The verses were melodic and memorable. Great storytelling from everyone. It's a timeless piece. I've been hearing and singing along to this song since I was a kid, but I think right now is the first time I actually listened. Shame on me
@@joeski734 you're kidding right? A majority of rappers are all about getting their emotions out especially after Kanye and kid Cudi. That may not be the case so much in the 90s but it definitely is now

It basically influenced my musical taste for the rest of my life and this is the genesis. Bless you Pharcyde
Lyrics to this masterpiece. Now in my younger days I used to sport as sag When I went to school I carried lunch in a bag With an apple for my teacher 'cause I knew I'd get a kiss Always got mad when the class was dismissed But when it was in session, I always had a question I would raise my hand to make her stagger to my desk and Help me with my problem, it was never much Just a trick, to smell her scent and try to sneak a touch Oh, how I wish I could hold her hand and give her a hug She was married to the man, he was a thug, his name was Lee, he drove a Z He'd pick her up from school promptly at three o'clock I was on her jock, yes indeedy. I wrote graffiti on the bus First I'd write her name then carve a plus With my name last, on the looking glass I seen her yesterday but still I had to let her pass She keeps on passing me by She keeps on passing me by She keeps on passing me by She keeps on passing me by When I dream of fairytales I think of me and Shelly See, she's my type of hype and I can't stand when brothers tell me That I should quit chasin' and look for something better But the smile that she shows makes me a go-getter I haven't gone as far as asking if I could get with her I just play it by ear and hope she gets the picture I'm shootin' for her heart, got my finger on the trigger She could be my broad, and I could be her nigger But all I can do is stare Back as kids we used to kiss when we played truth or dare Now she's more sophisticated, highly edu-ma-cated, not at all over-rated I think I need a prayer To get in her book and it looks rather dry I guess a twinkle in her eye is just a twinkle in her eye Although she's crazy steppin' I'll try to stop her stride 'Cause I won't have no more of this passing me by And I must voice my opinion of not even pretending she didn't have me Strung like a chicken, chase my tail like a doggie She was kind of like a star, thinking I was like a fan Damn, she looked good, down side: she had a man He was a rudey, too, a nincompoop She told me soon your little birdie's gonna fly the coop She was a flake like corn, and I was born not to understand By letting her pass I had proved to be a better man She keeps on passing me by She keeps on passing me by She keeps on passing me by She keeps on passing me by Now there she goes again, the dopest Ethiopian And now the world around me be gets movin' in slow motion Whenever she happens to walk by, why does the apple of my eye Overlook and disregard my feelings no matter how much I try? Wait, no, I did not really pursue my little princess with persistance And I was so low-key that she was unaware of my existence From a distance I desired, secretly admired her Wired her a letter to get her, and it went: My dear, my dear, my dear, you do not know me but I know you very well Now let me tell you about the feelings I have for you When I try, or make some sort of attempt, I symp Damn I wish I wasn't such a wimp! 'Cause then I would let you know that I love you so And if I was your man then I would be true The only lying I would do is in the bed with you Give a try and consider the one who loves you dearly P.S. Love me tender The letter came back three days later: return to Sender Damn! She keeps on passing me by She keeps on passing me by She keeps on passing me by She keeps on passing me by She keeps passing me by She keeps passing me by She keeps passing me by She keeps passing me by She keeps passing me by She keeps passing me by She keeps passing me by She keeps passing me by Source: Musixmatch

Screw / UGK - Something Good
Screw / Al-D - No Way Out
Screw / Point Blank - Mind Went Blank
Point Blank - After I Die
Three-6 Mafia - Da Summa
Three-6 Mafia - Fuckin Wit Dis Click
Screw / Guerrilla Maab - Fondren
20-2-Life - Servin’ A Deuce
Geto Boys - Mind Playin Tricks (obvious)
Goodie Mob - Guess Who
Scarface - Greed
Definitely a crossover masterpiece. Transcends being 'just' a hip hop track.
And then you add this brilliant dream state video with its humour, heartache and visual confusion and it’s the total package.
Bro wrote an entire essay

These guys were so far ahead of their time! The production style, the music video, and even their clothes sound and look like they could be from recent times . I’m 20 and it’s easy to see how much they’ve influenced some of the better artists of this era .
Plus Kanye sampled the intro beat on Drive Slow
If they was ahead of their time they would be wack. Hip hop is dead
@ Kasey Hollar...yep. Went to school with one of them and definitely ahead of their time!!!
Dopest beat to flow off
They were not "ahead of their time". 🙄
The West Coast’s version of A Tribe Called Quest, in my opinion. Although they had their own vibe and flavor! Loved this group!
That's why ATCQ and The Pharcyde are my two favorite hip hop groups (at least feel good hip hop)!

Yes.
Will Hip Hop ever be like this again? Probably not, so I cherish gems like this from our youth.
Could happen. Wouldn’t be surprised if people get tired of the nonsense and go back to hip hop music that actually makes sense.
Hip hop. Yes. A few artist that know how to spit real bars. But not as common as before. Rappers now a days are just pure ass. Rare to find an artist with word play.
Gotta find underground artists who actually spit about real topics! They're rare, but they're out here!

"A twinkle in her eye" is a term that means someone is conveying some frisky intensions, by a little glimmer in the eye. It's an American idiom indicating sexual interest, seen in a subtle look.

Exactly my point ...the TRUE essence of hip hop is storytelling. ..anybody who can read can put a bunch of bragging rhyme words together. This was a different level of art. Forget hip hop for a second and focus on how good this record was, it was beyond hip hop.... this right here, this was one of the greatest records ever made. Of course its hip hop based off the rhymes but this had something special, it was different from what you heard at that time in 90's Westcoast Hip Hop... Throwback to much music
Lyrics to this masterpiece.
Now in my younger days I used to sport as sag
When I went to school I carried lunch in a bag
With an apple for my teacher 'cause I knew I'd get a kiss
Always got mad when the class was dismissed
But when it was in session, I always had a question
I would raise my hand to make her stagger to my desk and
Help me with my problem, it was never much
Just a trick, to smell her scent and try to sneak a touch
Oh, how I wish I could hold her hand and give her a hug
She was married to the man, he was a thug, his name was Lee, he drove a Z
He'd pick her up from school promptly at three o'clock
I was on her jock, yes indeedy. I wrote graffiti on the bus
First I'd write her name then carve a plus
With my name last, on the looking glass
I seen her yesterday but still I had to let her pass
She keeps on passing me by
She keeps on passing me by
She keeps on passing me by
She keeps on passing me by
When I dream of fairytales I think of me and Shelly
See, she's my type of hype and I can't stand when brothers tell me
That I should quit chasin' and look for something better
But the smile that she shows makes me a go-getter
I haven't gone as far as asking if I could get with her
I just play it by ear and hope she gets the picture
I'm shootin' for her heart, got my finger on the trigger
She could be my broad, and I could be her nigger
But all I can do is stare
Back as kids we used to kiss when we played truth or dare
Now she's more sophisticated, highly edu-ma-cated, not at all over-rated
I think I need a prayer
To get in her book and it looks rather dry
I guess a twinkle in her eye is just a twinkle in her eye
Although she's crazy steppin' I'll try to stop her stride
'Cause I won't have no more of this passing me by
And I must voice my opinion of not even pretending she didn't have me
Strung like a chicken, chase my tail like a doggie
She was kind of like a star, thinking I was like a fan
Damn, she looked good, down side: she had a man
He was a rudey, too, a nincompoop
She told me soon your little birdie's gonna fly the coop
She was a flake like corn, and I was born not to understand
By letting her pass I had proved to be a better man
She keeps on passing me by
She keeps on passing me by
She keeps on passing me by
She keeps on passing me by
Now there she goes again, the dopest Ethiopian
And now the world around me be gets movin' in slow motion
Whenever she happens to walk by, why does the apple of my eye
Overlook and disregard my feelings no matter how much I try?
Wait, no, I did not really pursue my little princess with persistance
And I was so low-key that she was unaware of my existence
From a distance I desired, secretly admired her
Wired her a letter to get her, and it went:
My dear, my dear, my dear, you do not know me but I know you very well
Now let me tell you about the feelings I have for you
When I try, or make some sort of attempt, I symp
Damn I wish I wasn't such a wimp!
'Cause then I would let you know that I love you so
And if I was your man then I would be true
The only lying I would do is in the bed with you
Give a try and consider the one who loves you dearly
P.S. Love me tender
The letter came back three days later: return to Sender
Damn!
She keeps on passing me by
She keeps on passing me by
She keeps on passing me by
She keeps on passing me by
She keeps passing me by
She keeps passing me by
She keeps passing me by
She keeps passing me by
She keeps passing me by
She keeps passing me by
She keeps passing me by
She keeps passing me by
