He discusses exactly why I love his movies; he always leaves you thinking. He chooses to play interesting, complex characters. I love that, especially since we get lots of sequel movies from Hollywood. You can count on him to make a genuinely good, well thought out movie.
I like patricia arquette. she is such an underrated actress. In this interview i love how engaging she is and her leaning towards Jake shows she is interested and invested on the the conversation.
I believe Jake has an Oscar in his future. Patricia has always been one of my favorite actors and I was so happy when she won the Oscar this year. Wasn't surprised in the least at her awesome Academy speech.
Surreal and impressive and a great climax with the whole wired thing. Felt like they were talking subconsciously ... Interestingly enough, Jake mentioned it. Pretty cool trick I guess. Like a switch ...
What surprises me os although I have followed her career since Elm street 3, I never thought she was a very good actress. Even in Medium, my opinion didn't change. Kudo's to richard linklater for bringing out such a good performance in her. And I wish her luck on the night
Great interview . . . but it made me want to hear more from both of them about the techniques they bring to their acting. I suppose "Boyhood" was really a special case, since it's virtually the only film of its kind.
Agreed! It seems the older interviews are a lot shorter, but I'm happy most of them now are at least half an hour! So much interesting interactions and matches over the years!
0:18 Jake is one year younger than I and I had just completed fifth grade when CITY SLICKERS came out in the summer of 1991. There's no way he would've been in second grade, unless he stayed back two years in a row.
Jennifer hasn't done anything interesting this year so I don't get why that would be "interesting". I'd like to see Jessica Chastain and Meryl Streep. They're both versatile, I can't think of a role Jessica hasn't done justice to and she's got 3 films this year and Meryl has Into the Woods. Maybe next year Jen as she's got a great role coming up.
PeanutBuddha yeah, "nothing" interesting this year... where does that come from??? seriously, they should shut this comments, people should be spared of comments like this... what are you, an unpaid critic????
bitsmagtv based on the fact her performances have been mediocre this year. She wasn't the stand out in Xmen (McAvoy was great), she played boring Katniss in a filler movie (I'm told that's in the book), and Serena was "meh". Nothing extraordinary like the actors sitting there. Nothing against Jen, I really like her performances just not this year and that's okay. She had BO success though. I don't understand what was so offensive about my comment. It's an opinion.
Beside's Winter's Bone, JLaw owes David O. Russell those wins. Brilliant scripts and directing. I want to see her do something without her collaboration with him.
+TheJoker They're talking about a neurological condition called synaesthesia. It's where two or more senses are connected in the brain, so one sense triggers another. Letters can look like colours, sound can have a taste, numbers can have personalities, flavours can have shapes, etc. Different synaesthetes have different connections, and each one has a different set of associations. It's really interesting, you should definitely look it up! (:
+TheJoker He's probably talking about synesthesia. It's a neurological phenomenon where some people can see colours or hear sounds in connection with numbers or letters.
+TheJoker He's probably talking about synethesia. It's a neurological phenomenon where some people see colours or hear sounds in connection with numbers or letters.
Wow that last part! The fact that the director didn't want to introduce a girlfriend into the movie before the actor actually had a girlfriend l... Wow. Amazing!
thats an interesting question. a good question too. i suppose it has something to with history. the us has had a very different aproach to africans over the tears than europe. well, not different but it just happened hundreds of years later. european countries colonized around the world way before america was even officially discovered. so they got over the whole racism thing earlier, I suppose. that would be my best guess. but one day its gonna change in the us as well.
Artists and filmakers should try to work outside the boundaries of a leading actor needing to have experience, a fan base, speak english, be of a certain color or culture, and promote movies based on their "celebrity". Isn't art supposed to transcend all of that?
For Christ’s sake Patricia shut you’re trap!!! Lol JAKE- Please ask her about nightmare on elm street 3 already!!!!! (Her 1st movie) of which she is totally ashamed of lol
Acting is art. It's expression just like anything else people do to stay sane. Let people talk passionately about their passions. They're not hurting anyone.
They both can take a lot of focus, concentration, experimenting, incessantly analyzed and a need to be re-done over and over until it's just right; both can be done with ease and little to effort; both can be easily--excuse me--fucked up.
+MsJilsephonie... They're is an ART to acting.. and a lot of thought, investigating and research goes into these roles. Actresses and Actors get a particular role they can draw from a lot of different things to really grasp what the role is. Remember how Patricia Arquette was talking about, visualizing the role and scenes as Colors. Then Jake Gyllenhaal talks about he researched coyotes as reference for his character in Nightcrawler, if you see that movie you can start to understand why he did that. Acting is a lot more that dialoguue and emotions, alot of work goes into it.
jake is one of the coolest actors around and interesting
He discusses exactly why I love his movies; he always leaves you thinking. He chooses to play interesting, complex characters. I love that, especially since we get lots of sequel movies from Hollywood. You can count on him to make a genuinely good, well thought out movie.
They are both so underrated. Such a shame. Hopefully this year they FINALLY get some recognition.
Why underrated? Just wanted to use the word?
I like patricia arquette. she is such an underrated actress. In this interview i love how engaging she is and her leaning towards Jake shows she is interested and invested on the the conversation.
Patricia Arquette is the best listener I've seen of all the actors so far.
Shame that was cut short, I could have listened to them talk much longer. Jake strikes me as being a really intelligent guy.
Seriously he deserves an Oscar🔝
Seriously how has never been sexiest man alive??
I believe Jake has an Oscar in his future. Patricia has always been one of my favorite actors and I was so happy when she won the Oscar this year. Wasn't surprised in the least at her awesome Academy speech.
+Mia7189 Southpaw sucked.
Nautilus1972 the fuck, no it didn't
the sarcastic side-eye jake gives her when she brings up the animal thing lol
Surreal and impressive and a great climax with the whole wired thing. Felt like they were talking subconsciously ... Interestingly enough, Jake mentioned it. Pretty cool trick I guess. Like a switch ...
he has such an amazing vibe
yeees
Nightcrawler WAS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! JAKE SHOULD HAVE GOT AN ACADEMY AWARD !! FOR THAT ROLE!!
i love how jake is looking at her in the beginning with the colors and numbers thing like she is quirky but i am going with this haha
this is one of the better actors on actors
I just love his voice and laugh
Nightcrawler was a stunning performance, and one of the most nuanced characters in a very long time
I love Jake
I love Jake.
Jake is a pretty observant guy
SO glad they made things longer! Seems like, with these shorter ones, I'm just REALLY settling in and getting interested when the video ends! :P
LOL the end.. 9:27 "oh.. wow."
+spatzhawk they cut it kinda short this time!
She's so fucking perfect!!
shes an amazing actress
i love Jakey so much! he's so sweet & charming!
@ford holden so he's inevitably a jerk?
Patricia Arquette is going two win the Oscar for Boyhood this year
What surprises me os although I have followed her career since Elm street 3, I never thought she was a very good actress. Even in Medium, my opinion didn't change. Kudo's to richard linklater for bringing out such a good performance in her. And I wish her luck on the night
he WAS lou bloom, one of if not his best performance
I love that Patricia Arquette is a quiet actress/loud feminist..i dig it
Great interview . . . but it made me want to hear more from both of them about the techniques they bring to their acting. I suppose "Boyhood" was really a special case, since it's virtually the only film of its kind.
Love Patricia's depth and sensitivety. I thought Jake's character in Night Crawler was like a combination of sociopath and OCD personality type.
THIS IS THE BEST ONE
Great insight from both artists.
Lou Bloom is a endlessly interesting character! Just endlessly, much like Jake.
Jake is the ACTOR!
omg the ending got good, the whole interview should have been about that.
True Romance and Lost Highway not to forget.
what jake gyllenhaal was talking about is synesthesia, where you see numbers (or letters) as colors. i have it as well.
I love these people!
I remember that Stigmata movie she was on, she scared the living shit out of me
That was intense ...
best movies of 2014.
my only issue with this is the fact that it's so short
Agreed! It seems the older interviews are a lot shorter, but I'm happy most of them now are at least half an hour! So much interesting interactions and matches over the years!
I liked PATRICIA in the medium was AWESOME series!😉
love these 2 POV
All the Arquettes just seem so adorably loopy.
love how she got Mike TV
great pairing! these two are so interesting :)
0:18 Jake is one year younger than I and I had just completed fifth grade when CITY SLICKERS came out in the summer of 1991. There's no way he would've been in second grade, unless he stayed back two years in a row.
I think his character in City Slickers was in second grade
It gets made a long time before it is released especially in those days.
8:18 I am wearing those exact tracksuit trousers right now.
Cut farts in them 💨
Where's the rest!? I want more!
So interesting!! I love this. Keep doing it. Here's one interesting meeting: Jennifer Lawrence & Meryl Streep

I don't understand what was so offensive about my comment. It's an opinion.
yeah that's not how it works. Jennifer Lawrence has no award movie this year.
Beside's Winter's Bone, JLaw owes David O. Russell those wins. Brilliant scripts and directing. I want to see her do something without her collaboration with him.
Their body languages are veeeery interesting!
Aw, Alabama & jack twist, 1991 don't seem that long ago to me, she just a baby in true romance, great movie
this is awesome!!
the phenomenon jake was talking about where you see numbers/words as colours is a real, physical thing called synesthesia - so interesting
Finally - yes! I have that! My whole life and had no idea it was anything more than an exclusive phenomenon
I liked the thing with the animals, very interesting. But what did they mean with the colors and numbers? I couldn't find the connection.
+TheJoker They're talking about a neurological condition called synaesthesia. It's where two or more senses are connected in the brain, so one sense triggers another. Letters can look like colours, sound can have a taste, numbers can have personalities, flavours can have shapes, etc.

Synesthesia
Where's the full interview???
Cool thoughts
he deserved an Oscar for nightcrawler
LOL "even in city slickers" so earnestly
Wow that last part! The fact that the director didn't want to introduce a girlfriend into the movie before the actor actually had a girlfriend l... Wow. Amazing!
Hello Jake hawr you lim very well thank you
In europe a film with an all black cast is considered a human story.
In america a film with an all black cast is considered a black film.
why?
thats an interesting question. a good question too. i suppose it has something to with history. the us has had a very different aproach to africans over the tears than europe. well, not different but it just happened hundreds of years later. european countries colonized around the world way before america was even officially discovered. so they got over the whole racism thing earlier, I suppose. that would be my best guess. but one day its gonna change in the us as well.
because of tyler perry.
(kidding)
+McChulo because ppl in europ have an ounce of sense, versus ppl in USA who.... let's just say don't !!
lol
Europe still just as racist lmfao
A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
you can tell he wants the V
Is this really the full conversation? It seemed to end at an unfinished spot
SERIOUSLY PATRICIA??? NO MENTION OF NIGHTMARE 3???
If Patricia leans in any closer, she'd be in his lap....
those two need to get a room.
Donnie Darko
It pains me that Patricia Arquette has an Oscar before that man...
Patrick Bateman Get the fuck out, she won an Oscar?
Adi Adrian Yep, but Supporting Actress this year was extremely disappointing for performances, her performance was the most obvious.
are you kidding me? that's awful.
+Sandra Curran Gah! She was great, totally natural.
She deserved it. I don't you think you understood her role if you're just going to dismiss it.
Dig it up up holes
A pygmy hedgehog 🥺

Yes! I love your comment!
Jake Said Chairle And The Chocolate Factory But It's Willy Wonka?Eh It's Okay.
"I don't think there are rules anywhere." Umm.............................
I like Arquette, but her performance is absolutely overrated and vague compared to that of Jessica Chastain and Meryl Streep
He lost his retainer!
Synesthesia.
For Christ’s sake Patricia shut you’re trap!!! Lol JAKE- Please ask her about nightmare on elm street 3 already!!!!! (Her 1st movie) of which she is totally ashamed of lol
i
I stand with Gina Carano. She's lovely
She talks so much crap.
I dont know why but patricia arquette making me cringe with her weird animal questions
they're making acting as some kind of art it's only acting for gods sake it's not a brain surgery
Acting is art. It's expression just like anything else people do to stay sane. Let people talk passionately about their passions. They're not hurting anyone.
The same can be said about any art really? Look at those idiots staring at that peice of paper with paint on it, analyzing it.
It's not easy. Acting takes a lot of talent, thought, and even soul searching.
They both can take a lot of focus, concentration, experimenting, incessantly analyzed and a need to be re-done over and over until it's just right; both can be done with ease and little to effort; both can be easily--excuse me--fucked up.
