    Hey Fam! Thanks for watching. What tips do you have for practicing in your non-dominant hand?

    • @Pecos1
      @Pecos1 3 года назад +2

      Michelle, I'm a Southpaw, so when I follow your tutorials I am always using my left hand. So for me, TPB quote would be, "I know a secret... I'm now right-handed. 😁😁😁"

      I have to work about one and one-half times harder with my right hand on many tasks.

      I have been down this path, as I have been consciously alternating hands on a myriad of daily tasks with my left hand. I'm happy to report that I am no longer right hand dominant.

      I loved every second of this video! 😆❤️ My tip for practicing in your non-dominant hand is this: just do it. Try eating with your left hand. Clean/vacuum your room with your left hand. Brush your hair with your left hand. Write with your left hand. Or try playing an instrument, something simple like a kalimba would be a good start. Honestly, I found that even just doing mundane things with my non-dominant hand has improved my coordination and reflexes in general. Most of us were given two hands, seems a waste to not use both to their full potential. 😅

    Surprisingly, the activity that helped me build coordination in my left hand was boxing.
    My left arm was used to punch, parry, and block compared to my right with about a 10:1 ratio per every training session.

    I have a lot of issues with my right wrist, so I have been working on using my left hand more. And when I was taking Arabic, I did all of my writing with my left hand since the writing flows right to left. I do that when writing Japanese vertically as well. So my handwriting proficiency is different in each hand depending on the language I am writing! Definitely a great exercise for fine motor skills.

    Imma be honest, that Inigo and Westley scene did actually keep it in my head to work my left when I just had a single baselit, lol. Just did things slow and goofy and did more with it. Gave it extra time is all.
    Came into this weak with illness that I'm still kinda dealing with. Affected mental, too. But, this is helping with both. Wasn't quite expecting the brain boost, but it is there.
    Am finding it meditative as well. Which is probably where the open-mindedness gets in. Keeps me calm in environments with too much to pay attention to, but then I'm almost putting monk hours in on it as a result. Distracts me from my other discomfort while I don't seem to be inhibited by it so far, which I will take.
    What probably helps me most is the reversing thing, and then chunking just for figuring out the coordination of something. My right side tends to learn a movement first, and then I just try to mirror it repeating each hand back and forth until it's proficient enough, then repeat until it goes sloppy, rest, repeat, rest, repeat. If I'm dropping on something, I go back to this. Single out the problem spot, iron it out, then try the fuller movements.
    I'm also not in a big rush to stray from basics. Also constantly watching this type of content. I'm not doing it as I practice really, but watch a lot at home, then see what comes out at work. A bit messy, but I'm able to listen to my body, take this at pace that's comfortable. And then while I'm doing that I'm trying to learn more from the staff or saber itself. How it wants to go. And then now it's weird because sometimes I have my left doing things my right has to learn from it.
    Appreciate your vids. Between you and a couple others, I'm getting a lot of good ideas to go forward. Except how to make people believe they can watch YT vids and learn stuff, too, lol. 😅

    Left hander here.
    While I was learning the double obi-ani, took me a while to make my flourish look like a natural flow. Then I used my left and it came so easily to me. Still practicing with both but righty takes a bit more time to get with the program. oddly enough there are certain flourishes that my right picks up faster...the human body is odd man.

    So, give your other hand a shot. You might be surprised.

    Cross-body coordination promotes growth in the corpus collosum ( gateway between brain hemispheres ). Having a well developed corpus collosum is correlated with increased intuition, and was the one real anomaly found in Albert Einstein's brain.
    A simple beginner trick to train yourself to get used to using your off hand is put your drinking glass/cup on the other side of the plate, and only allow yourself to lift it to drink with your off hand.
    You never know which side of your body is going to be pinned in a car wreck, so make sure either arm can do what is necessary to get you free before you and your fellow occupants burn to death.

    before the video started.. practise!! I should actually start practising again. I actually stopped due to having a shoulder injury (also known as frozen shoulder) on my right. Funny how you learn you are so used to using your dominant hand. I have always been pretty ambidextrous as I do particular things (like eating) left handed as my dad was left handed, this is really teaching me to use my left hand more. I should just practise left only..

  • @MrMysticmatt
    @MrMysticmatt 2 года назад +1

    Iv always drilled both sides as being a left handed person but some things I'm better with my right and others with my left, but for staff I always drill both sides , however when I flow I will only do certain moves on whichever side it felt more comfortable for and that is one of my biggest hang ups is even if both sides can do it they slowly loose thar skill as I just flow and I move in the most comfortable way for each move. So I will say for others always drill both sides and when you notice u become too hung up on doing something to the one side break that pattern and take time to drill the other side more so you open up more possibilities and feel comfortable no matter what side you are doing something on .

    I usually just split exercises half and half. Sometime 3/5 goes to my left side since it is my worse side.
    The only time i will use my right hand more is when learning a new move or trick.
    Like Michelle said its a two handed activity which mean you should feel obligated to be able to do most trick in both hands. A lot of the martial arts stuff we do now with weapons is more about flashiness and impressiveness. And it's far more impressive to the viewer/watcher if you show control and skill with both hands

      It's literally in my left hand the majority of the time? Though, maybe what you are mentioning is the Standard Direction of Movement? Which is the clockwise or left to right (the way we read) direction. I find that even when practicing in my left hand sometimes, it's easier to sit in that direction.
