Talk Talk were marvellous when they were synthpop, were marvellous when they were psychedelic-pop, were marvellous when they were slowcore or postrock. They have always been fantastic artists and musicians since 1982 to 1991.

He was a one-off. Voice full of longing & melancholy. And such character: once he'd decided he'd nothing more to say he just stopped. Utter respect. R.I.P. Mark.

Fun video. I only discovered Talk Talk myself about a year ago and have been obsessively listening to them ever since - like good cheese and wine. I was 16 in 1984 and I too had never heard of them, a shame since I probably would have reacted in a similar way (obsession) back then too. Great band - sad that Mark Hollis left us so soon.

Aw nice I love Talk Talk so much. Yeah they did the opposite journey of Genesis, becoming less and less mainstream. They had a few big hits including It's My Life. With their 1988 album Spirit of Eden, they arguably invented what came to be known as Post-Rock. And it's really an incredible album...

    • @luxmoto7344
      @luxmoto7344 2 года назад +1

agreed on most. Disagree on the Genesis part, Genesis went mainstream when Peter Gabriel left. Genesis stopped being Genesis when he left. Peter Gabriel however carved his own path. Sometimes mainstream liked it, but that was never his goal, just like Mark Hollis.

"I"m always interested to see what the band looks like."
The three core members were Mark Hollis (vocals), Lee Harris (drum kit), and Paul Webb (bass).
The other musicians at Montreux were hired for the concert (or maybe the tour).
The guy at the stacked synth is Ian Curnow. He and the pianist worked with them often (I'm sorry but his name escapes me at the moment - will get back when I have time.)

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE Talk Talk and they're fantastic live, but I prefer the 1984 concerts, there's still the great quality audio & video footage - but here the band seem just a little tired of having played the same songs for so many nights across Europe and the States for 2 years... the '84 footage seems more vibrant, more alive, having seemingly more fun. I strongly recommend you check out one or all of the 84 concerts uploaded to YT - they really do all have their mojo working and it is totally uplifting, almost as good as being there. Mark was an outstanding vocalist and always put so much passion into his performances, and the rhythm section is just so tight. Lee is a skilful, precise drummer - I find him fascinating to watch - almost like a machine, and a little like Animal from the Muppets lol, and the sound Paul gets from his bass is just gorgeous. There were so few bands that were this good live, they were a real treasure.

I saw this show at Manchester Apollo on the same tour 1986
My brother and I were huge fans, had their albums and bought our tickets .
I thought they were amazing, superb musically and Hollis didn’t miss a note….
My brother left half way through complaining they were boring and if he wanted to listen to the album he could have done it at home 😂😂
I had to meet him in the pub next door after the show
    RIP Mark Hollis ❤

Oh I love Talk talk so much! they began very pop to get more and more prog-arty band in the end, sadly Mark Hollis, the singer-leader died last year.. I wish you to try the album "the color of spring", all the album is awesome, song like "Life's what you make it "is worth the try of the album. Interesting for you to know, David Rhodes (Peter Gabriel) played on several album.

Another of my favourites bands ever, along with Genesis, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Marillion, IQ, Camel, Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson.
One of the most underrated band ever. people thought that they were a commercial band due to the first album, they've been wrong, considering the following.
Try the album the Colour of spring, total masterpiece. Sadly Mark Hollis, the singer, the lyricist and main composer died last year.

Another band I love. These songs are from their second of five albums. Still during their pop/nee wave period. The live footage is from the tour of their third album, Colour of Spring. That is the transition period. I can't think of another band that evolved more over 5 albums.

To have a good idea of their greatness, you’ve to hear their next album (Colour Of Springs). One of the few great album of the 80’s. Like TfF (Seeds Of Love), it’s the perfect blend between good pop songs with a fantastic artistic sensibilities.

I'd suggested the Montreux Jazz Fest performance of 'tomorrow started' to one or more odd reactors, but I'd hazard to guess that none ever took it up. Now you've got to check the last two LPs, the first of which resulted in an end to them as a live band.

At last someone who listens to lesser known bands as well as mainstream, excellent, if i'm going to walk down memory lane, i prefer to walk with someone who listens and appreciates what their ears are telling them, to hear both music and lyrics as they meet. Have a listen to "Drops of Jupiter" by Train, "Cuddly Toy" by Roachford or "Turn the Page" by Bob Seger (this one a bit slower but the quality of song carries that), a treat you'll won't to keep repeating. Enjoy your journey, i know i am.

Since, as you say, this is a journey to find new music, got a modern day prog band that I really think you may like as well. Katatonia from Sweden. They started out as a death/doom metal band but has really found their best self as a band with the release of "Dead End Kings". I don't think you can miss with anything by them from Dead End Kings on. One of my favorite song by them, though really short, is "The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here". A Live acoustic version clip exist from their "Sanctitude" DVD/CD set. And I know you like to pull up the lyrics but haven't been able to find any that are accurate. Just thought I'd throw this one out there. [Edited....what the heck happened? Part of my original post was missing. lol]

Odd to think that they were initally marketed as a sort of Duran Duran but later on they went sort of ambient jazzy, if that means anything. Clearly quality, but maybe a bit self indulgent. Or maybe I've not listened to it properly. Good band though.

Whilst I enjoyed your viewing of all 3 songs, including the 2 live versions, you really needed to articulate your thought process behind what you'd just heard. No offence intended, but I could've watched all 3 performances without you and have gotten the exact same experience. Yes, we know it's an 80's band, but there was no analysis or gauge to what you as a listener had learnt from it.
