I've missed these videos from Kyle. They were my first real exposure to EV's and eventually led my wife and I to purchase a 2022 Model Y. Thanks for taking the time to share your trip!
Agree, the road trip videos were (and are) very catchy.... just watching the view change...
One of the few good channels to find quality Model S content
I can only hope the CCS world gets their poop together and delivers this kind of experience in next few years. The frustrating thing is it's not like this is new, this is how it's been with Tesla for a decade. So the CCS operators and manufacturers have no excuse. Thanks for another great video Dave.
I'm afraid that CCS chargers giving people a bad taste of EV's is actually part of the plan. How else can "we" continue to see ICE cars if Ev charging works well? I know this sounds sarcastic, but I assure you I'm quite serious. GM did it back in the 90's... they made EV1 and said the battery tech wasn't there... but 18650 batteries were common at the time. They wanted to be able to justify continuing to sell ICE.... so now we have the same game but with the charging infrastructure.
CCS charging station shall be installed and maintained by EV car dealership and manufacturers. You cannot expect 3rd party EV power station provider to do as good of a job because they sub-contract the installation and maintenance to a 4th party to cut cost. EV public charging stations are a profit making center and a brand loyalty builder for a EV car company. Get on board Ford and GM and build your network of EV charging stations.
@@videopyc there are thousands of gas stations all over the country and all of their pumps are provided by a 4th party (pump maker)to the 3rd party (gas station). GM and Ford do not provide gas pumps yet they work just fine. Is it wrong to expect same of CCS chargers?
@@ai4pxo one makes much money on selling gas, apparently. It’s the fact that they get you to their retail location and then you stop and spend $. But at least it’s a super well understood business with mature supply chain and inputs and outputs and the ability to radically change price when need be. Does any of that sound like the CCS world now? Nope. Except for a very few logical spots like truck stops where it’s a win win that the stations are there. Instead what I see the most after charging roughly 150 DCFC sessions with an EV6 Light is that if anything the least logical spots tend to have the highest prices, hardly any pricing is flexible with the exception of EVgo (and of course Tesla). In the big picture “are we there yet” for CCS charging I’d say say we are not even close to having good locations, good hardware, a good company or companies with a high incentive to provide a Tesla like experience that’s safe, reliable, easy and properly priced.
@@skyemalcolm most gas stations don't make much money on gas, they make money on cokes and lotto scratchers. I can't imagine why gas stations wouldn't want bored people hanging out for 30minutes! I called Loves Truckstops when they were breaking ground on a station near Santee SC and suggested this very thing. They had no foresight and now three years later there is a Tesla Super charger across the exit ramp at a Dairy Queen. At least Wawa has figured it out.
Made a true believer out of me last summer when we took our model 3 standard range from southern mass to Panama City Florida, even in a standard range the network worked flawlessly!
I did this similar trip(starting point Cape Cod) in 2016 w/2016 Model S60(210ish mi range) with no pre planning and it was flawless. And that was when there were like 15
SC total along the entire East Coast between MA and FL. That trip made me a true believer!
Great content. My wife was watching over my shoulder and remarked: “So this is what you do all the time in your head when you drive?”
Great video to remind me just how effortless the Tesla experience is.
90 minutes of pure entertainment - love those road trip videos! Can’t wait for the return trip! 😁
This was interesting to see that the Tesla charging was seamless. I have been watching Brandon Flasche with his Rivian. He uses mostly Electrify America and it seems like there are always issues charging.
I don't even 'plan' a roadtrip. I just put in a destination and listen to the car. Like, it's still an EV and therefore charging is "slow" (ie ~1 hour of charging for every ~6 hours of driving), but it's almost as easy as gas cars. The major issue is V2 chargers are terrible, but v3 are almost always amazing.
@@descendencywhat’s your ride if I may ask? A MY or M3 or newer X or S presumably?
@@skyemalcolm model y performance 2022
Keep in mind that older models may not take advantage of the 250 kW rate, or that the amount of time spent utilizing the higher power is limited. We find the charger that takes us off route the least and has facilities that are open when we’re traveling after 9pm, so ones at highway rest areas rather than ending up at a closed shopping mall miles off course.
this was especially enlightening, my wife is still bucking the technology but i know how to sweet talk her :)
Lol mine too. She wants to keep a hybrid and she hates range anxiety. And the complexity of charging a CCS car. Might need to bite the bullet and buy her a Tesla if I want her to go electric. (Keep in mind her first EV was a LEAF and she currently drives a PHEV Clarity.)
Dave that was such an enjoyable video, thanks for putting it together. Have a great New Year .
Just love your videos!
Quite educational, and entertaining.
Drove from south texas to north new Mexico and the tesla superchargers never failed me in the extreme cold during the storms we had a couple weeks ago
Happy New Year! I happened to find your channel and have learned a lot of information regarding Tesla in preparation of my Tesla Model 3 delivery next Friday. I lived in Laurel, MD for the past 15 years (what a coincidence 😊) and used to go to the shopping area where you charged your Model S. I just recently moved to SC, miss Laurel so much.
Thanks for the trip. Fantastic!
Awesome report! Kudos to your ability to travel five hours without a pit stop/toilette! Neither my husband nor I can match that!
Or he cut off the video when he went out the window.
the Tesla Supercharger Network is what convinced us to buy a Tesla. it's a no-brainer.
Great video. Can’t believe I watched the whole thing
You’re awesome sir ! Thank you!
Amazing video Dave. Really love your road trip videos.
Good test if ya charging on ya long range Tesla S here cool vlog . Happy new yr 2023
I'll be doing a similar trip next month in my Model Y Performance (from Boston to Orlando). I'm looking forward to it, and this video got me hyped!
Very enjoyable! Bet Bailey was happy to get down to the warm weather. 🐶
Loved the video. Look forward to the next one 🙂
Thank you Dave. Best video for a real road trip in Tesla. Hoping I can do the same in the near future when I get my own.
Very entertaining, I watched your video from start to finish. Tesla is the King 👑
I have really enjoyed your road trip! Living the American dream.
"hey dave, you're a bad guy" LOL so good!
Great way to spend Saturday morning. Great info. Spot on regarding Tesla chg station. Just drove 2700 miles from Delaware to Mesa, AZ....
love road tripping so much this is the second time viewing this, music music music loving it
Howdy?! Out. Enjoyed, insane edition, all the best!
I can't believe I watched the whole thing, but you hit three Supercharger stations that I used when I drove down to Palm Beach County from Northern Virginia back in November.
Great video. Going to test drive a Model 3 next week, may end up getting a used one.
Great highlights of how easy Tesla supercharging is
Always enjoy your videos Dave, keep 'em coming. Noticed your back window, is that a crack or a cable in view?
Cable for 3 channel dash cam temporarily installed :)
Thanks Dave. Nice job, this is the one reason I am nervous about upgrading my Model Y to a Fisker or Hyundai. When I have to drive from upstate NY to Anna Marie island.
Happy New Year. Are you going to get the round steering wheel like Kyle? I test drove a S but couldn't handle the yoke. Glad you can now order one with a round steering wheel. Have a safe trip. Bailey looking good.
Dave i have 2020 MS performance and i live in GA but family is in MASS so this info is very helpful to me. you are traveling the same route i would take. and your Super charging stop tips are great and i will use that because it makes much sense on how the tesla charges. Love you and Kyles work. keep up the great work. Fyi i would love to have a 2021 MS the hardware improvements are worth it as I see the differences even in the lack of software features the 2020 doesnt have that the 2021 has. I love the yoke too.
Amazing when you own the infrastructure from top to bottom and can’t blame anyone else for the issues, it just works.
On my model Y, fsd beta wants me to move/turn the wheel slightly (torque).
Try it on the way home.
Good video
Thanks
Bob
Dave -- I'm pretty sure I saw Bailey nodding in agreement with you while you were talking about that Wawa chili. Though, it looks like you ate it, anyway. 😁
Seriously, thanks again for another road trip video. And gosh golly, you could make a whole video about wandering around Buc-ees, and taking a closer look at the things that grab your attention. And we really do want to see another stop at South of the Border.
A few other bits:
"This is what I watch on television these days." Long videos are perfectly fine with me. You have a very good mix of useful information and entertainment. "I'm looking forward for your video of the trip back home."
Always good to see "getting on the road in the wee hours of the morning." The best time to travel, in my opinion.
One more time in Autopilot jail, and you'll have to rename your car "Jailbird."
Ultimately, I expect CCS will get its act together. Meanwhile, it really just hurts the whole concept of "EV adoption" with two different, incompatible systems. And you came "this close" to waiting in line a few times -- on the road to "mainstream" EV adoption, the numbers will change all the time. When you get to a charging station and there are 20 or 30 or 40 cars in line ahead of you, then "it won't be so easy."
Finally, yes, Bailey is awesome. You have served as a fine chauffeur. Thanks again for a fine, fun video!
Thanks for watching Tom! And for such an awesome comment!
Super great video. I run the Richmond VA to Sarasota part of that trip a lot. Next car will be an EV. I hope the Government gets its head on straight with the tax credits cause I would love to buy a Model Y but not crazy about 7 seats. Hope you had a great New Year! Thanks for the great content!
Nice and smooth 🥸👍
Can the Tesla report in terms of miles per kWh? Why do you express it in terms of Wh per mile? It seems more logical to express it in terms of miles/kWh, just like we do mpg.
"BlackBox "right on time
I'm all moved in up here in Fairfield, CT. Tesla is here and have my NEMA 14-50 plug installed. Excited to take my Tesla to a bunch of places in the NE....Excited to be here.
Welcome!
awesome music in the videos
I used to work in Lumberton. I stopped at that Oasis constantly. IT was never busy and always clean.
This is great!
Dear Dave, Awsome vidoes ! ! ! i would like to know what kind of mobile handle you use in your MS for your IPhone holding and video recording. Thanks in advance !
Gromit and I cooked our popcorn and are looking forward to this.
I had a similar range / destination scenario on my trip from Cape Cod to FL in June. Car told me I didn't have enough. I stayed longer and then it did the same as yours. On;y happened once on the whole trip though.
I grew up in Halifax county. That supercharger is a busy location and nice for the driver’s. Boat Tailed Grackle like the Model S too.
5 Minutes in , love camera placement. I feel like I'm in the car. 🇰🇪👍
Putting a far away destination in the Tesla navigation system always seems to come up with charging stops that are too short distance away. You have noted that in your video. So the Tesla navigation is not optimal for long trips. What is the best strategy?
Great video on an East Coast road trip during the Pre- Christmas time. I am in Eastern NC, have Model Y for a year, a Beta tester for six months. Only one road trip in the Summer, but it was also flawless. Suggestion: my understanding of the battery icon is that that is only shows battery percentage times EPA range. Thus, it is useless for predicting actual range. I always leave mine set to percentage.. One always uses the charge-predicted percentage, which, as you saw, works well. As also noted in other comments, the consumption/range plot works great. As for Autopilot strikes, or jail, in addition to torque on the steering wheel, you have to keep your eyes on the road. I have never gotten a strike in about 5K miles on FSD Beta. Again, the video was so good, I, too, can't believe I watched the whole thing.
Pretty good test for a model S in very cold weather. Your rated range is based on a set value which is about 240 wh/mile, so if you drive at 78 mph in windy conditions at 19 degrees with battery preheating, you may end up getting 460 wh/mile, which is close to 50% efficiency. Extreme conditions.
lmfao the jailbird
Glad to see the trip worked out so well. Thank you for the detail. I do wish Tesla would update the navigation to show things like light cameras, report accidents, and notify contacts of your trip which almost all other navigation software now does.
Although I’ve not had major issues with electrify America when road tripping with my Mach e, it’s definitely an easier experience with my Model 3.
Planning my first road trip (2023 Y LR) from Tacoma, WA. to Mesquite, NV. I purchased Tesla specifically for Supercharging. I did not want to have any problems with CCS Chargers.
Dave, Great rode trip! Also a dedicated Tesla SC believer. Two comments: 1) I have identical Model S (without Baily), and on my trip to MN from OH in 19F temp, after a recharge to 85%, and error came up stating no method of payment available, and no further SC allowed until payment provided, all despite having a valid cc on my Tesla account. While driving I added another valid cc to my Tesla account, and it did not remove the dash error. I had to divert to a CCS station when down to 20% (validated the need to carry a CCS adapter). Then by chance I stopped by a Tesla SC to just plug in to see what would happen, and that cleared the error on my dash thereafter. Have you encountered this anytime on the Tesla SC network (when in 19F temps)? Comment 2: FYI ONLY On your St George stop, that Model Y didn't have red side walls, but rather, rim savers that were red in color. Regards to Kyle too!
Dave, there is a place in one of the FSD menus where it will tell you which part you're not doing well enough.
Pls Show us. 🇰🇪👍
@@Padie600 Tesla safety score can be viewed in the Tesla app. But first, you have to opt into the Safety Score program by pressing the Request FSD Beta button.
It thinks your using a steering weight.
Fun video! I noticed a very similar issue in my Model Y while supercharging in the cold where it kept telling me I’d arrive at my destination with -5% even though the difference in predicted range and actual range was massive. I sat and waited to charge for an extra 15 minutes until it showed a 8% arrival, but then the second I stopped charging it jumped up and showed I’d arrive with 30% which was accurate. It was a big waste of time and money to sit there that extra time, especially while I had cranky tired kids in the back. I have to think there’s some sort of bug in the Tesla estimation when it’s below freezing. Maybe it’s not taking conditioning if the batteries into account or something. I hope it’s resolved soon.
Agree! Good to hear I wasn’t hallucinating
Just looked at the configurator I see you can get a proper steering wheel now I wonder if you can retro fit this to yoke cars ,they just need blind spot monitoring and a way of integrating Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, love to see you do a trip over to Denver sure Kyle would give you a room
Yes you can retrofit (tesla installs everything) the round wheel for 700$
I’m leaving for Florida first week in February from Rocky Hill to Titusville
Awesome road trip and advice. Too bad Bailey didn’t get the prime center stage and was sleepy most of the ride. I think Tesla calculates for people with a lead foot like me. I usually will get bad efficiency because of speeds traveled. Usually I never get close to the epa rated efficiency.
In Halifax, NC they did have 2 Chargepoint units and then they removed one…
It wouldn't be a road trip without Bailey.
Hey Dave.... I saw that Tesla is now offering the round steering wheels for the S and X. Are you still going to change yours out?
I had the same thing happen to me that you had with the calculation to Brunswick GA. It was a relatively cold day and I was driving home from Ottawa. I started my Navigation and was 30 minutes from the charger and the battery started preconditioning as soon as I set my navigation. I think there is a slight flaw in the range estimation when preconditioning. I have Teslafi and noticed that is seemed to use the preconditioning miles/wh (which sucks because it draws a lot of power to precondition in colder weather) instead of a more realistic rate. I stayed and charged 15 min more than I needed to. The range estimate went up 15% as soon as I pulled away from the charger. The estimator is more realistic when you have travelled some time and preconditioning isn’t the only mileage Tesla uses to calculate estimated arrival charge.
Its cold weather I had that with the Model 3, its trying to manage the heating and cooling of the battery. So you get some generally odd behavior.
I test drove a new Model S LR yesterday and was very impressed. It had a yoke, and I found out the yoke is acceptable. Difficulties only came up when I tried to make a U turn. If I had been used to it things would have been fine though. I'm on a Model 3 P right now. Might have to get a Model S LR next. It feels very powerful. Like one of those muscle cars from the past.
Thanks Dave for the road trip, but I have questions, is the driving regen setup different on the model S than model Y, back about 1 year ago or slightly more there was two levels of regen you could pick on the Model 3 & Y, then Tesla in their mindless control decided that the regen 2 level option should not be available any longer
Only 1 setting on the car unlike the Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis products which are adjustable. So nice!
Bailey is sooo cute!
I would like to consider other EVs but the Tesla charging system has me only buying Tesla. Great channel Dave I really enjoy it.
👍Yeah anyone road-tripping on I-95 try to avoid Rocky Mount, NC. It’s an old 2013 install, 3 miles off the highway, just 120kw so slow and busy, limited amenities. Try to hit the new V-3 250kw awesome!✌️😊
To be fair, you need to do a twofer road trip. Start with a CCS car and Tesla in CT and drive to FL keeping up with each other. Not a race... but see who has the high score for charing along the route.
That Riverview Tampa station is about 4 miles from my house. It is rare that you see more than 4 cars charging at the same time, even though there are many Tesla owners around here.
In contrast, arrived at a brand new EA station in Tampa. 1 out of service, 2 charges at 30kw, 1 charges at 150kw. How is this even a thing? One month old station. Volkswagen group secret way to kill EV adoption. Run negative press on Tesla and then sack their own charging stations.
That's why it's risky to get anything but tesla
This is a sad way to be for BEV adoption.
@Michael agreed, but no other mfg. Cares about charging infrastructure like tesla, they just wanna sell you their car. But don't give a shit how an where you gonna charge. That's why tesla leads in every way.
Great video Dave.

Also how are the headlights on the new revamped Model S (2021 refresh), better than the 2019 100D model?
I think they are a tad bit better yes
What app do you use to show the graphs and data on the trip, energy charging?
Yulee is an especially useful stop as Florida Power and Light has 6 350kw CCS chargers there too. You probably drove past them on the way in. They are often in use. FPL only has a few 350kw chargers in Florida, but they seem to be reliable.
O yes. I saw them. They will be a central figure in my return trip to CT video. (And not in a good way) Stay tuned
@@dconner9 Dang. I just got my CCS adapter and was planning on trying it there on my next trip to South Carolina. Had high hopes for the FPL chargers.
Just saw your PlugShare check in. This is really unfortunate.
how do you like the ride on those 19s?
Dave, thanks for the good video. Tesla may be staggering cars on their charging network to give the best results. That is why the car gives short drives between each plug in. No waiting. Fast exit. Since the time of FREE forever charging, credits for fast charging being denied, or cars being black balled from plugging in, or even idle fees, the network can be changed. It is great you have the other adapters. I'm sure Tesla will open up their network soon to non Tesla vehicles. The empty spots will bring in revenue.
I charge at that same location in South Carolina would be nice if they gave you the ability to drive through
Damn! I think I'm really sucking down the juice on roundtrips with 2 bicycles on the back at 310 w/mile on my model 3 dual motor at 70-ish...
Does your S have the new energy graph yet? I use that and leave the car on percentage. The miles is rated by percent, so IMHO worthless.
We are in Marco with our Model X- Like to meet you and Kyle
Can you road trip the original Route 66 in any EV? I appreciate what Tesla has done to kickstart the industry as a whole but for me personally I'm not a fan of their designs and will stick to my CCS but I'm also not in the US, not that there isn't issues where I live either on the CCS 2 chargers.
Hi, Dave. I don't think I saw you reference the onboard energy usage app (I forget the name) with the built-in graph. It has interesting stats on how much energy was used by things like the drive train, climate control, etc. It also says how much your range was affected by speed, wind, hills, etc.
That’s on the 3 and Y. The energy app was pulled from the S completely. Kyle tried to pull it up on his S and wasn’t able to. It’s set to return with the updated info but afaik it’s not back yet.
@aannabi works fine on my 22 Model X. Edit: would be surprising if not available on S if it's on X. Have had access to it since I took delivery close to Thanksgiving.
Not to take anything from Kyle, your videos are the best.
I totally need to send this comment to my boy
Irfan, do u by any chance work for a company on West St?
@@dconner9 no I’m retired and manage my family office
@@dconner9 😂👍🏼
How long was the charge.
I would like to add, while the advice for skipping a charge at 30% works ok over on the East Coast where you typically have Super Chargers every couple of miles. Be careful doing that though through the west. Super Chargers can be spaced 100 - 150 miles apart on stretches and if you opt to skip one, you probably won't make it to the next. Always check, if you are going to skip a charger, that you can still make the next one if you do.
At the end of the day not all folks needs for long road trips fit into Tesla vehicles lineup: all 4 models are coupes, nonpractical for a family. For instance for my family road trips are very rare but we need 3 full rows vehicle with decent room in the third row for adults. Plus decent luggage space. Only Rivian R1S might fit those needs in the future. Yet it is too expensive. We do not need to tow. Our area can get quite cold: inland Pacific north west. We simply opted for a preown Chrysler Pacifica PHEV for now.
Because they cheesed off many a millennial minivans aren’t allegedly cool. However given the very real efficiency constraints with EVs it seems to me there’s a massive unmet need for EV people movers, minivans, tall 3 row station wagons, whatever you want to call them is fine but as you say there’s a real need to move many people and there’s just no option yet.
This is why I sold my Taycan and bought a Tesla. I absolutely adored that car, but the charging anxiety and shenanigans were too much and affected my overall travel enjoyment. I don't see a quick way forward for CCS vehicles, other than to mooch off of Superchargers at some point. I think the other automakers are still waiting for the government to help fix their problem, rather than being proactive like Tesla in building out their infrastructure. Tesla is so far ahead in so many tangible and intangible ways.
I totally understand. I’m curious how much of your unhappiness was the crappy EA chargers and how much was the less than awesome real estate decisions by siting many of them at Walmart? Every time I plug in my EV6 and trudge into the Wally World I feel my soul get just slightly crushed. And I don’t imagine Taycan owners are voluntarily going there either except for EA’s charger locations.
Dave, you could have easily made it to Brunswick without the extra wait time. The calculation was probably based on battery pre-conditioning at 19 degrees. I would have unplugged at 250 mile range and removed the super charger as a destination. I've seen this on my Model Y as well. If you see that you are easily going to make it to the charger with 60 miles to go, then change the charger to your destination to begin the pre-conditioning process.
Merry Christmas
