Love the advice! I started playing with paints as a way to de stress from my job. Having a creative outlet is very rewarding for me, especially in these times of social distancing.
I see the most progress when I stretch and try something challenging. If it sucks, it's not like I have to show anyone, and sometimes it really does suck. But just often enough something really good happens and it keeps me going.
I'm a beginner and yes, I have a difficult time just attempting to try loose watercolor flowers... I'm determined not to "save" my good paper for when I improve - seriously, someone said that's like using your child's golf clubs until you improve! Duh!!! Started with better paper... 140 lb. Sage advice from a real expert. I'll bet it's even better than the person who asked expected. BTW you wondered what 'real' improvement was as opposed to fake. By 'real' I think the asker probably meant "significant'. Something more than just "use the best paints you can afford." Bigger ideas. You met that definition.
