Lifelong waterfowl hunter here. Will never not hunt with dogs. I was a guy who didn't agree with lion hunting specifically for the sake of the dogs. I've just always been under the impression that they get carelessly run into the ground during these hunts. These groups of people obviously don't do that. Some people may think the same of me when I have a black lab out on the river retrieving birds in 20 degree weather. I guess that made me a hypocrite of thinking the way I did about this. All hunting dogs work hard, but they would rather do that than sit on the couch. These all seem to be happy, healthy dogs. Quality story here. You just opened up a closed mind on lion hunting.
You sir are who we built the film for. Thank you for taking the time to comment and provide your changed perspective on hounds. So grateful for that! Please share this film with your community and friends that may have the same perspective that you had before watching it!
I got emotional within the first 5 minutes. It's hard to explain to someone who hasn't done it, just how special running dogs is. Thank you for doing all this work, shining a light on what a true Houndsmen is. I'm stuck to only running squirrel and fox in California but I long for the day to be able to run cats or lions again.
We hope so. We will know if it worked when everyone shows up to the polls on November 5th and votes no on proposition 127. If we win, then we will know the film had the intended impact.
I love my hounds, they love me. They love their jobs, I love working with them! This was a great watch. Thank you for sharing. There is nothing like the love of a hound!
I have been meaning to watch this for a while. Great film! The hunting community, whether lion, bear, deer elk, etc. needs more films like this. We are sick and tired of being vilified by people who simply do not understand what we do, why, and what it means to us, but also to wildlife conservation.
Great film. The emotion involved and love for the dogs is evident from the moment you press play. It also shows the work and dedication that it takes to be a houndsmen or women or hunter in general. Too many people do not understand the heart of a hunter or all the blood, sweat, tears...and money....that goes into a hunt. Hopefully many people will watch this so they can understand even a little bit.
Amazing athletes. Hounds, Mules, and Houndsmen. None of that’s easy. Traveling broken country is some of the most grueling work ever, and yet not work at all. Thank you for this video.
It was amazing the way the one dog went after that big cat on the steep rock ledges, then the rest of the dogs followed suit down his or her line after. Well done
This film was incredible. I was lucky that I got to spend the last ten years of California’s hound season with a great friend of mine it was extremely sad to have that taken away from us. I found such a great love and respect for those dogs it 100% to me is what hunting with hounds is mostly about. Outstanding job on this film. Of all the hound hunting videos this one will do more than any of those combined for the good of the sport. Hopefully it will shed light on and extremely important piece to the North American conservation model.
As someone who has been out with a houndsman chasing lions I couldn't wait to see this film. Incredibly well done! Completely conveyed the essence of the why those folks do what they do. ❤️
That is what we hope to do with this film. There are lots of hunters that do not agree with hunting predators with dogs, and so we wanted to communicate to them as well as the hunt and what it constituted and how hard it actually is.
Excellent video. Brings back a lot of memories. Took 2 lions on foot with a friend who had dogs in Phantom Canyon in Colorado. One of those hunts was the most physically demanding hunt I've ever done and the only time I had significant hypothermia. Sliding down icy cliffs, climbing back up, only to follow the dogs back down to almost where we started. When all was said and done it was 20 hours of hard hiking through briars, creek bottoms, cliffs, snow drifts, etc... Cut 7 separate lion tracks and had to realign the dogs a few times, but in the end we got him. Then we had to pack him out. My water bottle in my backpack froze solid and my gloves frozen stiff. I live in Alaska and have been stuck on Nunivek hunting muskox for 5 days in a blizzard of -60 degrees. The lion hunt was colder even though only about -2 because my equipment wasn't up to par and I was physically spent. The 6 dogs were amazing and totally in their element. It is what they live for. But 3 years later, 1 was killed by a bear, 2 by lions, and 2 of heart worms. That is not a cheap or normal turn of events, but thats how it went down. I still keep the paper my daughter filled out in 3rd grade saying her favorite food was mountain lion eggrolls.
Best artistry yet, Robbie. Endless thanks to you, the houndsman families, and the staff at Blood Origins. Please, don't stop. Any of you. Blessings......
As a houndsman, we need to protect it. It's the thing they attack the most. I only run cottontail with beagles here in PA but always told my wife if I could do any hunt Id go west, on mules, following hounds into rugged country and put a 58 cal roundball into a big cat with the flintlock rifle I built. Glad to see a film helping to educate those unaware.
I use to run hounds for cat and bear in New Mexico. I hunted under a true houndsman. I learned more about the outdoors, animal behavior, tracking, people and myself in those years than all the years I’d hunted previously. When it comes to endurance, hard work, and time spent in the most incredible places on earth, there is nothing like hunting behind hounds. Hound hunting is also the most misunderstood form of hunting. Even other hunters throw shade at hound hunters. Until you’ve done it you have no idea how challenging and rewarding it is. This I can promise you, it ain’t like what you think it going to be like until you’ve done it.
I will be sharing this across all of our social media platforms. The world needs to know! Thank you guys/gals for sharing this lifestyle and type of conservation with the world. Much respect. God Bless!
Very well done piece. It is truly sad when a people's traditions and culture comes under attack by those who know nothing about it. On a more positive note I always enjoy watching working dogs doing what it is they love to do.
What a wonderful video to show the passion of a houndsman. I’m not one myself but went with some for my first bear here in Wisconsin. Hands down an amazing experience. More people should see this before they dad’s voted for silly law changes
Walkers are the Gnarliest dogs out there. We had one in North Idaho and he was stellar. We ended up gifting him to a hounds man that had lost a few dogs to wolf and it was traumatic to me cause I failed as an owner. I failed to understand the true nature of a magnificent hound. My boy went on as reported to be stellar and became leader of the pack. It was an honor caring for him during his first year but I literally had no clue what they need and that’s to hunt lions.
Beautiful showcase of this life. No matter what you choose to pursue in life ,If you have the passion like they do , your rewards are all the memories and sacrifices you make to pursue your success. This was a rewarding film to see.
Amazing film! Such a great look behind the scenes of what a houndsman is! Definitely opened my eyes to how vital houndsmen to wildlife! I didn’t realize the division of wildlife got most of their studies from the work you guys do!
Thank you! Yes this was a big element of the film - how much lion Houndsmen help with mountain lion research all across the west. Without them not much is done.
Amazing! Got to watch this with my kids and explain the importance of hunting apex predators and what role it plays. The anti hunting community thinks they won but the fact that more lions are being killed by the government in Cali vs hound hunting is eye opening. They don’t care about the actual animal, they just don’t like hunters. And we as hunters actually care more for the animals we hunt more than anyone else
Beautiful country, full of beautiful people. This is a fantastic insight into a different way of life. I’m in Australia…. everything I love about the USA.
@@BloodOrigins I will. I did predator control with hounds from 1987 until 2009 , jackal and caracal and many leopard. Perhaps my son can pick up where I left off. By some stroke of luck he may find another opportunity in the US to do what he was born to do. Natural horseman and grew up with hounds.
One of the things that animal rights activist, and others who are trying to ban hounds & hunting in general, is the role that houndsmen & hunters play in conservation efforts. We love our sport, or more accurately our lifestyle. We love nature, we are the ones who actually live in this world as a part of this world. Without the efforts of outstanding people like the ones in this video, we couldn’t have the understanding of the animals as we do and what it takes to maintain a balance between humans & the animals we all want to protect. If you think these people don’t love the lions, you are sorely mistaken.
@@TORROREV there’s a spot in this video where the lady explains that there have been more lions killed since they outlawed hunting them with hounds by government contract than there ever were when there was still a season. I understand what you’re saying about eating the game we kill, but in the case of large predators such as mountain lions it also becomes important to balance the ecosystem. Hound hunters don’t always kill the lion, and hunting them in such a way instills a healthy fear of humans & dogs that is beneficial to both the lion and people. The only time a lion should be killed in my opinion is if the population is becoming more than the ecosystem can support and to protect human lives.
@@ArkieBluedogT yeah, you're right. But lions are less dangerous than bears or even wolves, and talking about cattle; they are lot of ways to mantain the Lions away. @@TORROREV that’s not exactly true either. While yes there are more bear attacks in the USA than lion, bear usually only attack when people get too close and they feel threatened. Great video!! 💯 Regulations are now being forced on this and trapping in Texas. While these regulations are minimal at the moment, as most of the west knows, it’s a foot in the door for more to follow!
That's it is a natural instinct for a Hound to Hunt. They can't help themselves. People don't understand that until you see it firsthand when they are a pup.

Put together very well.
Well done Robbie! 👏
Great video!! 💯 Regulations are now being forced on this and trapping in Texas. While these regulations are minimal at the moment, as most of the west knows, it’s a foot in the door for more to follow!

Here's to the houndsmen!
Agreed!
That's it is a natural instinct for a Hound to Hunt. They can't help themselves. People don't understand that until you see it firsthand when they are a pup.
Gorgeous footage and color grading.
Well done
No one from Idaho in the film? Bummer. Great film, guys.
