- Sulfur dioxide was one of the first air pollutants to cause widespread concern and one of the first to be measured. In the past, SO2, in combination with smoke, was responsible for many of the air pollution disasters, including the infamous London smog of 1952. It can cause health problems on its own, in combination with smoke or in the form of sulfate aerosol. Furthermore, SO2 is a precursor of sulfuric acid which is a major contributor to acid rain. It can also corrode stone, metals and other building materials, as well as having a direct effect on vegetation.
Major source of SO2 are coal and oil fired power stations, smelters, sulfuric acid manufacturing plants and diesel powered vehicles. Monitoring of ambient SO2 is routinely carried out by government agencies at many urban sites. Absorption of SO2 into a reagent solution followed by subsequent chemical analysis is a standard method of measurement.
