- Y Wal, or, "The Wall", was the most SCENIC and THRILLING single track MTB trail I have ridden in my life. Fast, gnarly and techy descents combined with some strangely enjoyable climbs!

I startet my mountain biking journey many years ago on these..., on a hardtail with no working suspension 😂 hence always close to my heart, absoluty fantastic trails. Mind, tree felling has been heartbreaking and trails have changed but what's left is amazing!
I use to ride it on a Cube Acid hardtail with 100mm up front and it was fine if a bit bumpy! Top trail.....
I’ve done that on a hard tail with shit forks. I was a lot younger and fitter but don’t get hung up on kit.
That's great mate! It's a fair point. Perhaps I should have advised to take it slow, as opposed to not giving it a go. Just felt like on some of the descents the rockiness really threw me about and you do NOT wanna go off the side on some of those trails 😅
As a hardtail rider with average fitness, Y Wal is fine. Some of the climbs are long but manageable and apart from one of the descents on Whites Level, I've never found it particularly rough. Stage 4 and Six feet Under require a bit of skill and commitment to get down. They're more steep and technical rather than fast and gnarly, but the hardtail was never the limiting factor.
Fair enough! I've never ridden this type of terrain before, I personally found it very gnarly. Of course, everyone's subjective experience will be different, that's just how I found it. The long travel 29er I'm riding is much more capable on this type of terrain than shorter travel bikes/hard tails, but of course you could still ride it on those kinds of bikes! I do state at the end of the video that point is more open for debate. I simply recommend if this is the type of bike you ride just to be more careful which is a fair evaluation considering the steepness of the hills you could potentially roll off! And of course another thing to consider is rider ability. Experienced riders aren't going to regard what I have to say too seriously, or let it be a determining factor as to whether they decide to give Y Wal a go or not. I'm sure the footage itself would be more of an influencing factor.
Afan was my first proper dive in Mtb went for a full week with 4 friends and had the best time ever. We left Whites levels for the last day. That was a mistake.
Another great video James. I have been to Afan a few times with the lads but am taking my 15 year old son in a few weeks, then hitting BPW on the way back. You have really got me exciting about it!
Thank you! 😊 Afan was some of the best riding I've ever done and I'm dying to get back there soon.
Mate that will be totally epic! Hope you and your son have the best time! 🤘
The trail is effin awesome!!! I LOVE IT!! Your friend here watching from Manila, Philippines!
Glad you enjoyed it mate!👍
Great video! Tune and trail combo at 06:00 was mint. You need to get to Lake District, Whinlatter views and trail are epic!
Thanks man!😀 yes I would 100% love to explore up in the Lake District 😍 it’s on my to visit list!
Yes bro I finally got around to doing this yesterday. Absolutely amazing route to do - A LOT of climbing but the descents and scenery make it absolutely worth it. You weren’t wrong about needing to be fit either, really tough at times and my legs were locking out around half way through - but I’m not particularly bike fit atm. But yeah couldn’t recommend this enough for anyone who wants a VERY scenic challenge.
The scenery and descents are unbelievable aren’t they! Well worth the pedal, a proper good challenge 😛 glad you enjoyed it mate
did this yesterday straight after blue scar and penhydd, was v difficult as i was already tired but i got round it and the views were great!!! never ridden anything like this before and i wish id done it before the other two to properly appreciate the trail
That’s a hell of a lot of riding for one day, wow!🥵 I felt the fatigue in my legs just on this trail alone haha! I was the same, this trail was the first of its type for me and I loved it. The scenery and exploratory nature of it is 👌
Love the music
Bit of liquid d&b, love it
mate this looks the nuts
Some of the best riding I've ever done!
Might go here on the way to bike park wales this year, looks so sick
I highly recommend it mate! 👊
Nice one mate, looking to do this soon. Do you know the name of the car park you used?
Type in “Afan Forest mountain bike trails” on Google maps and it’ll take you straight there! FYI, some of Afans other trails (such as whites level) start at “Glyncorrwg Ponds mountain bike centre”. They’re 5 miles apart.
@@JamesLonngren Thanks for the heads up mate. Keep the content coming, big up.
