Blake is one of the reasons I love this channel so much. Who would ever thought of that suit for aerodynamics?? Great experiment for sure. Nice chuckle to start 2022.
7:52 Ironic that Neil justifies banning skinsuits on the basis of enhancing the marketability of the sport, when the late 90s/early 00s skinsuit era represented the peak of mainstream exposure and outside sponsorship in the sport for a long time.
Yes, cheating is faster! One of our local Strava KOM's was set on a 125cc scooter! A question though. I don't race, so was wondering if it's okay to cut corners on single tracks, so long as it's inside the tape (where there is tape)?
John Tomac the legend that used to run a Tioga disc drive, remember seeing him racing XC with at Strathpuffer back in the 90’s and always thought it was so cool
I love that at 8:03 when talking about the skin suits not being marketable, the background guy in orange nods in your direction and they start to laugh.
Recumbents are kind of lethal for anyone ahead of you in a peleton as you're heading chainring first into every crash with all you weight braced against the chainring (Or you get neutered if you clip out and your body keeps going forward after the bike stops. Recumbents are also lethal anywhere there's traffic as you're completely below the sight lines from any car you're near and it's not like drivers look where they're going particularly carefully in the first place. Allowing them for triathlons, time trials and hillclimbs (They'd be useless on hillclimbs unless the gradient was very gentle though) where drafting isn't allowed, would be a good way to get them in and see how people like them. Unbunched recumbents are almost certainly still slower than a tight peleton over 100's of km though if there are people who rode tour stages on recumbents and beat the times the pro's did that would be very cool. Recumbent also give no option to hop over kerbs or other obstacles you suddenly find in your way, and this is, I think, the fundamental reason the UCI has banned them, along with a lot of the dodgier aero positions.
Friend of mine won a series of ultra endurance races on a recumbent after breaking his wrists. AFTER winning the series, his bike was banned. Each race had like 10,000' of climbing. There was also a silly rule about road bikes not having disc brakes because they were dangerous.
I’m not good enough to break the rules, I can make much bigger improvements to my riding through fitness and practice than by breaking rules. Lol if I was at a point where breaking rules changed my performance by a bigger margin than just additional practice , I’d be pretty happy with myself!
Tioga disc drive would be a disc wheel for mountain biking lol (although the concept wasn’t intended for aero) Spinergy had their 4 spoke aero mountain wheels though.
A fairing around the front wheel could actually make a quite significant difference, keep those knobby tyres out of the headwind. But I don't think it's that easy to build one that withstands the shaking and doesn't add too much unsprung mass. But actually, I think I'll give it a try: what do I have that 3D printer for! If it doesn't help with aero, it'll still serve as a mudguard...
I really hate to say this...especially as i have nothing but high respect for Neil and Blake.....but....im pretty certain Blake was cheating at multiple points during this video. Yet even more shockingly, i have seen evidence suggesting that Neil might have been riding under the influence of caffeine. Combined with recurring rumors that both of them actually OWN and RIDE ELECTRIC-mtbs....(aka Ebikes) i dont know what to think now.
Yeah, it's pretty sad, isn't it? But I'm sure they did it for a noble cause that required the extra speed. Like, perhaps they were trying to get away from evil policemen chasing after them, who wanted to steal the precious chemicals that Blake had stowed under his skinsuit. I mean, those were important, he had to sell them to some teenagers who really need such chemicals!
The helmet peak makes sense. From an analytical standpoint, no peak will certainly be faster. it may be an incredibly small amount, but it is there. Since the sport is highly competitive, peaks just wouldn't be an option. That would suck for riders
Does anybody know why you have to have a peak on the helmet? I just know it from Motocross where it makes sense because of the dirt flying around from other riders but that's not really the reason in cycling or is it?!
This is frustrating, by doing the times on different days you just null and void the whole experiment... why not get changed and take the stuff off the bike and do another run on the same day?
Ffffffff ... I use bar ends ... and I will never change in my 26 ride and classic ride, the bars are narrow (I use 560 to 620mm) and you need more position to climb. It is simply more confortable. And nobody told me that they are baned in races ... 😵
Should have hoovered some schneef instead. As an interesting side note, cannabis was specifically banned for DH racers but not for any other cycling discipline back in the '90s.
I remember seeing racers in World Cup races with skin suits helmets with no peak etc around 2000. The glory years before rules made things lame in loads of sports not just mtb…
“Drugs? I’ve just bought £200 quids worth” 😂🤣😂

Soooo good 🤣
😅

Blake is mental without drugs, can you imagine how off tap he'd be with performance enhancing drugs? (or even just some molly lol)
I remember this argument back in the day (before the ban)
"The science is real - skin suits are faster"
"Yeah but i'm still not wearing one" 😂
They haven't exactly become a fashion trend 😅
When mountain biking rises to the level of road racing, everyone will have skin suits. Performance is king.
XC racers do wear skin suits haha
@@gmbn Maybe after this video, Blake might be successful in making then a top fashion item :)
What they've managed to do with the current clothing is pretty good though - definitely tight and aero, but still looks acceptable.
Blake is one of the reasons I love this channel so much. Who would ever thought of that suit for aerodynamics?? Great experiment for sure. Nice chuckle to start 2022.
GMBN did this exact experiment years ago already
Everybody had thought about it. That's why DH kit is as tight fitting as legally possible.

Isn't called a"french line" when you cut corners inside the tape? 😉
All KOM's in my area are set by faulty GPS devices.
Yes but it might not be faster. You can usually carry more momentum if you hit the berm instead of cutting.
Is that you Richie?
Blake is always ready to make it interesting in the name of #GMBN and science. But mostly science.

Yeh but I'm sure he didn't buy them for the express purpose of cheating in a bike race
I love that at 8:03 when talking about the skin suits not being marketable, the background guy in orange nods in your direction and they start to laugh.
Blake looks like fresh from the 90s speed record attempts on ski slopes.
It's definitely inspired by skiing in the old days! 😅

To be honest, a lot of the rules the UCI impose on sports are holding back bicycles outside of sports. The ban on recumbents being a huge one.
Recumbents are kind of lethal for anyone ahead of you in a peleton as you're heading chainring first into every crash with all you weight braced against the chainring (Or you get neutered if you clip out and your body keeps going forward after the bike stops. Tioga disc drive would be a disc wheel for mountain biking lol (although the concept wasn’t intended for aero) Spinergy had their 4 spoke aero mountain wheels though.
When will GMBN try recumbents and fairings? Why not add fairings to your upright bikes?
A fairing around the front wheel could actually make a quite significant difference, keep those knobby tyres out of the headwind. But I don't think it's that easy to build one that withstands the shaking and doesn't add too much unsprung mass.

Just attach a throttle hub motor to the back wheel, pretty sure that’ll make accelerating after corners faster

When the video isnt an blatant ploy to sell you shit this channel actually makes some enjoyable content.
For tech nerds like me the video's about new products aren't bad either. When you don't care about tech it's a different story off course.
Surprised they didn’t do the Tomac style drops, but I wouldn’t want to take a big squish drop bar bike on big trails like that.

I just know it from Motocross where it makes sense because of the dirt flying around from other riders but that's not really the reason in cycling or is it?!
I would think it’s because it slows the impact a little when you smash your face into the ground. Maybe idk though

Spikes make you faster in situations where races are cancelled due to UCI's extreme whether protocol.
