- The UCI are the governing body in charge of setting the rules for all sorts of cycling racing, from cyclocross and road to 4x and downhill. From strict guidelines on how much coffee can be consumed before a competition to the banning of skin suits and other aerodynamic advantages, there are some stringent rules, but are they limiting our sport? Neil and Blake broke some rules at Bikepark Wales in order to find out!

“Drugs? I’ve just bought £200 quids worth” 😂🤣😂
😂😂
Soooo good 🤣
😅
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Blake is mental without drugs, can you imagine how off tap he'd be with performance enhancing drugs? (or even just some molly lol)
I remember this argument back in the day (before the ban)
"The science is real - skin suits are faster"
"Yeah but i'm still not wearing one" 😂
They haven't exactly become a fashion trend 😅
When mountain biking rises to the level of road racing, everyone will have skin suits. Performance is king.
XC racers do wear skin suits haha
@@gmbn Maybe after this video, Blake might be successful in making then a top fashion item :)
What they've managed to do with the current clothing is pretty good though - definitely tight and aero, but still looks acceptable.
Blake is one of the reasons I love this channel so much. Who would ever thought of that suit for aerodynamics?? Great experiment for sure. Nice chuckle to start 2022.
GMBN did this exact experiment years ago already
Everybody had thought about it. That's why DH kit is as tight fitting as legally possible.
7:52 Ironic that Neil justifies banning skinsuits on the basis of enhancing the marketability of the sport, when the late 90s/early 00s skinsuit era represented the peak of mainstream exposure and outside sponsorship in the sport for a long time.
Neil: Today we are cheating
Blake: Drugs!, I’ve just bought £200 quids worth
Blake's ready to blast the gear
I laughed so hard at that
Roadies are wrong'uns and I've just bought £200 worth of drugs 😂😂
Yeh but I'm sure he didn't buy them for the express purpose of cheating in a bike race
Blake's a legend, that morph suit, i laughed my arse off.
No need for a seat and dropper post on your bike now 😉
He looks like the lego astronaut
Yes, cheating is faster! One of our local Strava KOM's was set on a 125cc scooter!
A question though.
I don't race, so was wondering if it's okay to cut corners on single tracks, so long as it's inside the tape (where there is tape)?
😂👌
Isn't called a"french line" when you cut corners inside the tape? 😉
All KOM's in my area are set by faulty GPS devices.
Yes but it might not be faster. You can usually carry more momentum if you hit the berm instead of cutting.
Is that you Richie?
Blake is always ready to make it interesting in the name of #GMBN and science. But mostly science.
Blake looks like fresh from the 90s speed record attempts on ski slopes.
It's definitely inspired by skiing in the old days! 😅

To be honest, a lot of the rules the UCI impose on sports are holding back bicycles outside of sports. The ban on recumbents being a huge one.
Recumbents are kind of lethal for anyone ahead of you in a peleton as you're heading chainring first into every crash with all you weight braced against the chainring (Or you get neutered if you clip out and your body keeps going forward after the bike stops. Recumbents are also lethal anywhere there's traffic as you're completely below the sight lines from any car you're near and it's not like drivers look where they're going particularly carefully in the first place.
Allowing them for triathlons, time trials and hillclimbs (They'd be useless on hillclimbs unless the gradient was very gentle though) where drafting isn't allowed, would be a good way to get them in and see how people like them. Unbunched recumbents are almost certainly still slower than a tight peleton over 100's of km though if there are people who rode tour stages on recumbents and beat the times the pro's did that would be very cool. Recumbent also give no option to hop over kerbs or other obstacles you suddenly find in your way, and this is, I think, the fundamental reason the UCI has banned them, along with a lot of the dodgier aero positions.
@@peglor bro I think he was being sarcastic about the UCI holding mountain bikers back by not allowing recumbents
@@jackandeson6302 He never mentioned mountain bikes at all.
Friend of mine won a series of ultra endurance races on a recumbent after breaking his wrists. AFTER winning the series, his bike was banned. Each race had like 10,000' of climbing.
There was also a silly rule about road bikes not having disc brakes because they were dangerous.
John Tomac the legend that used to run a Tioga disc drive, remember seeing him racing XC with at Strathpuffer back in the 90’s and always thought it was so cool
Blakes been Tango'd
Blake always takes things over the top and I love it! 😂
24s at the back and 26s at the front clad in Tioga Factory DH tyres that only just cleared the frame. Those were the days
Blake is so funny!! keep it up guys
Thanks for the support!!
wow this video was soooo good. I which you did more downhill-race related stuff :)
Holy shit when Blake first showed up with the mods I laughed hard.
'today we are cheating responsibly' ........ Classic 🤙
Great video! Very entertaining, I can relate to Blake...😂
Brilliant vide guis keep it up!!!
Just wow dope episode i love it
One of my favourite videos yet 😂😂 cheers lads
Neil: Cheating the UCI rules
blake: D R U G S I just brought 200 quids worth
Nice episode! Thnx
Blake in a morph suite i laughed so hard i nearly peed myself
Nice Ragley mate! I got a yellow Enduro HT too but sadly not a Ragley.
@@kaedeschulz5422
I do love a ragley and nearly all hardtails more fun
@@andrewcrockford6151 Yea on trails that most ppl have close by a hardtail is Much more fun.
Did anyone else notice Tom Cardy and Kara Beal creeping in shot at 7.28 🤣
Good Spot!! Its a great little feature 😂
Great fun video 👌
I didn't know Neil used to be a professional DH racer, he's never mentioned it before 🤣
It's been mentioned before, he's done both pro DH and enduro
Yea it's awesome that GMBN has professionals on board!
@@mrvwbug4423 i believe this was sarcasm
Whoosh
Guess what, there are rumours that Dan from GCN has ridden for the Cervelo Test Team before he started drinking several bottles of mineral water.
🤣 great video Blake and Neil 👊
I knew if anyone was going to use a skin suit (well morph suit ) it would be Blake 🤣🤣🤣
Nice hardtail mate! What exactly is this bike?
@@kaedeschulz5422 Nukeproof Scout
@@the_spanner_ch7mp Awesome man! :D
@@kaedeschulz5422 cheers dude 🤘
@@the_spanner_ch7mp Can't wait till i get my Enduro HT! Currently gathering parts using a 2021 octane one sour frame
Blake is hilarious love this man no homo. ✌🏻😂🤙🏻
Ngl, Neil's bike looks pretty sick with that disc wheel!
Love ur channel
u gotta love the GMBN comedy...lol
Only the best! 😂😅
Tioga disc drive would be a disc wheel for mountain biking lol (although the concept wasn’t intended for aero) Spinergy had their 4 spoke aero mountain wheels though.
Great vid gents 😂👏👏
Thanks for the support Darren!!🤟
It's like you forgot about the Toga disk drive wheel of the 90s that where out at the same time as the rev x rocks and god dam i wanted a set of them
0:40 had me in stitches lol
Subtitles please for the deaf thank you, for your goooood vid s.
I’m not good enough to break the rules, I can make much bigger improvements to my riding through fitness and practice than by breaking rules. Lol if I was at a point where breaking rules changed my performance by a bigger margin than just additional practice , I’d be pretty happy with myself!
The rule should be, dont put screws in your competition's tires !
Just attach a throttle hub motor to the back wheel, pretty sure that’ll make accelerating after corners faster
What helmets are you using in this video?
Come on - there is more rolling resistance when wet than dry
Neils bike looks like a speedway machine with that disc cover!
'the roadies...they're the wrong uns' 🤣😂
Was that guy in the orange jump suite on the Swiss bobsled team?
Surprised they didn’t do the Tomac style drops, but I wouldn’t want to take a big squish drop bar bike on big trails like that.
When the video isnt an blatant ploy to sell you shit this channel actually makes some enjoyable content.
For tech nerds like me the video's about new products aren't bad either. When you don't care about tech it's a different story off course.
The Flying Zimbo might be onto something with the saran wrapping your bike on muddy days.
I love that at 8:03 when talking about the skin suits not being marketable, the background guy in orange nods in your direction and they start to laugh.
Yeah that doesn't happen, dude in orange doesn't nod in their direction and his buddy with earphones in is already laughing at something.
Neil will soon be marketing a new line of "F***" wheels.
Does anybody know why you have to have a peak on the helmet?
I just know it from Motocross where it makes sense because of the dirt flying around from other riders but that's not really the reason in cycling or is it?!
I would think it’s because it slows the impact a little when you smash your face into the ground. Maybe idk though
What trail where they on?
13:11 is what I have fun whit...
Yes! 80´s MTB
What time was that clock counting. To slow for a second to fast for a minute
When will GMBN try recumbents and fairings? Why not add fairings to your upright bikes?
A fairing around the front wheel could actually make a quite significant difference, keep those knobby tyres out of the headwind. But I don't think it's that easy to build one that withstands the shaking and doesn't add too much unsprung mass.
But actually, I think I'll give it a try: what do I have that 3D printer for! If it doesn't help with aero, it'll still serve as a mudguard...
Oh guys I was there last year was awesome 👌
Bit of a 2 finger salute to Richie Rude?😂
The helmet peak makes sense. From an analytical standpoint, no peak will certainly be faster. it may be an incredibly small amount, but it is there. Since the sport is highly competitive, peaks just wouldn't be an option. That would suck for riders
"they all cheat?"..."well all the roadies basically" 😂
'Cheating responsibly' - Neil 2022
😂
Spikes make you faster in situations where races are cancelled due to UCI's extreme whether protocol.
Bro im a fan form philippines
Every rule has it's story.......i would like to hear those haha
Blake looks like an astronaut so I expect he flys like a rocket ship!
say hello to John Tomac and the Tiagra "disc" wheels
This is frustrating, by doing the times on different days you just null and void the whole experiment... why not get changed and take the stuff off the bike and do another run on the same day?
Tests are spaced by three weeks???
most of these rules are for safety not speed 😂 love it though
that’s how we dressed in the 90s lol. my buddy at 16 was shaving his legs to try to go faster.
How times have changed! Thank you for the support!
Blake: I just bought £200 worth of....
Me: Yup. That's devil lettuce lol
Should have hoovered some schneef instead. As an interesting side note, cannabis was specifically banned for DH racers but not for any other cycling discipline back in the '90s.
@@peglor Oh interesting. Perhaps so as they wouldn't be too out of it and risk injury I guess.
@@thewaywardgrape3838 More because it helps keep them calm and smooth. I think it got banned in snooker for similar reasons.
skin type suit, faster huh, I can imagine it covered with sponsors tags and racing stripes.
Whhere is Blakes aero rear triangle???
The Tango Orange Man (look it up if you don't know) can sure ride a bike.
Are 26 inch wheels banned or something?
Got any drugs left over Blake 🤣🤣🤣
No drop bars, no spikes, no caffeine overdose... Missed opportunity.
I remember John Tomac using a disk wheel.
Mmm, Tioga Disc Drive! Used to make a hell of a sound those things 😍
the disc wheel attaché is always so dubious for me. imagine just rattling that off and the chainsuck oof
It's definitely not a permanent object! Good for an experimental run but that's about all it lasts for 😂
*Homer Simpson fade away into bushes*
Blake reminds me of stupid sexy Flanders from that one time the Simpsons went skiing and Flanders wore a skinsuit
I remember seeing racers in World Cup races with skin suits helmets with no peak etc around 2000. The glory years before rules made things lame in loads of sports not just mtb…
Flying Zimbo Rules! Next one should be The Gwai River Roller and you have to dress like an Appo ;-)
Blake definitely smoked his 200 quids worth before showing up in that morph suit.
Is that tinky winky shredding?
I’d say ask Richie if it was faster 😅
Very nice vídeo. The 90`s downhill stile clothes remembering Philippe Perakis 😊. I want one rear disc wheel like this for my trail bike😍🥰
Ffffffff ... I use bar ends ... and I will never change in my 26 ride and classic ride, the bars are narrow (I use 560 to 620mm) and you need more position to climb. It is simply more confortable. And nobody told me that they are baned in races ... 😵
Ye
I spend way to much on my mtb.. But hey,, dont we just love getting out there.. Soaked, cold, windy.. BRING IT 🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲
That's great Simon! We feel exactly the same! Just getting out riding and having fun is what we mountain bikers all live for! 👊
@@gmbn cool.. That I agree on.. Sometimes I want the bad weather.. Although sucks when it appears.. Happy riding all 🚲🚲🚲🚲
Haha Blake is a good comedian
The tight suit may be faster I wouldn't wear any thing like that, it looks terrible, well done Blake brave man just wearing that!
I can't get over the fast as f***! Wheel xD brilliant
Science class should just be replaced by GMBN for the kids with all these super scientific experiments lol
6:51 " oh ye bastard"?
Look. Kenny is in GMBN.
Okay Blakes drug joke is legit very funny
Neil is running dork disk pro
I really hate to say this...especially as i have nothing but high respect for Neil and Blake.....but....im pretty certain Blake was cheating at multiple points during this video. Yet even more shockingly, i have seen evidence suggesting that Neil might have been riding under the influence of caffeine. Combined with recurring rumors that both of them actually OWN and RIDE ELECTRIC-mtbs....(aka Ebikes) i dont know what to think now.
Yeah, it's pretty sad, isn't it?
But I'm sure they did it for a noble cause that required the extra speed.
Like, perhaps they were trying to get away from evil policemen chasing after them, who wanted to steal the precious chemicals that Blake had stowed under his skinsuit. I mean, those were important, he had to sell them to some teenagers who really need such chemicals!
