      The Scorpions are criminally under appreciated despite how big they became. There is a whole world of truly amazing compositions and they could write a good song for the radio too. That's a rare force, but I feel they get lumped into the "hair metal" group unfairly.

    I hear no similarities personally, but this song is older anyway. More 70's Scorpions to try:
    Fly to the Rainbow, Far Away, Living and Dying, in Trance, Drifting Sun, Yellow Raven, Riot of Our Time. I could list every track on their 70's albums, but I'll leave it there for now.

The live tv appearance video of this one is fun. A couple of my (and everyone's) favorite Scorpions tunes are Still Loving You & No One Like You. If you haven't reacted to those, they're worth it. It's so sad that most people don't know early Scorpions. When a layperson thinks of Scorpions its Wind of change, Hurricane, No One Like You, Still loving you, of which are great songs. I feel that if they had been an English or American band, they would be the best band of all time honestly . 200+ songs, 19 albums, 100 million sold, almost 60 years making music, I don't think anyone took a German band serious in the early 70s. It was 20+ years after WWII, maybe nobody cared about "Kraut Rock". I met a guitar player today who was a session musician for bands like The Guess Who etc, and I asked him if he knew who Uli Jon Roth is and he said he never heard of him. I was like WTF?????? Don't even get me started on The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which is a joke also.

    Back then, the sound of twin guitars playing harmonies was getting quite popular all over Europe and the States. But yeah, Uli Roth was sort of a cult hero for most pro metal guitarists of the 80's. And with time he even got better at guitar.
    And then, after 2000 or so, Uli Roth somehow got better at guitar and released some very interesting music or just straight out playing show off classical pieces on the guitar.

    Maybe it's just that Euro sound you're hearing. Scorpions is a much older band, I'd be amazed of Maiden wasn't influenced by them at least in some ways.
    They both came to the states in the "New wave of British heavy metal" - yes the scorpions are German, and had been successful in Europe for a lot longer, but they were still sort of lumped into that NWOBHM influence.

    Well Maiden were influenced a lot by certain elements of proggy neoclassical metal/rock from the 70s, mainly by likes of Ritchie Blackmore (guitarist of Deep Purple and Rainbow, both bands that influenced Maiden, among others)
    And the two greatest neoclassical guitarists of the 70s are Ritchie Blackmore and Uli Jon Roth (The Scorpions guitarist at this time of Sails of Charon).
    Uli himself has said in an interview that a minor inspiration for this song was Rainbow's "Gates of Babylon" where Blackmore was the guitarist and Ronnie James Dio was on the vocals, so you can imagine why it's an epic track. It should also be said that Dio was a big influence on many metal vocalists including Klaus Meine (Scorpions) and even more so Bruce Dickinson (our boy from Maiden)
    I'd strongly recommend checking out Gates of Babylon and Stargazer by Rainbow. They were effectively the pioneers of neoclassical, dungeons & dragons themed metal as we know it today in the form of genres such as power metal. A genre that Maiden heavily contributed to in the 80s, despite not being classified as a true "power metal band".
    You've heard Deep Purple, Dio and Iron Maiden, and Dio-era Rainbow is like the ultimate middle ground between all three. (I say Dio-era because the first three Rainbow albums were sung by Dio and then he left the band and joined Black Sabbath)
    P.S. Sorry for going on a tirade, but at least it's some (hopefully) interesting information! 🤘🤘🤘

    • @sergejmiladinovic1181
      @sergejmiladinovic1181 3 года назад +1

      @Angie Barclay I vaguely remember Klaus saying he took inspiration from Dio's singing in Rainbow on how he could easily implement and switch between softer ballad type vocals (Catch the Rainbow, Rainbow Eyes, Temple of the King) and heavier, more powerful vocals (Stargazer, Man on the Silver Mountain, Kill the King and such). But I could very much be wrong on that.
      Uli, however, has stated (whether or not he listened to rock) that he took some subtle inspiration from Gates of Babylon for his Sails of Charon, when it comes to incorporating Mediterranean and Middle Eastern scales into a song and making it into some type of mystical epic.

    I feel that the songs to be compared and contrast is that they both have an intensity feel, I play the Sails of Charon on the guitar, I feel it is more of an eastern style of scale. Hollow be they named starts with a more somber type of melody because the inmate is about to face his demise. Both songs have been staples in my life. I did time in the county jail at 16. I believe the resemblance you found between this and the maiden song is probably in the rhythm. They both have "I-IIi-III-IIi-III-IIi..." . "I" is strong hit, "i" weaker hit, "-" is pause. In the maiden song mainly the drums produce that rhythm along with the bass, in the Scorps the drums and the guitar in a more funky way. Let me know if that was the case, I 'm curious. Thanks for the cool video.

    The Scorpions introduced Americans to Getman folk music in the form of hard rock/metal. This tune is influenced by Bavarian folk tunes.

    Excellent reaction and great song! There is a great cover of this by Yngwie Malmsteen. There are some similarities in those riffs, different but similar

      I was going to say this also - one of the best covers of this song. Yngwie does a lot
      of fantastic covers.

    Uli Roth on lead guitar, Rudolf Shenker on rhythm, Herman 'More' Rarebell on drums (jk)
    Frances Buchholz on bass, and of course, Klaus Meine on vocals. I was gonna recommended this, looks like some a-hole beat me to it, anyway, you should have listened to World Wide Live first.
    There's another '80's metal band' from Germany that you need to hear, their name is "Accept". I would start with;
    Accept - Metal Heart /,,/ !

    I can tell you got some good taste, at least until you said it sounds like Iron Maiden. No true metal head could associate the two.

    At first I thought, why haven't I been listening to scorpions all these years, then the singing started and I now know why.

      The first album with Michael Schenker was pretty stellar too.
