I remember playing as Sagat with my siblings in Street Fighter Alpha 3, they got so mad at me for spamming his fireballs, when quite often I was throwing them by accident while trying to do his Tiger Uppercut. I had a similar problem with Ryu when I tried to use the Shoryuken at times.
I'm not sure if Vega is still soft banned, but Sagat is for sure. I think the difference is that Vega has to score a knockdown to kill you, where Sagat just kill most of the cast for free
Old sagat was not softbanned for being too powerful, but because a good chunk of the game's cast was completely inviable against him. Things were just more fun without Old Sagat.
Old Sagat is so broken that it was soft banned in Japan (hard bans were rare in Japan). People who used Old Sagat were usually considered mediocre players and laughed at for picking a character that was clearly imbalanced from any point of view.
I did a lot of AI testing in SF4 (it's what I tend to most enjoy doing in fighting games, I'm unusual like that... which is why I don't get any that you can't do CPU vs CPU in) and it's interesting from this list to see how much of a threat Elena is, because from my tests she's super low-tier, so I guess the computer must just play her really, exceptionally badly.
I think we'll have a new character every month until the last one before EVO, then perhaps a new DLC with new characters and maybe new mode (cinematic part 2 or arcade) with a lot of old classic characters like Sagat, Sakura, etc...
For people asking as to why SFV Chun is a dominant character. I would like to bring up that she is the most represented character in 2016's CapCup with six players using her. Chun-Li @ CapCup: MOV, Go1, Sako, Tse4444, Ricki Ortiz, CCL
Great list! I always appreciate when people can explain why a character is overpowered. I've learned things here and there from personal experience, but having more perspective and explanation helps the community as a whole, which I can appreciate. Thank you and please do more lists!
Sagat was also beast in Capcom vs SNK series. He's always been one of my go to characters to just rip folks apart, him and Cammy. My friend has SF V and always talks about how hard it is for him because of how much they changed on how the characters work from past games, so I go in with Cammy my first time playing and just rip through survival mode on normal out the gate after watching him struggle on the difficulty. His comment watching was "My god, she's everywhere."
No single character should be able to heal. She should at BEST get white life back instead of real life, like she absorbed a huge amount of damage with a focus attack, then has to wait for it to fill. But her hit box needed fixed, there are so many glitches where she can just FADC and complete her dash and switch sides like she's Ibuki. Like, she had the hit box of the smaller characters, like Gen, Yun, Yang, Cammy, but she's like Bison's size.
Street fighter 3 3rd strike chun-li should've been number 1. She's by far the most overpowered character in street fighter. She's more powerful than the banned boss characters you left out of the list.
LOL. That's what the link shows. The players that are in the Capcom cup. But now that I know you don't know what you're talking about I know I can ignore you completely, thanks :D
she isnt dominating shit, not in tournament neither online, scrubs always need a character to hate on to not face the fact that they just sucks, if chun wasnt on the game, people would be bitching about necalli or nash etc...
I guess people exaggerate sometimes, but if you look at the top placements, there's always a healthy amount of Chun-Li players spreaded throughout the list. I like to say that there's some characters that are "gatekeepers": although they're not really winning at the end - by "winning" meaning getting 1st place - they hold everybody off and defeat them up to a certain tier. In my opinion that's what's happening to Chun-Li in SFV and that's why some people _feel_ that she's dominating and overpowered.
How is SFV Chun li dominating when she has yet to win a single Capcom Pro Tour Premier event? As a matter of fact, the highest ever placement by a Chun Li player is Go1 getting 3rd at Shanghai. As for Mov and Sako, their highest placement at a Premier event is 5th and 4th respectively. There has been a total of 12 premier events this year. Ryu and Necalli both won 3, Nash and Cammy each won 2, Ken and Mika each won one. Furthermore, grand finals of EVO 2016 was between Nash and Mika. Please explain how Chun Li is dominating.
Because she has a high win rate and is kinda being a gatekeeper to lower tier characters or worse players in general btw high win rate doesn't mean they have to win the tournament chun li's win rate overall is quite high compared to many other characters
The best way to take down Sagat in SF2 Turbo is to use E. Honda. Be patient getting close to him, pin him up against the wall, and hundred hand slap the shit out of him. He'll keep trying to use a fireball, but isn't quick enough and he just keeps taking on more damage. I used to try to use ranged characters and throw fireballs, hoping to wear him down but it was too easy to misfire and get hit by one of his in a shoot out.
I kinda wish you went into more detail about the character's impact on the competitive scene. For example, Elena on your #9 slot wasn't really discovered until Infiltration pulled her out at EVO 2015 (I think) and then EVERYONE started keeping a pocket Elena. I realize this probably would've been more work on your part, both for research and script writing, but I think that's what I would've done if I was making the video. Feel free to disregard my ideas, if you find them crap, of course. :P
This is untrue. Vega is the best character in the "you can actually fight him" category of Super Turbo. Original/Old Sagat is in a tier all his own, considering about 70% of the cast can't even play the game when paired against him.
4:10 Alpha one was where I became a Guy fan, you could mix up attacks and throw off your opponent not knowing where the next hit was coming because of how fast he moved.
A lot of characters in SF3 are incredibly good if you know how to do insane juggles. Ryu has the easiest setup with EX Joudan Sokutogeri into close.lp xx dash loops, and he can literally timer stall you to death.
Street fighter 2 Guile was the cheeziest opponent ever. I remember him walking up to me and instant flash kick to the face. WTH? How do you charge down while moving forward?
Worst thing you didn’t mention with Bison / Vega in SF2 CE is his infinite blockstun scissor kick loop - it’s way more broken than the the Psycho Crusher! Just horrific.
The best tournament-legal character in ST is Claw and it's not even close. o. Sagat is strong, but he has his share of losing matchups with Claw and Dhalsim being especially difficult. Claw arguably has zero losing matchups.
I feel like some of your picks were right, some were just off, and some of the people, although correctly picked for being highly imbalanced, but for the wrong reasons. Chun-Li undoubtedly is very strong but definitely not broken. She has some really annoying gimmicks that don't really make sense, like same-side "cross-overs", very good normals, and one of the best v-triggers in the game. But she is hardly dominating the scene, let's be real. Have you even seen the pro scene? You nailed Champ Bison. You rightly declared Second Impact Sean, but hardly showed why. Got Guile pretty good. Genei-Jin wasn't even a reason Yun was considered broken in SSF4:AE so I don't know why you're talking about it. You didn't even cover Meaty-palms into ultra for 450-500 damage on people after a grab stun / stun reset. There are far worse fights than between a god damn Elena, SFV Chun, or ST Sagat. Where's the Alpha 3 Sakura, the CVS2 Blanka / Sagat / Paint-the-fence bison? I smell an 09'er
You can include Ken/Ryu from the original Street FIghter 2 along with your choice of Guile with the crazy redizzy combo. The thing is that Ken/Ryu's is even easier to pull off a redizzy since all you needed to do was a hurricane kick when your opponent was dizzy. The 3 hits of the kick would cause the redizzy. Rinse and repeat.
I remember learning Guy's infinite loop in Street Fighter Alpha... It is a glitch, but if you do it right you can own the round. Use light punch a lot, then input heavy kick into Bushin Senpukyaku (Quarter circle backwards, light kick) then immediately input a forward dash (forward 2 times) before he gets that high into the air and repeat. If you really want to, you can use a super combo, but it ruins the loop. It's a glitch like I said and it's actually very hard to pull off. This is what allowed me to solo the whole arcade mode (except big body characters, their hurtboxes are different and difficult) with *(MOSTLY)* perfect wins.
no way was Elena more overpowered than Evil Ryu, nor as dominating. But I guess you cant diss the golden boy of the franchise... the fact that Akuma wasnt included either makes me assume you're a shoto fanboy
andreskizzo in the last 6 moths of ultra elena was considered higher than evil ryu but because the game was coming to the end she wasn't fully explored in time to be first place in any tournament
whateverni you must not have played high level sf4 during the final months she was easily top 3 gamer bee probably would have taken the the top spots or evo but sfv came out your knowledge of the game isn't up to speed
Looking back I can agree with the Boxer statement but not Claw. ST Claw vortex is extremely difficult to stop for characters that had options against it and everyone else just called it quits after the first izuna drop.
>Elena in USF4 she has never been in top because she isnt, she is annoying but once you know the matchup it can get pretty rough for her, especially the twins and seth give her super duper trouble
JinTheAce is that why loads of top players switched to her? Gamerbee dropped Adon for her, Justin dropped Rufus for her, Sako started using her, Infiltration started using her (but he knows how to use everyone so I don't know if he counts lol), Xain picked her up as his back-up character.
Eq_NightGlider_ the only pro player that ranked her really high was Nemo everyone else put her amonst spot 10-15. People picked Elena because she is easy to get into so having a pocket elena yields great results with minimal efforts. Especially since no one knew how to fight against her. People picked her But even then I dont think she ever made top 10 in a major. For Justing Wong I can just say thats its his perfect character stall the time till kingdom come. So unless you are still playing USF4 stop talking out of your arse.
JinTheAce why so hostile? I haven't insulted you. Besides after all her buffs in Ultra Rose is at least the top end of mid tier maybe edging into top tier.
Not really. ST Vega can do exactly one thing, 50/50 wall dives. Sagat has multiple ways to fuck you in the face, and a round with him may not even last 2 seconds
Back in the SF2 days they would introduce updated versions of the game to keep people coming back to the arcades. It was also a way to add new characters and make balance changes before patches were a thing. The tradition stuck around for a long time but nowadays seems like most franchises are moving to introducing characters via DLC rather than new versions.
Oh. I have Super SF2: The New Challengers on Wii u virtual console. Since there was Super SF2 Turbo, World Warrior, and The New Challengers, I didn't know which one to pick. I got new challengers because it had more characters
The most overpowered and annoying sf2's character? original SF2's Vega... oh yeah, he can kick your butt without mercy if you don't know how to deal with it: In fact the characters in this list, compared to him, seem like a minor nuisance.
The only issue I ever had with guile was when I try to roundhouse jump strong kick him he would flash kick me to death my health was half gone I was like 😮😮😮😮🤨😠😠😠🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽 lmao
Agree with O.Sagat at 1, at 2 I would put someone not on the list: 2nd Impact Ibuki. Her SA3 was 3s Chun-Li's SA2 on steroids. Shorter meter, 2 stocks, could hit from half screen, and comboed from almost anything. No wonder they scrapped it for 3rd Strike. Add to that easy infinites and unblockables, and she was a nightmare. In fact, I'd make her 1.
Yup 3S Chun is a bitch. Best pokes in the game and top her off with a super that almost everyone can use since her damn low forward came out so fast. She's easy to play and her learning curve is low. If you an average player in 3S and pick Chun, then you automatically become a better than average player. It's a pain to play against her. It takes skill to play as Yun and it's not easy to pull lots of his stuffs like you wish when you see those Japanese players.
How can guy be mentioned in A1.. when... hes not even the best character in teh game, akuma and ken are... I think people have not actually seen this game played at high level lol
Sagat from Vanilla IV is a pretty good pick. But agree on SFV, the game is very well balanced compared to other titles, it feels like Chun was picked for the purpose of appealing to the 16's
This pretty much shows how nash was *a bit* slept on during SFV Season 1, he was lowkey the best in the game, everyone was complaining about chun but she didn't really win anything. Just like S2 boxer didn't win shit either. This game's balance is okay overall although match-ups really do matter, and some characters really could use a buff or two (friggin claw)
This was a nice list, but he needs to have CE Bison at #1, easy touch of death combo, redizzies, unblockable crossup psycho crusher, corner block stuf lockdown, even AE 15th demonstrated that O Gat didnt hold a candle on tier list compared with CE Bison.

JinTheAce Gamerbee mainly used elena in his EVO 2015 run where he got second.
JinTheAce why so hostile? I haven't insulted you. Besides after all her buffs in Ultra Rose is at least the top end of mid tier maybe edging into top tier.
Eq_NightGlider_ because u talking out of your arse. You decredit GamerBee who is fantastic player by saying he is just using a broken character.
@jmcrofts The boss version of Akuma in Super Street Fighter 2: Turbo is actually Shin Akuma in disguise.
Yun and Yang are my favorite characters
imagine 4-5 years ago Chun Li was on this list
ST Vega is a lot worse to fight than Old Sagat.
Not really. ST Vega can do exactly one thing, 50/50 wall dives. Sagat has multiple ways to fuck you in the face, and a round with him may not even last 2 seconds
Johnny Martinez be specific to Japanese just say
ST Claw.
Not to mention, but Sean’s SF3.2 Theme is sick too!
So I'm a smash bros guy. I have to ask, why are there multiple variations of one street fighter game?
Back in the SF2 days they would introduce updated versions of the game to keep people coming back to the arcades. It was also a way to add new characters and make balance changes before patches were a thing. The tradition stuck around for a long time but nowadays seems like most franchises are moving to introducing characters via DLC rather than new versions.
Oh. I have Super SF2: The New Challengers on Wii u virtual console. Since there was Super SF2 Turbo, World Warrior, and The New Challengers, I didn't know which one to pick. I got new challengers because it had more characters
Check out this other vid I made, it has some info on the chronology and differences between sf2 versions
ruclips.net/video/wAfoXVi27rE/видео.html
Thanks. Do you know of any begginers guides to street fighter 2? Specifically the new challengers?
Breck Jones search for david sirlin's super turbo tutorial. It's really good! Play that version o sf2!
crazy to see how far jm has come. bro didn't even open with folks back then
ST claw bodies O sagat for free. hell, even sim and boxer can body o sagat as well.
Thank you
Nice top 10, congratulations!
The most overpowered and annoying sf2's character? original SF2's Vega... oh yeah, he can kick your butt without mercy if you don't know how to deal with it: In fact the characters in this list, compared to him, seem like a minor nuisance.
+Muhan C.A. Agreed Vega is SOOOO annoying
Ugh!! The iron leg of death!! lol
The only issue I ever had with guile was when I try to roundhouse jump strong kick him he would flash kick me to death my health was half gone I was like 😮😮😮😮🤨😠😠😠🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽 lmao
B_side 86 -guile can do mean things with a slow sonic boom as well.
Tom Greenfield indeed bro he can he is a cheap ass lol
Zangeif from original Sf4 was overpowered as fuck
Man I miss New Generation and Second Impact Sean.
I grew up in the arcade era. When you lost, it cost you money. Not league points.
Nah, I didn't. Even if I knew about them, I wouldn't have been good enough.
well done on your lab work
How could you not add Dan to the overpowered list. Even his taunts are supers.
Nice video 👍
Stop at 1:19 Do you see what i see ? 😂😂😂
yeah she nude with purple nipples
Agree with O.Sagat at 1, at 2 I would put someone not on the list: 2nd Impact Ibuki. Her SA3 was 3s Chun-Li's SA2 on steroids. Shorter meter, 2 stocks, could hit from half screen, and comboed from almost anything. No wonder they scrapped it for 3rd Strike. Add to that easy infinites and unblockables, and she was a nightmare. In fact, I'd make her 1.
no yun from 3s lol?
he's way more broken in 3s than SF4
***** he's 09'er
I didn't want to put 2 characters from the same version of a game.
jmcrofts then why not 3s yun over sf4 yun?
you said you want to base it on tournament impact, 3s yun had 100x more tournament impact than SF4 yun...
The decision isn't 3s yun over sf4 yun - those are 2 different versions. The decision is 3s yun vs 3s chun and 3s chun wins that for me.
It takes skill to play as Yun and it's not easy to pull lots of his stuffs like you wish when you see those Japanese players.
ryu: he allows you to win with little to no knowledge or skill
Guile is awesome
Hell yeah
jmcrofts that's right!
jmcrofts
Guile sucks
I would think that Oro would be up there in SF3, because of his KO combos that bring people from 100% to 0% on a single combo.
worst characters. do itttt.
Donovan Chilton
Just Do It
Dan is in all of them
Awesome list
How can guy be mentioned in A1.. when... hes not even the best character in teh game, akuma and ken are... I think people have not actually seen this game played at high level lol
Akuma is excluded, the guy has already mentioned it in his video.
Oh i meant abel, i accidentaly called him seth.. but they do have the same facial feature's.
No character from SF5, and quite frankly even SF4, should even be near this list.
Veri7as I agree those games are pretty balanced, but I didn't want to do more than one character per game so I had to use 4 and 5 chars
Sagat from Vanilla IV is a pretty good pick. But agree on SFV, the game is very well balanced compared to other titles, it feels like Chun was picked for the purpose of appealing to the 16's
chun-li would be someone nightmare if she's being handle by the right hand..
"Chun-Li is dominating the tournament scene"
LOL no... Totally wrong right from the start + that fucking distracting mouse cursor...
I feel pity for the weak
This was a nice list, but he needs to have CE Bison at #1, easy touch of death combo, redizzies, unblockable crossup psycho crusher, corner block stuf lockdown, even AE 15th demonstrated that O Gat didnt hold a candle on tier list compared with CE Bison.
thar the most powerful is Ryu, lol
Good list. Good video. I never really played the 3rd series but I know Sean was crap just from playing him in 3rd strike for fun.
yeah Sean is pretty terrible in 3s haha
One of my most satisfying moments while playing SF4 was using Sagat, launching his super then before my brother came back down doing his ultra.
Wow! I never heard of Re-dizzy combo before. Whenever I reboot my street fighter, I'll make sure to try it! :)
You forgot Akuma in SFA3. He was pretty insane in that game.
Old Sagat, what a montage...
Streetfighter 4 and super turbo...
Old sagat, yeahhh
