Captain Power. What an amazing tv show was that. I was 7 when it came out. To bad it didn’t get the attention it deserved. The story line was top notch, pretty mature and dark. The toy line, amazing too!
One of my favorite failed lines is Hasbro's Air Raiders. Fun toys with a neat gimmick that didn't catch on.
I loved those
I wanted them so bad... my parents were like "that is the cheapest looking plastic junk". (Same reason I never got any Visionaries vehicles) Anyway, I was a sucker for weird scifi shows so Air Raiders definitely had my interest first time I saw the commercials. No show... *sob* ... just some comics. The line deserved so much better.
We got the big vehicle at a Pic N Save way after the toyline had died. As a kid, it never occurred to me that it was long dead but it was odd that they were hard to find.
Also Inhumanoids. Villains as main characters in a cartoon!
Air Raiders is that one obscure line that has stuck with me since I first saw the toys in the discount section of TRU and Lionel Playworld. The play gimmick was so cool and interesting with the air hoses to launch the small vehicles, that damn glider, and the missiles. The back story from the instruction sheets and comics wasn't too bad either.
Its also that toyline where you can pick up a majority of the produced figures and vehicles without destroying your life savings.
C.O.P.S was an underrated toy line. May have had 2 waves but a lot of people it seems forgot about it.
SuperNaturals looked so cool in those boxes, I remember them vividly.
I remember too man those things were so amazing
Damn, I used to have some Supernaturals when they first came out. I was amazed by them and thought they were super cool! Wish I kept them now....
I had a few of the little guys. They looked lkke Jawas haha.
@@chinapat6708 there's so many I wish I had kept... let alone the packaging and accessories! My earliest ones were MOTU and Thundercats, and then later TMNT and Marvel/DC
@@chadwik4000 yea, now I collect Marvel Legends and Selects and I gotta say, it's a great time to be a collector!
The company my Uncle Dan worked for, produced the Hologram stickers for both the Supernaturals & Visionaries toy lines. Many years later, they became a Fortune 500 company, because they're adhesive products could be used in Cell Phones. Who knew?
That’s awesome 😁
Lol, I remembered Photon live action show scares me when I was a kid.... But I like to watch Captain Power instead.... Now I have both Captain Power and Lord Dread MOC....
I was sucker for holograms as a kid and still am lol
Parents Groups ruined everything in the 80's.
I was about 10 years old when Lazer Tag hit. Everyone I knew hated Photon, and saw it as a knock off of Lazer Tag (whether it really was or not). So when we saw Photon toys, we didn't care, not because of price, but because it was Photon. As for Lazer Tag itself, it was HUGE. Everyone liked it because it had sleeker / cooler looking products. But then some kid my age pulled a LazerTag gun on a cop in Florida, when it was kind of dark out. Supposedly the cop saw the flash of green light at the end of the gun, so he pulled his real gun and shot the kid. It was all over the news at the time. And LazerTag got cancelled because of it.
Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future was awesome, but parent's groups flipped out that it was "too violent." Not only were they triggered by people shooting at each other on screen, but they lost their minds over kids shooting at the screen. So the parents groups shot down that show too.
Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light was also very popular. But the parents groups hated the action era, and wanted it gone. That's why at the end of the 80's they tried to bring in the Disney Afternoon, because it wouldn't "damage" us kids like Transformers and G.I. Joe did. (We were fine, btw). Of course a new action era would start up again about 5 years later with shows like Batman the Animated Series, X-Men, and Gargoyles. But Visionaries was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Had it come out in 1992, it would have probably lasted longer.
Amen! They screwed everything up when they got Congress to pass the law requiring kids shows to have "educational" content. I was born in 84, so I was too young to enjoy most of these toys in their initial release, but I was always able to find them in discount stores from 88-91. On top of that, many shows still aired in reruns but to me they were brand new.
@Ayan Majumdar Toooootally, because something ONE cop did in the 80s or 90s means we should defund the police.
Those kind of ''Karens'' are still around now trying to cancel everything. Even back in the 50s they got EC comics put out of business through their hysteria. Easier to blame external forces for kids bad behavior than have to look in the mirror and reflect on their own parenting abilities.
OMG I miss Brave Starr! Which was one of those morals show to be so popular at the time.
Bravestarr! What a great toyline! I loved Captain Power when it was on Dutch television!! Great episode again Ed!
I've always been intrigued by the Infaceables. That was a strange but cool gimmick.
I loved Visionaries. I had almost all of them. I would have loved to get those unproduced figures. I never had any Supernaturals but I always wanted some.
Yeah, I started collecting them when they went on sale. By the end, I had collected three vehicles and five of the carded figures, so I never got to complete the line.
I was also one of those people who'd have issue if they never released figures of the female characters.
4 figures from Photon made it out to the public: the two mentioned + Leon and Destructarr. I have all of them in my collection🙂
Awesome! I love how big they are 😄
Do you have any more information about this line?
Captain Power fans should definitely check out the VHS games, as they were Japanese animated and insanely cool. By far some of the best on rails game design too, making the toys feel far more important than the show actually managed. (Seriously, hundreds of enemies... Raid on Volcania is amazing) Still have my Interlocker...
I had most of the Captain Power toys in the 1980s, and had so much fun with them!!!!!
Photon and Captain Power were part of my childhood.
Awesome
I’ve got a MIB Captain Power with charging station over on my bookcase!
The fighter jets never interacted to the glowing parts of the tv screen. Or at least not consistently.
Yeah i heard they didn’t work well 🥲
Been waiting to see the early 90s stone protectors they werent around long but i loved those dudes😎
They’re awesome 😄
@@EdsRetroGeekOut i really like em too i had Cliff and Chester. I always thought the villains Zeek and Zoch i believe their names were looked the coolest!
"Stoooone Protectors! Our stones of power glow!"
I had the Caption Power toys and loved playing/watching the VHS tapes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember Tonka Steel Monsters that came and went it was like mad max vehicles and action figures.
I gotta check those out 🤩
@@EdsRetroGeekOut they were cool just didnt last and they were made by Tonka. Late 80s I believe. Mask was awesome too just didnt take off like Gi*Joe or He-man! Another toy line that was awesome was Rambo but again didnt take off.
Steel Monsters Tonka's Mad Max toys repainted with figures AWSOME
I got one for Christmas maybe in 88 or 89. For years, I couldn't track down that toyline until just a few years ago.
@@whosaidthat84 I had 2 my brother didnt like it lol I had the Jeep and pick up. I got them for Christmas too same year 88 or 89
Super Naturals and Visionaries were super popular here. I had a TON of Visionaries and a few of the Super Naturals.
Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys is another one that had a really good cartoon and toyline yet not only did it fail but it's nigh on forgotten! Like no one even saw it in the first place. I never see any youtubers talking about it and the series never got a DVD release. That, Skeleton Warriors and Visionaries really deserved better.
Captain Simian is best left forgotten. I loved the show... until the last episode. I remember watching the cliffhanger ending of the two-part finale, waiting a week to see the last episode... and seeing a rerun. Not until decades later did I manage to get the series with the last episode and jumped right to the end. Cliffhanger: Captain Simian abandons his crew in a difficult decision to keep the macguffin out of enemy hands which has been the malfunctioning sphere the entire time (that was predictable and fine). He lands on a barren world that looks lush and green to him and seems to grant his every desire.
Finale: The dream world is two alien nerds using psychic powers to mess with him for the lolz (no, really, they were bored and thought it was funny). Captain Simian tells them to get a life (once more, literally) and goes back to save his crew... by handing over the sphere which the bad guy needs to become the universe/god. His plan fails because the sphere has been broken since the first episode. Reedus then takes over and chases the Space Monkeys because he hates them. That last episode was truly an insult. Completely negated the purpose of the entire series.
I remember some of these toy lines. I was definitely a Photon kid. My brother and I had a set that we battled each other with. I think it must have cheaper than Laser Tag. How you continue to find more info to make these awesome toy history videos is always impressive Ed. Keep up the great work!
Thanks buddy 🤓
I have so many of the Super Naturals characters! Two are in the packaging, but the rest are loose. My grandma gave me a couple when I was a kid, but I think I left them at her house and haven't seen them since.
Awesome 😎
While the toys are long gone, but I still have the first issue of The Visionaries comic.
Awesome
That was a cool cartoon.
The toys were dumb so I just substituted castle legos!
I still have both Photon guns, and the Thundercats lair in their boxes. Ive had some quite big offers for the Lair. In fact im working on a deal for a Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Dwarf army in trade for it.
My parents owned a toy shop from '76 to '97, and the incredible toys I found boxed away in our warehouse was incredible. My parents left it all to me. I recently started selling some of it off. I have a whole pallet of boxes of unopened transformers from the 80's, boxes of GI Joe bubble packs unopened, just incredible stuff my parents thought was worthless for decades.
Awesome coverage Ed, and congratulations on taking part in the Iconicon event! 😎👍🏼
“Lords of Light” could be another failed gimmicky toy line that would fit in nicely with these equally flashy (literally… but maybe figuratively too 😄) properties.
Thanks buddy 🤓
I really loved visionaries and captain power when I was a kid. such a shame they didn't last long. great shows and cool toys
They came out at the wrong time if they had been a bit earlier the companies might have prolonged the line 🥲
I believe Power Lords were a one wave toy line that might have had comic book marketing support.
Ahhhhhh Ed! I just knew you would include The Pirates of Dark Water on this list! It deserves its own episode…
Ive just done a vid on them 🤓
Skeleton Warriors, Captain Simian, Bucky O'Hare. So many really good toy lines and cartoons that died after one season and wave of toys.
I still have the Lazer Tag set with the boxes and manuals. I break them out for a little at-home target practice. The Photon figures didn't look that bad at all. Another fun toyline was Sky Commanders but the strings can get a bit messy and tangled if not stored well.
I love the little Squirtle on your shelf, I'm a Pokemon toy collector and I have that and plenty of other similar ones.
I remember being amazed by those holographic figures. - Great video.
I was one of those kids that LOVED each of those lines and was sorely disappointed when they just faded away from the shelves. One other line, that I always feel I'm the only person who ever cared about was Power Lords. I had the figure of the main character and I LOVED IT... until a neighbor kit broke it and it no longer spun around.
Is that the one with the blue and orange dude with two faces?
One of my fondest memories that I can remember from when I was really young, like maybe 3 or 4? So around 1984 ir '85, and going to the local hardware store in my small town and seeing a full turnstyle of the DC SuperPowers 1st wave... if I could go back in time! I did manage to get a Superman back then, though! There's a lot of time periods and stores I'd love to go back in time to...
Probably my oldest toy I still own is the skull supernatural. I got it from my brother as a very young kid. I never knew it has the chest plate.
amazing as always, thanks for taking the time to put out such great videos, love it!
I had a Captain Power plane and action figure as a kid. It took forever to get the figure into the vehicle and he'd pop out when hit too many times. I once attacked my brother's plane while he was preparing it on the ground and he physically attacked me when I activated the eject.
I love the videos Ed’s retro geek out. I instantly was hooked when I found your channel. Nothing brings better memories of nostalgia. Please keep then coming.
Loved this video, been some time since I popped into your content- keep it up man!
Also massive respect to that Critters shirt
I had the WoW Lazer Tag sets with the helmets, caps and base it was the coolest and best looking system. In the late 90s I had a run at operating a Q Zar arena and still have 2 red vests 2 green vests 2 q-kid vests and a Marshall phaser.
Loved the video sir & your parts of Iconicon. Also awesome shirt! Now there's a movies that needs an update- Critters!
Thanks and indeed 🤩 Critters remake!
Love Super Naturals and Visionaries - have big collection of both. Really wish there would have been the release of the 2nd wave of Visionaries. Great video, thanks Ed!
Another great episode! I remember most of the toy lines mentioned! 👍🏼
I had some Supernaturals, the skeleton guy and the red ghostling. They were badass.
Oh yeah-My cousin had this Laser Tag/ Photon "Rip-Off" , called Laser Combat. It came with a battery operated Robot.
Kenners centurions 1986, they had a short run but I did have one action figure and remember the cartoon series, great channel👍
Centurions is for sure an interesting line but so expensive in the secondary market
I had some of the Supernaturals figures. I thought they were really cool! I had one of the Visionaries figures but never picked up any of the others for some reason. I always wanted Lazer Tag but never got to play it.
I had Super Naturals and Visionaries
I had two of those supernaturals. They were cool to look at.
Awesome Video, love watching them!
I'm a major fan of the Visionaries, and must thank you because I can actually read many of the names of the characters that were supposed to come with the second wave. Also, just for the record, they are not forgotten by Hasbro as there was a Transformers Visionaries crossover a few year back.
@Julia - 𝙾𝚙𝚎𝚗 𝙼𝚢 PROFILE You better believe I remember MASK. I finally managed to get the full cartoon series a few years back. Growing up, my favorite was the guy on the motorcycle that turned into a helicopter and whose mask created holograms or illusions to mess with people.
Visionaries was awesome, if i could afford it id totally recollect them
Thanks for your videos.Your Special care and dedication shows
Love this series, Ed! 😁😎
Bravestarr was an awesome show that I still enjoy to this day!
used to love the bravestarr figures, seemed to be at a time with a lot of similar lines and sizes popping up and vanishing but I do hope bravestarr get some new figures made like bucky and silverhawks has.
I agree they would be great to see done by the new standard of collectible toys 🤓
I had all that stuff (except Bravestar). My brother and I used our Photon sets like three times. The helmets were too heavy.
Another great vid your videos are so well made & full off info
Thanks 🤓🤘
Keep these great video's comeing
Awesome video as always buddy. Love it. :)
🤓 thanks for the help buddy 🤩
Awesome episode as usual bro
Okay the Supernaturals look really cool. I'm gonna have to keep an eye out for those now when I go old-toy-hunting
Me too i want some 🤓
The late 80s (86-89) was so wildly competitive that it makes so much sense why so many toylines failed. Ninja Turtles were the kings, Transformers and GI Joe were still hot, and Batman was about to hit theaters. Plus, Nintendo and Genesis/Mega Drive were draining parents' wallets too.
Indeed 🤓
Skeleton Warriors, i was always super bummed out it lasted so shortly :(
The toys were super detailed for the time and were awesomely gory
They also inspired Mcfarlane to do his toys so detailed a bit 🤓
Skeleton Warriors have been released 3 times atlease twice I know of fun line
My father bought me a supernatural (Snakebite) and I liked it so much. I still have it but I loss the shield, the chest plate and the staff.
I completely forgot about the photon figures..I had those...never had the actual gun and helmet though I was more into lazer tag
I had EVERYTHING you presented in this episode... all thanks to Canadian Tire dumpster diving, Woolworth $0.50 days and Eaton's buy 1 get 3 free clearance specials. The only thing I didn't have the the Visionaries iron rock playset and the supernaturals tomb set. But I did see them both displayed at Canadian Tire Christmas time display with all the figures that year.
Awesome 🤘
@@EdsRetroGeekOut oddly enough Sears in Canada always had the Hasbro properties on lock down and I did see the lead Voltron cats at the local K-mart.
damn man do y'all remember MASK cartoon where they had cars that could turn into an alternative mode and they'd fight crime and some bad team?
Toy history is a great segment Ed keep it up fantastic viewing
Thank you 🤓
I was 9 or 10 when Captain Power came out. I had the good guy ship and my brother had the bad guy ship. That was a great toy. We got a lot of hours out of those toy's.
I have clear memories of playing Lazer Tag and watching the cartoon!
i remember lazer tag back in the 80's it was cool back then. but the bad side was it was very pricey. i did have the captain powers ship and he's base station. but i went to goodwill and found captain power ship and the POWER ON ENERGIZER & Dread Ellis Phantom Striker & the Interlocker Anti-Aircraft gun. with 3 vhs tapes. but no Figures. all for $15.00
Another great video, love it.
As you can see, I'm a big Bravestarr fan and it's a great toyline for me. Unfortunately it was no success, but on the other hand, it's still possible to get a full set because there where not so many figures out. And Bravestarr is by far not so expensive like the MotU Vintage toys (currently) 😎
No love for Battle Beasts? Hasbro's 2" anthropomorphic warrior animals with chest rubsigns from the late '80s. The rubsigns simulate a simple RPS game. Fun fact: the toyline was part of the Japanese Transformers canon.
I collect those 🤓 they had multiple waves of toys
Great video Ed!
Some of these properties should come back. Especially Visionaries and Bravestarr
I think Hasbro's mistake was making the Visionary toys bigger then GI JOE figures. As a Child my Joes and Star Wars figures interacted a lot because they were the same size, even if they didn't have the same articulation, especially using the vehicles.
I also picked up a few Captain Power figures too, because they were close enough in scale (although the plastic felt more brittle to me) , but sadly I never got any of the vehicles but my friend had the ship.
I think so as well, they didn’t fit into the gijoe vehicles too often and some of the visionairies vehicles were giant
That was the problem with Air Raiders, COPS and Inhumanoids as well. I guess Air Raiders vehicles were too large scaled (compared to its characters) to be 3 3/4" but then it was a Hasbro invention, so maybe they could've made not so large scaled vehicles.
I think the scales were that Hasbro didn't want to compete against itself. That's why Secret Wars weren't done Masters of the Universe scale, it was a flanker brand to compete against Kenner Super Powers.
Great history of these potential toy lines. That's something how the price makes a major difference for the Photon figures. They would be too expensive for me back as a kid, I agree.
Super naturals we’re awesome
10:48 I love Visionaries!!!
Love the Critters shirt
I had 2 Supernaturals they were awesome think I had a visionarie as well remember owning a visionary ship
All the toys I loved were mentioned lol.
I’d totally cast Chris Evans as Bhodi Li and Mads Mikkleson as Mandarr for a Photon Movie.
Yes 🤘
This photon sounds cool
Great video!
Another fun video!
I would love to have complete sets of super naturals and the visionaries!
They are fun to own 😁
@@EdsRetroGeekOut I had a lot of them once as a kid but never for a moment thought they’d still be wanted 30 years from then 🙄
I've personally held that visionaries needed an extra feature like beast figures to represent their powers. Yeah the holograms were cutting edge. But they don't really lend much value to action play. Super naturals being these creepy cloaked figures. definitely kept it simple and spooky.
I collect Captain Power toys, and had a few of them as a kid. Never saw the show other than the future force training tapes. Which did have some live action segments at the power base.
But it was such an impressive production.
Yeah the production was pretty badass but also a bit too violent for some parents i think 😅
Great Video Ed.
Thank you 🤓
Killer T Shirt dude VVN.
I have a Captain Power figure still!
this trip through my childhood reminds me of bionic six
also centurions and exo squad
Starriors... though I think it got a partial second wave. Also Sectaurs and Dino Riders
Captain power was a good show.
I always wanted captain power, but never got any😎👍
loved lazertag the design was very sleek i had the helmet and main set but sadly no one to play with
I had the MASK Laser Command Set. It was boring compared to the toys shown in this video.
I guess many toylines had to fail, as we had so many great lines already. Couldn't afford them all.
Forgot about the lasers at the end of mask 😢
Came back for a 2nd watch, LOL.
Thanks buddy 🤓
Ed I miss the ring raiders,
And wy was the cartoon always awesome and the toy line some what disappointing.
Nice video as always
Thanks 🤓
Air raiders and sky commanders would be a great video for you to do 👌
