  • Tag along to New York City as we visit the glamorous Manhattan home of interior designer Sophie Sutton! Learn how when Sophie and her husband acquired their 19th century upper east side townhouse, it was in a neglected state of disrepair, without even a kitchen. See how Sophie unified all four floors of the house into a comfortable and elegant home perfect for family and frequent guests. Art plays a major role in the house and you’ll see how Sophie effortlessly melded modern art with antiques and vintage pieces. Watch to see how she transformed her kitchen into a welcoming urban retreat with one side dedicated to work and one to the “pretty stuff.” And learn why Sophie likes townhouse living, where each floor can represent different functions while relating overall. Some may be intimidated by dark rooms, but Sophie embraces them. See how she collaborated with Fromental to create a custom wall covering for her dark and sumptuous dining room and created a dark and cozy man cave for her husband on the bottom floor. Most importantly, you’ll discover how Sophie has created a home that represents her family’s life together, infused with personal collections and art, textiles and mementos of their travels. You’ll be inspired, informed and entertained!!

I didn’t want this one to stop. It is not only a beautifully and rather serenely designed house, it feels like a genuine, beloved home and was clearly incredibly well thought out to be functional and practical, also respectful of its own history. But it was also a really terrific interview, we got a whole psychological personality profile and a lot of helpful tips and insight, and inspirational ideas to copy based on her experience. Being Scottish, I absolutely loved her observation about the farmer’s sword and what would we take with us today - our phone? A brilliant piece, loved it.

Well now isn't THIS interesting: I'm very inspired and impressed by the architectural details and actual interior DESIGN of the home more than the decoration of it. I watched this video twice to take it all in, especially that practically designed but unexpectedly characterful kitchen. (That looks like a housekeeper's dream, so easy and straight-forward to clean, ha!). Ms Sutton did a great job breathing life back into a historic property to make it feel warm, inviting yet elegant and high-end. She got the balance between familiar and modern whimsy just right. It feels grand and full of character because of her reverence for original architectural details. Beautifully executed project. PS= Ms Salk always strikes me as the perfect houseguest. Charming. Thank you for another lovely video.

My brain just stopped right there. It is a brilliant move to break all the standard design rules about scale and proportion yet it completely rewrites those rules. Size, color, texture, lighting - they all have a role in balancing the look, and I just thought this was so spectacularly outside the box!! I'm in GA too btw!

What a great home! I just love her feeling for each room, how she honors the history of the home and appreciates the stories of its previous inhabitants. It really warmed my heart when she spoke of the doctor, my great grandfather was a doctor they lived in a three story brownstone in Manhattan my grandmother would describe it to me. It was near Lincoln Center at the time. Then the hat in the Halston box! My older sister was a model in Manhattan in the 60’s she has a photo in her portfolio wearing a hat very similar. I cant wait to share this with her. Thank you for taking us to this amazing home. Sophie is lovely.

What really struck me with this home was the overall feel. Historic/vintage structure underneath, with bold, interesting choices that are also practical. The scenic mural wallpaper in the dining room is everything!!! I love how she made the bathroom floors so interesting. And the kitchen! The large table works so well, with its visual weight, but doesn't block the light or overwhelm the space. Making one side a workspace, and the other a butler's pantry makes sense given the size and shape of the room. With our old house, we also keep the fridge in the service porch/laundry room, where it's within easy reach of the kitchen counter through an open doorway. Our guest room had a faux fireplace with red, blue, and yellow talavera flower tiles and a gumwood Art Deco mantel; we painted the ceiling blue, walls pale gold, and went with an Egyptian theme, including two large framed prints of temples by David Roberts. My favorite piece, though, is a hooked rug I found in a catalogue; it's a tiger skin. These tours are always so much fun! :)
