- Von Dutch full interview. I pieced together the parts that were already out there into one full video. Von Dutch and Big Daddy discuss the origins of striping and give tips on better striping and lettering.
I got the chance to truly visit with Dutch in the early 80’s. Honestly one of the most interesting and intelligent people I’ve ever met. He decorated (and dated )a piece for me with his famous ‘flying eyeball’. By the date, he added a question mark. When I inquired why, he grinned and replied “ Were YOU here when they started countin’ years? I wasn’t! Who knows if they actually started with the year 0? You know how them damn politicians are!”
Thank you Von Dutch!
That explains why im drawn to this guy haha
it took 4 days of watching during my lunch breaks. I'm glad this was posted. It was nice watching two legends just bantering back and forth with some insightful tips, life history, some practicals of lettering and pin-stripping, and some funny off color humor.
The 8 people who thumbs downed this video must have thought they were going to be looking at a clothing line video.
Haha, def not a fury hat clothes line.
😂what a fun day this was taping Dad n Dutch, at Bruckers in Fillmore. We took Dutch a pizza, he didn't want it... he said everything he needs is in a can of Miller Beer! 😂
hey man, what year was this?
I’ve recently completed the restoration of his famous 1950 GMC bus that was his home ,studio ,kitchen, fabrication shop, welding ,gunsmithing, and all the creative stuff he was famous for. When in Phoenix come by for a tour, unless it gets sold first.
Oct.17 th the History channel will air a show called “Fully Torqued” it covers the restoration of Von Dutches bus ,in Phoenix ,Az.
I’ll be in phx next weekend, still good for a gander?
Cool to see you posting Steve! I'm a big admirer of your style. I've learned a hell of a lot from watching you work. The video you did of the Harley fender with the bird that goes the full length, that's one of my favorite things I've ever seen someone paint.
Matthew taylor I’m not usually at the shop on weekends during the week is better ,but call ahead cell 602-284-1230
@@Satanabinoid gimme a call after ten am ,the bus is at my cave creek road location my cell is 602-284-1230 ,if I’m at the shop you can com and see it.
I still have a custom painting magazine with the Von Dutch interview and him living in the bus, I believe he was working in a museum at the time.
I like how brutality honest this man is. If you can't draw you can't pinstripe. I can relate to this guy. All I did was draw in school cause that's all I was good.
"These days people are tryina say everybody is equal, everybody ain't equal! If can't do it, then ya can't do it!"
I wish it wasn’t so blurry but it’s still a treat to see these old masters work. I’m really grateful that Steve Kafka made a few RUclips videos.
I love his logic, you could imagine him saying” why not wash your hand with piss, it’s start out as water right?”
lol "the best anti bacterial in the world right? "
“You take every color of paint in this building and pour it all into one can and stir it up and you will get brown. That’s what you get. That explains a lot of things.”
He’s not wrong! If you know, you know.
Thank you for saving this long gone video of two great men. Legends in automotive history
These guys are so Awesome, down to Earth, genuine people!
Two legends, i love how the history of pin striping started with covering grinder scratches.
I've never seen one of these before and its almost like Eddy was well ahead of his times... its like an early youtube tutorial/interview. What a legend!
I must've watched this video 5 or 600 times before ever picking up a striping brush or kwill. Even to this day I'll pick up something new each time I see it.
Otter Green I got all my supplies too and I’m doing the same thing..
Same here
Ha, so it’s you to blame for the poor quality of the video- you wore it out!
I’m starting square one with a 1990 UMC bread truck (Harley built body) and this video.
@@billyboy-59 now that’s some von Dutch style humor
I used to get a kick out of seeing Von Dutch's name in Cartoons Magazine scrawled in tiny places
Outstanding. They don't make em' like that anymore. Great interview with two legends. Von dutch was the Charlie Daniels of the stripe brush! Very practical and insightful advice.
I worked for Ed Roth writing stories for Rat Fink comics. I met Ed just once at a Rat Fink re-union down in So Cal in the late 80's, and met Von Dutch, Robert Williams and the great Ed Newton at the same event. Roth was a giant with catcher's mitts for hands!
Interesting to hear the radio at 1:06:30 advertising lunch for $.25 and “top it off with a Martini for only 45 cents more “. Wow!
Would love to have been there. What a time capsule.
Steve Zwemer yeah I heard that too , I also noticed the god awful radio station, playing Muzak / elevator crap
@@robertkidd2192 If Von Dutch listened to it, it makes it a hell of a lot cooler than anything you listen too lol
He says 25 cent martinis, then later a martini for 25 cents more he doesn’t mention how much the lunch costs
@@robertkidd2192 It's called Jazz/Big Band Music, it's what Kenny listened to when he was a teenager in the 40's & 50's. That WAS "rebel" music in those pre-Rock & Roll days....
Two Geniuses discussing their creativity. AWESOME.
This is such a good video thank you for putting it together
been looking for a documentary on von dutch what a great out look on life a real lost to the art
Bought this on DVD for like $12.00, on eBay. One of the best $12.00, I ever spent.
GOLD! Awesome video!
Awesome. I’d love to see more interviews of old schoolers.
Thanks.
got to meet Roth and Williams in Seattle 93 or so. Roth was kind enough to chat about his 6 wheeled go kart that was on display made a point of mentioning this was pre elf f1 car. Dutchs kit sold for 240k I think he would laugh. Is of no use to anyone who cant use it properly. Made my day pre cell phones pre computer real dudes
Some of the greatest things come out of fuck ups 😂 or “happy accidents as another famous artist would say
I bought this on eBay, for $12.00. One of my favorite DVD’s on striping I own.
What was the name of the DVD? I’d love to have a hard copy of this.
I wish von Dutch could see some of the strippers today. I think it would BLOW HIS MIND There are some unbelievable strippers out there today. It’s a total different level.
I’d have to disagree. I don’t think he’d be impressed by a lot of the “busy”work being done. That’s not to say there aren’t some great stripers today, I just don’t see him appreciating the “more is more” approach so many guys take today.
@@tannerrobbins7377 Thank God someone FINALLY spelled "stripers" correctly!! Strippers is a whole different video. 😉
DAMN. Big DADDY Ed Roth and Von Dutch. Wow. can’t believe they were talking about smoking a joint and stripping . I know a stripper who is fantastic . When he smokes and drinks he goes beyond fantastic. The higher he gets the better he gets . And the amazing part is his hands shake all the time. Once he puts the brush to the car or whatever he’s painting it magic to watch. I watched him strip 6 hot rods in one day at the gator nationals and he made 3 grand. $500 a pop. He would go this for a week. He made about 10 grand every year at the nationals.
1:55:22 why did i think he was gonna say if you guys have any questions leave em in the comment section lol
A arte de Von Dutch roda o mundo e chegou ao Brasil. Sou amante do pinstripe.
Beautiful legends, this was such a joy. Thx!
The music is AMAZING
The first time i heard these fellas was at the showcase in corona in 95 or 96. Tickets were 9 or 10 bucks. The spit was falling like rain. The singer was doing his best to get the crowd to fuck him up. Getting a coating of lots of spit with a little blood on you from the pit . A early 90's punk rock rite of passage
Thanks for posting this video. There is so much to learn from it.
Thank you for posting this video. I never knew the small paper cups with the wax lining and how it effects the paint!
a guy named Tweety from California striped my t bucket. I wonder if it's the same Tweety that Dutch mentioned?
Tweety is Ed
Thick and thin rule for letters: 10 to 4 the stroke is more...2 to 8 the stroke is not as great!
I wonder how many beers Von Dutch had before the camera started rolling? Lol! Nice to see he was a real down to earth guy...
3 six packs that day... one 6 pack before we started taping
What a character he is ,everything seems black and white to him , no grey areas ( no pun intended) such confidence.
Great Video thx, anyone else think he sounds like Agent 86 Maxwell Smart? "would you believe" hahaha
What did he use motor oil for ? To keep his brushes from drying up ?
This video is a real jem.
My dad still has a Von Dutch energy drink can as well as the Von Dutch hat that used to be mine
Von Dutch looks like and talks like Humphrey Bogart.
Ed kinda sounds like Garfield the cat!
Just what I thought!
Guy was a National Treasure. This footage is fantastic!
Great stuff! Thank you!
What such a great uplad. Thanks! Cheers from Brazil.
When these two men passed, the world got a little poorer, 👍👍😑🇦🇺
Man that's so awesome.I did hot rods bikes Naked babes .
Thanks for posting. Cool piece of history.
"Those letters have been around for 100 of years ...." .... At least a couple of 100 Im' thinking.

“There’s a brand called ‘greyhound’. I don’t know what it’s made outta but it sure ain’t greyhound”
He said his eyes are going bad so it's harder to stripe. He also has Ed getting him doing throw away work for him von knows it he's not stupid. Great stripe work for not giving a shit on vons part.
Does anyone know how to adjust the tracking on youtube?
Thank you for uploading this jem. Unfortunately I can't understand everything. It would be great if subtitles were on.
did Von Dutch have a shop on Scottsdale Road and Curry back in the 70s
I think his shop was between Tempe amd Phoenix on Van Burean
It was called “the river bottom” had a shop next to one of his best friends Dick Odette who was my guide through the Von Dutch Bus Restoration in Phoenix.
Couple of geniuses, these guys were brilliant!!!
"car that look like an airplane" hmm he skipped the 50's where they thrived like my 56 savoy
Great video

anyone know what year this was?
85ish best I can say
Is is pure GOLD children under stand if you can !!!
💗🌈💗🌈💗
❤️
Feels like ed Roth was trying to make him look stupid. His double g on the word eggs was zoomed in just to prove that he didn't make them exactly the same. Tbh he was trying to outshine the master.
Roth was like that. He wanted everyone to believe he was “IT!”
what's with the vicegrips clipped to his overalls?
Charlie H a man should never be caught without his vise grips nearby.. lol
Bottle opener
Charlie H I have a pair of his coveralls with a replica vice grips clipped to the hammer loop in my Von Dutch Bus that I’ve restored, and is for sale.
@@stevekafka man that's awesome! Do you have any pics or videos posted of the bus?
@@coexcharlie just search , put my name and von Dutch Bus, I just did a show with the History channel about my restoration of the bus ,going to air on my birthday oct.17 th show is called Torqued
Im guessing hes sick or cant pinstripe hardly anymore at this time cuz them lines are not acurate at all or this 80's Vhs is messing with me bad....
That shits so easy
Have some respect.
sez Doug G........the striper no one has ever heard of.
just make it two bucks dammit! 🤡
