2nd & Charles is a huge store and games are just a small section of it. It's not a surprise that there are mistakes like this. When I buy 3DS or Vita games there it takes forever for the clerk to find them behind the counter.

Actually, Wisdom Tree repros are legit and not counterfeit.

NoeLPZC Because the word "repro" quite-literally means "reproduction." Other industries do it all the time, sometimes counterfeit, sometimes official. For example: There are official reproductions and replicas for Hollywood stuff all the time.

It's pretty clear to me that when they researched the value of this title online that they found a repro and didn't know what that meant. That description/price is what made it into their system and made it onto the price tag. That doesn't mean that they are deliberately engaging in counterfeit sales.

A few weeks ago I finally reacquired a TI-99/4A in the box. Been looking for another one since my childhood. That same weekend I chance-encountered two other excited new owners. Also, I found a brand-new TI-99/4A Speech Synthesizer module at Goodwill the previous day. It's suddenly raining TI-99/4A! Considering the current retro-computer craze, I can't imagine that anyone would have trouble finding a buyer.

Legal protection. Claims like "X did Y" open yourself up for libel suits, and it is a bit of a risk to take when your evidence is only an unverified second-hand accounting by a random person. So you say "allegedly", which turns your statement from a statement of fact into a statement of possibility.
Pat would be taking the risk that the story is false. He'd also be taking a risk that he might be sued even if the story was true. Some people/companies will file libel suits against true claims, just to try to bully their way through. There is also the wiggle room aspect where Second and Charles could claim that the actions of that individual store were against company policy (similar to an employee offering to put product into the free bin is against policy), while Pat was leveling claims against the entire chain.

Possibly the employee labeled it as a repro to disguise it on purpose which is why it was behind the counter in a crate with a bunch of commons and the employee was planning to buy it himself after his shift.
Same with the TI 99. Taking it for themselves.

Yeah I was thinking the same. It seemed to me like some kind of deterrent so they could nab it for themselves once the store managers realized they can't get rid of it. The same thing happened to me in North Carolina. They normally have a free bin full of books or whatever. That day they had the earthbound strategy guide as well as the super metroid strategy guide. I went inside and asked the turn in section if they had those games. They had earthbound in a green snes case that belonged to a blockbuster. They couldn't get earthbound to work so they gave it to me for free. I had to wait an additional day to get the other games I saw were brought there so that way they were priced. I also got chrono trigger, super metroid, link to the past, mario kart, and a bunch of others games in box for little over 100 bucks.

At a restaurant in Georgia, at which I once worked, I served a General Manager of a 2nd & Charles. Without me knowing who he was at the time, his wife asked what I thought of the store. I answered honestly stating that I mainly went in there for the retro games and was purchasing less each time I went in there because the prices made no sense. I commented that I thought that fifty dollars for a Legend of Zelda gold cart on NES is a bit much. His wife then tells me who he was and he admitted that prices are, for the most part, gauged by popularity as they are a company that feeds into the impulse buy. Some random schmoe may see that gold Zelda cart and think that it's worth the fifty dollars because it's gold. I've since stopped shopping there unless I'm extremely bored or desparate because I disagree with that business model. All that does is put games in the hands of people that are two years away from attempting to sell it back and thinking that it's worth more than it is. Any well known Nintendo franchise cart suffered the same kind of inflated prices.

12:15 I don't agree with this though, repros, fakes, caunterfeits shouldn't have to be destroyed. Some people just want to play it on their NES but havn't got over a few hundred of thousand bucks left to spend. It's a good cheap alternetive. However it's sad not every repro says it clearly to be a repro.

  • @MrRom92DAW

Pat, a similar thing happens at a lot of record stores that really bothers me. Some European/Asian counterfeiters will press up counterfeits of specific versions of older albums known to be sought after, sometimes on colored vinyl, and they will sell these by the boatload and get them distributed widely. There's also a well known group in Germany that does this for more modern hip hop albums. A lot of the stores will out these in the racks and refer to them as "imports", either on the price tag or if asked about it. Of course the seasoned collectors know better but the newbies don't, and I've seen some situations where they'll ask about it and they'll straight up deny outright that it's a counterfeit even though they absolutely know exactly what it is. I get that it's a risk selling this stuff in the store, and I personally don't agree with the practice of selling or supporting that junk at all - but if you're going to do it, don't deceive your customers. Don't lie to them about what it is and don't have it mixed in next to the legal product. This seems very similar to the colorful wording used by 2nd and Charles - "repro" - so they can skirt around the entire issue of the legality.

I've seen plenty of "mom & pop" shops selling repros. Not just games that never came out either, I've seen repros of high $ NES, SNES, and Genesis licensed games at probably 60%+ of the stores I've been in all across the eastern US. Most of them do label/price them as repros, but its still the same thing as what 2nd did.
Hell, Goodwills for that matter sell fake designer brands everyday. I bought a set of lawn darts at one 1 month ago...those have been banned in the US since 1988 (they were banned off and on before this as well)
Basically...None of these places care as long as there is some $ to be made.

Yeah, a local place here in Canada is usually selling repro copies of Pokemon Leaf Green and Donkey Kong Country for the GBA. Also, when I was there when they first had them they had three or two copies of EACH. They didn't label them as fake, although the labels where pretty fake (more so on the DKC where the title was stretched), but instead later would list real copies on their online site as "real" and not listing fakes as fake.

    • @MrDrokkul
      @MrDrokkul 7 лет назад +1

Ramjet164 Lawn darts are basically a scaled up version of the classic pub dart. Imagine a dart about 12" (about 30cm for you) with a rod on the back to hold. You place a circular target on the ground whatever distance away from you, then toss the dart up in the air by the handle and let gravity do the rest. The darts have a metal tip, but they are blunt. The velocity of the falling dart sticks it into the ground. You and friends take turns doing this and score by hitting within the target ring on the ground. They are also sometimes called yard javelins or "jarts" IMO they are perfectly safe when used correctly. Unfortunately stupid people and unsupervised children are two things that do exist so lawn darts were the end factor in almost 7,000 emergency room cases and 5 deaths within a 10 year time span.

What should be a red flag is that a corporate store has an Inventory SKU for a counterfeit game. In other words they have placeholders in their inventory system for fraudulent goods. Assuming the copyright hasn't expired, and you could find the copyright holder, they might have a legal case they could bring against 2nd and Charles, but that's assuming you could figure that out and they cared to make a case for a game they don't make money on anymore.

I assume the employees are just told to assume the real rare games are repros, simply because the minimum wage cashiers aren't qualified to judge wether it's repro or not. They certainly don't want to buy and sell a cart as real when it turns out it's repro.

I'm not actually surprised at all by this. My local second and Charles only has like 2 employees who actually know what they're doing with retro games. Items are frequently mislabeled or priced in ways that make no freaking sense. I actually have come across a counterfeit gba game there once, but to be fair, there was nothing to indicate that they knew it was fake and it was a very convincing one. I didn't even realize it until 3 days after I bought it and realized it played on my gba, but not retron. Then I opened it up to discover a glob of epoxy and the word "nimtomdo" written in a slightly wrong font on the board.

Hey Pat, I have no knowledge of the particular laws in the US governing this sort of stuff, but I personally don't see an issue with selling repro carts marketed as repro carts at this point in time. There might still be people who just want to PLAY those games - neither collect nor preserve them. As long as said games are out of production and are not being sold officially in a cart format by whoever holds the rights this shouldn't be a problem at all. I doubt NES repro market is bringing down the economy after all.

    Okay, here's what I think.
All that matters in this situation is that somebody got a game they wanted and didn't pay eBay scalper prices. If the person trading the game in doesn't know the value of the game then what does it hurt them? In my eyes, complaining about this is equivalent to complaining about someone getting an Earthbound from a yard sale for $20 rather than paying the average going price of $200. What does it matter? They got rid of their old "trash", and someone else, considering they don't resell it for a profit, found some "treasure".

I currently and never have seen the stores "2nd & Charles". I can say however, that some smaller stores/chains that are similar to their business do these exact things. However, they've done these things to also Music and rare print movies. I personally witnessed a store employee at a shop called Disc Jockey offered little money for a box of DVDs they brought in. 1 of those DVDs was a "Drop Dead Fred", which I recall as being a sub-par movie overall but was unaware of it's rarity until 2 weeks later coming back in and seeing the same DVD on the shelf as labeled over $125. I also know this store/location to have employees regularly take home "no longer viable items" that they would later sell on eBay or craigslist or to local collectors. These places are not being held accountable by really anyone as these incidents were from nearly 4-6 years. Seeing this still being an issue to those that would like to see things preserved properly is truly sad.

Tristan Johns you can buy a PAL copy of that film for £2 here in the UK, maybe it was a Pal one? - Really sucks that they do that though, I traded a box of 80 DVDs into blockbuster video over here years ago and they told me that the more I traded in the less I got for each of them. So for example every 10you traded in knocked X% off each individual one. Sadly I was moving house and had to get rid of them fast, you couldn't even go to their other stores with a load because you had to have an account with them which would still add this discount wherever you went.
Still managed to get a few PS3 games with the money though so I didn't mind at the time. Had I not been in a hurry I could have quadrupled the value on eBay or gumtree.

how about all the flea market sellers that get ripped off from resellers? buy a game for 2 bucks and its worth 50$, don't see the buyer telling them it's worth way more.

One employee probably said its a reproduction. We will give you $5 for it, and then set it behind the counter until they would possibly buy it at the end of their shift? Maybe another employee, not knowing sold the copy to the lucky purchaser.

  • @TheGamestars

People trading in, in most cases don't know the worth of the games, and they are pretty much happy to take anything, so them getting ripped off is their own ignorance, as you said, they could've gotten a lot more on ebay - if they looked, but they didn't.
It would be pretty bad if the employee was lying about the worth of the game, but if he did, he'd know the worth and just take it for himself. So there was really no gain for him there. if the store has a set price of sorts, and the customer agrees, there's absolutely no issue if he gets ripped off, unless he was "pressured", lied to, etc.

I tried to trade in my Legend of Zelda - The Minish Cap cart in hopes to get a few bucks, but was told they couldn't accept it because it was a repro. It's possible because I bought it used off Amazon and the battery does not work I guess because it won't hold a save. I let them know up front so either they went with it or was truthful. They didn't make mention of the free bin. This was in Hoover, AL.

1 more thing. Casey should contact the store's Management and explain the situation because when you trade in games at a 2nd & Charles they take your Driver's License and any trade in credit goes onto your personal account. They SHOULD be able to look at the time stamp that the game was traded in and locate/contact the individual and fix this whole fucked up situation.

It pisses me off that the game's original owner got screwed over because of an incompetent employee.
But I don't have a problem in selling reproduction cartridges in general. IF you make it clear that it's a repro and don't try to pass it off as a real game! I have bought a few repro cartridges myself. Because I'm not a serious collector, I just want to enjoy the game. For those of us who don't want to pay ridiculous amounts of money, repro carts are the only way to enjoy the more rare games of the NES.

I just had a thought about this. Maybe what the employees do when they price these games is look them up on ebay and then cut and paste the ebay listing title onto the sticker printing software and accidentally copied a repro listing title. Just a thought.

If the Beginner's Basic and User's Reference Guide have good bindings (they fall apart pretty quickly after you start reading them) I'd pay a little more. Also if it has a nice video modulator without the RF forks ripped off and the sticky tape unused... I'd pay a bit more. Also, beige or black makes a difference to me. Most beige are V2.2 roms that have a third party cartridge lockout.

    • @Rayofficial13565
      @Rayofficial13565 7 лет назад

And if any of your joysticks are beige... I see those so infrequently I'm not really sure what they're worth but I'd pay more.

All of my reference guides are in 8/10 condition. They were never really used. Both boxed computers are black/silver, but I do have one beige unit. Joysticks are black. RF cables were in fine condition the last time I had them out of the box 20 years ago. I'm not sure what the sticky tape is, but I know we never stuck them on to a TV or anything. My dad would have never allowed that.
I also have an expansion box with a ram expansion, dual 360k floppies, and an IO controller for a printer. 3 speech synthesizers too. I think 2 cassette decks with IO cords.
Ideally I'd like to sell ALL of it to someone locally. Shipping on all of that stuff will cost someone a fortune.
BUT.. I could pretty easily part with one of the boxed systems if someone wanted to pay a fair price for it. $25 isn't worth the effort to double box it.

  • @buttguy

This would only "boil my fucking blood" if they gave them pennies on the dollar, told them it was a repro, and then sold it as an ORIGINAL for full market value. This doesn't "boil my fucking blood" because the employee, just like the customer, had the full ability to take 2 minutes to research, discover it was an original and its potential value, and fucked up anyway. Its a happy accident, all around, that resulted in this dude scoring an OG Panic Restaurant for a steal. People will forever be ignorant of any number of aspects of retro game collecting...i wouldn't expect every single employee to know their shit that well. What happened wasn't somebody taking advantage of a clueless customer...it was TWO totally clueless people handling the game, and getting it into the hands of somebody who knew what it was and what it was worth. Sounds pretty good to me as a fellow collector.

If you assume they don't know what they're doing, you should also assume they tried to look up the price online. Having no idea what "repro" meant, they would go with the more conservative price. Pricing in line with the more-conservative prices they find online would be standard practice -- to ensure they aren't stuck with a bunch of things so grossly over-priced that they would never sell. They don't claim to be experts. You're giving them too much flak!

I've somewhat pondered the question of replacing labels if the old one is in terrible condition. I was out shopping and came across a black Genesis cartridge with absolutely no label. I paid a dollar and it not only worked, but was a decent fighter. it was called eternal champions. I haven't found a proper label to replace the blank canvas, but wonder if that truly depreciates the value of a game MASSIVELY whereas it's the legit copy, just new label. should bring top/equal price. but I think 25 percent off is fair.

  • @Satan42

I agree that misdiagnosing it as a repro is a big problem. But I am not sure that I have a big problem with second hand stores selling repro games, assuming they disclose and price it accordingly.
I mean, if the game is out of print... Of course. Not a repro version of some current title in stores.
Eh... The more I think as I type, I guess it is a bad practice. I guess I am at a point that I wouldn't mind some repro carts in my collection (assuming it was priced cheap). Just as a means to play the games. But people can't be trusted to not take advantage of people, so I guess it is bad and Pat is correct.

  • @NeonPegasus1979

Technically, there's no difference between an official game and a repro, other than authenticity. Although it's still wrong, because people buy them thinking they're the real thing, when they're not. Although I think although LEGALLY, it would be a problem to sell reproductions and just tell people they're reproduction, there is nothing MORALLY wrong with it, since the devs aren't making money off the games anymore.

I want to put this out there because there seem to be too many people not grasping the situation.
Those of you who harp on Pat for not liking repros are not looking at the big picture. Repro is literally a candy coated term for a fake. Counterfeit. Fraudulent. He's a collector and has been a part of the hobby for way longer than most any of us here. With FAKE games circulating in the market it DAMAGES the hobby because this isn't like there's a store you can go to and get clearly counterfeit games if you want to save money on them. People make them look real FOR A REASON. To dupe people into spending shit loads of money on a FAKE item.
I doubt Pat would have an issue with them if people were making them for personal use. But that's the problem. People AREN'T. Even if they started out that way people get bored or desperate for cash so they use their fake and scam people out of cash.
Repro's are malicious to the hobby even if you don't personally feel that way. It's a fact. It would be like if people started making loads of fake Pokémon or Magic cards for personal use just to play on the cheap since they don't wanna spend big bucks on the expensive cards. Then get bored and now they have a bunch of useless cardboard. So they sell them to a local store under the pretense they are real, make cash and walk away.
Now if the store never realized they were fake, they're circulating FAKE cards into the blood stream of the hobby. Accidentally conning other people out of their cash.
One could say "Blame the store for not catching the mistake". No, I blame the fucker who MADE THE CARDS. It's THEIR fault for putting fakes out and devaluing the hobby.

usually multiple different games use the same board. I found a website that has the boards for all the nes carts and usually each one is used by a lot of different games.
