Revisit the small cutting Cottage Garden, make a gathering basket and plant seedlings

  • Although the Basket Cutting Garden is not producing many blooms yet, we need to tidy it and thin out the abundant foliage to make room for the seedlings we'll plant today.
    You'll need a gathering basket in a few weeks to collect your abundant flowers; so today, I'll show you a very simple, old-time version of a hands-free gathering basket you can make using any old basket and a walking cane. Correction on the name of the Petunia with the heart shape, it is a "Heartbeat" Petunia.

    Love your gathering baskets on sticks. What a cute old-timey idea. I also love your use of the spoon for transplanting. I use regular old forks the same way. I get a lot of hosta seedling volunteers in between flagstones on the north side of my house. When I see a seedling , I'll use my fork to pull it up and replant it somewhere else or pot it up and share.

      Kyra, I normally use a fork in the walkway, much easier with the pointy tips, but all I had in my pocket was the spoon. Maybe I should be looking closely for Hosta Babies.I don't think I've ever noticed any, but have lots of Hosta, hmmm.

    I would so love to meet the extradamery Jeri Landers and visit Hop Along Hollow. I had hoped in October but I believe JC Campbell has been cancelled. I just today watched Pipitys Dollhouse don’t know how I missed it earlier. I know there can’t be one everyday so repeatedly watch others. You are a blessing during this crazy time but I believe all will be well again. Best, Carolyn

    Love to see you working in the garden and just exactly how you dig up those tiny seedlings when they’re growing all together like that....and with a spoon! It’s amazing how simple growing seeds really is. We complicate the process with all the “must-do’s” and yes maybe at times there is a best practice that promotes success but God created all living things to want to grow and thrive. I am amazed at all the little volunteers I get every spring. I really don’t need to buy tomato plants, i get so many of them coming up from previous years seeds I’ve got to discard a bunch. Do you give much thought to whether your volunteers are from a hybrid or an open pollinated variety? You’re beds are so full and beautiful, do you tend to plant annuals closer than suggested? I think my beds looks so sparse this time of year but I know things do fill out quite a lot. Just love your peaceful way of gardening and going with the flow of nature. I had to laugh, at one point during your video when the geese were honking in the back group the caption said “laughter”. Maybe they were really laughing! All your little critters do sound so happy. What a lovely garden you’ve grown. A lifetime of beautiful work you are bearing the fruit of Jeri!

    • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow
      @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow  5 лет назад +1

      Theresa, you are so right, it doesn't need to be complicated with seed starting, just ask a weed! I hate tossing out volunteers, but I have SO many of certain plants, I just wish I had a new gardener to give them to. I don't give much thought to whether to whom the volunteers came from, if I need zinnias or primrose, I just use them. I've learned with some plants NOT to put them too close, I really had to thin out the poppies and larkspur because they were not growing tall enough. But other plants I just squish together, if I need to separate them later I can. WOW, I did not know you could get captions on my video! That's good news... and yes, I am sure the critters were laughing!

    The basket on the walking stick is unique....thank you. I’m going to make two of them and plant trailing flowers in them and have them as height in my protege garden.. great way to add interest and use up some old baskets I wove many years ago.
    I just found out that sunflowers are another flower that the bees love. I started some unusual colored ones and plan on putting them in my butterfly garden around the butterfly house we made last year.
    Do you dry flowers for winter arrangements.?

    • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow
      @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow  5 лет назад

      That's a good idea to add height with the baskets.
      I do dry flowers, not many.. Lavender, allium, Yarrow and Queen Annes Lace. This year I'll have SO many poppy heads to use in arrangements. Love the new colors in Sunflowers, we tried a rust colored one last year, so much fun; Sunflowers are just happy plants!

    What you did with sowing the snapdragons....my grand baby wanted to “help” me with my herbs and scattered a whole pack of basil seeds all in one pot before I could stop him. I just left em, they’ve ALL germinated. I’m assuming I can just do the same as you did, right? Just divide them out and replant them elsewhere? I’m just not sure how basil likes that kind of thing.

      Redlily, I know, it's very weird. I had to look it up to make sure it WAS a Bachelor Button. Also known as Mountain Bluet, a member of the Cornflower family. The seeds are identical to the common Bachelor B's, but the leaves are completely different. When the flowers bloom, they look like BB's, but twice as big. I think I prefer the traditional Cornflowers and now I have these GIGANTIC plants all over the place!
