    In this video I'll be talking about how Eric Johnson uses spread voiced triads (or open voiced triads) in his melodic playing. More specifically, I'll be giving you some insight on how he uses them in the live into from Cliffs Of Dover, which he plays in Austin, TX. We'll also touch on Drop 2 voicings, what they are, and how he uses them. Spread voiced triads are a wonderful tool for emotive playing, and this particular piece demonstrates that perfectly! There's a lot that you can learn from this piece, so listen up, and get your guitar ready!!

    I really enjoyed your way to teaching this piece of Eric Johnson Cliffs of Dover intro. You explained so well and in details especially for beginner and intermediate player. I can understand it and apply it myself. I found you don’t just tell us how to position chords by also tell us why, which is very important. Can you put a video about Andy Timmons ? His music is very melodic too. Thank you again for sharing with us !

    one quick question : if playing in the key of GMajor what scale options does one have other than the modes of g major and the G major pentatonic scale...Can one use other pentatonic scales too like C major pent and D major pent and other minor pentatonic scales that belong to respective major and minor chords like A minor as they are in the G major key ... while we are soloing or what is the basic principle territory to play solos in a key ..eg key of G major...??

    • @TKanal3
      @TKanal3 5 лет назад +2

      voiceinthen0ise if you are in c major (you can use any major scale c is just easy cause there arent flats/sharps) your c is 1 d is 2 e is 3 f is 4 g is 5 a is 6 b is 7. BUT you can use any note as your „home note“. This changes the „scale“ while still using the same notes. If you would, for example use d as your home not d would be 1 e 2 f 3 g 4 a 5 b 6 and c 7. This is the dorian scale. You can do this with every note from the major scale. C major, d dorian, e phrygian, f lydian, g mixolydian, a aeolian and b lucrian (might have misspelled those names). You can ANY of those modes. Its about the notes in the scale not the home note

    • @abstract200
      @abstract200 4 года назад

      @@TKanal3 he asked 'other than the modes' lol...not for an explanation of what modes are. We musn't forget, in western music the underlying principle is the use of CHORDS. This will determine very much your note choice; given a certain chord progression, what notes will work and which won't depending on the chords being played. In Eastern music on the other hand, the principle is the SCALE and its sound, mood or even spiritual meaning. It's how you play the scale, which notes you emphasize and how you improvise within a set structure belonging to that scale or mode as we call it. Oh and btw voiceinthenoice, in the key of G mayor we can play G minor pentatonic too!! It's called the Blues.....

    Looking at the harmonic section. Eric never slides his finger in the Austin video. You can pick up that note at harmonic G-17. Sounds like he's going G(H)17, E19, D(H)17, A17 G17

  • @abstract200

    Great insight into Eric's use of chords and voicings . Luckily I didn't need this video having transcribed it easily with the help of the live performance video on RUclips. (where would we still be without it?), but I'm sure it will benefit a lot of players out there. Unfortunately the only part I'm not sure about is the harp style harmonics section, but I'm pretty sure that's not how he played it (13:11). The first note is definately a harmonic and I don''t hear (or see) a slide either. Eric is a master of this technique and this particular lick is a great example of it.

    • @abstract200
      @abstract200 5 лет назад +1

      As a matter of fact, I just solved it XD. Here's how he played it: Bar the 17th fret with index finger and put ringvinger on 19th fret, 1st string,. like an A minor add9 shape. Then pluck the artificial harmonics an octave higher: first play an artificial harmonic on the 3d string (!) then pluck the 1st string (no a.h.), next pluck the 4th and 5th strings with artificial harmonics and pluck the 3d string (no a.h.) to finish the sequence (5 notes in total). You're welcome! ( I also offer lessons btw. (just kidding haha)
