- In this scene from Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte," the Queen of Night played by Diana Damrau and Pamina, her daughter portrayed by Dorothea Röschmann are having a debacle concerning Pamina killing the Queen's enemy, Sarastro. I do not own the copyright to this video. That is owned by BBC and Opus Arte. I highly recommend that you purchase the DVD of this performace from tinyurl.com/magicflute

This is how it goes down when I don't clean my room and my mom and I get into a dispute.
Clear from California Precisely - and trust me: It will get much worse later in life!
one world, one mom
Omg I nearly choked on my food after reading your comment :D
You made my day! 😂😂
She asks you to kill your father...? ;-)
It's not just the spectacular singing, it's the acting too. She owns the role like no one else.
Diana acts to the back of the house. On video it appears she is overacting but she isn’t. She wants to be sure the person at the top all the way in the back row can see her.
I think Mozart would be impressed
Youre so right…..
This acting and opera is just beyond belive in its beauty……..
In my opinion, Cristina Deutekom sang this aria best. Such energy in the voice, perfect pronunciation, perfect diction, absolutely everything. Also, regarding the acting part, facial expressions, gestures, movements, she performed everything beautifully and left her heart on stage.
Mozart would be happy to see her get the "terrifying note" right!
What terrifying note you are referring to? Didn't she get it right?
@@filangimn1746 The highest
The Bb?!
@@filangimn1746 they called it "terrifying" because it's notoriously difficult to do, like as a dancer I would call Odile's infamous coda "terrifying" not because I don't like it (in fact I love it), but because I have to do 32 fouettés and that's hardddd😅 I imagine this is the same
What's really astounding about Diana Damrau's Queen of the Night is how her body language is strained and furious for the performance, but her "instrument" is relaxed - it HAS to be to sing this aria. It's a delicate balance and this is an expert example. Really fantastic. I get full body chills every time I come back for a listen.
I once watched a video tha5 directed this performance, and it said that a lot of the apparent furiousness is also straight up singing posture to support what she is singing, so it is doubly astounding that she was able to turn necessary stance into an acting performance as she sang. Other examples of Singers doing this aria showed that not everyone can put in that dramatic performance while singing.
@@TheMimiSard 3 singers came on top as Queen of the night: Diana Damrau for the best acting performance, by far. Cristina Deutekom, her voice seal the game without breaking a sweat but she act like a menhir. and finally Edda Moser 'cause she curses the sh*t out of you and you have no choice but to kill Sarastro...
In terms of costume, acting and singing, this has got to be the best version I've ever seen in my life. Those eyes! :O
Agree...everything outstanding. Absolutely beautiful.
I totally agree!
Yes! And what a difference it makes when the actors actually speak German!
I completely agree!
Yes, undoubtedly! I agree totally and you said: THOSE EYES! How expressive she was! Beautiful!
I get out of breath just watching her sing that. Her lungs must take up like 90% of her abdomen.
madock345 hahahahahahaha 🤣
It doesn't take too much breath to sing high notes actually.the higher you go,the less breath you need.
@@tealyan But the higher you sing the harder it gets to hold the tone in place. (as a Tenor I can imagine the stress she must have had)
@@thecritic69420 i believe you man,i have no idea how this works,i just heard it from someone that the higher you go,the less breath you'd need to sing the notes🤷♂️
@@tealyan It's actually the opposite; the higher you go the more air you need.
This makes it clear German is not an ugly language, but a beautiful one. Happy that I have the privilege to know it and write texts in it.
@Psalm 27 what?

You are right, German is a beautiful language. I am Dutch myself and Dutch & German belong to the branche of West - Germanic languages, so our languages are very close to each other.
But Mozart was not german. He was austrian and it has same minor diffences in the pronounciation.
Yes, she sings and act in german, but the origin was austrian. As a german/austrian/swiss you hear the diffences in the germanic languages.

Richtig 😉👋🏻
Not only is her voice astonishing, but the acting is truly masterful. This is the best version of this Aria I have ever come across
I think, her singing is fantastic. But her sceneplay is an unmatched performance. No Queen on Night i saw so far, has this expression, or movement. The most of them just stand there and sing.
+Raye H Hiba's version wasn't very good. She was straining on most of the higher notes, and her vibrato isn't suited for opera. I love her as a Lebanese pop singer, but I wouldn't ask her to sing opera.
I agree, it's even more impressive that she could play the part of a livid mother considering how "jolly" (at least to me) the song sounds.
@@womtambsgans That's the privilege of not knowing the lyrics. "If Sarastro doesn't die a painful death through you, I'll reject you as a daughter" is one of the less jolly themes in the Zauberflöte.
@@peterderpanda2922 I'm talking about how the intensity and sharpness of her cadence can almost sound poppy or fanfare-ish, not the lyrics.
Exactly. Deutekom's performance is flawless as well but she looks like she's in a trance.
I have heard many sopranos sing this aria, but none of them achieved perfection the way Damrau does.
Well, there was Erika Köth, Moser too.
Erika Köth did a creditable job, but she took the aria at a much faster pace...saving her voice maybe? Who knows. As for Moser, she was much too screechy for my taste.
We do agree Damrau was good; but the question is: Is the aria not meant to be screechy? It is after all meant to be sung by his sister in law!
Good point. But Damrau still takes first prize in my book; her voice is as clear as fine crystal and she has an effortless quality that you do not often see in singers attempting this aria.
True but her voice sounds much better in other arias - such as Violetta in La Traviata.
As Susanna she is good enough, but is more vulnerable than a feisty Bartoli.
But then again: It is a matter of taste. Personally I always like it best when a performer can show me something in a part that I hadn't seen/heard before. Damraus Violetta is much different from Anna Netrebko's - both within the limits of interpretation, but very different.
She *_IS_* The Queen of Night!
I am literally 100% amazed by the sounds of the queen of night in this chorus. When i heard it the first time i could not believe, that this was just one human voice!
+Maxi Schmidt SAME HERE
You should listen to Kim singing the 'Dolls Aria' at the MET.
I have almost no idea what they are saying, but just the way they make it sound...Diana Damrau, this scene, and this aria are the reason I want to learn German.
As a German I can tell you, that even we don´t understand everything they sing. The singing changes a lot the pronunciation of the words.
this is the main translation of the text.. some parts are repeating.. but so you can understand the meaning :)
The vengeance of hell boils in my heart;
Death and despair blaze around me!
If not by you[r intercession] Sarastro feels the pains of death,
Then you will be my daughter nevermore.
Outcast be forever,
Forsaken be forever,
Shattered be forever
All the bonds of nature
If not by you[r intercession] Sarastro turns pale [in death]!
Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye, gods of vengeance, hear the mother's oath!

karlo2711 Yeah half the time nimmermehr sounds like Nomme mir.
HighKingTurgon Hear Damraus U's - as in NatUr, MUtter and SchwUr. That is picked up - not only from the midrif; but from the pelvis with al the weight (or rather in German: Wucht - not Schwung - there is no Schwung in that aria) of raw brutal violence.
The makeup here takes care of Damrau being crosseyed at times; but can't quite cope with her dimples. There is an immense attention to detail. There are no mitigating circumstances in this aria.
The i's a e's are not really usefull here.
Thomas Borgsmidt Not sure what you're addressing, but I am immensely fond of this performance, and in particular of Damrau's technique. I discovered her only in the last year or two and she's become my favorite soprano worldwide. So if her diction is occasionally not everything I expect, I'll live.
In my opinion; What makes this performance by Diana Damrau so impressive, is that she doesn't just sing it well and struggle to act the part as others have. Diana looks, moves and projects the fury and menace of the Queen of Night down to her very eyeballs. The choice to shadow her eyes so was also excellent.
I love it. I never really thought of the Queen of Night as a hottie before this. If they'd tried to make this sound more modern, it would have ruined it.
At 2m50s it is astonishing that a human can make those sounds. It's beautiful and shocking at the same time.

PerfectHandVideos On first watch I had to pause there and walk around incoherently cursing, beyond intoxicating.

PichDextro Du bist so gruselig... Du bist überall😂
This is the most difficult aria ever both vocally and histrionically speaking, incredible! The best version ever, she conveys the emotion and it's not light, it's powerful and demanding
There is no such thing, as ,,the most difficult aria"...
The difficulty depends on the type of voice, and of course, the technic. I'm trying to say that every voice has hard and easy arias. Example: For coloraturas like Diana and myself, the hard ones are these, which diapason is really low and even harder if it's slow and immobilized.☺️
Her turning around at 2:52 is the best part about this performance. There’s so much energy and emotion. Loooove it
i just realized, you can see the movement in her torso with every breath she supports on those high notes. the physical ability it takes to sing this being VISIBLE is amazing
I hate when people cannot wait until music has finished playing and the start to clap!
Diana Damrau gave a stellar performance. Her voice is phenomenal, and so is her acting (the way she yelled "Kein Wort!" ["Not a word!"] was extremely well-delivered).
Jacob and then just launched into the aria right afterwards.
Singing in your native language always helps performing, according to the lyrics.

Her acting is so powerful and so perfectly cruel, and then she begins singing, and it's so beautiful like a bird being set free. But her words are so dark. It purrfectly conveys her insanity and desire for power. Magnificent.

*aria
Aria of the opera Magic Flaute.
Don't you think it's a self-fulfilling prophecy saying you don't like opera? Anyone who can sit through this could easily sit through the whole of The Magic Flute (Der Holle Rache is just one highlight among many), and probably the other great Mozart operas. Then there's Puccini, and other low-hanging fruit. I can understand being turned off by Wagner, but a lot of opera is REALLY accessible.
Puccini is really an opera lover's composer. I love opera but his stuff can be a bit much even for me. But Die Zauberflote is a really good opera for beginners, mainly because it isn't technically an opera and so is lighter.
Same!
The shift in the leitmotif from major to minor is just so magnificent, and her performance, simply breathtaking!

Dale S actually that's nothing we would say in German. It's just a written phrase of this act
Dale S I can’t translate this perfectly, since it’s only half a sentence, but “Siebenfacher Sonnenkreis” is “sevenfold sunsphere” (just something from the opera). The best I can do is “Sarastro will finally (insert verb) only with the sevenfold sun sphere”. Hope that helps. But yes, this is not something we would normally say.

One of my most favorite arias. Unbelievable performance. Perfect!
This is a magnificent performance by Ms. Damrau, both theatrically and vocally. Her characterization of the Queen's evil insanity and the crispness of her vocals are stunning. Her performance is perfect except for a small flaw at 4:40 where her voice goes soft. I can't imagine that this performance will ever be surpassed.
I don't know what exactly "going soft" is supposed to mean.
She's just going down in tessitura and she's a coloratura soprano (deep part of the voice is most likely not very strong), it's a lower note than the ones before (low ones of course don't carry as well as high ones; naturally), which is probably why in comparison it sounds weak of "soft", when the technique is absolutely as stunning as before.
@@dianaemilia485 the issue is that she's in head voice and refused to switch to chest voice on the lower notes (as she should). from an artistic perspective, it might sound better like this in your opinion, but it would not carry in a massive opera house

I read in one of the feature articles that Mozart wanted to compose operas in order to rival the Italians.
But honestly, I say it with humility, dearest Mozart, you Austrians and you Germans are equally good and equally talented.

We're doing The Magic Flute this semester for our opera college production (end of March) in English. Ended up here after Googling to see if I was right about the aria in the Volvo commercial being from The Magic Flute. Amazing performance.
