It's a difficult choice. One is taking a big chance using using the music in the background. Instant demonetization and a good chance it will be banned in the US - maybe even taken down.
Probably one of the best songs ever written and my Dobbie "Go To" on the guitar Every night. And, the 50th Anniversary of "The Captain and Me" was March 2, 1973. Just so happened I was 14 on that day. I have the Anniversary vinyl and it really resonates on the Rega!!
As a non-musician and non-vocalist, I loved watching this because the song “South City Midnight 🌙 Lady” is SO WONDERFUL! Enjoyed watching you play and explain the chords. Cheers!
Awesome Mark, I just saw the Doobies in Atlanta this past Tues 11/12/19, bucket list thing to see Tom Johnson play live. South City is one of my favorite Simmons songs , they played it beautifully , they are amazing musicians , very talented band. Thanks again for this awesome lesson.
My pleasure Tim. I saw the Doobies a long time ago - without Tom Johnston. They were great, but I didn't like their lineup as much at that time. I like the more driving sound of Tom's songs. Patrick Simmons is great too. Michael McDonald is a great musician, but not as much to my taste always ... although I absolutely love Taking It To the Streets. This song was always one of my favorites of theirs. Beautiful song.
Jeff McErlain just did a live stream on open G tuning. This song got into my head and I went looking for a lesson on it. As soon as I saw "Mark Zabel" I knew which one I would watch. Great job. So clear and easy to understand. (On another note, last time we went to see the Doobies we were told "Sorry folks, this is a no dancing section" Are you kidding me??? the Doobies and no dancing?)
Thanks! Jeff is a great teacher! ... and WHAT??? No Dancing to the Doobies? They must not have played "Takin' It To The Streets" or 1/2 of their repertoire. That's crazy! Thanks for stopping by!
I really like the way you put this one together, Mark... The track, and the lyrics sung in the background really helps in putting the song together... Thanks so much for the lesson... Take care...
Thanks Bruce! I rarely do this with the singing in the background, because it's a big risk. The risk is whether the copyright owner will ban the video or allow it. This video has already been "dinged" for copyright, but at least right now is allowed to play. I have to say, it's really painful when you've spent a number hours recording, editing, uploading, writing copy for, creating a thumbnail, and so forth ... and then it gets taken down. So unfortunately, singing in a video (whether it's me or someone else) is risky. I hope you'll forgive me for not doing it very often. We'll see. If the copyright situation gets better, maybe I can do it more often. But it seems as if it's getting much, much worse now.
Wow, I had forgotten about that...It is a strange ordeal.. You see videos of the actual artist playing, and singing a song, and the person that is making the video doesn't get zapped... Maybe because they are not monetizing?? I know I see a lot of instructors listing the lesson, "In the fashion of SRV", for instance.. I am sorry, it is a great lesson... Thanks Mark...@@MarkZabel
Oh yes, no sweat Bruce. I just wanted to let you know why I don't do it all of the time. Sure would make my life easier than either making or obtaining backing tracks. Well, it *is* strange. If you don't publish the video, it's hard to know what and how videos are monetized. This one, for instance, I cannot choose *not* to monetize unless I challenge the claim. If I leave it up it must be monetized ... not necessarily for me, but for someone else. Sometimes it's shared between the creator and the copyright holder. So I'm not sure what happens when somebody simply posts a copyrighted song and then puts, say, lyrics on the video. I could certainly do "in the style of" lessons. It's much easier. And there's no copyright issues. For the student I think it's a wash; some things are better (learning the guitar more for yourself or in a more system-based approach), but sometimes it's good to actually try to get what's done on record - fairly close in any event. But I have found people generally don't like "in the style of" lessons as much. Just like people want tab, whether it's good for one's playing or not. And I try to do what people want within reason ... and as long as it seems fun to me. In any event, copyright is a strange bird here. I don't really know if the people making the claims own the copyright or not. I don't bother challenging. These are manual claims, not RUclips algorithms. I just barely have enough views to bother with. But someone like, say, Paul Davids, he has 1,000,000's of views and followers, so he's a real target. He has had some of *his own music - invented by him* getting copyright claims. That's pretty rough, because I think he does this full time.
best part about this is once you're down at open G start playing some Stone songs too. make the most of your tune down guitar LOL. I like the demo on this one the hybrid picking lot of people miss that when they play this at Patrick Simmons style finger style some don't do the full blown finger style Pat did but your hybrid picking works very efficiently. it's also amazing how much Doobie Brothers stuff is friendly you don't get ding for copyright or blocked. unlike say Mr Henley The Beatles Fleetwood Mac Black Sabbath AC/DC the bon years and any more.
Bravo! You've fine tuned me on this sweet song. When I play this by myself, I play the steel guitar lick that's between the first chorus and second verse using the natural harmonics on the 4th and 5th frets. Kinda 'imitation lemonade' but it works!
Well done, Mark - you can really see the improvements you have made over the years. You were good when you started this channel but have gotten noticeably better as time has passed. (I hope that came off as the compliment it was intended to be.)
Thanks Garry. I'll think about doing the solo. Sure is a pretty song. I've done a bunch of Doobie Brothers lately, so I may hold off on it for now, but it's on the list for consideration!
Truly lovely song. Nobody did it like Joni Mitchell. I'll put it on my to-do list. BTW, you probably already know this song, but if you're not familiar with Paul Brady's "Arthur McBride" you should check it out. Thanks for your suggestion!
I'll think about it. Might be good for the membership, but not so much for RUclips. I like the song, but it's pretty obscure and has several, quite involved guitar parts. But I *DO* like the song, so I'll think about it!
You really should do more hybrid picking songs on your acoustic. I play this one finger style, but your technique is really great Mark. Very fluid. :-)
Congrats to Fenderman73 for winning the weekly rock quiz! Join me tomorrow (Sunday, May 5) at 12:00 noon Eastern US time for our weekly live stream. We'll be covering the versatile Chuck Berry lick. Plus, we'll have another rock quiz - a guest rock quiz!! And of course we'll have our usual guitar rap. See you there! ruclips.net/video/y_p7KEzYG5E/видео.html&feature=share

Makes a world of difference with the music in the background and the complete play thru first. Thanks

@@MarkZabel My God for such a simple tune that's a difficult song to get down playing that way, I'm half nuts!
@@lpjbird You could just strum it if you don't want to play the fingerpicking patterns. It's greatly simplified by the tuning.
@@MarkZabel I know but..I want to play it his way so I must practice, practice, practice. And with your video it’ll happen. 🙏

Thanks for your kind comment. It really is a gem of a song. I'm so glad you enjoyed playing it!
Mark you make it look so easy. Great lesson, thank you!
Thanks Ron!
Mark, thanks so much for taking the time to share all the work you did on this great classic.
Very much appreciated
You're welcome. I agree, it's a beautiful song. Under-appreciated.
As always, great lesson Mark. Such a beautiful song. Thanks.
Thanks Mark. Yes, this one is a beauty for sure!
What a great song. One of my all time favorites. That’s was an absolutely awesome rendition brother to include a great lesson. Thanks so much!!

Cool, thanks!
This is an excellent tutorial on how to play this beautiful song
Thanks Al!
Cool man. I love open g. Such a comfortable pleasant vibe
Me too, but I rarely tune it there. Not sure why, because you're right - it's really fun to play and just fool around with.
Damn, that was great! 👏👏👏👏
Thank you!
Very cool! Thanks for the lesson, Mark.
Thanks Gee Mac! Glad you liked it!
One of my all-time favorite Doobie Brothers songs! The next song on he album is great as well...Snake Man!
Yeah, it's a good one off of a really good album!
snake man came out on the album prior that little one minute and 35 seconds is what closed off the classic Toulouse Street.
