Hey gang! I did the 3rd solo - the main solo - right here! • How to Play Takin' Car...
“Takin’ Care of Business”, a song written by Randy Bachman who also sang lead on the track, was a huge hit in 1974 for Bachman Turner Overdrive. While it never hit #1 (#12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 was its peak), it has become a “slacker anthem,” and the phrase “Takin’ care of business” or TCB has become a well-used phrase.
Here’s the TAB: www.dropbox.com/s/oq3abckagpg...
Here's a COOLER VERSION OF THE TAB! (Thanks Rex!) www.dropbox.com/s/n8gng8kzrqn...
Here are some other tidbits from songfacts.
Bachman explained to that he came up with the idea for the song in the late-'60s while he was still a member of The Guess Who. Bachman was listening to C-Fox radio on the way to the club and heard the DJ say they were "Takin' Care of Business," which gave him the idea for the hook.
Elvis Presley loved the saying - he wore a "TCB" necklace and called his backing group "The TCB Band." Aretha Franklin alluded to it in her hit cover of "Respect," where she sang, "Take care, TCB."
While the song title implies an industrious responsibility, a closer listen reveals that this song is more of a slacker anthem. The singer is presumably unemployed, and he "loves to work at nothing all day."
Throughout the early '90s, this was used in commercials for Office Depot to promote their business services. Hillary Clinton used it at many of her campaign events in 2008 when she ran for president of the US (the first time).
The song is used in the show American Dad.
A cover of this song was included on the first rap album released by a major label. It happened in 1980 when Kurtis Blow recorded it for his self-titled album.
This holds the record for largest guitar jam in history. On May 7, 1994, Bachman led 1,322 mostly-amateur guitarists in a performance of this that lasted 68 minutes. The event was held in Vancouver.
The Guess Who played this on their 2000 reunion tour. Bachman was in The Guess Who before leaving to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive.
Randy Bachman and C.F Turner reunited in 2000 for an appearance on The Simpsons that featured this song. At a concert, Homer heckles the band until they play this, then tells them to "Get to the 'working overtime' part."
Bachman's autobiography is titled Randy Bachman, Takin' Care Of Business. - Видеоклипы
"distortion NOT to melt people faces off" :DDD
with only that one line you got me...one of the greatest online guitar teachers for me, sure. :)
thank you!
Thanks a ton!
One of my all-time fav BTO songs! Certain nuisances of the strumming, etc. you gave me made all the diff in the world. Thank you!!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching and for the kind comment!
Ahhhh...70's BTO...it's been so long since I played that song I forgot how...Thanks man...
My pleasure Dale. Thanks for watching!
Many thanks to you, and for that matter, others musicians like you, who put these videos up. They're a great help to people like me. I've gigged on and off for many years doing rock/pop/blues type stuff and, while I've always gotten good feedback on my playing, particularly my improvisational skills, my biggest weak point is my lack of ability and willingness to sit down and pick out guitar parts note for note. I'm just too distractible and impatient. So, thank you again, you've helped me to bring a finer focus to songs where I need to a bit more accurate. Cheers!
You're very welcome. Thanks for the kind comment!
Bachman Turner Overdrive such a Canadian iconic band. I love this song and attempted it a couple years ago but now my chops are more proficient I am ready to lay a beatin' on this song. Thanks Mark for a really kick ass tune. I want to play this with my band.
No problem! Kick some ass with it!!

Great, been playing this song 30+ years and never quite got it! Clever how Bachman went from minor to major pentatonic scales from lick to lick!
Thanks. Yes, deceptively simple!

Great song writer & Band !!!!
Hello Mark,
I'm a fairly new subscriber to your channel here but I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your feeds man. Your explanations are clear and precise and very easy to understand, thanks again so much. This is such a great song as well, I love old 60's / 70's classic rock :)
Wow, thanks so much Thomas! Nice to get such kind feedback!
@@MarkZabel , my pleasure man. These videos make learning how to play songs so much easier than listening to the song and figuring it all out, it’s the very least we can do Mark!!!!
You look a lot better in 2021!
Thanks!
Muchas gracias. Super bien explicado.
Salu2
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
thank! ur awesome!
Thanks!!
Yeah! Thanks for getting the right pick up notes as many miss
You bet. Thanks for watching!
Awesome tutorial Mark, Navy Mark...
Thanks!!
Reminds me of my high school days. Wow. I thought I knew everything. What little did I truly know. It sure was fun though
Ha! Yes, it's always interesting going back to what you "know" - gets me every time too!! :)
Great Lesson Mark. Lots of Fun. Now I just need to train my pinkie to do that 4 fret stretch, which looks quite easy for you. Thanks, I always loved this song. For some reason, I hadn't been receiving your stuff, which is why you haven't heard from me.
Hi. Great to hear from you again! I was wondering where you were! :)
wow mark you are good ,the way you play that i would think that you are canadian lol randy would be proud lol !!!
LOL! Well I *did* spent some Summers growing up in Windsor - right across the bridge from Detroit. Maybe that was it, eh?
Sorry about leaving the coaching lesson so abruptly but I had something come up. But after your brief aside re: TCB had to pop over for a view. Great lesson but I might have enjoyed your songfacts just as much. For us newbies I think the little stretch is great for developing some hand strength incrementally. As always Thanks, needed one like this, abit easier to get under one's fingers to get out of a learner's funk.
Thanks Dan!
Get your slop on,,love it
LOL! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey Mark. Another great lesson. I may be able to play this one since you said that it could be played sloppy. lol. I grew up listening to BTO. Thanks for all the work that you put into these videos. It really helps guys like me out. A couple of months back i requested that you do a lesson on I can't tell you why by the Eagles in which you did very promptly. I was learning that one slowly but it seems to have disappeared. I was wondering if it has been taken down or if I was overlooking it.I was able to learn on that song because it is fairly slow. lol Anyway thanks again for doing that lesson,at least I can play the first few lines. Keep up the great teaching that you do. I always look forward to watching your videos and learning from them.
Paul Higgs Hi Paul. I'll have an announcement and suggestion for Eagles fans tomorrow. So stay tuned!
Very cool guitar Mark, looks like a Les Paul and a Telecaster got tangled up one night.
Yes, it's a Reverend Buckshot. Great guitar. They've gotten more expensive as of late. Very versatile and well built.
sweeeeeet! thanks TONS for that ;-) his daughter (Randy Bachman) is in my city in Canada
You're Canadian??? :) How could I have guessed it? I spent much of my time during my youth in Windsor and other places in Essex county Ontario. I don't get there often enough these days. Anything you would like to request from another Canadian band? (Guess Who maybe or Chiliwack or Loverboy or Rush even?)
Sweet :-) I live in Lethbridge (alberta, the western province above Montana) Never been that far east to Ontario... heard it's nice:-) .LOL, Randy's Daughter, Lori-Leigh and her family lives in our neighborhood here. Her son and my daughter are best buddies. small cooool world sometimes. As for requests, Since you did my all-time BTO fav- TCB. Some of my fav Canadian bands:The Guess Who (American Woman)and
Rush (subdivisions), But all time Favorite Canadian: April Wine...Amazing and amazing live! (Say Hello- **Fav**, or , Tonight Is a Wonderful Time to Fall in Love, or. I Like to Rock, or, Sign of the Gypsy Queen- (heavily played in California when I lived there years ago for a while). Anyways. thanks for all the great lessons and nice advice you offer. Maybe if I keep practicing, my wife might even like some of my rock songs, lol.
You good at that
Thanks Stanley!
Nice!
Glad you liked it. Thanks for the kind comment!
I had no idea Al Bundy could shred! Well done!
Ha ha! That's one I haven't heard before ... seriously ... and I've heard a lot. Glad you enjoyed it!
I played this song at Burton cummings house on his childhood piano while he was in the kitchen he came out and looked at me and told me to leave his house NOW!
Hilarious! Hope you were invited back later on.
@@MarkZabel yes later he phone me to come back and finish up working on his pinball machines up stairs he said he had a rough night going to sleep and was quite edgy, really I did not know if it was that or my playing that set him off he told me he did not want to hear anything that has to do with randy bachman, since they were not speaking to each other at the time in 1999.
You become an honorary Canadian when you play this.
glen wallace Good to know. I've always been fond of my visits to Canada over the years. Thanks!
Eh?
You much be a mind reader or have ESP something another because I was just working on TCOB last night. Your a great teacher and my playing is better due to watching your lessons. A big thank you for sharing. A request if you are into hard rocking bar room blues check out the late great Eddy Shaver. A kid who grew up hanging around Dicky Betts with his father Billy Joe. He sure could play a guitar. He's all over youtube and I would love to see someone do a lesson on his, "Just Can't beat Jesus Christ" song. Again, thank you.
Ha! Yes, I have ESP!! :) Glad you liked the video. I will check out Eddy Shaver. Thanks!
Sweet lookin guitar.
I like it too. It's a Reverend Buckshot. Very versatile guitar. Extremely well built too.
Thanks Mark, for doing this our Canadian government should give you a year's supply of maple syrup. How about some April Wine songs?
Thanks Ray! Here's what I've got from April Wine for now: ruclips.net/video/FB59dV49QN0/видео.html but I'll do more ... maybe Roller or I Like to Rock or Sing of the Gypsy Queen.
I've also got Undun and Doucette's "Mama Let Him Play" (yes, the solo too). So you could check those for authenticity in the meantime. Lots of good rock out of Canada! Americans should appreciate it more!!
@@MarkZabel thanks Mark, I do like to rock for sure, take care.
Far oot eh!
That cross eyed look at the end of the riff had me dyin lol
LOL! That was the intention!! :)
@@MarkZabel I figured but it was definitely funny!
@@mgw4205 Yes. I'm kind of disappointed more people didn't comment on it. So no worries!
Hey Mark, what model guitar are you using? Super cool lesson as always!
You got it right in your next comment - Reverend Buckshot!
hi Mark, great lesson, that is an interesting guitar?
Thanks. It's a Reverend Buckshot. Great guitar. Extremely solid and versatile.
Mark
Great lesson, thanks for doing this classic!
Any chance you could do "escape" by Rupert Holmes? There are not any good lessons on this great song.
Hmmm, Escape. Okay. I'm having a hard time remembering the guitar, but I give it a listen. If I can do it, I'll do it! :)
Once again Mark, great lesson. Thank you. How do you like that Reverend?
Thanks Johnny. Love the Reverend!
Musican Fishin, right on! luv the Reverend. what's up with all the "tab" requests? develop your ear, PRACTICE.
Right on brother!
I'm sloppy all right !!! Randy played it to sound sloppy unpurpose, but believe me, he's a genius !!!!
Oh yeah, for sure. It's hard to get that perfect sloppiness. Jimmy Page had it down perfectly in stuff like "Since I've Been Loving You." I definitely don't mean it as a put-down to Randy at all. He's awesome!
@@MarkZabel It's in the bending !!!
Can you do Keep On Loving You,Can't Fight This Feeling, and Take It On The Run by R.E.O. Speedwagon
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll see about doing one of those in a little while.
Why did you skip the 1st solo break? That is awesome. Can you demo that one too?
Maybe. I'll put it on the to-do list ... very long! Thanks for the suggestion though. Much appreciated.
Ya cool i kinda dig this actually....it must be that non tele tele ..cheers..thanks
Yeah, I'm still putting together my tele build. Screwed up the bridge and have to re-drill. Oh well ... learning experience I guess. Not like I don't have another guitar to play.
@@MarkZabel i think you could rock a string on a cigar box bro.....you got some nice axes tho, not a doubt
Is that Body of the guitar as uncomfortable as it looks to hold....Thought about getting that one but it sure looks uncomfortable. Thanks for the video....sounds great.
Thank you! No, actually it's quite comfortable to hold. The bottom horn is more angular and shorter cut than a Tele which I think gives the illusion that it's "wobbly" or uncomfortable. When holding the guitar it's like a more comfortable Tele because it has a "tummy cut" in the back.
If you want to put the guitar down though, you need a stand, because the base of the guitar is slanted just a little. I made the mistake of leaning it against my amp and ... CRASH!
In any event, I'm a fan of Reverend Guitars. Well-built and they sound good. This one used to be my #1 guitar. Not so much these days, but I still really like it!
@@MarkZabel THANK YOU for such a fast response!
Love your channel!
@@TheRycooder My pleasure and thank you!!
Cool Guitar! What is it? Cool lesson too!
Thanks! It's a Reverend Buckshot. Great guitar!
good clean quick lesson for a fun song! also looks like you lost weight!
Thanks Dan! Although I'm not sure about that last part!!
I see it’s similar to the way to the intro Paranoid is
Interesting.
Every time this song comes on the radio I promptly change the channel. This song has been used on so many commercials that I just assume it's another commercial.
LOL! This video was brought to you by Audible ... or El Gato Camlink ... or whatever. Didn't want to disappoint! :)
Aside from your comment, it’s a great lesson
Any chance of a lesson on the missing solos, especially the last solo?
Hi Joe. I'll put it on the to-do list.
Thank you!
I am having trouble catching the rhythm, if 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & is DUDUDUDU am I hearing 1 2 (miss on 3 down beat) & 4 & played like D D U DU ?
Michael Katt It's a pickup on the & of the 4 of the previous measure, as in ... & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & ... you play on & 1 2 3 & (rest on 4) & and so forth.
Ever tried it with the major third. After the triad.
Hi David. Sorry I missed this earlier. Do you mean the main riff?
Mark Zabel I guess that you were doing it. I just couldn’t see In the lick after the triad it hits the major 3rd in the rift But you must have been doing it. I just saw it differently. My bad
@@davidmusselwhite547 No sweat. Sorry you couldn't see the fingers. I've tried setting up the "over the shoulder" shot and can't get it right.
Great lesson but did I hear you say Ike and Tina Turner? That’s Fred Turner.
LOL! Yes, Fred Turner. I said "Ike and Tina Turner" along with *"Harold Q. Overdrive"!* He wasn't really in BTO either. Thanks for watching!
Oh, I just remembered, I see the letter R it is a Reverend Buckshot, correct?
You got it!
Get your slop on describes my daily playing😩
I hear you. I get that way when I can't play often. Lots of great players made a career and maybe even a virtue of it though (Richards, Jimmy Page, and others), and some of the best bands had "beautiful sloppiness" (The Band for example). Enjoying music is all that's required. Hang in there and enjoy!
What instrument are you playing?
It's a Reverend Buckshot. Great guitar. Very solid and versatile. Sort of a cross between a Les Paul and a Telecaster.
I have really small hands so I cant play 8 on the 6th and 12 on the 5th but good video none the less 😂
Thanks. I totally understand!
Confused...how is 11-12-11 a c7 triad?
Sorry if I said that. If you mean at around 6:25, I said (on strings 3, 2, and 1 respectively) 12-11-12. It's a C7 chord without the root note. (C7 = C-E-G-Bb ... the chord I played is G-Bb-E) Sorry that I said "triad". It's a 7th chord. But because it has 3 notes and skips the root I often think of it as a triad.
Mark Zabel , thanks. I guess I need to re-read my music theory books. I had thought that it still needs the note, “C”, in this case in the chord, such as an inversion. Thanks for all your lessons and song breakdowns!
@@ccmkoho I think the main thing is that it's 12-11-12, not 11-12-11, which would be a straight B major triad. 12-11-12 is what's played in the song ... functions as a C7.
My advice would be to NOT spend time re-reading theory. It will give a definition of a dominant 7th as Root, 3rd, 5th, and flatted 7th. That's 4 notes. But good players often leave out notes, particularly roots, because they're played by other instruments. Usually the 3rd and the 7th are enough to support the melody in a blues based song. Danny Gatton called this the two note wonder. (Try this out for yourself in an A blues using strings 4 and 3 in the standard 5th position. You'll be amazed at what happens if you don't already know this. A7, D7, and E7 ... but only use the 3rd and 7th of each chord and don't move positions.)
I already apologized for the cavalier use of "C7 triad". What I mean by it is "three note chord that functions as a C dominant". But that's rather long language, so I tend to be a bit cavalier with it.
Give a listen to really good rhythm players from Brad Paisley to Hendrix to Johnny Marr to Keith Richards. You'll find they're often playing only portions of chords when they're not playing specific riffs.
Mark Zabel , ah yes, thank you. Your explanation makes much more sense to me now! I see how in the context of the song key how the c7 is implied.
Thanks for your great guitar playing, with your help I have learned the song chords, riffs, leads up to the final solos... your improvisation is really good and your tab was a terrific help.
Any chance you can video the 15 second solo which starts after the chord pattern CC,FFF, Eb Eb Bb Bb Bb? The solo it starts 1:35 min in the song to 1:50 min. ruclips.net/video/8guR-IPJmII/видео.html And those 15 seconds are so tough to learn. Can you help?
I just listened. I don't hear a solo at 1:35 in the BTO song (link: ruclips.net/video/NCIUf8eYPqA/видео.html). Do you mean 2:52 to around 3:06 in the song that I linked?
Yes that is the solo , this was the version I was referring to ruclips.net/video/8guR-IPJmII/видео.html
I thought the opening was played on bass
No, it's guitar. Definitely a bassy sound on the guitar, but it's guitar.
I'll watch this later I hope you managed to play it just a little off-key the way Randy did.
Have fun with it!
Lol he looks like Jay Pritchett from Modern Family
Ha! Well, I have more hair ... and besides, Jay did pretty well for himself! :)
stupid closed caption in way to see
Just turn them off. (Gear icon, Captions = turn off captions) or on your phone click on the 3 dots (...) in the upper right corner and follow the directions.
Ike and Tina Turner? C'mon Man, It was bassist Fred Turner, You don't have a clue what the hell your talking about, but good lesson
OMG! That was a joke! Did you also think I was serious about Harold Q. Overdrive???? Hope you're kidding about that.
