Scientists have used a high-speed camera to film hummingbirds' aerial acrobatics at 1000 frames per second. They can see, frame by frame, how neither wind nor rain stop these tiniest of birds from fueling up.
DEEP LOOK: a new ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe and meet extraordinary new friends. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
How do hummingbirds eat?
With spring in full bloom, hummingbirds can be spotted flitting from flower to flower and lapping up the sugary nectar inside. These tiniest of birds have the highest metabolism of any warm-blooded animal, requiring them to consume their own body weight in nectar each day to survive.
By comparison, if a 150-pound human had the metabolism of a hummingbird, he or she would need to consume the caloric equivalent of more than 300 hamburgers a day.
But it's not just an extreme appetite that sets hummingbirds apart from other birds. These avian acrobats are the only birds that can fly sideways, backwards and hover for long stretches of time. In fact, hovering is essential to hummingbirds' survival since they have to keep their long, thin beaks as steady as a surgeon's scalpel while probing flowers for nectar.
How do Hummingbirds fly?
Hummingbirds don't just hover to feed when the weather is nice. They have to keep hovering and feeding even if it's windy or raining, a remarkable feat considering most of these birds weigh less than a nickel.

Hummingbirds are excellent insect hunters, not just nectar drinkers. It's weird to not mention such a huge part of their lives. They're like little jet fighters snatching gnats and little flying bugs out of the sky. I see them doing this when i walk as the sun goes down
I've seen them steal from spider webs as well, it is all their food.
That's gotta be cool to see everyday.
@@kevinconrad6156 They often steal that for nest.
No aircraft or animal has the kind of control a hummingbird has they can fly in any direction at any speed and stop or continue based on the thought that moves through their birdlike mind in the time anyone else could blink. Amazing animals. Absolutely astonishing. Engineering at nature's finest.

Not very fast, they get pretty fat

Can you make a video of What Happens When You Put a Scientist in a Wind Tunnel?
And still you kind of have to thank them since most of what you do and have wouldn't be there (at least not in the same way) if it wasn't for them.
I wouldn't call this research an experiment. More like a study on how a very unique species function. Plus even if this would be defined as an experiment it is in no way harmful towards the animal in my opinion.

NO! Bad birb!
Hummingbirds really are amazing creatures. I remember one was trapped in our garage because we forgot to close the door. I was able to set up a net and catch the little gal, because she simply couldn't figure out how to get out. She was pretty weak by the time he allowed us to catch her (yes, it a she. We have ruby throated hummingbirds around here) but within ten minutes she had rejuvenated after being trickled a few drops of sugar water. She drank her fill and then perched in our rosebush and squeaked at us! It was really very amazing. Definitely came to appreciate those guys a little more that day. :)
Lydia Morris Thanks for sharing your story! We don't get the ruby throated hummers out here. Would love to see one someday.
thats cool man , she thanked you for saving her :)
Thank YOU for the video, it was awesome! And yeah, the little rubies are plain in comparison to other hummers, I suppose, but the little males seem so pretty zipping around the gardens. The little gals are so curious.

It's amazing that evolution transformed lumbering beasts (dinosaurs) into a sophisticated and highly specialized flying machine.
0:12 GET OUTTA THE WAY BRO!
What do the hummingbirds do when there aren't many flowers? We have a surprising amount of hummingbirds where I live, and they're native species. Yet when I go outside I rarely see that many wild flowers. Usually only in the spring and part of summer. Yet I still see lots of hummingbirds while there are relatively few flowers, even in gardens.
They also eat spiders and insects!
another reason to love these amazing birds
Hummingbirds can remember where flowers theyve eaten from in the past are so theyre coming to where you live and know where to zero in on the food. This also applies to feeders people put up, our birds near my house sometimes hover in front of our porch when the feeder isnt there like, hey! get to work!
