    Popular hashtags used in social media for those of us who still enjoy shooting film, or for those young ones who have discovered the joy of shooting analogue. Is film dead and new film cameras a thing of the past? Not according to Leica. They currently have 3 film cameras in their lineup, including two that need no battery to work (the MP needs a battery only to allow the light meter to work). The Leica M-A Typ 127 is a fully mechanical camera, batteries not needed. All you need to do is put film in it, adjust the aperture and shutter speed, focus, and press the shutter button. That's it. Yes you'll need some way to meter the light, but if you're experience enough (or use the sunny 16 rule) you're good to go.
    I had a great time shooting with the Leica M-A in Hong Kong, and I enjoyed shooting with a variety of films. Fujifilm Neopan ACROS, Fujicolor Pro400H, Cinestill 800T. Beautiful films with unique characteristics that can not easily be simulated by a digital camera or processing. Please enjoy my review of this camera, but also the lens and the film that actually create the images. Thanks for watching, please remember to like and subscribe. Happy shooting

    I transitioned fully to film this year (except for professional jobs). I totally understand. Shooting film has become a strangely emotional experience for me, and I've become a much, much better photographer since beginning to experiment with film a few years ago.
    I shoot with a second hand M7 but I'm training myself to shoot manual only on streets. I would love to end up with a new black paint MP one day.

    Great video. I recently acquired an MP and am really enjoying it. You are definitely correct about Leica's commitment to still producing fine film cameras, in my book it is the ultimate 35mm. I'm gonna have to try that cine film one of these days. Although I think it would probably work best with the hasselblad xpan.

    Love this video!!! I'm playing with my friends Voigtlander Nokton 50mm F1.1 on my Leica M3 and Sony a7R to compare and see the two different styles (I love both of them). I'm all about the process along the journey we all love and hate about one or the other. My heart will always lean towards FILM for both profession work and personal work. I need to buy me some of that CineStill 800 T! Thanks again for another insightful "review" and look forward to seeing more of your work! :)

      +Lang Kim Photography thanks! The Cinestill film looks great with Leica glass or any cine lenses. I forgot to mention that in the review. The 35mm Summilux makes a difference in conjunction with the film.

    I got an M2 a few months ago and paired it with a Voigtlander nocton classic 35mm. Coming to it from using a Zorki 4K for around 4 years it's like chalk and cheese. Leica is quite a formidable brand.

    Hey man, nice video again, lovely place and lovely camera. I am lucky that my old trusty M3 (Doublestroke, with the glas plate, klicking back and Number starting with 7 ...you know?) is in perfect condition again after its visit to crr luton (GB) and also my M6 seems to be in its best age ... so no need for something from the present. But if I would need, maybe my work and living would depend on it, I would for sure get an MP. Big thanks also to Joseph for introducing you to cinestill. There is not so much brand new out in the world of film photography these days but cinestill really is...and it looks awesome. The style, the look of cinestill 800T absolutely compliments the look of your images and the locations you have chosen...perfect match

      +S. Schüngel thanks. There's also Double X film, which is cine black and white. I have a roll of it and I'm looking forward to finishing it soon. The M6 and M3 DS are great cameras.

    • @Analogfotografie
      @Analogfotografie 7 лет назад

      I've tested the Double X maybe a year ago and was quite pleased with it, but it is usually harder to get ... sold out most of the time ... I have also tested their 50D Daylight balanced film but never got great results out of it. Maybe because I was using it in overcast conditions and not in bright light. I was told the 50D really begins to shine under sunny conditions.

      Most modern films have the same colour depth as the latest digital file, it's just a matter of how you pull out the details from the negative. These were low resolution scans, so you can only imagine if I did a high resolution scan.

    Very nice video Taco, waiting for this.
    I am a old analog photographer with Olympus om-4 who I bought 1983 with 35/2.0 21/3.5 and Tamron 90/2.5 who I still use. Today I use Portra 400 who I really love, develop my self and scan with Plustek 8200/Vuescan. Unfortunately my scanner brake down and my camera is not reliable any more. Therefore I am in the solution to buy a new system. It is very tempting to continue to use film because i am very comfort with develop film my self. It´s not harder then do your hand washing, and I like the workflow with develop/scan/produce picture.
    I use my 35mm for 95% and 90mm sometimes in my photography and think a combo M-A, 35 summicron, 75 summarit would be perfect for me, the 90mm was little to tele for me. Thinking with a new Reflecta rps 10m for batch scan, and that will be 9367 EUR. That I can handle for the next 30-40 year, but the film gets more and more expensive (8,20 € Porta 400 macodirect.de) could be a deal breaker for me. 20-30 rolls/year and probably getting more expensive, and who long will the film last?
    There is some digital system who is very tempting for me. Leica,s digital cameras is to expensive because I think digital cameras life span are 5-8 years, and closets a Leica philosophy would be a Sony A7 with Loxia lenses for FF. Thinking Fuji X-E2 native lenses or Voigtlander/Zeiss M-lenses, maybe Panna GX80/85 with PLeica 15mm 1,7/42,5mm 1,2(1,7) combo. And latest the Sigma SD Quattro/30 1,4 for 1000€ who most say its so slow, compare for me today must be very fast :) and maybe most filmlike today.
    It´s a hard life
    Kenneth

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Mattias, the M6 is beautiful... well, all Leica's are beautiful, even the the M5!! Yes you can definitely get cheap film cameras, but also cheaper M mount cameras like the Bessa and Minolta CLE

    • @gearreallydoesntmatter
      @gearreallydoesntmatter 7 лет назад

      If you haven't I suggest trying the Bessa-L with the 15mm f4.5 if ever given the chance.
      It is a lot of fun when pretty much everything is in frame and also in focus with a zone from 1.5m to infinity.
      Takes shooting from the hip to the next level.
      BTW, I just published a review of the Fuji X70. Bought it after seeing your videos about it.
      Im happy I did.
      Keep up the good work!

    Awesome Video! What are your experiences shooting Cinestill 800 at night? What was your exposure for the shots in this video?
    Im just picked up my first Leica (M3)! and ran a few rolls of cinestill 800 thru it without a light meter. I had to guess but it was pretty confusing at night in metropolitan areas. I would love to learn from your experience. Hope you can help!

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 лет назад +2

      You should probably use a smartphone light meter app, but I was getting anywhere from 1/30-1/60th of a second at around f/2.8, but it really depended on how much light there was. The most was 1/125th at f/4, but only when there was strong light coming from businesses.

    Let me say that for me this is your best review that I've seen so far, and you pics they are amazing, did the shop scanned them for you or did you do it yourself? I have an m8.2 and a x100t and just bought a leica m4 ( my very first leica that I bought on 2002 and then sold for an m6 which I sold for a canon 10d (yes I.m ashamed...) cheers!

      +sergio godoy thanks for watching. DotWell in Tsim Sha Tsui dev+scan for $35HKD. The scan was 2400 lines of vertical resolution (shorter side) with the option of paying more for a higher scan. M6 for 10D. You live and learn.

  • @RolleiPollei

    Those halos around the lights in the cinestill is a product of them removing the remjet layer. I shoot hand rolled vision3 500t which is the same stock as the cinestill but with the remjet and it doesn't have those halos. I'll admit I love the halos and prefer the cinestill to the original kodak stock. You should also try out the 50d from cinestill it's my go to slow speed color film

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 лет назад +1

      cool, thanks for the info. I didn't realize the removed remjet layer affects the halos, which is really cool

    • @Analogfotografie
      @Analogfotografie 7 лет назад

      The Remjet is not only for friction issues. It also acts as an anti halation layer as those used in other film types. Removing the remjet so also removes the anti halation protection. So light is reflected by your pressure plate and goes back into the film. Would be curious if polishing your pressure plate or adding some kind of mirror coating could emphasis the effect...does anybody know?

    Do people usually push the Cinestill to 1600 or leave it at 800? thank you.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 лет назад

      I'm sure some do push the film, but then when you take it to the lab you have to tell them you've pushed, which means extra cost. I guess for me coming from film, 800 feels plenty fast, so I have no problem shooting fast glass, slow shutter speeds, and just being careful when shooting. But I'm sure this film can be pushed. The grain looks fine at 800 so 1 stop won't be a problem.

    • @bigheadtaco

      yes it's always good to get a proof first so you have an idea what the image will look like. Sometimes what you see on screen as a JPEG or TIFF isn't what it will look like printed.

    Great information Bht, The M-A has been my dream camera since its announcement two years ago. The prices for the (type 127) have come down from its announcement 4750US to 4195US still an expensive tool. I've saved my money for this one purpose to get a Leica MA. I love the abbreviation (type 127). Leica sure do know how to do a number on you! lol. A friend of mine asked me if I had seen the newish Sony a7r II, so I did a bit of research. Well,l it's nothing short of a super camera. I can use an adapter for my 35mm summicron M lens.. The more I try and rationalize it the Sony would make much more sense but, the overwhelmingly key. factor is pre-visualization

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 лет назад

      +RichardvBrown many Hong Kong photographers have a philosophy about buying a film Leica. You buy it once and it's for life. It never goes out of style or falls behind in technology. Any digital camera becomes obsolete once it's replaced with a newer model.

    • @rvbsoundfactory
      @rvbsoundfactory 7 лет назад

      bigheadtaco Indeed well said, I did notice you brought up the quality control issues with the MA the forums are talking about it too, Yes maybe it is just operator error or internet static noise. but it sure does put the pause button on. Appreciate your video and that Cine film looks good.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 лет назад

      RichardvBrown It's funny because it seems like only the MA gets it, not the MP, although they are probably 95% the same. But I've taken the M-A out on loan twice, and total run about 20 rolls through it total, and I never had slippage.

    • @vangstr

      I sold my A7Rii for the Leica MP. Great sensor on the Sony but the camera as a whole made me a lazy photographer. My Leica MP and Hasselblad 503CW - constantly challenges my creativity with certain limitations and I really have to think before pressing that shutter button.

    • @rvbsoundfactory
      @rvbsoundfactory 7 лет назад

      Teng Vang The Sony is to much camera for my needs. one salesman told me "it is the kitchen sink of cameras" he also said it as a great sensor. I just think the Sony would get in the way of pictures taken. it didn't take me long to come to this conclusion. One camera one lens. Leica.

    Those are some fine images. Just as good or better than the one you showed during the GR3 review previously. However in all deference the actual review starts much later in the video. And the initial video seems to be a rambling monologue. Which touches on film vs digital , your experiences etc. why choose the leica MA over the MP ? Why buy this rather than a M6 ? There’s so much not addressed in the video. Many of the older leica film bodies can also be refurbished.

    Ted Vieira pushes Acros to 1,600 I think. It doesn't look bad. Personally, I'd love to shoot more film, but my issue is the availability of good reliable labs.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 лет назад

      Yes thanks, I misspoke when I said you can't push or pull. What I meant is that I place a forced limit on myself by shooting the set ISO, versus a digital camera where you can change ISO without even thinking, too easy. Especially black and white is easily pushable, since there's no worry of colour shifting. Thanks for commenting. Ted is great.

    I love to shoot film, and I like to drink my wine from a paper bag, under a bridge. The cost of shooting film in Canada is outrageous, even with home processing (colour and B&W), but it is worth it to me, and therefore, no wine glass. Priorities right?

      Ha ha, for sure. I know guys who buy and flip cars every 4-5 years and take a 30-40K hit every time. I drive my 2001 Nissan Sentra, same car for 15 years. Priorities.

    with this logic why do you need a rangefinder? it's too easy to compose the shot with rangefinder

    Nice video indeed. Anyway, it's good to know that Leica is still commited to support film photographers.
    But honestly, a > $4200 film camera (body alone), without metering, autofocus, etc? Isn't that is just too much?
    If I had the budget, I would definitely get a M6 and a 35 Cron to complement my M3 and 50 Summitar :D

      you have good taste in cameras and lenses. As for the M-A price, you have to remember that Leica probably makes less than 5,000 of these total. On such a small production run of a hand made camera that's made in Germany, I don't see it being much cheaper. Now, if they moved production to China and made 100,000 units, maybe the price will drop to $2000, but I don't think the majority of Leica photographers would support such a business decision. Like McLaren or Rolls Royce, low production run means high cost that is passed onto the customer. The only way to 'compete' is to sell it as luxury product and focus on exclusivity, quality and uniqueness. I think Leica has done that quite well. Comparing Leica to Canon or Fujifilm would be unfair. Canon has more managers than Leica has total worldwide employees. Sony probably has more marketing people than Leica's entire employees. Leica is a very, very tiny company. They can not compete with the big Japanese brands. The fact they still exist is extraordinary, considering most of the European peers either went bankrupt 30 years ago, or swallowed up by other Japanese manufacturers. The days that Leica was on-par in terms of production with Nikon and Canon are long gone. They are a niche brand that needs to aim at luxury to survive.

      Yeah, to sum those up: "niche market". Nice explaination, anyway.

      +northstar1950 with a screw mount to M mount adapter, you can use those lenses on many cameras that have the M mount. Minolta, Voigtlander Bessa ( made by Cosina), Konica and others made M mount cameras, and they are economically priced compared to Leica's.

      A good point BHT. What I have been doing is mounting the Leitz lenses on my Panasonic GX7 and the results have been pretty good. There did seem to be some flair which was easily dealt with using, in my case 'Picasa' I managed some really nice images using a 1935 Leitz Elmar, so a fusion of old lenses on new technology...........perhaps you could try something like this ans see what you think, Thanks again for an interesting new upload and also for taking the time To respond to my various meanderings.

      northstar1950 generation 1 Sony A7 is great to mount old glass since you get the intended field of view with no crop factor. The prices are not ridiculous (less than $1000 USD used). Something I've been thinking about for a while.... or get a used Leica M9 :-)

      The Voitlander Bessa made by Cosina has now been discontinued, which is sad. It used the Leica M mount so it was a good alternative to buying a Leica.

    • @deeplydeluxe
      @deeplydeluxe 7 лет назад

      Thanks, Take, I hadn't realised it was discontinued. I considered getting one a few years ago - I think it had a useful viewfinder like 21/25 or something (I have a ZM25). I got an M6 TTL instead.
      Getting an M6 gave me an understanding of viewfinders, and led me decisively from a NEX-5N to the X-Pro1 for most of my shooting.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 лет назад +1

      deeplydeluxe the Voigtlander lenses made by Cosina are still being made, and so are the Zeiss for the M-mount, so it's still a great option instead of getting a Leica lens. Although the Bessa bodies are discontinued, many retailers still have new in box stock, and there's lots of used ones on the market. The viewfinder experience isn't as nice as the Leica, nor is the feel of the dials, but for 1/10th the price, it's a great bargain.

    Why would someone buy this instead of an m3?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 лет назад +5

      many reasons to buy the M-A, many reasons to buy the M3. Buying the M-A means you're buying a brand new camera, not something that's 60 years old. That is important to some people. You get a warranty, service, and just the value of buying something new. This might not mean anything to some, but it does to others. Parts are readily available, and every Leica service dept can easily find parts. You can mount lenses as wide as 28mm without the need to modify the viewfinder, or use an external OVF. The M3 can only see as wide as 50mm. I prefer the newer way of loading film, with the built in sprockets to load, vs the M3. It takes a bit longer with the M3. If you want a black M-A, no problem (black chrome, not black paint). If you want a real black paint M3, get ready to take out a mortgage. If you decide to factory black paint your M-A, Leica will do it for a price though. But I prefer the all black chrome M-A, black on black script, very stealth. These are just some reasons, but not all.

      Brilliant 'all-guns blazing' answer, no prisoners or stone unturned, even Sony fan-boys would swap allegiance and queue up for the M-A after that.

      Idk but I bought 2 great condition m3 bodies, a summarit 50 1.5, and a elmarit-m 135 2.8 for $1,700 less than an MA. Also just bought a scanner, film developing stuff, camera light meter, and a bag of all kinds of film with leaving me $200 under an MA. I think I'm going to get a nice new camera strap with the change and it's also a very nice feeling using the M3 like owning a piece of history :)

    I don't understand why this camera is so expensive. I understand why lenses are expensive, that has always made sense to me, but why does the camera body without lenses cost so fucking much? There is no sensor, no light meter, no lenses included, you can't adjust the ISO on film cameras, that's up to the film you load itself, it's mechanical so there are no electronic components, there is no glass or prism as it is not an SLR, and the only thing that you can really adjust is the shutter speed, which you can change on almost any camera. The price cannot just be due to the fact that you can mount Leica lenses to it. As I write this comment, this thing is listed as $4,695.00, the only way it is worth that much is if it comes with a couple of lenses.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  5 лет назад +2

      If you're comparing prices of a hand-built camera made in Germany, versus a mass produced camera by a Japanese manufacturer overseas in developing countries, the economics of pricing is very different. Leica may make a few hundred of these per year, versus hundreds of thousands of cameras by Canon or Sony. That alone makes the scale of production very different. It's like comparing a Rolex to a Seiko. Both great brands, but both have different target consumers and work at different scales of production. You can't really compare the two. Same as comparing Rolls Royce with Toyota.

    • @markalexander774
      @markalexander774 5 лет назад

      @@bigheadtaco So there is no quality reason, it's just because the brand name. Got it. There is plenty of shit that is made in Germany and other first world countries that isn't marked up to extreme levels.
      Rolex is another one that is really just about the branding not as much about the quality. Compare Seiko (standard Seikos, not Grand Seikos), Rolex, and Patek Phillippe. Seiko (which is also overpriced for the quality that they are offering, but it isn't ridiculous) and Rolex are not terribly different in quality, both are reliable and well made, with the Quality Control of Rolex being more consistent. Rolex is priced way higher than Seiko's standard line (and of course I'm not referring to the Rolex models that are made of precious metals, only their stainless steel models as precious metals themselves will obviously raise the price) and they are made in similar ways, neither is hand made by artisans who polish every single part of the movement (you don't see a lot of Rolexes with see through case backs do you). The difference in pay for a Rolex employee in Switzerland who is doing the exact same thing as a Seiko employee in Malaysia, is not anywhere near the difference in cost of the two products. The reason Rolex can sell their shit at such high prices is that people like the brand name. Compare both of these to Patek Philippe, which is hand made by artisans who etch out and polish every single piece of the movement and put the whole thing together by hand in what can take quite a long time. Patek Philippe is still way overpriced, but there is more of a justification.
      Cameras are much less complex than mechanical watches. There are nowhere near as many small moving parts (especially with this as it is a rangefinder and not an SLR). And all of those parts are molded and made by machines, all the person is doing is assembling the pieces, which cannot possibly be that difficult and cannot possibly take that long. If we are being generous, the total cost of production for this camera is probably around a hundred bucks, if that. There are no expensive materials in it, no super high quality lenses, no electronic components, no prism, no anything that would make the components expensive, and the people manufacturing them are probably making like $15-$20/hr. So if you add that in and you cover overhead (the lights have to be kept on, the water running, and the rent paid of the factory itself), it's probably around $100-$200. The other $4,495.00 is profit. It's kind of like Rolex, if you made them cost around what they should, idiots wouldn't want to buy them.

    • @markalexander774
      @markalexander774 5 лет назад

      @@JimBarcelona As I said before, I am not talking about the lenses, there is a legitimate, tangible difference between them. On the body alone, other than the fact that is has the word "Leica" on it, what makes this worth the money when it doesn't do anything special? Just the fact that it wasn't made in a third world country does not justify that markup. Even if each one were handmade by one guy in some small town in Germany, that would not justify that price. So if the only reason it costs that much is due to the brand, then that is not really respectable.
