Watching the video, reminded me of my college days, everything was almost unchanged… the great flinders st station…thanks for the unintentional nostalgic video… doing a street photo was great and inspiring
Thoroughly enjoyed that. I much prefer that kind of street video with the narration style dialogue, and I imagine it would have allowed you to focus on shooting too which I thought showed in the quality of images that you made on the days shown. You're getting very sharp with the street captures, I really liked the aesthetic of the rain and flash too. Should definitely add more of these videos in the future. It's engaging to have the more evaluative talk, as though you're in the photographer's mind as the shooting takes place. Well done, man. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks Ben! Yeah even though I wouldn't have minded doing some narration while shooting, it would have added another distraction beyond trying to remember to record with the gopro 😂 I wouldn't mind streamlining the process more and finding a better way though, while improving the footage.
Really loved this video. I need to get out in the rain and shoot again. It has been a while. That shot of the guy about to jump over the puddle was awesome.
I misread the title ! I thought you were going to show some new development process, where you can use a change bag on the street to move the film from the body to a processing tank on the footpath .... and then use straight out Melbourne rainwater as a developing agent. It's truly amazing what a diverse range of chemistry actually works on film development, so if Grade-A Melbourne rainwater also worked, I wouldn't be overly surprised. Film is the medium that keeps on providing surprises !
Lovely photos! Amazing how calmly you handled the changing conditions. I am nervous shooting people anyway and with the rain and flash would have been all over the place
Yay! This is so good. This type of content is so rare. The work is actually wonderful, and the video with it is perfect. Plus the technical details thrown in, too. A+ mate
Thank you for sharing ! Love seeing what Melbourne looks like. My favorite photo in this video you create is the Spiderman dancing arm and arm with the old lady - Spiderman looking right at the camera. It's so timeless and it does a lot for me. So cool how there's a motion aspect to it.
oh man, haven't shot street in months (and probably wont for a while due to covid) but this has me looking forward to going back out! more of these please!
You actually got outside!! This was a fun video to watch. Awesome and you got some really nice street shots!! If you take the trouble to go play in the rain with your camera, you can get some pretty nice shots.... no pain, no gain.
Stumbled on this by chance, and I must say that I really enjoyed both the video, and, more importantly for me, the pics. A reminder of a world where it was important to get everything right and shoot at the perfect moment, rather than spray and pray in the knowledge that eye AF and ultra fast fps will work for you. At the end, your vision, skills, hp5 cum M-A make all this so much more valuable. Thanks!
The flash photos are where the magics at... also the dance party merging haha. Any tips on daylight manual flash use? Recently picked up a little Oly 35RC and a flash, keen to get creative with it 〰️
Thanks! Main advice is just do it,! Negative film is quite tolerant, and in daylight there's lower risk the flash will overexpose etc. I set the flash I'm using manually to the ISO and aperture value I'll use, and let it do the rest.
This was so enjoyable to watch Hashem! I definitely miss getting out on the streets of Melbourne. Thanks for sharing this, I’m living vicariously through you! 👍
those first few of the kids in BW are amazing. love the flash work to. Not to sure about the directional flash in this case but the on camera flash definitely brings out the subjects more. Nice one
dude!!! those shots of the kids playing on the monuments (if that's what you'd call them)--those are first rate. great work. i also like the flash shots--you're braver than i am, maybe i'll get there some day (-:
Nice video! Regarding the light leaks on HP5+, I've has some on the first few frames as well. My tip is NOT to retract the leader fully when rewinding as that helps the light seals to stay tighter ever so slightly.
I enjoyed this so much I actually shed some tears. I lived in a big city (Mexico City) but I had to move back to where I'm from when the pandemic started, and watching this really made me miss walking and shooting there
Hey, sorry to hear and I hope you get to get back to it someday! I would recommend also watching the_real_sir_robin videos here on RUclips; he's made a lot of videos shooting in major Mexican cities pretty recently :-)
Wonderful video and some really great shots in there, Hashem! I've never experimented with flash on any of the Leicas I've had, but it looks like it was quite a bit of fun!
@@pushingfilm thanks dude. Felt super rusty with it all. Hoping 2022 proves to be a good year for videos for me. Trying to be responsible with it all, so we shall see.
Great video man - really enjoyable! When it comes to using sunny 16 with indoor or partially indoor scenes I really struggle to decide what to use without using a meter as backup. What equivalent aperture did you use for the scene with the lady stood by the train station exit?
The photos are so good! I really like the ones of the kids. The construction is so wavy and you made some really good compositions with it! By the way, is the rewind lever worth it? I have a mp but always fear that it will ruin the paint.
Thank you! They are a bit pricey, so only worth it if the twisty rewind bothers you enough or you'd find the faster reload time worth it (which I do on the street especially)
I enjoyed your tour through Melbourne trying and then succeeding to find the rain. What worried me is the light leaks in your M-A. I’ve been considering buying a new film Leica M and now I’m not so sure. Thanks for showing it warts and all.
Thanks! That was light piping and was only on the first one or two shots, it can happen with any roll/camera during certain conditions: loading in bright sunlight, using a "film picker" when self-developing, or not purging more than one shot... All of which I did on these black & white rolls. In saying that, regular light leaks can happen on any cameras, and Leicas are no exception.
Very enjoyable vid Hashem :) Liked your voiceover and you taking us through both the shooting and settings but also the stories and color commentary on the neighborhoods and local facts :) Also good on you for trying something new like the flash etc. I have shot some in bad weather both with my Leica Q and some other digital cameras in past but not that much with film yet, but have also gone into Stockholm to try and catch some nasty weather at times but mostly it has been with snow etc. I liked quite a lot of your images from this walk but i lean mostly towards the spiderman in costume shots and also a few i the rain was pretty cool. I actually never used a flash for street, and not sure i will but was interesting to see how people reacted ( or not ) and what it looked with the rain. Nice to see you are able to walk around more now as well, must be even more special being able to and taking photos at the same time! Like eating cake on a rollercoaster, double joy ;) Anyhow, great vid, look forward to more of these . I see you also get the Harekrischna train, we get that in "Old city" and other areas around Stockholm as well, and like you have sometimes followed them to see them interact with other interesting people hehe. Sometimes it bares fruit :D /Martin the swede
@@pushingfilm No worries, thank you for putting out some enjoyable to watch during this crazy phase in your life :) Its pretty nice the first month or so with the snow, and you get quite inspired by it, after that you kind of hope its gone faster and long for the light of spring haha. But those sunny wintery days on the ice walking across the lake or just the really tough snowstorms are both magical to shoot or experience :)
Thanks for great video, may I ask how do you set the shutter speed in camera? Is that 1/50 flash sync speed? Also may I ask what is your setting for the flash?
Hi, thanks for watching! Yes, I always set to 1/50 (or slower). The setting on the flash would depend on the aperture I'm using at the time and iso of the film. It has a little guide on the back to set the power accordingly.
Subscribed! Your photos are so good! Thanks for putting this up! But I just have 2 questions since I’m planing on getting a Leica m4-p myself, but I looked on RUclips, nobody talked about how to set the film iso on the camera body at all, would you kindly tell me how to do that? And 2nd question is, what type of flashlights you were using? Your photos turn out to be so good! I appreciate it!
Hey, thanks so much for watching! With the M4-P and M4 series of cameras you don't set the ISO because they don't have a light meter (sorry if I'm misunderstanding the question) This is the same case as the M-A I'm using in this video- the ISO dial on the back is just used as a reminder of what film is loaded. The flash I'm using is a Nikon SB-30
@@pushingfilm Leica M-A is high up on my list to get next. I already own M6, so I thought why not try harder to shoot to really push myself with film photography.
Thank you for this very inspiring video - would you be so kind and give me some information on your flash settings for shooting in the rain? Thanks in advance :)
