The important thing here is the transponder chip. Unlike other car keys, it is glued to the key cover which is a really bad idea. Once these get a bit old and worn out, often the screw hole breaks and the cover comes loose. Once that happens the chip glue gives up and the chip falls out and get lost. So make sure you keep an eye on the chip!
Okay, today we're looking at a Mitsubishi key. It's a two button key, lock and unlock, and these are found on lots of the modern vehicles. To change the battery, there's a screw here, undo that screw and then just pull the back off. Inside here is the remote control pod. Then we push on there, and this will all come out together. This goes back into the key, we'll do that in a minute, and here is the pod with the two buttons on. If you look at these three buttons, just here is a place where you can put a screwdriver, undo that there, and there is your battery. Just pop the battery out using the screwdriver. It is a Cr1616, so to pop it back together, put your battery in and make sure it works. Then this here, you pop these back here, just be careful of this bit here doesn't break, because a lot of these break and then they don't stay in.
This here goes into here, and then you have the cover to put back on. This here is the electronic chip that starts the car, and it's just held on here by glue, it's very bad design really, so just watch out that that's still there. Then pop that there, close it up, and with my fat fingers do the screw up. That's it. Nice and easy. Хобби
Awesome. You save lot's of my money. My outlander didn't start and i was ready to call tow car. Just checked your video and realise my chip is lost because keys screwbase is broken. I found chip at the floor and now car works perfectly. Thank you.
Great stuff, really glad you found the chip ;)
Dead battery after 6 years...Now thanks to you i can replace it myself ! mitsubishi owes you big time!!!!
Love it ;)
Excellent. Thanks for that. Was exactly what I needed.
Thanks Brett, really appreciate the feedback :)
Thank you!! My thin bit inside was already broke when I opened but all good still! Now I can unlock my truck in the morning without having to heat key up first haha cheers

Hi
Needed to sort out my Mitsubishi key and your video helped a lot. Thanks
That's great Jim. These keys are one of the worst we see for breaking and the chip getting lost. Glad it helped :)
Cheers for the video mate. Just made it very easy for me 😊

Super helpful, just what I was after
Thanks Nick, glad it helped you :)
A life saver…two Mitsubishi garages told us to check the battery…useless as it was a brand new battery. Yes the chip had fallen out …luckily we had kept it….thought it was a bit of inner casing…worked perfectly then!
Hi John, lots of people make this mistake, it's just poor design. Glad it helped you :)
I lost one of my car key chip not realising it dropped somewhere. My key drop but didn't see the chip nearby then I tried using it to start my car only to realise it won't start! 😭
Thank you so much, very useful
You're welcome, glad it helped you :)
Thank you for this, just saved us an expensive replacement key when we realised the case had split and the key would no longer start the car, we hunted around for the small chip and found it 👍🏻
Nice one, it's really common that the chip falls out and gets lost, well done for finding it!
@@TheCarKeyMan sir if the chip fell what should I do? Do I
Need to put it inside again? Using glue?
that happened to one of my key and it's so expensive to replace the chip
@@DavidDavid-uc9zk just glue it back in with “super glue” or “Cyanoacrylate”.
Yeah same just happened to me, unfortunately I cant find the chip 😢
Thanks for the video mate.
You're welcome Ashley :)
Thanks mate... very useful.

You’re very welcome, glad it helped :)
Muy buen video
Thank you. A very helpful video. We had a key cut and it didn't work because the idiot did not transfer over the immobiliser chip. Luckily we had the old key.
Good job you kept the old one! Lots of people throw away the old key before checking teh new one, and these aren't cheap either!
Thank you so much ❤❤❤
Brilliant, thanks.
You're welcome, thanks for watching :)
Thank you, I didn't realized there was a chip, that was no longer glued to my key and throwed that micro piece of plastic into the bin. Had to look for it again tho, after I couldnt startup my car haha
Well done on finding it inside the bin! Hope it wasn't too grim. Glad it helped you :)

Great stuff Rudresh :)
Thanks for the video. I decided to replace the battery in my spare as per your guide. I get all the correct lights so new batter is fine but it wont unlock the car remotely. Exactly the same model of ley as in your video. I replaced with a 1616. Any ideas? Or is it back to the main stealer? Thanks.
Hi, To programme the remote back in, diagnostics are needed, sorry!
Nice one, Cheers
Thanks for watching John, glad it helped :)
@@TheCarKeyMan It certainly did. It’s a straightforward enough procedure but always good to get some instruction before you start taking things apart. 👍🏻
Thanks
You're welcome, thanks for watching :)
Will you need to resync or reprogram the remote after battery replacement? I’m in due for a change and just wanting to be cautious prior to doing this. Looking forward to your reply!
Hi. As a general rule, if a battery is changed before it runs out, we don't normally have to recode it, but if it runs flat, then yes, there's more of a chance it will need programming.
No promises, but normally they can be changed ok. Let us know please?
Very lucky see you RUclips video, because my car key can’t start, because missing one very small Electric version😂
Oh no, hope you can get it sorted ok
Thank you for sharing this video. I can't imagine losing this little chip, I had no idea it was there.. Oh my Allah... world is better place, because of people like you contributing great work voluntarily. Thanks again
Thanks, yes it's common that the chip gets lost. Glad it helped :)
@@TheCarKeyMan broooo i lost the chip!!!! What do I do. Car won't start without it. Can I just get a new chip from a spare key or is it programmed to each vehicle? Thanks for the vid, if I watched it prior I wouldn't be in this mess..
This needs a reply. I’m in same situation
That chip is not connected anywhere right? No wirings and etc? Just literally in there.
Cheers mate! it had stopped working so i bought a battery and all was fine until the little black piece fell out (you know the bit that you said be careful as they are attached to the buttons) Anyway i managed to get the buttons in position and they kept there until i put it all back together. So i would say that it is do able but just got to make sure its in position. So your vid showed me where it should go, so cheers for that i was quoted £28.00 by someone to fit it for meso did it meself for £2.50 Happy days!👍
Well done, these keys are terrible, small fiddly parts that are easily lost or broken. Glad it all worked out ok :)
Thx
You're welcome :)
Hello. I need to purchase a replacement key for a Mitsubishi ASX 2011. Any website recommendations?
Hi Christina. Well the problem is that if you buy your own key, you may have trouble finding someone to cut and programme it. With a Ford key there's not a problem, but with your ASX, it's pretty specialised, so I would recommend finding a local Car Key Man and get a quote...Sorry it's not straight forward, but if you buy the wrong thing you will have wasted your money.
After the battery replacement, do i need to code the key again? I service my car at mitsubishi, the mech told me to bring the spare key because the main key doesn’t work and it must be recoded again. All I remember is the battery 100% must be replaced but recoded? I’m sorry for asking..
Hello Michael, thanks for the question. It's never certain whether a key will need coding after key battery change. We change hundreds every month and very rarely do we need to recode. However, as a general rule, if the key still works when you change key battery, then it will normally stay working.
However, if a key battery has died and the key no longer works, then there's a chance it will need recoding.
Sorry I can't help more.
Do you have to resync with the l200 or is that not necessary?
Hi, have you changed the battery yet? Did it work before you changed the battery?
Hi. Wow. I finally found a clip with Mitsubishi Outlander key FOBs that match my own.
I recently purchased a (Jan) 2012 Outlander LS with 2 x keys but 1 isn't communicating with the car. Thankfully, one is. I tried replacing the battery but still nothing. The transponder chip is definitely in the non-functioning FOB. Is there a simple solution to programming the electronics to the car's system? I found a RUclips clip suggesting holding both buttons for 3 blinks then the unlock for a further 3 but it didn't work. Hope you can help. Thanks.
Hi, if the chip is definitelyin the lid of the case, and the van runs with the other key, then it seems the only possibility is that the key isn't coded to the car. This needs doing with diagnostics I'm afraid
Thanks for the video, easy guide. I have changed the battery and there appears to be power to the key, transponder is in the key but the key will not unlock or lock the car remotely. Battery is in correct, any suggestions please? Thanks
Hi, sorry for the delay, I was a away. Does the red light on the key flash?
@@TheCarKeyMan yes it does
Dropped my key and black plastic broke in half. Chip is still there. I glued it and everything works. Any idea where I can find a plastic replacement? It's a mistibushi rvr 2011.
Hi Edisha, there is a good selection on eBay and Amazon. You just need to check because there are two styles of blade
Worked. Thanks.
Thanks for the feedback, glad it helped you :)
Thankyou easy ounce you put the battery upside down. 😮😊
Hi Jason, thanks for the feedback, hope you got it sorted ;)
@@TheCarKeyMan I did and the spare key aswell cheers mate. 😀
What type of battery was it please? A 2032 or 2025?
It takes like 10 goes of constantly pressing the unlock button over again to unlock it. Does this mean the battery is nearly flat?
Hi, yes I would say so
Does anyone know why most lancers the metal blade key has a T-shape at the based, but all the replacement cases/fobs sold do not have the T shape, but only fit a straight blade?
Hi, ok a simple one really. The original metal key is moulded into the plastic, and the T shape gives it as much surface area to be attached to the plastic. The replacement cases are built is two halves, the plastic case and metal blade , but they are just compatible with themselves. They are not designed to take the original blade.
agradecido
my micro chip inside key are missing inside... can i see where the are microchip?
Hi, I hope you can help.
My battery light was going dim and wouldn't open the car. Watched your video, got new battery etc but the lights won't go on and won't unlock the car. Replaced with the old battery and now the lights don't go on with it in.
I was very careful doing your procedure.
Any ideas?!?!
Thanks
Hello Jamie. Ok, so there a couple of things to ask.
Before the original battery went dim, did the keys buttons unlock the car?
So did your old key work in past?
Thanks for the reply, yes it was but it would take a number of pushes before the door would unlock. This only started a few days ago. So I found your video, bought another battery yesterday and put it in today and nothing.
I checked all the terminals etc everything looks normal.
Thanks
OK, I'm not sure. If you put the old battery back in, then it should do what it did. Does the light come on at all with either battery?
No, nothing. Complete blank. Light was working before, very dull but now nothing.
Time for another whole key I think.
It's a bit odd. There are connectors inside, are they touching the battery in the correct place?
How easy are the keys to reprogram? I’m having to lock with key in the door at the mo?
Hi Matthew, is your key transmitting? Did it used to work? Have you tried a battery?
@@TheCarKeyMan I only got the car yesterday. The dealer said it would need reprogramming. When I press the buttons on the key no lights come on so is it worth changing the battery first?
After I replaced my battery they do not last long. May be aliexpress crap batteries. They just work 1 year. After 8 months I have issues to open the car if key was left in a cold place(+12C). Im thinking to try 1620 battery hopping it will last longer.
Hi, I would get a good quality battery and I'm sure that will fix the problem ;)
Indonesia 😘
Glad it helped, stay safe
I changed the battery key and it’s not working now. The light doesn’t come up, it use to work before I changed the battery. Do I need to sync or anything?
Hi, I would go back a step. Put your old battery back in and see if it works again.
Did you put the battery the right way ? Check it once more, Also try the original battery and see if the lights come
Hello i have a question
I lost the chip inside my key what do i do?
Hello Zaki
you can have just the chip supplied and coded in to replace the lost one, but it neeeds to be done with a computer, you cannot do this yourself unfortunately
I lose the chip and i got no other spare key and my car wont start. What should i do? Pls reply me
Hello, where abouts are you please? In the UK?
I have a nice 2005 outlander, I’ve changed the battery but it still doesn’t work how can I reprogram it please
Hi Don, it needs coding with a computer
@@TheCarKeyMan Thank you, gr8 video by the way👍🏻😎
Will CR3032 work as well?
You're welcome Louis, thanks for watching :)
Hi what site I could find that key
Hi, I expect Amazon or ebay will have the cases
hi, my wife droped the key and tried to start the car afterwards, which didn't start, she tried a few time. when i came home tried the second key even thatone is not working. machanic can't find the fault. he attached the computer but no connection between key and ECU. any idea what to do next before towing it to the dealership?
Hi, can you see the chip inside the key?
@@TheCarKeyMan your video was very helpful.the chip was missing which we luckily found and car started after nearly three weeks. the local mechanic asked me to arrange a tow to Mitsubishi dealer. thanks again you saved me money and lots of hassle.
Yes shocking design always coming apart, i've lost one chip already out of a set of new keys.
I know, this is just bad design and manufacture. Thanks for watching :)
My transponder chip lost...but still can start the engine..... if anything wrong without the chip inside
That's odd ! Is it missing from inside the case?
IF car starts then no problem
How do you take the key out ?
Hi Matthew, the blade is moulded into the plastic, it shouldn't come out unless broken
Mine doesnt have that chip, it has the slot though but can starr it
Hi, so it starts it without the chip?
@@TheCarKeyMan apparently. It split open earlier and I had to tape it together momentarily while waiting for a new case. I did not find any chip in the car but it starts and runs normally. Mine is 2015 glx hatchback. I am not sure if model or location matters. I am in the Philippines. I actually got worried when I saw your video amd I do not have any chip now but works normally
Mine doesn't have a screw on it, other than that, it's exactly the same as this one
That's odd, did you manage to change the battery?
Sorry where can I buy one
Glad it helped Jeffery, appreciate the feedback :)
what if I lose the car key chip
Hi Wassim. This is really common. An Auto Locksmith will be able to supply just a chip and then code it up to start the car with a computer. Otherwise it's a whole new key!
So what is 3rd button 🤔
Hi, not sure, some versions of this key have a panic button, is it a UK vehicle?
I changed the batter then it worked after few mins its not working again
Hi, that's odd, not sure why that would be
I wet mine. What should i do?
take it apart and put it into a tupperware container with dry rice
I have recently lost my little device that starts the car fingers cross 🤞 I find it
Let's hoipe! If not, a mobile locksmith shoud be able to code it just a chip, instead of the whole key. I do thee often!
I just change the battery in my remote now it dose not work
Hi Peter, that's odd. Normally we do not have to recode these
if you have to reprogram the key fob
1. Hold both the lock and unlock buttons until the lights flash three times.
2. Let the buttons go.
3. Push the unlock button until the light flashes two times. Your car is synchronized.
4. Test the connection to make sure everything is working correctly.
Thank you for this information, it really helps the channel :)
Why is there 3 buttons with one of them being hidden
I believe that some models have another feature, a panic mode. This is a popular fit in the states
On my Australian Lancer, the third button unlocks the boot
mine hasnt got a f**kin screw on it, what then ?? its a 2013 mitsubishi lancer key looks the same as that with no screw?
Hi that's odd, not see that before, sorry
Maybe find an Auto Locksmith that can break the old case open and sort out a new case for you
