- "History repeats itself" as the saying goes. Join @FormulaJonah and Myself and dive into learning about the '98 and '23 Le Mans super cars and hyper cars. Have the manufacturers learned from their mistakes? How do LMdH and LMH compare to LMP1 and GT1? Will BMW win in 2024?
Porsche didn't dominate Lemans in 1998. Toyota did but they had the Lemans curses at the time until 2018.
Toyota only dominated for 22.5 hours. Not good enough. Porsche came home with the Gold and the Silver. Pretty dominant in that respect.
"It doesn't matter if it was an inch or a mile, winning is winning." - a family guy.
Indeed , Toyota, Mercedes and BMW were all quicker than Porsche, such was that Porsche only had the 4th fastest car, with the 911 GT1 '98 but they had the reliability so it just fell into their lap.
Something I learned after the video was uploaded was that in 1998, the GT1 porsches completed 351, and 350 laps.
In 2022 GTE Pro 1st and 2nd both finished 350 laps. I know that the track has changed a little, but it's very interesting how the modern lower class GT cars are nearly identical in pace to those of the GT1 era 25 years ago.
@@getfasterE36 That's interesting as the 911 Gt1 was more on the prototype side of things, that todays GTs are right their the relentless march of technology!
Seriously?????
The Group C, GT1 and LMP1 era's remain unmatched. The cars were absolutely amazing!
Lmp900 smashed lmp1 can’t be beaten
6:46 I thought the 911 gt1 in 1996 and the evo version in 1997 had H pattern shifter. The sequential shifter came in 911 gt1-98 later.
BMW did not compete in the GT1 class in 1998, that was GTC competition a privateer that ran the McLaren F1s that year they were 1997 spec longtails, BMW only competed in the LMP1 class with the V12 LM.
Thank you for this video! I really appreciate your work! Greetings from Romania! I salute your collaboration with Jonah!
Thank you. Working with Formula Jonah was great, we were able to combine our knowledge of classic cars and modern cars to create something unique.
I've started production on my next video. Should be ready in about a month or 2. I think it's gonna be a good one. 👍
A few things: don't call it Le ManS. The S is NOT pronounced! Same goes for Chassis. Think of both words like Le Man and Chassi - easy.
The part about BMW's engine power is not correct. I don't care what the source is - even if it is BMW themselves - it is wrong. They can easily go to the full 680 hp (670 bhp) and even beyond. I know I know... "source trust me bro", but I'm serious. You can be sure they can easily do that :) Therefore Ferrari doesn't have an advantage in that regard (as mentioned later).
Also regarding the higher voltage on the Ferrari... weight savings with wires are completely irrelevant, because they all have a minimum weight :D
Other than that, strong video! And man that Ferrari looks so good. I can't wait for Le Mans!
Same, the 2023 Le Mans is going to be lit. 🔥 🔥
I can't wait to watch the NASCAR dominate LMH cars on the straights. And then get passed by GT cars in the corners. 🤣
If you like this you should check out the Panoz video. I had never heard the name "Panoz" spoken aloud until after I had already started recording the voice over. So I pronounced it the same way I had been reading it since 1999. 🙃
@@getfasterE36 hahaha alright I'll check the Panoz vid😂 But btw, as far as I know a NASCAR tops out at ~200 mph (320), but I know the Toyota last year achieved a top speed of 213 mph (342). So I don't think the NASCAR will dominate them on the straights^^
NASCARs are fitted with air restrictors to reduce horsepower for safety reasons. I suspect that they might choose to remove the air restrictors for Le Mans, this would allow them to easily reach 220 mph. It would make sense that they would want to show off a bit since it is a special event. But maybe they will use an air restrictor for reliability or fuel economy purposes.
@@getfasterE36 yeah I could imagine they might want to reduce power, because it needs to last 24h. The car also features a significant amount of additional aero (meaning drag!) so top speed will be impacted by that as well.
So the action they took against a road car competition becoming filled with unlimited cost prototypes from major manufacturers is to now make the races for even more specialist race only vehicles that aren't even pretending to be road prototypes ?
Yep.
After the 911 GT1 Porsche had another Endurance Proto. The RS Spyder with semi-works entry by Penske. Sooo there was not such a big gap between 911 gt1 to 919
But it was LMP2. Freakin fast but the idea was to build it for customers
Americans please think and use metric.
Very interesting!!! Thanks for the video 🏁🏁🏁
So LMH was brought by late stage capitalism. Cool, cool.
❤❤❤❤ le mans 😮🇦🇷
Am I wrong that era viper was in gts(gt2) category?
The viper ran GT1 in 1996. I think.
Porsche was also in 1999 and Audi was from 1999for a long time don’t forget the whole Audis R8,!=,R!=+,R15,R18 ( Ultra and Quattro in 2012 with a flywheel one of the hybrids but not so cool like Toyotas TS030 and 2014 Porsche came back withe their 919 hY and all started with 2 MJ( mega joule flywheel ,battery and supercompasatorand ges up to 8 Mj over the years they rum 10 laps 13,626x10=136,26 km or 8,47x84,7 with 36 liters almost 10 gallons of fuel. i dont like this genration now.
2012 and 2015 LM24 were great races.
The Nakajima crash from 2012 in the TS030 is in the new gran turismo movie trailer, you see it?
@@getfasterE36 No you mean that one with the Ferrari 458 ? this was Anthony Davidson !
Oops. Same car though right?
@@getfasterE36 he was in the sister car and crashed the Deltawing out.
am I the only one who get frustated that in the thumbnail the "lmp1" car is a 1998 bmw?
*1999 bmw
The car in the thumbnail is a 1998 BMW V12 LM. But the graphics are indeed from the 1999 running of Le Mans. It was very difficult to find sources of the V12 LM, as it was quickly overshadowed by the V12 LMR.
@@getfasterE36 I just wanted to say that the V12LMR is not an LMP1
The V12 LM was an LMP1 though.
@@getfasterE36 more an LMP at all than an LMP1
Nice
You really should add the caveat that Toyota's dominance of lemans comes only from them being the only major manufacturer and works outfit from 2018 until 2023 being the first year of serious competition. Not to mention the hypercar class is a BoP class now with politics playing a role in the performance given to cars and given how Toyota has 1sec a lap on the field in race trim currently you can see whose being favoured by the poilitics.
Hypercars is just a fancy name, the cars are just LMP2 with a few changes. They should have abligated the makers to make road going versions or base them on road going cars but they didnt want to
I really wanted to see the project one AMG and the Aston Valkorie. I am a bit disappointed hypercar doesn't require homologation models.
The issue with that would have been that many manufacturers don't want to or can't build these road going Hypercars. You would have probably lost 75% of teams we have now.
Bruh
GT4 the best one.
Did you like my Race Start and Race End sound effects? I thought it was the perfect way to start and finish the episode.

Please check the right pronunciation on LeMans - [ lə mɔ́n ]
I've heard it pronounced both ways before. But I will use the correct pronunciation going forward. It's a French name, not an English name, so it's pronounced a little differently.
@@getfasterE36 good video btw
@blue head Thank you. Hopefully you enjoy the next one as well. Should be done in a few weeks.

0:59 didnt somone die in that car and it got banned
I'm not sure if it was banned. But someone did die in a similar car in the 1997, Le Mans during qualifying.
An unfortunate fact that I learned while doing research for the "Nascar Hybrid at Le Mans" video.
