You don’t understand how the pension system works. You think of it as being like a meal that you have paid for for yourself and that someone is now trying to take away from you. In actual fact, to use a restaurant analogy, the way it works is that every group of diners at a table has to pay for the meal that the previous diners at the same table ate, so your meal is actually being paid for by the people who are eating after you. That might all be fine if each group of diners is the same size and everyone eats the same meal. But what has actually happened is that the first group of diners were a table of 4 and had one course, your group (which consists of 8 diners) then paid their relatively small bill and split it 8 ways, your group of 8 then had a 3 course meal followed by port, your be try large bill is too be paid by the next group of diners which is only another 4 and have been told the kitchen is closing and can only serving salads. The whole idea of National Insurance contributions was to pay for a state pension. The fact that NI now contributes to the overall tax take from the government isn't the fault of individuals who've paid NI contributions for forty years of their working life.I don't have children but some of my taxes have been used to pay for state education.Am i resentful of that fact? No.Children need to be educated and i'm aware tax resources need to be spent in that area of public spending. There are universal benefits and means-tested benefits. Some people might regard a pension as a benefit....i don't.There is a social contract between government and tax payers that pensions should be honoured and guaranteed because that is what governments have promised in the past.Means-testing for something that you've already paid for is not going to go down well with those who are not far off retirement age. Many public sector workers retire at 55 or 60 with their public sector pensions, well ahead of many people in the private sector.Should that anomoly be looked at? Their are many unfairnesses and perceived disadvantages when pensions are discussed in the round, but it will be a disgraceful day for our parliamentary democracy if politicians go down the road of means testing the state pension.

Your NIC contributions paid for the pensions of people who were already retired. At the time the demographics meant that there were far more working people paying pensions of relatively few retired people and for a short period due to life expectancy changes. We now have a situation were our demographic is aging so we have fewer workers paying the pensions of lots of people who may be retired for 20/25 years. That is a massive transfer for wealth. If the National Insurance payments had been pooled for a year or two,or,alternatively, the pension had been started at a low level, and gradually increased as the pot filled,so to speak, then we would not be facing the issues that we have today. I don’t really want to raise the ugly head of politics, but Attlee was a Socialist, and that party seems to have a history of spending money that they/we can’t afford!

Would that seem like a fair arrangement to you?

I then had to juggle children and work to help care for my in laws and then my parents. We have paid in far more then the meagre pension will pay on top of the fact that i was due to retire at 60 but now it is 67 by which time my hubbie will ge 78 so not much retirement for us. Yes they have raised the pension age but that doesn't mean you can't retire on your private pension and get your state pension later. This BOY needs to work for 50 years and then moan about being comfortable in old age. Perhaps he might be better employed looking at all the scroungers and foreigners that haven't put a penny into the system that are receiving handouts and benefits, That's where most of the tax payers money is going, not to pensioners that have paid into the system for years.
