    Welcome to the channel: Recovery Skills! In this episode we found a very old mortise machine, very big and heavy. and no longer works. The height and width of the chisel are adjustable. We worked hard for many days. I did my best to show all the work and I am sure that my method will be improved in future videos. I think all the hard work in this project will bring this mortise machine back to life. Our mission is to entertain and give you the opportunity to discover forgotten tools. Please subscribe to my channel so you don't miss anything. Thanks for watching and supporting me. I really appreciate this! Thank you very much!!!

    9:28 Big mistake. The outer ring of the bearing is never struck while it is being inserted into the shaft.
    You should hit the inner ring with a pipe.

    Meticulously cleaned and painted the motor BUT put rusty screws back in! NEVER hammer bearings in the way you did, they may well be damaged now, use a tube or pipe a little larger than the shaft and then hammer down on the tube also as someone stated here never paint the sliding surfaces. Looks good though and is functional.

      The rule of thumb is one never transfer assembly forces onto the balls and journals of the bearings, whatever situation one gets into always keep in mind the balls should never transfer the forces required to fit the bearing be it fitted in a hole or on a shaft, chose tooling accordingly. high precision bearings from that hammering would have been already damaged. for these deep grove ball bearings one might get away wit this hammering without a damaged bearing journal but still it is bad practice. it causes a little pit in the journal and the bearing destroys itself eventually

      Just completely rebuilt an older Rigid 13" planer...
      I replaced the bearings on the cutter bar shaft.
      To ease their installation I put the cutter bar in the freezer for a couple of hours, result was about 25 degrees F, which shrank it maybe a thousands ... Then as crazy as this sounds...I soaked a rag in water, wrapped the new bearings in the soaked rag, and put that into the microwave...for about 2 minutes. (Yes...Metal in the microwave)... It heated the bearing case (with steam) to about 180-200 degrees...no sparks... giving me an expansion of another thousandth. The bearings literally slipped right on, no hammering...

    • @_MadFox
      @_MadFox 2 года назад

      @@dongalloway6888 Well, how did the side rubber seals feel after the microwave? Or were they open bearings? In general, the practice of mounting bearings involves heating in hot engine oil.

    • @dongalloway6888
      @dongalloway6888 2 года назад +1

      @@_MadFox no change in the seals at all...My particular bearings were sealed but had a Plastic type seal as opposed to rubber...
      This was my first attempt at doing this, and I'll admit I was Leary but once I saw how simple it was...it wasn't an issue...and if you're wondering...I have used the planer, and it works fantastic...
      From the manufacturer the bearings and components are rated for a substantial amount of heat...With the microwave and the parts wrapped in a wet rag...the heat, and expansion is created from steam...

    Делаю вывод: ТЫ имеешь возможность заявить о себе, ТОЛЬКО БЛАГОДАРЯ ЗАСРАНЦАМ, СПОСОБНЫМ ДОВЕСТИ СТАНОК ДО ТАКОГО СОСТОЯНИЯ!!! Вот их все ругают, а ты должен благодарить )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))и ещё, ну это так на всякий случай: Во всём мире, все нормальные, (граждане, которым справка не нужна) знают - что, направляющие, винты, зубчатые колеса а также зубчатые планки сопрягающиеся с зубчатыми колесами, НЕ КРАСЯТ, И НЕ СМАЗЫВАЮТ ТАК ОБИЛЬНО ГУСТЫМИ СМАЗКАМИ ТИПА САЛИДОЛА, ЦИАТИМА и Д.Р. Смазки М 20 (машинное масло) вполне достаточно! Через месяц интенсивной работы, все места сопряжения набьются стружкой из под обрабатываемых деталей и тебе придется все это разобрать и вымыть. Направляющие, типа ласточкин хвост, нужно отмыть от краски и грунтовки и легонько ПРОШАБРИТЬ дабы после сборки на ней оставалось небольшое количество смазки что бы не ржавело и легко ходило Но ты мог этого и не знать, но теперь знаешь! .......................................................

    Man, sliding and mating surfaces are rarely ever painted on functional machines. its like painting the internals and the cylinder surfaces of a bearing before assembling it, or the screw for tablefeed, it would make no sense.

    I'm a fitter and Machinist by trade and if I saw someone driving a NEW bearing on with a hammer, on the edge of the race I would belt the person on the head with that HAMMER. You use a pipe the correct size of the INNER race to CAREFULLY seat the bearings, or use a press. By the way I used to use a morticer like that in a cabinet making shop 46 years ago.

    Plus to you for appreciating helpful comments.
    It is not good practice to seat new ball-bearings onto the shaft by hammering on the outer race. This hammers the race against the balls which then hammer against the inner race. Microscopic damage (sometimes even chips) is done to the balls and races and they will fail sooner
    Always use a tube or sleeve which pushes only on the inner race, to move it along the shaft. Pressing is best, but hammer if that's all you've got.

    Absolutely fantastic job...Love the colors and the detail, I'm 64 years old and I've been doing this myself for years, just not smart enough to video tape it and post it on RUclips...
    I firmly believe that the "Older tools" were made stronger and better, and most just need some TLC to get them back in top shape again...
    A couple thoughts if I may...
    Less grease...LoL...most surfaces just need a light film of grease...
    also the "Milled" surfaces that slide on each other...usually aren't painted. They have been milled within thousands of an inch and as long as the surface is clean and again have a light film of grease, they'll slide perfect.
    When they are painted, even the paint can add a few thousands of an inch to the surface causing restrictions.
    Keep up the great work..

    Fantastic restoration of a very well-built and useful tool. However, as mentioned by another viewer, the ways on sliding machine parts should never be painted. In addition to the clearance issues, over time the grease will dissolve the paint combine to make a sticky mess. It doesn't take long to mask the affected parts.

      A professional restorer NEVER uses an orbital, not any other type of sander, on machined surfaces. This was a hack job.

      @@rockersrac ;The issue I have is that Mortiser was once a fine machine tool in its' day. It deserved greater attention and a skilled craftsman. You are correct, it was a fail posted as a "restoration". Have a nice day.

      @@rockersrac For a hundred years, people have been using insulating tape without problems, but now terminals and heat shrinkage have appeared, and everything old is anathema. How tired of these "professional" tips...

    Такой станок и не грех во фрезер переделать. Столько мяса на деталях. Шпиндэль фрезерный только приделать.
