Great video. We experienced a few hours of pouring rain visit in ???whatever area the shuttle bus dropped us at in Busan. We really saw not much, except a Starbucks. Now we know what we missed. Time to add to must see list.

( They sell coffees but don't sell any foods ^^;) Day and night..the scenery of fhe Busan from there is truly beautiful.... especially you can go there quickly by taxi near namchun (남천) subway station ^^ Oh~The Busan tower too~ at yongdu san park. (용두산공원.) Don't miss it I hope ^^; and In Seoul...if you have enough time, I recommend you to go the naksan park.. The name is 부산 where ㅂ sounds like a combination of our B and P sounds. 😊 The spelling is just for foreigners who use the Latin alphabet. Looking forward to more Korean videos!

From what we read, Busan uses RR (Revised Romanization), "which uses only the English alphabet without diacritics, so as to use the QWERTY keyboard, which is the standard for English computers in Korea and throughout the world." I'm in Busan for work right now and trying to pick more food options beyond the B1 food court at Shinsegae (which is mind blowing, BTW, if you haven't been). Where were you finding good review sites?
Hi Mike, we were relying on Google Maps for food reviews and mixing in Apple Maps to fill in the gaps. The Naver app had more information and reviews, but so much of it was not in English it was hard to use. I'd recommend a combination of the three leaning heavily on the latter, especially if you can use Naver better than we did. - Kevin
Thank you for the informative video, very useful as always. Busan is lovely and much more relaxing than Seoul. Don't forget to check out a little bit of the K-Pop culture 🎤while in Korea (ie. BTS who were invited to the White House and UN), and never think you are too old to do that! It's an industry that boosts the Korean GDP, right behind Samsung and Hyundai alike!
We know "of" K-Pop, but really don't follow it. But we are really seeing how important it is to the culture here (and K-dramas)! We are confused by Seoul. We aren't finding it nearly as hectic as we expected it to be. Definitely not as laid back as Busan, but we thought it would be an equivalent to Tokyo, which we aren't seeing as the case. Maybe the activities we are doing are keeping us in more peaceful surroundings. But we are enjoying it here, even though it's a VERY short trip! Thanks so much for your comment! -Judy

That's simply not true. Eating alone is not frowned upon. But if you can eat with others then that is of course good. But don't spread false information. I live in Korea so I know the customs

I actually prefer to eat it with loads of that red paste (made with garlic, soy sauce, sesame seed oil and gochugaru) dissolved into the soup and loads of chopped scallions. Sometimes I also put radish kimchi in the soup. Yum!
@kyungshim6483 I don't think we were expecting to need to "doctor" it up so much. Kevin is Irish and there's a lot of boiled foods in Irish culture (or maybe that's a reflection on his mother's cooking) and the foods stand for themselves. We added some red paste, but I think we were intimidated by adding too much and adding too much heat. When we asked our waitress if we should add any of the other Bachan to it, she said no. We really weren't sure what was in the "peanut paste," so I added some, but maybe we should have been more carefree and just loaded up the soup! 🤷♀️ Thanks for these insights. @@FindingGinaMarieah you are talking about 쌈장. Ssamjang is a soybean paste used for eating 삼겹살 and 돼지국밥. The ingredients in ssamjang is usually these below. Ssamjang is a condiment unique to Korean cuisine that’s used in Korean Ssam or lettuce wrap. Korean ssam usually contains rice, a kind of protein (bulgogi, grilled pork belly, kkongchi jorim and more) wrapped in lettuce or any vegetable leaf that is big enough to make a wrap. So it actually is not a ‘dipping sauce’ in this case but I used the words because that’s what most people seem to call it. Ssam 쌈 means to wrap and Jang 장 means sauce. So literally it means ‘wrap sauce’.. but it’s the most amazingly complex and umami packed spicy and salty sauce that’s a perfect compliment to grilled meats or just plain fresh vegetables. 5 WAYS TO EAT SSAMJANG With Korean BBQ + Lettuce Wrap (Ssam) - Here’s a picture of how you would make ssam - you can see a small dollop of ssamjang on top of grilled pork belly. And here I am using a Perilla Leaf (Kkaennip) to wrap it. Check out my 6 Korean BBQ Marinades recipes to see how to make with beef, chicken and pork. I also have a separate post for enjoying it with Pork Belly. I also have a post where I share info on all the different ssam greens used. With Kkongchi (pike mackerel) Jorim - One of my very first posts, make jorim with canned kkongchi and enjoy with ssam and ssamjang. Korean ssambap lettuce wrap perilla, kale, cabbage, squash leaves Make Ssambap - make pretty and yummy little ssambap, excellent for parties or for lunchboxes! With Fresh Vegetable sticks and Chili Peppers - One of Korean’s (and my) favorite way to eat ssamjang is to dip green chili peppers like Korean Putgochu, Jalapeno Peppers or Annaheim peppers (not spicy at all). When I think about eating it this way, I’m always taken back to warm Korean summer days at my dad’s farm, sitting with the farmers and ajummas and eating a yummy but humble meal with them A typical lunch at the farm is a bowl of Boribap (보리밥 Barley Rice), some banchan like Myeolchi Bokkeum, Namuls with a pile of Korean green chili peppers on a plate and ssamjang. The chili peppers are served whole not cut, and you pick one up with your hands and dip them into the ssamjang, take a bite and then dip again for your next bite. The above image shows it in action. YUM! But haha.. I know.. we were basically double dipping!! But Koreans always shared plates together in the old days - not so much these days. Oh oh!! And we can’t forget Makgeolli!! Makgeolli was said to give farmers extra energy boost and also relaxes their sore muscles. So they claim..haha. If you ever want to try making Makgeolli at home, here’s my recipe. You can also dip various vegetable sticks in them - like carrots, cucumbers and bell peppers. I love having just a side of fresh veggies and ssam as banchan for my meals, whether I have grilled meats or not. Korean Vegetable Platter with Ssam Jang Try using ssamjang to make Bibimbap instead of just gochujang. It adds a whole dimension of flavor that you may enjoy. Down below is the ingredients so you know what is inside Ingredients Full Version Doenjang (Korean soybean paste) Gochujang (Korean chili pepper paste) extra firm tofu crumbles Mayonnaise chopped garlic chopped green onions chopped green chili peppers (Korean putgochu or Jalapeno) dried onion powder or finely chopped fresh onion sesame seeds sesame oil maple syrup or mulyeot (korean corn syrup) green plum syrup or sugar But every recipe is different. When I have eaten the soup I always put a tiiny amount of season shrimps inside the soup and a little bit of the red paste because the red paste is spicy and if you don't like spicy food then be careful with the red paste because it can become too spicy and then I take a little of the orange/brown paste and stir. 😊😊

We aren't familiar with the ads, and it's a shame that Busan lost the bid (apparently by a huge margin). But it sounds like investments in the city will proceed regardless of the World Expo bid’s outcome, which is good to see. We enjoyed Busan and think it's an underrated city. -Judy

Busan is very coastal. Slow paced. Relaxed. Fresh city it is more comfortable than Seoul. Because Seoul is a very hectic. Humid, crowded city not so many slow paced calm beaches there
@elaineq9565 We loved Busan, but we were surprised that our experience in Seoul was relaxed and comfortable. It didn't have the hustle that we expected it to (similar to the energy of New York City is what we thought it would be). We enjoyed the pockets of calm and beauty that are sometimes missing from major cities. But the beaches in Busan are spectacular. Those definitely were missing! -Judy

( They sell coffees but don't sell any foods ^^;) Day and night..the scenery of fhe Busan from there is truly beautiful.... especially you can go there quickly by taxi near namchun (남천) subway station ^^ Oh~The Busan tower too~ at yongdu san park. (용두산공원.)

Busan sounds like Pusan because the Korean language doesn't differentiate. The name is 부산 where ㅂ sounds like a combination of our B and P sounds. 😊 The spelling is just for foreigners who use the Latin alphabet.

I'm in Busan for work right now and trying to pick more food options beyond the B1 food court at Shinsegae (which is mind blowing, BTW, if you haven't been).
Where were you finding good review sites?
Hi Mike, we were relying on Google Maps for food reviews and mixing in Apple Maps to fill in the gaps. The Naver app had more information and reviews, but so much of it was not in English it was hard to use. I'd recommend a combination of the three leaning heavily on the latter, especially if you can use Naver better than we did. - Kevin
Thank you for the informative video, very useful as always. Busan is lovely and much more relaxing than Seoul. Don't forget to check out a little bit of the K-Pop culture 🎤while in Korea (ie. BTS who were invited to the White House and UN), and never think you are too old to do that! It's an industry that boosts the Korean GDP, right behind Samsung and Hyundai alike!
We know "of" K-Pop, but really don't follow it. But we are really seeing how important it is to the culture here (and K-dramas)! We are confused by Seoul. We aren't finding it nearly as hectic as we expected it to be. Definitely not as laid back as Busan, but we thought it would be an equivalent to Tokyo, which we aren't seeing as the case. Maybe the activities we are doing are keeping us in more peaceful surroundings. But we are enjoying it here, even though it's a VERY short trip! Thanks so much for your comment! -Judy

That's simply not true. Eating alone is not frowned upon. But if you can eat with others then that is of course good. But don't spread false information. I live in Korea so I know the customs

How cool, Andrea and Alpay! What a small world this is! We thought visiting Busan versus focusing our time in Seoul would be a lesser experience, but it wasn't at all. We did visit Seoul as well, but it was only a 48-hour trip. Safe travels with your family. We love that you are doing this and wish we had chosen to prioritize travel when our kids were growing up.

We did not know this, but we learned it after we had spent some time in Japan at the start of our time in Asia/Southeast Asia! It makes soup so much easier to eat if you're able to slurp! -Judy

There's one other special thing about Busan: you can take a ferry boat and travel to Japan in only three hours. A one-way ticket costs only 50 USD
We had been in Japan for 40+ days beginning in October, but it wouldn't have been a bad detour to spend time there. I had no idea it was so inexpensive of a commute! We wouldn't mind visiting both countries again, so this is good information. Thanks for sharing it. -Judy

Pork soup is delicious when you add small shrimp. The shrimp is a food preserved in salt. Plain pork soup is bland

I actually prefer to eat it with loads of that red paste (made with garlic, soy sauce, sesame seed oil and gochugaru) dissolved into the soup and loads of chopped scallions. Sometimes I also put radish kimchi in the soup. Yum!
@kyungshim6483 I don't think we were expecting to need to "doctor" it up so much. Kevin is Irish and there's a lot of boiled foods in Irish culture (or maybe that's a reflection on his mother's cooking) and the foods stand for themselves. We added some red paste, but I think we were intimidated by adding too much and adding too much heat. When we asked our waitress if we should add any of the other Bachan to it, she said no. We really weren't sure what was in the "peanut paste," so I added some, but maybe we should have been more carefree and just loaded up the soup! 🤷♀️ Thanks for these insights. @@FindingGinaMariethat is why you have to add very little and taste first because the flavor gets enhanced after a while. If you add too much tiny seasoning shrimps then it will be too salty
@@FindingGinaMarieah you are talking about 쌈장. Ssamjang is a soybean paste used for eating 삼겹살 and 돼지국밥. The ingredients in ssamjang is usually these below.
Ssamjang is a condiment unique to Korean cuisine that’s used in Korean Ssam or lettuce wrap. Korean ssam usually contains rice, a kind of protein (bulgogi, grilled pork belly, kkongchi jorim and more) wrapped in lettuce or any vegetable leaf that is big enough to make a wrap. So it actually is not a ‘dipping sauce’ in this case but I used the words because that’s what most people seem to call it.
Ssam 쌈 means to wrap and Jang 장 means sauce. So literally it means ‘wrap sauce’.. but it’s the most amazingly complex and umami packed spicy and salty sauce that’s a perfect compliment to grilled meats or just plain fresh vegetables.
5 WAYS TO EAT SSAMJANG
With Korean BBQ + Lettuce Wrap (Ssam) - Here’s a picture of how you would make ssam - you can see a small dollop of ssamjang on top of grilled pork belly. And here I am using a Perilla Leaf (Kkaennip) to wrap it. Check out my 6 Korean BBQ Marinades recipes to see how to make with beef, chicken and pork. I also have a separate post for enjoying it with Pork Belly. I also have a post where I share info on all the different ssam greens used.
With Kkongchi (pike mackerel) Jorim - One of my very first posts, make jorim with canned kkongchi and enjoy with ssam and ssamjang.
Korean ssambap lettuce wrap perilla, kale, cabbage, squash leaves
Make Ssambap - make pretty and yummy little ssambap, excellent for parties or for lunchboxes!
With Fresh Vegetable sticks and Chili Peppers - One of Korean’s (and my) favorite way to eat ssamjang is to dip green chili peppers like Korean Putgochu, Jalapeno Peppers or Annaheim peppers (not spicy at all). When I think about eating it this way, I’m always taken back to warm Korean summer days at my dad’s farm, sitting with the farmers and ajummas and eating a yummy but humble meal with them
A typical lunch at the farm is a bowl of Boribap (보리밥 Barley Rice), some banchan like Myeolchi Bokkeum, Namuls with a pile of Korean green chili peppers on a plate and ssamjang. The chili peppers are served whole not cut, and you pick one up with your hands and dip them into the ssamjang, take a bite and then dip again for your next bite. The above image shows it in action. YUM!
But haha.. I know.. we were basically double dipping!! But Koreans always shared plates together in the old days - not so much these days.
Oh oh!! And we can’t forget Makgeolli!! Makgeolli was said to give farmers extra energy boost and also relaxes their sore muscles. So they claim..haha. If you ever want to try making Makgeolli at home, here’s my recipe.
You can also dip various vegetable sticks in them - like carrots, cucumbers and bell peppers. I love having just a side of fresh veggies and ssam as banchan for my meals, whether I have grilled meats or not.
Korean Vegetable Platter with Ssam Jang
Try using ssamjang to make Bibimbap instead of just gochujang. It adds a whole dimension of flavor that you may enjoy. Down below is the ingredients so you know what is inside
Ingredients
Full Version
Doenjang (Korean soybean paste)
Gochujang (Korean chili pepper paste)
extra firm tofu crumbles
Mayonnaise
chopped garlic
chopped green onions
chopped green chili peppers (Korean putgochu or Jalapeno)
dried onion powder or finely chopped fresh onion
sesame seeds
sesame oil
maple syrup or mulyeot (korean corn syrup)
green plum syrup or sugar
But every recipe is different. When I have eaten the soup I always put a tiiny amount of season shrimps inside the soup and a little bit of the red paste because the red paste is spicy and if you don't like spicy food then be careful with the red paste because it can become too spicy and then I take a little of the orange/brown paste and stir. 😊😊

We aren't familiar with the ads, and it's a shame that Busan lost the bid (apparently by a huge margin). But it sounds like investments in the city will proceed regardless of the World Expo bid’s outcome, which is good to see. We enjoyed Busan and think it's an underrated city. -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie it's beyond shame. High profile travelled to countries gifting Kimchi. heavily advertised in Korea we will host the expo. Italy only came along because 3 competitors received 19 votes. My parents bought me by telling "Do not celebrate too early. Busan is definitely a nice place because of the SK one weather system.

I cant imagine spending more than 1 night in Busan. Dont have too high of expectations for any Korean city that is not Seoul. Very few differences.
Hi Stephen, After six months in Asia/SE Asia, we found Busan's laid-back atmosphere, beautiful beaches, mountains, and coastal walks refreshing. While we enjoyed a few days in Seoul, we equally enjoyed Busan, which also is a more affordable city with many worthwhile qualities. -Judy

Busan is very coastal. Slow paced. Relaxed. Fresh city it is more comfortable than Seoul. Because Seoul is a very hectic. Humid, crowded city not so many slow paced calm beaches there
@elaineq9565 We loved Busan, but we were surprised that our experience in Seoul was relaxed and comfortable. It didn't have the hustle that we expected it to (similar to the energy of New York City is what we thought it would be). We enjoyed the pockets of calm and beauty that are sometimes missing from major cities. But the beaches in Busan are spectacular. Those definitely were missing! -Judy
